Peter Kafka Takes On the Mediamorphosis in New ATD MediaMemo Blog

Oh, BoomTown could not resist making the obvious literary pun on the debut of Peter Kafka’s new daily blog, MediaMemo, on AllThingsD.com.

I am referencing, of course, Franz Kafka’s famous 1915 novella, “Metamorphosis,” about a man who turns into a bug–except that the transformation is fraught with so much more meaning.

And thus it will be in Peter’s column, as the most excellent writer and reporter plunges into the topic–as he writes in his first explanatory post–of “the ongoing battle between the established media business and the technology that is reshaping it day by day.”

Apple, Apple All Around, but Not a Drop of Thinking

Hey, did you hear that Apple is launching some sort of new notebook thingamabob today?

If you didn’t, it can’t be because the Apple-product-release-hyper-hype cycle let you down.

AllThingsD.com’s Johnny Apple-blogger John Paczkowski of Digital Daily will be there, of course, posting at the media-clogged launch, as it happens, and contributing mightily to the blog-smog that will start collecting over Cupertino at 10 a.m. PDT.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Layoff Alert: Not If … When

With the economic situation obviously worsening–don’t say you weren’t warned–BoomTown has no doubt now that Internet companies are in the midst of reevaluating their troop numbers to streamline themselves for the coming few months of financial winter.

That’s why, according to several sources at Yahoo, for example, top execs are telling some employees that the company is considering options to get itself sized right for an expected slowdown in the advertising market.

Why now? Well, it is critically important that Yahoo give Wall Street a solid performance when it reports third-quarter earnings on Oct. 21, for the period ending Sept. 30.

Live From New York: ATD Hires Peter Kafka to Pen a New Media and Advertising Blog

Although we did not raid the offices of Silicon Alley Insider and “steal” Peter Kafka, as the fanciful SAI kingpin Henry Blodget alleges–had it been a raid, BoomTown would have properly hog-tied Blodget so he could not make such spurious allegations!–it is true that SAI’s current managing editor (pictured here) will be coming to work for us at AllThingD.com soon.

He will write a daily still-unnamed new media blog from New York City, starting at the end of October.

Yahoo’s New Marketing Push: Purple Rain! (Actually, Purple Pain.)

First off, as Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski pointed out to me today, you have to give Yahoo props for using Gogol Bordello as the soundtrack and–more to the point–actually knowing about Gogol Bordello in the first place.

“Since when does [Yahoo CEO Jerry] Yang listen to gypsy punk?” asked Paczkowski in an email to me today.

Since Bill Gates started eating churros with Jerry Seinfeld and adjusting his skivvies hands-free, that’s when!

Oh dear, Yahoo has succumbed to the hipster, ironic thing–an unfortunate marketing virus that has hit Microsoft of late, too–in an under-the-covers “Start Wearing Purple” online marketing campaign.

Apple Predictions + Grain of Salt = Impossible

As usual before yet another big Apple event, the psychic friends network is in overdrive in anticipation of the iconic computer company’s “Let’s Rock” media gathering in San Francisco tomorrow.

At this point, I think Apple could announce a change in the color of its bathrooms at its Cupertino HQ and it would be mayhem among the Mac faithful.

But some of the focus is likely to be on its leader, Steve Jobs, whose gaunt appearance was the talk of Apple’s last event.

The Entire Google Chrome Browser Blog Announcement

As was reported earlier today by BoomTown, Google confirmed on its blog that it will launch its new Chrome browser tomorrow.

Google said it would be launching Chrome in 100 countries, but but will only be available in beta in Windows (Google said Mac and Linux versions were coming soon).

The move by the search giant, although the blog does not say so, is clearly a direct shot over the bow of Microsoft, which dominates the browser market with 74 percent share.

Here is the full blog post by Sundar Pichai, VP Product Management at Google, and Linus Upson, Engineering Director.

Welcome to ATD, Therese–and a Belated Welcome to Eric

As readers of AllThingsD.com might have noticed, we added columnist Therese Poletti to the main rail of the site today.

Her twice-weekly column, Tech Tales, which appears on MarketWatch on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will also be published here too.

Poletti joins Eric Savitz of Barron’s, whose posts on his Tech Trader Daily blog about tech stocks have been appearing on the front of ATD several times a day for the past month.

Video: Patches Goes to iPhone 3G Keynote at WWDC and Lives to Tell the Tale!

iphone3g

John “Patches” Paczkowski live-blogged from Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference today, featuring yet another much-anticipated–are there any that are not?–keynote by the company’s leader Steve Jobs.

Thus, BoomTown got our Digital Daily scribe’s take on the event, where new features and other pretty-shiny-things were unveiled by Jobs, in a video shot at ATD HQ.

Special D6 Tab in The Wall Street Journal

d6

The Wall Street Journal published a special tab about our sixth D: All Things Digital conference that took place live two weeks ago.

The Journal editors selected about half of the interviews done there by Walt Mossberg and me, either separately or together, and edited the longer transcripts down to the parts they thought readers would like best.

WWDC: What Will Di Capi (di Tutti Apple) Do?

wwdc

Hey, BoomTown just heard that Apple’s having some kind of conference for its developers today and there will be–what is the name they are calling it?–a “keynote” by some guy named Steve.

Blah, blah, blah on some new iPhone with three Gs. With GPS, video recording, more space, a better camera and an ability to beam you up to the Starship Enterprise.

AllThingsD: All Things (Re-)Designed!

dsymbol

Today, we debut our new redesign of the home screen of AllThingsD.com.

It is, in fact, our second redesign since we launched the site in late April of 2007, although it is a much more drastic redesign, with a lot more elements added.

Why did we do it? No, we are not hyperactive (OK, we are, but we are taking medication for that).

All Things Don’t-Blink-or-You’ll-Miss-It!

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft (MSFT). News Corp.’s (NWS) Rupert Murdoch. Jeff Bewkes of Time Warner (TWX). Yahoo’s (YHOO) Jerry Yang.
All of them engaged in roiling Internet deal-making of late and all of them in just three weeks on the same stage–but not, thankfully, at the same time, or we’d need a professional [...]

Waltgelina at Macworld, Part 1!

When BoomTown was at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, I followed my partner-in-tech-crime Walt Mossberg and Katherine Boehret around the floor of the famous gadgetfest with my annoying video camera (truth be told, I am the irksome one and the camera simply my tool of choice).
And because Walt is so [...]
