[...] The web is afire with the news that after its latest bid attempt to takeover Yahoo failed, Microsoft decided to back down. My desktop news widget is going wild with this news… updating every 30s or so with more updates from Wall Street Journal, CNN Money, Forbes, Information Week, CNet News, etc; hot news indeed. All those big time journals aside it appears that BoomTown’s Kara Swisher was the first to break the news. [...]

[...] After today’s events, I guess you could say Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) tried, holding a series of meetings about a possible takeover that ended up proving exactly how incompatible the companies were. [...]

No harm done to Microsoft. They've screwed over another competitor. Microsoft corporate philosophy has always been zero-sum based, with hurting another company always at least as valuable as helping themselves.

I'm sure that as we type MS is working on other ways to poison the Internet well for everyone, since they can't control it completely.

Yahoo will survive in some form, if only as a subsidiary to some other company, but even so, this will be better for their customers than their fate would at Microsoft. MS has no friends, and rightly so.

Only a fool will make such a move at this point of market moment.

Second, why not MSFT quietly buys some YHOO shares when it drops to mid or low 20's.

great move steve - integration risks outweigh any potential scale issue. Yahoo will never see the 30's again
