As with all of social media… before engaging, you need to be clear about your intention and your goal for using it. If you’re not sure, your experience is going to be less-than-stellar.

As someone who is an avid social media user, this seems like a great idea… whether it’s useful or helpful or a great place to be depends on the individual user.

I like the idea of having all of my social media hot spots viewable in one place… has the potential to make life a lot easier.

And hey, if AOL does it right, I agree Kara, it could give the other networks a run for their money.

most of these social networks are dead ends with no real friends on them… just people who ask to be friends who never were really friends

Well, best of luck to them. But my eyes are starting to glaze over every time I see a new incarnation of these things.

It’s starting to make more sense to me why the Open Social concept makes sense as it allows you to (potentially) choose your own presentation vehicle independently of your “social network”. Maybe I want to have a relatively static web page, maybe I want to run a blog, maybe I want to center my “story” around photo albums.

Facebook, Myspace, Orkut… try to jam all these things onto one page in a format that is either too strict, or so flexible you make a mess of it.

I have zero friends using these things (even among those technically inclined) but I do have friends who’s children use them.

It will be interesting to see if their usage persists after they grow up. Or, should I say IF they grow up.
