BoomTown Takes the Day Off

Look, we’ve been delivering the goods for weeks now in terms of news, so BoomTown is taking the day off at the beach today (here’s my exact location right now) to get ready for our upcoming sixth D: All Things Digital conference.
That starts Tuesday night when Walt Mossberg and I interview Microsoft’s (MSFT) Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer live onstage.
After that on Wednesday? Yahoo’s (YHOO) Jerry Yang and Sue Decker, Time Warner’s (TWX) Jeff Bewkes, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg. Oh, yes, Rupert Murdoch of News Corp. (NWS) (owner of Dow Jones and this site). And more!
You get the picture about why I need to rest up!
So, I’ll try to be back tomorrow with some good scoopage I do have on major news stories we have been following and analysis of some key moves by industry players.
Like Microsoft’s goofy cash-for-search scheme. My first and probably last reaction: It did not work in Web 1.0 when others tried it and it will not work now, even if it made Google’s stock drop yesterday. You cannot fight consumers’ obvious preferences, in this case Google (GOOG), with money–it’s like paying for people to be friends with you–yuk.
Or Twitter’s $15 million funding. As I have said and will say again: Normal people–i.e. non-Silicon Valley white geeks who need it as an emotional outlet–still have never, ever heard of it.
