I can think of no reason for him to say such a thing other than he just doesn't know, and doesn't care to get the history right. There is definitely a lot of re-invention for the history books going on here. I don't think it will stick though. You can't live down your misdeeds when they have been so blatant and so numerous (and haven't even ceased apparently).
