His model is not as complicated as it looks and everyone is looking too deep into it. Content is big money now and he is gathering it and tools to implement it into a social stratosphere. It will be the ultimate mashup unlike anyone has seen if he call pull it off. Richard is a brilliant guy and he is moving quickly in areas such as content acquisition while not forcing the issue on the convergence of print and television coming onto the net. There will be a tipping point in the evolution of social networking that will eventually have a huge thirst for real content intermixed with creative works, imo.

Kara,

Is there a reason why you didn't ask Richard exactly what combining social media with content actually means? I looked at a couple of their sites and all I could find were "share this" links with social bookmarking sites.

How is what Demand is doing different to about.com?

I'd love to interview Richard sometime and get into this in detail; right now I really don't understand their model.

Kara:

You should spend more time with Richard. Everywhere he goes, he does well. Demand is exceptionally impressive in that he unselfishly raised huge capital. spent aggressively to buy companies and has created a very real business. Compare this to Slide or RockYou or even a MetaCafe or Automatic or Fedreated and there will be way more long-term value at Demand.
