<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is making the most substantive changes in her exec ranks since she did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">massive restructuring of its staff</a> in late February, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>&#8220;She is continuing to clean the place up,&#8221; said one top exec about the moves, which are likely to be announced internally tomorrow.</p>
<p>Among the shifts in management will be filling the slot left by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company">departure of North American Audience head Jeff Dossett</a> in May.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Sources say Yahoo&#8217;s head of mobile, David Ko, will get the job of top Audience exec, although it is not clear if he will have the same portfolio has former media heads at Yahoo. </p>
<p>Since Dossett left, his job has been split between Jimmy Pitaro, who runs Vertical Audience Experiences, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications. They both currently report to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>The job of Audience head is a key role, given that Yahoo&#8217;s powerful media properties are among its most valuable assets. In recent months, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/product-management-engineering-and-ui-design-for-yahoo-news-moving-to-taiwan">Yahoo has made some major changes</a> in the way it creates its juggernaut News property.</p>
<p>Also to be filled is the job being done by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090920/yahoo-corporate-partnership-svp-schinella-departing">Corporate Partnership SVP Jim Schinella</a>, who, as BoomTown previously reported, is set to leave at the end of the year.</p>
<p>I could not determine who will take Schinella&#8217;s job, inside or out.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Yahoo has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/yahoo-poised-to-name-new-international-head-after-five-month-look-see-at-the-crowned-web-heads-of-europe">yet to name an international head</a>.</p>
<p>Sources said the company had filled the position, using a headhunter, but the London-based media exec candidate backed out at the last minute. That  meant Yahoo had to restart its search.</p>
<p>There might also be other top exec changes, all part of Bartz&#8217;s consolidation of power at Yahoo. She has named a spate of new top execs from outside, but has also kept some from the regime of former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>These staffing moves have come even as a stream of execs continued to depart the Silicon Valley Internet giant, including, most recently, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/11/16/right-media-founder-to-leave-yahoo/">Mike Walrath</a>, who was SVP of advertising strategy. Walrath had led Right Media, the online ad exchange Yahoo bought for $680 million in 2007.</p>
<p>Walrath was widely expected to leave Yahoo in July, at the completion of  his earnout from the acquisition, sources said, so the move was more sudden than expected internally. </p>
<p>Sources noted that Bartz moved Walrath&#8217;s departure forward in order to announce a new strategy for Right Media focused on premium publishers and to dump those ad networks and publishers of lesser ilk.</p>
<p>Whether this will stop the competitive onslaught in the ad exchange space is an open question given that Google has entered the fray significantly and that Facebook is widely expected to bolster its efforts.</p>
<p>Lastly, several sources said that there are also likely to be more changes on Yahoo&#8217;s board, which has seen the departure of two members recently.</p>
<p>In September, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090925/yahoo-loses-board-member-wilderotter-to-resign">Maggie Wilderotter</a> said she would leave the board by year&#8217;s end. And former Yahoo nemesis and investor <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091023/goodbye-to-all-that-icahn-leaves-yahoo-board">Carl Icahn</a> left the board in late October.</p>
<p>Whether Yahoo will replace them or keep its current size of 10 directors is not clear.</p>
<p>Also possible, several sources said, would be Bartz taking the chairman title, which is currently held by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090114/yahoos-decker-resigned-with-class-now-chairman-bostock-should-exit-stage-right-too/">Roy Bostock</a>. Bostock, along with Yang, played a key role in its botched takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Bartz finally successfully struck a sweeping search and advertising partnership with the software giant this summer, which is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/exclusive-yahoo-and-microsoft-poised-to-finally-sign-definitive-search-and-ad-agreement/">moving closer to being launched</a>.</p>

<p>The Seattle area is going to get another jobless jolt today, with RealNetworks planning to lay off four percent of its workforce, sources said.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a small number&#8211;just about 70 people out of its 1,700-person staff&#8211;but the move comes on the heels of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091104/microsoft-prepping-layoffs/">layoffs of another 800 employees at nearby Microsoft</a> yesterday.</p>
<p>The software giant has cut thousands of jobs over the last year, part of a move to eliminate 5,000 positions by mid-2010.</p>
<p>While the dismissals&#8211;which are likely to be announced by managers to affected RealNetworks (RNWK) employees sometime this morning&#8211;will be global, both companies are tech leaders with headquarters in the Pacific Northwest.</p>
<p>According to sources, the reasons for the layoffs at RealNetworks are, as was the case at Microsoft (MSFT), to realign the workforce after the recent economic downturn and to control costs.</p>
<p>But RealNetworks could also hire back some of the laid-off employees, as other parts of the company are expanding.</p>
<p>The company had signaled the possibility of staff cuts previously, but had not been specific.</p>
<p>The last staff cuts at the company, which makes digital media software and tools, were larger, about <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081204/realnetworks-cuts-130-75-of-workforce">130 employees sacked about a year ago</a>.</p>
<p>RealNetworks announced better-than-expected third-quarter earnings last week, barely returning to profitability by cutting costs to make up for weaker revenue.</p>

<p>Carl Icahn, the activist billionaire investor who made such a noisy fuss in his quest to force management and other changes at Yahoo, is taking a much quieter leave from the Internet giant&#8217;s board.</p>
<p>He apparently has told the Yahoo (YHOO) board that &#8220;there was not a need at this time for an activist investor&#8221; and that he has a lot of other companies he invests in to focus on.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s true, of course, given a spate of troubled investments that Icahn is dealing with.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s BoomTown&#8217;s quickie analysis: Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz <em>completely</em> ignores him.</p>
<p>In fact, Bartz often has gone out of her way to take little gibes at Icahn since she got the top job in January, whether it&#8217;s to say he called her too much or that he could try to fire her if he did not like the job she was doing.</p>
<p>For example, she just dissed him publicly in a piece in Forbes, tossing off a saucy insult:</p>
<p>“Icahn is just another shareholder. What’s he going to do, fire me?”</p>
<p>But Yahoo was cordial to Icahn as he departed, even if a lot of people at the company who had battled him were likely thinking: &#8220;Don&#8217;t let the door hit you on the way out!&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;Carl has been an important member of our Board and has helped us through some significant transitions,&#8221; said the Yahoo statement. We are all grateful for his active role shaping the future of Yahoo! and wish him well in all his endeavors.&#8221;</p>
<p>Icahn in the second board member to leave under Bartz&#8217;s tenure. </p>
<p>Frontier Communications (FTR) CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090925/yahoo-loses-board-member-wilderotter-to-resign/">Maggie Wilderotter announced in late September that she was stepping down</a> from the board by year&#8217;s end.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see who&#8211;if anyone&#8211;will comes on board as a director and, of course, if there are more departures. After the departures of Wilderotter and Icahn, there will be 10 directors.</p>
<p>(<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090114/yahoos-decker-resigned-with-class-now-chairman-bostock-should-exit-stage-right-too">Here is BoomTown&#8217;s No. 1 pick <em>still</em> </a> in that regard.)</p>
<p>In taking his leave, Icahn praised the recent search and online advertising deal Bartz struck with Microsoft (MSFT), noting that it will &#8220;provide great long-term benefits, the potential of which many still do not understand.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/lolcat-failure.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/lolcat-failure-250x187.jpg" alt="lolcat-failure" title="lolcat-failure" width="250" height="187" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-19943" /></a></p>
<p>Nice final toss to try to spike the stock, Carl! But the MicroHoo deal, which has yet to be approved by regulators, was likely cold comfort for him.</p>
<p>Icahn sank large sums of money in Yahoo with hopes of a big score via the hostile takeover attempt by Microsoft at a price upward of $30 a share. </p>
<p>After that deal tanked, Icahn has seen his stake decline in value.</p>
<p>He <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/i-cahnt-quit-you-without-losing-a-bundle-in-yahoo-shares/">sold 16 percent of his Yahoo shares in late August</a>, leaving him with a 4.5 percent stake, or about 63 million shares.</p>
<p>It is also not clear today if Icahn intends to unload more of the stock.</p>
<p>In 2008, he couldn&#8217;t buy enough, scooping up the stock at much higher prices.</p>
<p>After mounting a proxy fight&#8211;including the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080718/microhoo-the-likely-scenarios-please-ignore-the-poison-pen-letters/">lobbing of a series of poison-pen letters</a>&#8211;against former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang and his management team, Icahn got board seats for himself and two others (John Chapple and Frank Biondi) in July of 2008. </p>
<p>As <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080721/this-meeting-of-yahoo-directors-is-now-called-to-order-no-heckling-carl/">Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski put it</a> perfectly then:</p>
<p>&#8220;Having so persuasively argued that Carl Icahn is a doddering Luddite with no articulated plan for Yahoo other than the company’s sale to Microsoft, Yahoo has taken the logical next step and appointed the activist shareholder to its board of directors.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the time of the fighting, Yahoo used a quote from Icahn to insult him: &#8220;It&#8217;s hard to understand these technology companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a way, that is a pretty accurate description of Icahn&#8217;s long wrangle with the Silicon Valley icon.</p>
<p>And, while some might not agree with my take, this is the way the Yahoo world ends for Icahn: Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.</p>
<p>Here is Icahn&#8217;s entire letter to the Yahoo board:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>To the Yahoo! Board of Directors:</p>
<p>I am hereby tendering my resignation as a director of Yahoo! to take effect immediately.</p>
<p>When I joined the Board, the company was in a state of turmoil. In the period since then, we have all worked together to achieve much for the Company, most notably bringing Carol on to be the CEO and then consummating the search deal with Microsoft. I am proud to have played a role in both these decisions. Carol is doing a great job and I believe the Microsoft transaction will provide great long term benefits, the potential of which many still do not understand.</p>
<p>I don’t believe that it is necessary at this time to have an activist on the Board of Yahoo! and currently, my attention is focused on other matters. As a result, I do not presently have the time that is necessary to devote to the business and affairs of Yahoo! required if a board member is to fulfill his fiduciary duties to the shareholders</p>
<p>Again, I want to thank the members of the Board for acting so responsibly during my tenure. I look forward to maintaining my relationship with each of you.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For a long time now, it has been <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090327/microsoft-acquiring-yahoo-one-employee-at-a-time">Microsoft constantly raiding the Yahoo talent pool</a>, as one top tech exec after another has left its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ to join the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant.</p>
<p>As Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski noted in a post in March titled, &#8220;Microsoft Acquiring Yahoo One Employee at a Time&#8221;:</p>

First, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081120/its-official-yahoo-search-exec-suchter-to-microsoft/">Sean Suchter</a>, VP of search technology at Yahoo, left to become general manager of Microsoft&#8217;s Silicon Valley Search Technology Center. Then, Yahoo search scientist <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/former-yahoo-tech-star-qi-lu-likely-to-be-named-microsofts-digital-head-by-next-week/">Qi Lu</a> followed him, tapped as president of Microsoft&#8217;s Online Services Group. And, soon after that, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090211/what-the-larry-heck-is-happening-to-yahoo-search-another-defection-to-microsoft-thats-what/">Larry Heck</a>, former VP of search &#038; advertising sciences at Yahoo Labs, accepted a job in the R&#038;D department of the software giant&#8217;s online services division. Now, <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-microsoft-hires-yahoo-veteran-as-live-searchs-chief-scientist/">Yahoo alum Jan Pedersen has joined them as well</a>. Admittedly, Pedersen arrives at Microsoft by way of Amazon&#8217;s A9.com. But prior to that gig, he was<a href="http://www.jopedersen.com/resume-2-24-08.htm"> chief scientist and VP, Search and Advertising Technology Group</a> at Yahoo.</p></blockquote>

<p>But Yahoo U.S. advertising sales head Joanne Bradford&#8211;who worked at Microsoft (MSFT) for many years&#8211;obviously knows how to play that game and has managed to grab one of the its top ad sales execs, Seth Dallaire.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) confirmed that Dallaire (pictured here) joined the company last week, as VP of mid-market sales, a newly-created role responsible for all mid-market sales efforts across search and display advertising.</p>
<p>Dallaire had been at Microsoft for seven years, most recently running its retail vertical and Midwest region. Previous to that, he ran business development partnerships at Amazon (AMZN).</p>

<p>Yahoo <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090922/live-from-new-york-yahoo-introduces-you/">introduced its new $100 million marketing and branding campaign</a> in New York today with &#8220;It&#8217;s Y!ou&#8221; as the new motto, making use of the Internet giant&#8217;s famous exclamation point.</p>
<p>Sure, it&#8217;s clever and all, but BoomTown felt the need to jump in and help Yahoo (YHOO), since our posts have been a little tough when it has come to the Silicon Valley icon&#8217;s tumultuous ride over the last two years.</p>
<p>So, while CEO Carol Bartz (pictured above as a giant lady on the Nasdaq Jumbotron in Times Square) explained&#8211;as reported by MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka&#8211;that &#8220;Yahoo is the only site where you when you wake up in the morning and you want to know what’s going on everywhere about everything, you can find it one place,&#8221; I&#8217;d say there&#8217;s more to the brand that just that!</p>
<p>In fact, there&#8217;s Bartz herself, a sassy and ofttimes salty exec whose pugnacious utterances have become legend quickly.</p>
<p>Today, for example, when asked about a comparison with its search rival, she noted, &#8220;Why not be cynical about <em>fricking</em> Google?&#8221;</p>
<p>That was mild in comparison to her cursing me out at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference when she thought I was insinuating she was too old to be an Internet exec (you can see that exchange in the video below).</p>
<p>Thus, please take a gander at our branding effort for Yahoo below. </p>

<p>As a completely virtual company, it&#8217;s nice to get together to gnaw on some ribs and trade tech tales.</p>
<p>Last night, of course, much of the chatter was about what went down at the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-10-am-pdt/">Apple event in San Francisco yesterday</a>, at which CEO and Supreme Leader Steve Jobs made a grand reappearance onstage after a liver transplant.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m vertical, back at Apple and loving every day of it,&#8221; declared Jobs, before introducing a variety of new features and software innovations to the company&#8217;s already strong repertoire, most specifically for <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-itunes-9/">iTunes</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-ipods/">iPods</a>.</p>
<p>(I guess some still stubbornly self-righteous bloggers were a little premature with their <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090106/to-err-is-human-to-live-divine-how-exactly-no-one-got-it-right-about-steve-jobs-health/">hysterical death&#8217;s-door assertions about the Silicon Valley icon and business-challenged certainty that Apple would wither too</a>.)</p>
<p>Overall, from reading the coverage about the Apple (AAPL) gathering, the Jobs performance sounded kind of dramatic, even if there was no launch of a new device, such as the coming-up-next mystery iTablet.</p>
<p>Both Walt Mossberg and Digital Daily&#8217;s John &#8220;Patches&#8221; Paczkowski were at the event, along with Mossberg Solution&#8217;s Katherine Boehret and our Webmaster, master photog and Newton fanboy, Adam Tow (see <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/apple-music-event-photos/">his amazing images of the confab</a> here).</p>
<p>(Walt actually punked me at the BBQ by pretending he actually had a demo of the alleged Apple tablet in his bag&#8211;at which I almost lunged like a lunatic&#8211;when he had no such thing. Ha. Ha.)</p>
<p>In any case, here&#8217;s their frank ruminations on what went down&#8211;not too much new, really, but still interesting, as always, from Apple.</p>
<p>And, separately, after the Apple event was over, Patches went to a meeting with Palm (PALM) to take a gander at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090909/teeny-tiny-pixi-phone-from-palm-tries-killing-giant-hype-for-apple-event-today/">new Pixi smart phone</a> and gives his first thoughts on that too.</p>

<p>Well, what else is Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz going to do but talk smack?</p>
<p>Not at BoomTown&#8211;that was <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/d7-video-carol-bartz-live-and-uncensored/"><em>so</em> two weeks ago</a>! </p>

<p>And, most especially of all, since new stats from comScore (SCOR) yesterday showed that the new look and marketing push for Bing are showing promising initial signs.<br />

According to a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090609/so-much-for-brand-loyalty-in-the-search-market/">post by Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski</a>, &#8220;Microsoft’s new search engine boosted its share of the search market to 11.1 percent from 9.1 percent in the last week. And it bolstered the software giant’s search penetration to 15.5 percent from 13.8 percent.&#8221;</p>
<p>Those results track on some other early surveys that indicate that Bing has been a good effort for the software giant, which is spending $100 million on marketing it alone.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why, no surprise, No-Holds-Barred Bartz has been out on some kind of speaking tour recently, chatting up a storm about Yahoo (YHOO) and its sunny prospects.</p>
<p>In doing so, she has also thrown water on potential deals with Microsoft (MSFT), Bing and a few other errant issues like a possible hook-up with Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL.</p>
<p>(Ixnay onway AOLWAY, by the way, say Bartz).</p>
<p>It is all, as anyone not just tuning in knows by now, part of the Internet company&#8217;s push-me-pull-you relationship with Microsoft, one that Bartz is taking to new levels.</p>
<p>At the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;exactly two weeks ago today, in fact&#8211;<a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/d7-interview-carol-bartz/">Bartz veered into more-positive waters</a> about a Microsoft deal, in a lively onstage interview with me, saying that if Yahoo got a giant pile of money and good data that she was not against the sale of its search business. </p>
<p>And <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/bartz-and-ballmer-meet-one-on-one-at-d7">Bartz and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer also met</a> while at <strong>D7</strong>, continuing ongoing partnership discussions.</p>
<p>Then, at an investor conference last week, she tacked negative and said she thought the prospects for the Silicon Valley icon would be &#8220;cleaner&#8221; without a Microsoft search and advertising deal. </p>
<p>Even better&#8211;or worse: &#8220;I personally think we would be better off if we never heard the word &#8216;Microsoft.&#8217;”</p>
<p>Those comments cleanly knocked five percent off of Yahoo shares.</p>
<p>Then, yesterday in an interview on Fox Business Network, while dinging any AOL merger deal&#8211;which had been discussed by her predecessor, Jerry Yang&#8211;as not happening &#8220;anytime in the forever future,&#8221; Bartz said Yahoo search was strong enough to fight for share with both Google (GOOG) and Microsoft.</p>
<p>And of the Bing gains in early surveys, she noted: &#8220;One day is one day&#8230;it does not a trend make.&#8221; </p>
<p>Well, Bartz <em>hopes</em> not!</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why she also carefully&#8211;and in an unusually modulated tone for her&#8211;kept the door open to Microsoft: &#8220;If you talk about search in general, you could partner with somebody.&#8221;</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t know about anyone else, but my head is spinning from all the public zig-zagging by Bartz (pictured here).</p>
<p>But, at the heart of it is one fact: When it comes to search, Yahoo has no true strategic alternative&#8211;except to spend on marketing and innovation, as much as Google and Microsoft can, to keep up. </p>
<p>Because, with Bing, Microsoft has finally presented a definite challenger to Yahoo&#8217;s search product that will likely improve with time.</p>
<p>With the intense marketing, Microsoft is betting it can make Bing stick with consumers for more than just one try. </p>
<p>The jury is still out on that, of course, but combined with the various search distribution deals both Microsoft and Google have grabbed away from Yahoo, it is more than quite possible that Yahoo could lose market share. </p>
<p>And, if that turns out to be more than one or two points, that could mean trouble&#8211;from investors, Wall Street, noisy media, to name a few of the most annoying&#8211;for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Thus, it is a dicey game of chicken that Bartz is playing, as one person close to the companies said quite succinctly: &#8220;She can ride it down or make the deal.&#8221;</p>
<p>My prediction: Bartz will keep up the tough talk, but&#8211;in the end&#8211;make a deal.</p>

<p>Does the tech march ever slow down? </p>
<p>Not this week it doesn&#8217;t! And Digital Daily&#8217;s live-blogger de tutti live-bloggers <a href="http://www.digitaldaily.com">John Paczkowski</a> will be there to cover every move.</p>
<p>Today, in case you haven&#8217;t heard, is the big annual Apple (AAPL) event: The <a href="http://developer.apple.com/WWDC/">Worldwide Developers Conference</a> in San Francisco.</p>
<p>The keynote at the Moscone Center kicks off at 10 AM PDT with Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, along with other Apple execs. They will be presenting to 1,000 developers, at what is now the only major products event for the iconic and innovative Silicon Valley company.</p>
<p>A passel of press, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/wwdc-2009-keynote-live/">as well as John</a>, will also be there, along with our Web guru (and closet Apple expert) Adam Tow. They&#8217;ll be liveblogging and posting photos to the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> site throughout the event.</p>
<p>It&#8217;ll be a lot of iPhone news, according to reports, with possibly an upgraded device and all sorts of new features and software.</p>
<p>But, unless it is their lucky day, Apple fanboys likely to have to wait a little bit longer for the return of Apple&#8217;s leader Steve Jobs, presumably astride a steed bearing a giant tablet iPod Touch.</p>
<p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124415751596986965.html">According to The Wall Street Journal</a> last week&#8211;whose report is <em>finally, finally, finally</em> the most solid, thus far&#8211;Jobs is set to return soon to the helm of Apple after a six-month sick leave.</p>
<p>And that means <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090106/to-err-is-human-to-live-divine-how-exactly-no-one-got-it-right-about-steve-jobs-health/">reports of Jobs&#8217; imminent demise early this year were, as it turned out, quite premature</a>.</p>
<p>Which makes it laughable that those who trumpeted someone&#8217;s allegedly fatal illness without even close to adequate sourcing are now&#8211;as the specifics of their clear overreaching have faded&#8211;they were sort-of right, since, you know, he <em>was</em> sick. </p>
<p>But let me review what was reported then, using a single source: Jobs was “declining rapidly” and “it may be even worse than we imagined” and, quoting the source directly: “Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs. letting the hype destroy Apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.”</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/jobsd.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/jobsd-250x166.jpg" alt="jobsd" title="jobsd" width="250" height="166" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-14271" /></a></p>
<p>Oops, it is June now and Jobs appears to be on the mend, it did not turn out to be worse, even if he was quite sick, and spring has passed without the &#8220;inevitable&#8221; happening. Close is only right in horse shoes, especially in this case. </p>
<p>Who knows what tomorrow will bring. I certainly don&#8217;t, but neither does anyone else, which is why&#8211;unless you&#8217;re looking at Jobs&#8217; medical reports or hearing from someone who has seen them&#8211;it&#8217;s pretty much an impossible story to get right either way. </p>
<p>So, no matter how much they try to defend themselves in a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/07/business/media/07ping.html">recent piece in the New York Times</a> (which was silly enough in its toothless blogger-bashing)&#8211;claiming it is fine and dandy to insinuate that someone is at death&#8217;s door without, you know, knowing for sure if it were <em>true</em>&#8211;it&#8217;s just lame all around.</p>
<p>But, lamer still was the climbing-onto-a-very-high-and-precarious-horse reaction to that dopey Times article, by giving these dog-ate-my-homework reporting lapses the even sillier moniker of &#8220;process&#8221; journalism.</p>
<p>I confess I am utterly flummoxed by this term, because it seems to boil down to: </p>
<p><em>We have a firm commitment to report it wrong until we, um, get it right or someone, anyone, please hurry, corrects us&#8211;not that we&#8217;ll ever admit an error, just like mainstream media!</em></p>
<p>Actually, it sounds more like processed cheese journalism&#8211;completely without nutrition and eventually bad for readers&#8217; health. But eat up and get obese on it, because it&#8217;s free and cheap and even tasty at times!</p>
<p>But, I digress.</p>
<p>After all the Apple news is chewed and re-chewed up by one and all, Google (GOOG) will be holding an app event tomorrow, also in San Francisco.</p>

<p>Said a Google email: &#8220;At this invitation-only media gathering, we&#8217;ll announce product news, share perspectives of new enterprise customers, see demos, and review the Google Apps business. You&#8217;ll have the opportunity to speak with a number of senior IT decision makers who have moved their businesses to cloud computing, as well as Google executives, and engineering and product managers. We hope you&#8217;ll be able to join.&#8221;</p>
<p>Paczkowski will, of course, join and be serving up organic liveblogging fare, full of vitamins and minerals and all the good stuff, both fast and accurate!</p>
<p>Process <em>that</em>.</p>
<p>But, fear not, it will also be, as usual, quite tasty too.</p>

Ironically, Walt Mossberg and I planned to launch the very first conference in the middle of the last major downturn for tech, in 2001. But, in the carnage of the Web 1.0 meltdown, we actually held off for two years, with our first D gathering taking place in 2003.

Well, we're still going--making the same long-term bet that the digital revolution will keep rolling as we did at D1. Here's our lineup for D7.]]></description>

<p>We feel <em>very</em> lucky to get here, especially in the midst of what our own site&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com">Digital Daily scribe, John Paczkowski</a>, has so perfectly dubbed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/category/econalypse/">&#8220;econalypse.&#8221;</a></p>

<p>It&#8217;s been a real winning streak since then for <strong>D</strong>, due in large part to our great speakers&#8211;such as Microsoft (MSFT) icon Bill Gates and Apple (AAPL) legend Steve Jobs.</p>

<p>Both have been onstage many times over the years, including a <a href="http://d5.allthingsd.com/20070531/video-steve-jobs-and-bill-gates-highlight-reel/">historic interview the pair of tech titans did together in 2007</a> at <strong>D5</strong>.</p>
<p>Other amazing speakers have included: Howard Stringer of Sony (SNE), Barry Diller of InterActiveCorp (IACI), legendary director George Lucas, Time Warner (TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes, Jeff Bezos of Amazon (AMZN), former eBay (EBAY) CEO Meg Whitman, News Corp. (NWS) head Rupert Murdoch, Microsoft head Steve Ballmer, Walt Disney (DIS) honcho Bob Iger, Bobby Kotick of Activision Blizzard (ATVI), CBS (CBS) CEO Les Moonves, Democratic and Republican pols like former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John McCain, all the leadership of Google (GOOG) and many, many more.</p>
<p>We have had a lot of great moments onstage with all these tech and media players over the years, to be sure, with interviews ranging from the funny to the sublime to the truly disastrous. </p>
<p>But, like the digital industry and the innovation our conference focuses on, we also like to lean forward to try to figure out what the Next Big Thing is around the corner, whether it comes from Silicon Valley or not.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re kicking off our conference on May 26 with two of the founders of Twitter&#8211;Biz Stone and Evan Williams&#8211;who are riding high on tech&#8217;s latest hot thing, which might turn out to be either a rocket ship or a shooting star.</p>
<p>They&#8217;ll be followed up over the next two days by a plethora of interesting players, from the leaders of several major mobile companies to content execs hit hard by fast-moving digital forces to a new Internet leader like Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is trying to turn around one of the Web&#8217;s great icons from its more recent lackluster path.</p>
<p>And, as we always do, we will be featuring a spate of demos too, trying to see if we can unearth that next <em>next</em> thing.</p>
<p>In the past, the <strong>D</strong> stage has seen the debut of start-up products like Sling Media&#8217;s Slingbox, Aliph&#8217;s Jawbone and Pure Digital&#8217;s Flip, all of which have gone onto glory. And also some, like Palm&#8217;s Foleo, which did not.</p>
<p>While not everyone can attend <strong>D</strong>, our crack staff is committed to bringing all the action from this year&#8217;s conference to readers of the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> site via up-to-the-minute blogs, photos, videos, tweets, digs and more. We&#8217;ll also, as soon as we can, post the videos of each of the onstage sessions, in their entirety.</p>

<p>But perhaps the best headline and first sentence of the plethora of stories about the $7 billion buyout debacle, which seems sure to get horribly messy now, is from <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/06/sun-ibm-merger-technology-enterprise-sun.html">Andy Greenberg of Forbes.com</a>:</p>
<p>The headline: &#8220;Sun May Be Pulling A Yahoo!&#8221;</p>
<p>And lede: &#8220;Sun Microsystems is facing its Jerry Yang moment.&#8221;</p>
<p>I wonder if every failed tech merger with a squabblefest and a board in chaos will now be accused of blowing it, as most think the Yahoo (YHOO) co-founder and former CEO Yang did in rejecting the $41 billion offer from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>In an interesting aside, speaking of the <a href="http://www.sun.com/company/cgov/board.jsp">chaotic Sun board</a>, one of its members is none other than Peter Currie.</p>

<p>Currie (pictured here) just inherited another potential mess over at Facebook, when he agreed to step in to take over as a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090401/meet-peter-currie-facebooks-new-money-man-for-now">financial adviser to the social-networking site</a>, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially/">abruptly replaced CFO Gideon Yu</a> last week.</p>
<p>Sounds like Currie, the former Netscape CFO and investor&#8211;who knows from unnatural disaster from his long years in Silicon Valley&#8211;has his hands full now.</p>

<p>Today, for interested lawyers, the American Bar Association is hosting a &#8220;brown bag&#8221; lunch and discussion in Washington, D.C. on the now-scuttled Google/Yahoo deal.</p>
<p>Ominously titled: THE GOOGLE/YAHOO! AGREEMENT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR FUTURE ANTITRUST ENFORCEMENT IN ONLINE ADVERTISING, the event will be held at noon until 1:30 pm EST at the law offices of Cadwalader, Wickersham &#038; Taft at 1201 F Street NW. (Cadwalader worked for Microsoft on its failed Yahoo bid, by the way.)</p>
<p>Still, the gathering could not come at a more perfect time, given that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090129/google-search-market-blob/">comScore&#8217;s 2008 Digital Year In Review report</a>, released yesterday, showed the power of Google (GOOG) at an all-time high, no matter how much Yahoo-chasing, lawyer-rattling and lobbying Microsoft (MSFT) has done.</p>
<p>According to Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski:</p>
<p>&#8220;Google began the year claiming 58.5 percent of all search queries and ended it with 63.5 percent. Moreover, of the 137 billion search queries conducted in the states last year, 85 billion were handled by Google. That means Google claimed nearly 90 percent of the total growth in search query volume for the year.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition, Google was ranked as the top U.S. Internet property for 2008 and its influence even outpaced Internet growth. The U.S. Internet population grew four percent in 2008, while Google sites, such as the flagship Google, YouTube and Blogger, grew 12 percent.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft have both lagged far behind in the search market.</p>
<p>BoomTown&#8217;s translation of those scary-Google stats: The Justice Department Lawyer&#8211;Antitrust Division&#8211;Employment Act of, <em>say</em>, 2015.</p>

<p><em>When Google and Yahoo! abandoned their proposed agreement last November, the Justice Department issued a statement identifying relevant antitrust markets and addressing the likelihood of anticompetitive effects.</p>
<p>Post Google/Yahoo!, the intersection of antitrust law, economics and online advertising technology continues to raise fascinating questions about how to analyze competition in this dynamic industry. During this round table, a distinguished panel will discuss the investigation and its implications for future antitrust enforcement in online advertising.</p>
<p>Participants will include: Aaron Hoag (Department of Justice Antitrust Division), David Gelfand (Cleary Gottlieb Steen &#038; Hamilton LLP), Michael Weiner (Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher &#038; Flom LLP), Marius Schwartz (Georgetown University &#038; Bates White) and Jonathan Kanter (Cadwalader, Wickersham &#038; Taft LLP). <p>One can hope for His Digital Holiness, but the event might be more about Mac minis and 17-inch Macbook Pros, as most expect.</p>

<p>The prospect of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081216/apples-last-macworld/">no Steve Jobs keynote and Apple&#8217;s last year at IDG&#8217;s annual Macworld</a> Conference &#038; Expo is sure to do five things:</p>
<p>1. Send the legions of Apple (APPL) fanboys&#8211;whose attendance at the January event has been akin to those who flock to sightings of the Virgin Mary in various places like, <em>um</em>, toast&#8211;into a deep chasm of depression from which they will never recover. </p>
<p>2. Renew rampant and unsubstantiated speculation about the health of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, which will immediately impact the stock of the tech icon. In fact, Apple shares are already down almost six percent in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>3. Begin rampant and unsubstantiated speculation about a power struggle within Apple among the potential successors to Jobs, including product czar Phil Schiller&#8211;who is giving the keynote&#8211;and COO Tim Cook. This utterly ignores the fact that you actually need more than one person to run a major corporation, even with His Digital Holiness in charge.</p>
<p>4. Result in a series of spurious reports of what cool new product the company will and will not release at the event, reports that BoomTown has calculated on my handy-dandy abacus are typically 83 percent wrong. Incredibly, the company always seems about to release something, because I seem to keep buying.</p>
<p>5. As Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski noted in a tweet just now: &#8220;Man, they must be chugging Mylanta by the gallon over at IDG corporate right now.&#8221;</p>

<p>So far, I have used my kids, known to authorities as the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081015/ay-chihuahua-a-donorschooseorg-threat-from-my-kids/">Swisher boys, to deliver a threatening pitch</a> about why you should give early and often to fund technology projects for high school students.</p>
<p>I have also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081007/a-donorschoose-high-school-musical-a-very-awkward-dance-for-the-kids/">danced with Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang in &#8220;High School Musical 3&#8243;</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081001/a-donorschooseorg-miracle-my-dinner-with-jerry-and-boomtown-plans-to-vanquish-the-naked-scoble/">forced him into a painful dinner</a> (thanks, Jerry!).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.donorschoose.org">DonorsChoose.org</a> is a charity that funds classroom projects in high-need public schools, using the Web to match teacher project requests with donors. </p>
<p>So far, I have raised $8,414 from 26 donors, impacting 704 students. But am still No. 3 behind the my longtime frenemy venture capitalist Fred Wilson and TechCrunch.</p>
<p>Congrats to both, but this obviously cannot stand! There is one more day to give, so get giving!</p>
