It was delightful to see Bill and Steve sharing a stage and reminiscing about their stuff, but I was surprised that Bill (gadgets) and Steve (widgets) didn’t settle the debate about the original inventor of the widget.

One can never have too many widgets. Somebody codes something you never even dreamed of wanting - suddenly everybody

I think at some point Ballmer and his immediate underlings (probably not a technologist among them) realized that the fit with Yahoo was a bad one. Now he pretends the deal isn't doable for other reasons so that the initial concept isn't admitted to be foolish.

But here is my question: Why should Microsoft be allowed to compete in search at all? As long as they are in distant third place it doesn't matter of course. But if they get to be at all successful can't it be claimed they have leveraged their desktop monopoly to do so?

If I were Google I'd have my lawyers all over MS as soon as they got into double digits.

To Jack Deed: MS ARE the bad guys. They have done more to kill innovation in this country than any other single entity. Historians will look back and figure this out. (Intel gets partial credit too.)

Has anyone figured out why Yahoo would want AOL? I'm sure Time Warner would love to dump that turkey before a new CEO is announced at Yahoo. What a disaster that was, and would be for Yahoo. Where is Steve Case anyway!

no matter who jumps ship from yahoo to microsoft the end result is two sinking ships and no real captains on either one.

ballmer is quiet now since he overstepped earlier in the year with his yahoo takeover announcements and aggressive tact.

after yahoo drank its own kool aid and put on the jerry yang nikes, it put the deal to sleep; the side effect was yhoo stock also got killed

so you really have 2 companies in the distant 2nd and 3rd places debating on who gets to cross the finish line.

news flash: the search ad race tape has been broken by google and neither yahoo nor microsoft will catch up

The whole tone of this story has a nasty anti Microsoft bent to it.

"thuggish mugging" for hiring talent? GOOG has stolen plenty of MSFT people yet where are the nasty comments about goog?

From where I am standing this story is not about a YHOO/MSFT deal, is just another valley insider trying to paint MSFT as the bad guy.

he will only do a deal when Yahoo comes to Microsoft ready to go.
__________

I guess for some people they are gonna have to just tell them they will because connect the dots is far too difficult. Tech needs to do something to revive itself and give me an excuse to get out of banks, cartons, and ships.
