Only Microsoft stands to gain anything from the proposed deal. 10s of millions of loyal Yahoo! users will wake up one day to find their search engine is gone.

THAT is an issue worth taking some time to think about.

Advertisers are only likely to see their costs of acquisition go up. Steve Ballmer is already on record as indicating he wants to see increased competition for advertising space on the proposed network. That's not good for anyone trying to buy low-cost ads.

Google is right about how to grow "market share" (which is a bogus metric). Microsoft and Yahoo! just need to get their users to spend more time clicking around their networks.

Search engine market share does not actually measure SEARCH -- it just measures Page Views, which are irrelevant to what happens in search.
