Glumbert.com Not So Glum
Linda Stone, an ex-Microsoftie who has a curious bent and a fertile mind, pointed me toward this most excellent video called “Shift Happens” about the tech and media boom. Try hard to ignore the swelling “Braveheart”-type music and enjoy the impact of simple but effective text on a plain background (it looks like some really bad PowerPoint template), juxtaposing important information about our new information order.
It is astonishing to realize that the U.S. is 20th in the world in broadband penetration, lagging behind Luxembourg, and that if MySpace’s population were a country, it would be the 11th largest. One factoid that gave me real techie tingles was that the information in one week’s worth of New York Times is more than most people in the 18th century would come across in a lifetime (but that’s only during Fashion Week).
Glumbert is one of the many video services popping up that are not YouTube. And it is nice to see them, although one wonders what will become of all this video as these sites consolidate over time, when it becomes clear that advertising is not going to lift all these ships of spools.
Until then, enjoy “Shift Happens” and your more basic goofy-but-cool type of video seen here called: “Catching Sunglasses With Your Face.” Yes, that is it and it is a pretty neat trick, as you will see.

FYI – the music is from Last of the Mohicans, not Braveheart. And it is a PowerPoint template, although I don’t think it’s so bad.
