Yahoo! does have a lot going for it. But one thing it doesn't have is mindshare. What do we say when someone asks us where store X is, or what is pancreatitis? We tell them to Google it.

Unlike Xerox, Google doesn't seem to lack a will to innovate, which means Yahoo! is going to have its work cut out for it to find holes in Google's armor.

Another thing Yahoo! doesn't have, and this is the one thing that will definitely negatively affect its ability to combat Google, is mobil leadership (how's that for new-speak?). As Kara points out, and friends of mine have complained about, doing things at Yahoo! is like doing things at the U.N., so little gets done.

Yang nees to pull a Steve Jobs to get the company's attention.

As with all companies facing cost controls, Yahoo off-shored a percentage of its development efforts to Bangalore.

Doing so, will inevitably affect the ability to launch products on time. Cultural and communication issues to a team half-way around the world hampers companies operating in the fast past Internet world.

Pulling these efforts closer to home would reduce these launch issues.

Yahoo! has:
* Huge consumer audience - check
* Large advertising base/reach - check
* Number of branded websites - check
* Recognizable Brand Name - check

In short, Yahoo! has all the assets stacked in their favor to succeed. In the end it really boils down to:
Execution, execution, execution!

That's about it. The only "sacred cow" that needs to be sacrificed is Yahoo!'s is the slow moving stagnant execution killing company culture.

Yahoo! reminds me of the classic movie Rocky 3 where Rocky Balboa has become complacent surrounded by yes men. Mickey dies and can no longer protect Rocky. Clubber Lang (Google) beats the living crap out of Rocky. Rocky, through the help of Apollo, regains his confidence and the "Eye of the Tiger" to learn to fight on his own two feet.

Reinventing (or rediscovering) the company's killer instinct (Ey e of the Tiger) begins and ends with the people @ Yahoo! End of story.

How about "The enemy outnumber us a paltry 3 to 1, good odds for any Yahoo! This day we rescue a world from contextual advertising and tyranny and usher in a world brighter than anything we can imagine, Give thanks men, to Jerry Yang and the brave 300! TO VICTORY!"
