I can't contribue to an organization that puts people like Bill O'Reilly on prime time and plays to the people's basest instincts with Fox "News". I'll just use the free website. It will go in direct competition with the Google's or Yahoo!'s strategy. Free access for the public. The Internet world is moving fast and it is moves like this that create the winners. I initially balked at the price of WSJ online years ago, but have actually come to like it - after all, I am after the content, it is much cheaper than the print edition and more useful to me. Free doesnt seem like the right idea, but how about a reduced price for the subscription? Knock it down to $49.99/yr, or even $29.99/year Weekly World News just moved to online-only. I always felt they made a strategic mistake in launching the site with a subscription for many of the reasons Kara states about influence, size of audience, etc. At this point, however, its not at all clear that making the site free would automatically get it to the top of the Financial sites ratings without a big distribution partner (oh wait, there's MySpace). And NewsCorp will have to weigh the potential damage to newspaper subscriptions and DJ wire service business if wsj.com goes free as is. Will be v interesting for sure, but its not a simple decision. I’m not so sure “go free” is the right move for wsj.com at this point.
