what Ballmer said:
“I am tremendously excited to welcome Qi to Microsoft,” Ballmer said. “Dr. Lu’s deep technical expertise, leadership capabilities and hard-working mentality are well-known in the technology industry, and Microsoft will benefit from his addition to our executive management team.”
What he meant:
Hey, if we can't get Jerry Yang we'll get Qi Lu. It saves us about $20 billion.
My bottom line: Lu won't make one bit of difference, Microsoft has had 15 years to win online and it has lost. And Lu was responsible for Yahoo LOSING search share to Google. If he was any good he would have come up with a BETTER technology than Google and leveraged Yahoo's traffic to make it the de facto search king. He didn't because he doesn't have the goods.

What Lu said: “I am genuinely excited about the opportunities ahead for Microsoft to make an enormous impact on the online industry,” Dr. Lu said. “Microsoft has built a great foundation for its search and advertising technologies and put an amazing team of researchers and engineers in place to drive the next wave of innovation in online services. I’m looking forward to working with them to help transform the way people and businesses use the Internet to find and share information.”
What he meant:
Microsoft hasn't really done anything right in its online area. It's even worse than Yahoo. But I can probably ride this one for 3 or 4 years on a big salary before anybody notices I was the guy at Yahoo who precided over a DECLINE in search market share for Yahoo.
