<p>The new MSN homepage debuts tonight and you would be completely correct in thinking the recipe Microsoft (MSFT) has cooked up to inform its design ethos&#8211;white, clean and hiply modern&#8211;has definite echoes of a certain longtime tech rival.</p>
<p>That would be Apple (AAPL), of course, with a big dollop of Twitter and Facebook tossed in, and finished off with a generous sprinkling of Microsoft&#8217;s new Bing search service.</p>
<p>For those who care: The MSN butterfly logo remains, although it appears to have lost a lot of weight too.</p>

<p>The launch is the first major upgrade of the MSN main page in&#8211;if you can believe it&#8211;a decade, part of an overhaul that the software giant has been doing throughout its money-losing online services division.</p>
<p>That has included the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-steve-ballmer/">launch of Bing in May</a>, which has been a success for Microsoft, adding a small amount of search market share and, more importantly, some much needed respect to its long-beleaguered consumer Web efforts.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s online execs are trying to keep up the innovation momentum with the new MSN redesign and&#8211;as you can see below from the various screenshots&#8211;it is a major shift for the portal site.</p>
<p>Together, MSN and Windows Live have about 100 million unique monthly visitors, putting Microsoft typically third behind Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The company hopes to do better with a fresher MSN, which is clearly aimed, first and foremost, at clearing up the clutter and link-heavy old MSN homepage.</p>
<p>MSN execs said the new main page has about half the &#8220;blue&#8221; links.</p>

<p>The top of the new page features a big image module, with inline video and drastically reduced topic areas&#8211;as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better">BoomTown has previously reported</a>&#8211;limited to news, sports, entertainment, money and lifestyle.</p>

<p>Under that is a more customizable news module, to which feature tabs can also be added, such as for the World Series or&#8211;<em>prolonged sigh</em>&#8211;Balloon Boy coverage.</p>
<p>On the bottom left is a much-goosed local module that resolves to beefed-up local sites, which is right next another section featuring Bing top searches.</p>
<p>Bing is present in every part of the site now, with Microsoft stressing it and using its structured data to improve the consumer experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important for Bing search too, since MSN provides 45 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Communications modules are to the right, midpage and on the bottom. </p>
<p>Unlike AOL and Yahoo, which have added the ability to put third-party email on their homepages, only Hotmail is now available on the new MSN, although this is likely to change soon.</p>
<p>But perhaps the design element that will garner the most attention is the prominent placement of both Twitter and Facebook tabs in the bottom communications module, right next to one for Windows Live.</p>
<p>This allows users to update their status and get instant access to the status of friends and followers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to cut the clutter, while also giving users one convenient place to find what they need quickly,&#8221; said Scott Moore, executive producer of MSN in the U.S., its most important market, in an interview earlier today with me.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are overloaded with information and they wanted us to fix that, even if the service is not ours.&#8221;</p>
<p>The focus on Facebook and Twitter was simply due to intense user interest in the popular social networking sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has popped and Twitter was really growing,&#8221; said Moore, who noted that there was the possibility of adding other third-party apps in the future.</p>
<p>A heavy emphasis on apps was a key <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">strategy of Yahoo&#8217;s homepage redesign</a>, officially launched in late July, which SVP Tapan Bhat touted at an meeting with analysts last week as having increased page views and engagement.</p>
<p>Advertising on the page is perhaps the most conservative part, with units that remain largely as before.</p>
<p>The new MSN homepage will begin rolling out now, eventually reaching about 10 percent of users by early next year. After that, it is expected to become widely available to U.S. customers and then go worldwide.</p>

<p>Lonely Planet, best known as a traditional travel guidebook publisher, is announcing a new U.S. head tomorrow, as it increasingly moves to reposition the company as much more of a &#8220;cross-media&#8221; platform.</p>
<p>John Boris&#8211;set to take over today as new managing director of Lonely Planet Americas, based at its Oakland, Calif., office&#8211;comes to the company from Zagat Survey, where he was the SVP of marketing and interactive.</p>
<p>Previous to that, Boris worked at 1-800 Flowers and Fresh Direct.</p>
<p>“I’m thrilled to be joining one of the world’s best-loved travel brands at such an exciting time, with Lonely Planet rapidly evolving as a cross-media travel player,&#8221; he said in a press release.</p>
<p>As the paid versus free content online debate gets louder over the next year, how well known brands like Lonely Planet&#8211;which has a strong reputation among consumers&#8211;handle the fallout will be more and more interesting to watch.</p>
<p>Indeed, in recent months, Lonely Planet has been escalating its digital content efforts, which was the initial promise when BBC Worldwide bought 75 percent of the Melbourne, Australia-based company for about $200 million in late 2007.</p>
<p>But the digitization of Lonely Planet&#8217;s business, as with many traditional media publishers like it, has been slow going, with 75 percent of its revenue still in print.</p>
<p>While that business remains profitable, the breakdown between print and digital will be changing sooner than later, since digital is where much of the growth is coming from, said CEO Matt Goldberg to me over a recent dinner in San Francisco. </p>
<p>Goldberg&#8211;who came to Lonely Planet early this year from Dow Jones, where he was SVP of digital strategy and operations, including for WSJ.com&#8211;noted that Lonely Planet&#8217;s digital businesses have doubled their revenues to $20 million this year via premium pricing and advertising.</p>
<p>Besides the obvious use of Twitter and Facebook, Goldberg flagged a number of the more promising and innovative digital initiatives now at work at Lonely Planet, especially in its key U.S. market.</p>
<p>They include:</p>
<p>* Leveraging the 700,000 registered members of Lonely Planet&#8217;s Thorn Tree community, </p>
<p>* The announcement this week of putting all or part of 600 of its travel guides on the international release of the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle e-reader.</p>
<p>* Work on collaborative trip planning for its &#8220;Trippy&#8221; gadget, as part of the Google Wave beta launched last week.  </p>
<p>* A compass application for Google (GOOG) Android handsets that make use of augmented reality technology to highlight points of interest in cities. As Goldberg described it in an email, travelers will be able to &#8220;pan a city destination using the video on their handset and see Lonely Planet recommendations (points of interest from our City Guides) as virtual sticky notes above real live points of interest.&#8221;</p>
<p>* Over 500,000 downloads from around 70 premium-priced apps on the iPhone from Apple (AAPL), as well as various location-based guide apps for Nokia (NOK) and BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM).</p>
<p>* Travel music collections featured on Spotify and other online music services.</p>
<p>Goldberg highlighted other interesting ideas, such as an online travel video contest and even a &#8220;hack&#8221; day in Australia recently, which will be followed by one in the U.S. in the late winter.</p>
<p>While not all of it is going to work, this kind of endless experimentation at Lonely Planet is probably the right way to keep figuring out how to deal with the seismic media shifts that show no sign of abating.</p>

<p>The former head of Google Health, Adam Bosworth, officially unveiled his much anticipated health-care start-up today at the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco, showing off a site that will offer step-by-step and personalized &#8220;care plans,&#8221; as well as many kinds of online tools to better understand the data and tips on how to stay healthy.</p>
<p>Before he did so, BoomTown did a video interview with Bosworth this morning about Keas, which he founded with George Kassabgi.</p>
<p>As it turns out, Google Health is, in fact, one of Keas&#8217;s partners at launch, along with Microsoft HealthVault, Quest Diagnostics, Healthwise, DiabetesMine and Dr. Greene Pediatrics.</p>
<p>Bosworth said he hopes to attract many others to make innovative plans, much as developers make apps for smart phones.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s perfect timing, given the health-care debate now raging in Washington, which is about how people make health-care decisions&#8211;or, more precisely, how they usually do not.</p>
<p>Bosworth left the search giant in the fall of 2007 because he wanted to create a nimble and easy-to-use site to enable better engagement by consumers in their health care, especially around diet, exercise and how people manage long-term conditions, such as diabetes.</p>
<p>But, while a lot of people use the Web to get health information, they&#8211;as well as doctors&#8211;have been warier about using Internet tools to help them manage and understand their health.</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT), where Bosworth also worked for many years, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091001/msn-debuts-health">released a health information management tool last week too, called My Health Info</a>, although Keas is clearly much more robust and authoritative. </p>
<p>But Bosworth said the more, the healthier.</p>
<p>He also pointed out that he is working with Microsoft too, as well as Google (GOOG), given that the pair have the power to get big amounts of information about health care online.</p>
<p>Now, he added, sites like Keas will be key to allowing consumers to manage and interpret that mass of often confusing data.</p>
<p>Keas, which is backed by Atlas Ventures and Ignition Partners and has 25 staffers, is allowing free use of its care plans now, but will eventually charge for use of certain features.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the interview I did with Bosworth about all this and more, including the origin of the site&#8217;s unusual name:</p>

<p>Way back in the fall of 2001, when BoomTown was but a less-aged version of myself, I attended a keynote speech at the now-defunct Comdex show in Las Vegas, where Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates continued to bang the drum for one of his long-running obsessions: The tablet computer.</p>
<p>&#8220;The tablet takes cutting-edge PC technology and makes it available whenever you want it, which is why I&#8217;m already using a tablet as my everyday computer,&#8221; Gates said at the time to the audience gathered at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. &#8220;It’s a PC that is virtually without limits and within five years I predict it will be the most popular form of PC sold in America.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, that did not happen.</p>
<p>But Gates did keep his promise about using a tablet&#8211;he kept on doing so and also harping on the topic all the time, with Microsoft even releasing a giant tabletop Surface several years ago and supporting multitouch in the coming Windows 7.</p>
<p>I recall Gates talking about the idea of how important the tablet is on innumerable occasions, more than any single concept I can recall.</p>
<p>It is ironic, then, that all the hype has suddenly and firmly coalesced around the particulars of the tablet that Apple (AAPL) will be unveiling in the coming months. </p>
<p>And now that CEO Steve Jobs is back fine-tuning the whole shebang, the obsession has moved into overdrive, punctuated only by endless stories about every single new app for the iPhone and fights over some of those new apps for the iPhone.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a complete aside, but how ironic is it that Apple has somehow managed to make Google (GOOG)&#8211;the Skynet of the Internet&#8211;seem like a victim over this Google Voice shrillathon?</p>
<p>Back to the Apple tablet, which is playbook hype for iconic computer giant.</p>
<p>Besides being a secret project everyone in Silicon Valley seems to know about, the coming device is enjoying full-on breathless reportage of every single possible button and every possible feature, with every single bit of functionality parsed, dissected, masticated and spat back out. </p>
<p>But let&#8217;s be honest&#8211;in the end, this Apple tablet is probably going to be some kind of giant, sleeker, more glorified and doubtlessly niftier version of the iPod touch, called the iTab or the iPad or the iAmSoCoolAren&#8217;tI?, at three times the price.</p>
<p>Now, as it turns out, Microsoft (MSFT) is also at work on a table device, this time called the Courier.</p>
<p>This development became known recently after a demo video of it in use was somehow &#8220;leaked&#8221;&#8211;three guesses about which software giant in Redmond, Wash., put that out, and the first two don&#8217;t count!&#8211;to <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5365299/courier-first-details-of-microsofts-secret-tablet">Gizmodo</a>.</p>
<p>It seems to be some kind of tablet mixed with a journal mixed with a day planner, with a hinged two-page look. Digital writing and a stylus are involved, but also lots of touchscreen action.</p>
<p>Well, I say, good for Microsoft, and perhaps for Gates, who has now mostly disengaged himself from the day-to-day particulars of the behemoth he built, including the Courier.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, in all likelihood, Apple will still garner the most buzz in this tablet faceoff and will, more than likely, sell more.</p>
<p>A delicious irony, given that in their fascinating and long-running rivalry, it has usually been Jobs playing the hopeless dreamer and Gates the one who makes bank from the dreams of others.</p>
<p>No longer, which should make this round between Microsoft and Apple the most interesting of all.</p>

<p>In other words, Sally-Field-at-the-Oscars territory&#8211;it&#8217;s where they love you, they <em>really</em> love you.</p>
<p>To grok this, you&#8217;ll need to view the two charts below from Flurry Analytics, a mobile analytics and monetization tools start-up in San Francisco, from a blog post titled <a href="http://blog.flurry.com/bid/26376/Mobile-Apps-Models-Money-and-Loyalty">&#8220;Mobile Apps: Models, Money and Loyalty.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Flurry used a sample size of 2,000 live applications and 200 million user sessions on the IPhone and iPod touch from Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) Android, Blackberry from Research in Motion (RIMM), and other platforms.</p>
<p>In Quadrant I are reference, news, and weather apps, which are frequently accessed and retained longer. </p>
<p>Quadrant IV is also good, with high retention rates&#8211;education, social networking, medical&#8211;but less frequent weekly use.</p>

<p>Longtime Internet entrepreneur Al Warms paid a visit to BoomTown HQ today to show off a new company he has founded called <a href="http://www.appolicious.com">Appolicious</a>.</p>
<p>That is the unusual name Warms&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070914/day-59-yahoo-buys-buzztracker">sold his Participate Media</a>, along with its BuzzTracker content aggregator, to Yahoo in late 2007&#8211;has given to a start-up aimed at encouraging discovery and social networking in the Apple (AAPL) iPhone mobile apps market.</p>
<p>Warms left Yahoo (YHOO) last fall and started Appolicious in May of this year with about $500,000 in seed funding. </p>
<p>The site is kind of a combination of Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo, with some Yelp sprinkled in, but devoted solely to organizing and making sense of the app galaxy in the universe of smart phones.</p>
<p>Right now, the innovative site just focuses on iPhone apps&#8211;<em>are there any others?</em>&#8211;but Warms said he will soon include other mobile platforms, such as the BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM).</p>
<p>Using premium content, recommendations of friends and also people like you&#8211;as well as a variety of lists, feeds, popularity rankings, images and videos&#8211;the idea is to do what the iTunes store does not. </p>
<p>Namely, make sense of the plenitude of apps out there, most of which are on the iPhone.</p>
<p>To make that happen, users of the service also can list all the iPhone apps they have in an App Library so others can see if they too own the iFart app (message to self: Hide that app <em>deep</em> in the library).</p>
<p>Warms hopes to make money on the site from advertising, including focusing on attracting brands that want to be in front of apps consumers.</p>

<p>I also love pie (click on this very funny pie chart from <a href="http://graphjam.com/">GraphJam</a> once to make it larger and on &#8220;next&#8221; to see other graphs in a slideshow.)</p>
<p>Thus, here are a few&#8211;click on the images to make them larger&#8211;comparing some stats about development for the iPhone from Apple (AAPL) and the Android from Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>They are from Flurry Analytics, a mobile analytics and monetization tools start-up in San Francisco, from a blog post titled <a href="http://blog.flurry.com/bid/24465/Smartphone-Industry-Pulse-July-2009">&#8220;Smartphone Industry Pulse, July 2009.&#8221;</a> </p>
<p>The first chart shows new project starts&#8211;apps in the pipeline from third-party developers&#8211;for the iPhone, and the second is for Android.</p>
<p>Both starts are up a lot, as you can see, although the iPhone wins in terms of sheer numbers. At this rate, said Flurry, &#8220;by the end of 2009, the App Store will easily surpass 100,000 apps.&#8221;</p>

<p>BoomTown is certainly going to be one of the many-so-many who immediately fork over whatever it takes to get my mitts on the upcoming tablet device from Apple.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s why, according to a new report from Piper Jaffray Senior Research Analyst Gene Munster&#8211;who is monk-like in his devotion to writing down every scrap of information he can scrape up about whatever Apple HQ in Cupertino, Calif., deigns to release&#8211;it&#8217;s going to be raining money down on the company, just like manna from heaven.</p>
<p>That would be $1.2 billion in revenue in calendar year 2010, after he estimated that Apple (AAPL) will sell two million units at a price of $600.</p>
<p>&#8220;While at first glance this may appear to address a niche market, we believe the addressable market is larger than that of the Apple TV, of which Apple sold about 1.2m in its first year,&#8221; wrote Munster.</p>
<p>He apparently spoke to some leaky Asian component suppliers, who have received orders from Apple, to be &#8220;fulfilled by late CY09.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster, who also provided the mock-up image of the Jesus Tablet seen above (it will take its place next to the Jesus Phone and Jesus Pod), wrote that the device was pretty much a larger iPod touch. </p>
<p>It will run all the usual apps and have some extra ones, specially designed for the big screen, he predicted.</p>
<p>It will also be Web-connected and, of course, is a touchscreen and play all kinds of media, like music, games and video.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t call it a netbook! </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe an Apple tablet would be priced 30%-50% below the $999 MacBook, and would offer best in class web, email, and media software,&#8221; wrote Munster. &#8220;In other words, we believe Apple&#8217;s tablet would compete well in the netbook category even though it would not be a netbook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also, there will be a 3G modem&#8211;personally, we all pray Apple picks Verizon (VZ) and not AT&#038;T (T) to be the mobile provider&#8211;with a possible subsidy on the sale of the device.</p>
<p>The hype around the new and doubtlessly innovative Apple product&#8211;my vote for a name is that it will be called iTablet&#8211;is likely to grow into the fall, especially if it is introduced by the miraculously on-the-mend CEO Steve Jobs. </p>
<p>Apple fanboys: Can you say <em>Hallelujah</em>?</p>

<p>In its blog post, titled &#8220;Xoopit + Yahoo! Mail = Moving beyond that massive digital shoebox,&#8221; Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of Application Products Bryan Lamkin wrote, in part:</p>

You&#8217;ll be able to share your pictures among a group of friends or family like never before&#8211;combining pictures from numerous sources into a single album for a private group to view. And soon your inbox will become an organized photo index as well. Just imagine having a tool that collects all the photos you&#8217;ve sent and received over the years into that scrapbook you&#8217;ve never had time to assemble.</p>
<p>In short, Xoopit will bring phenomenal photo organization, improved photo sharing, and the serendipity of discovering forgotten photos to Yahoo! Mail.</p>
<p>Why is this such a big deal? Yahoo! Mail is actually home to one of the largest online photo repositories in the world. And every day, millions of you use Yahoo! Mail as your primary way to share the photos of important moments in your lives. While social networks and community sites are great for sharing photos with everyone you know, we realize it&#8217;s not for everyone or every occasion. For many, email is still best for sharing photos among a more select group of friends or family. And now we&#8217;re making it all that much easier for you.</p></blockquote>
<p>Xoopit finds photos, videos, links and other files in email so that users can surface and then share them on many sites, such as social networking giant Facebook. It also has other products that essentially enliven email.</p>
<p>Xoopit&#8217;s investors&#8211;Accel Partners and Foundation Capital, along with several angel investors&#8211;have pumped about $6.5 million into the company since 2006.</p>
<p>As I previously reported, sources said Yahoo was first impressed with its innovative plug-in that works with Gmail from Google (GOOG), and has been looking at the company for a while, previously offering about $10 million for it.</p>
<p>Xoopit also makes a similar photo-sharing application for Yahoo Mail, which it <a href="http://www.xoopit.com/press/20081215-photos-by-xoopit-for-yahoo-mail">launched late last year</a>.</p>
<p>The opening up of its popular email product to a variety of third-party applications in order to make it more robust has been a goal of Yahoo recently as it seeks to socialize one of its most popular products.</p>
<p>Interestingly, in the Yahoo blog, Lamkin said Xoopit was Yahoo Mail&#8217;s most popular third-party app.</p>

The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page--one of the most trafficked on the Web--is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street.

<p>Although it&#8217;s not news that Yahoo has been readying a new version of its homepage and has spent a lot of time doing so&#8211;in fact, it&#8217;s gone all Handy Manny with a whole lot of test renovations&#8211;the Internet giant begins the massive rollout of it tomorrow.</p>
<p>The official launch of what was code-named &#8220;Metro,&#8221; which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090214/how-is-yahoos-massive-metro-homepage-redesign-going-it-depends-on-who-you-ask/">Yahoo had previously said was coming in the fall</a>, will take place on an opt-in &#8220;beta&#8221; basis for the hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. and will be extended to France, the U.K. and India later this week.</p>
<p>When users log in, they will get a choice&#8211;for now, there will be no forcing it&#8211;to switch over to the new version, which Yahoo&#8217;s Tapan Bhat, SVP of Integrated Consumer Experiences, said in an interview with me today by phone, is the &#8220;the most fundamental change to the homepage ever.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, the new look is much different, even than previous launch candidates, featuring an almost complete rejiggering of the look and feel of the most important page at Yahoo (YHOO) and one of the most trafficked on the Internet.</p>
<p>The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street. Its homepage gets 330 million unique visitors every month.</p>
<p>Yahoo has redone its homepage many times since its founding in the mid-1990s (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">see the various incarnations of it here</a>), but this new design is perhaps the most dramatic.</p>

<p>The most striking change is a prominent left-side &#8220;My Favorites&#8221; area, with 65 specially designed applications that users can customize, including giving a quick hovering glimpse of email, stocks and of third-party sites like Facebook.</p>
<p>Not quite a dashboard or exactly a social networking page, it feels a little as if Yahoo took a browser tab or a toolbar, put it in a vertical format and gave it some great functionality. </p>
<p>Full disclosure: <strong>All Things Digital</strong>, as well as several other Dow Jones news properties, are in its special alphabetical apps gallery, although I had no idea it would be there.</p>

<p>Yahoo also allows users to create such widgets on the fly from most any Web site and they can have up to 36 apps on the homepage.</p>
<p>There is advertising in the boxes that pop up when hovering over these apps, which is a way of dealing with the issue of purposely sending users away from Yahoo rather than keeping them there. It is a much better version of that trap.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be the center of people&#8217;s lives online and want to do it in an open, innovative way, all while providing a compelling experience,&#8221; said Bhat. &#8220;It marks the beginning of a renaissance of Yahoo, a renaissance where every pixel matters.&#8221;</p>

<p>After looking over the history of Yahoo&#8217;s homepages since 1994 <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">(see them all here)</a>, it has pretty much told a story of a site with increasingly smaller font sizes and more stuff packed on it.</p>
<p>&#8220;It had nothing to do with the user, but what Yahoo wanted the user to do,&#8221; said Bhat, rather frankly.</p>
<p>Thus, he said, everything going forward will focus on what the user wants, which, he explained, essentially boils down to a &#8220;my world&#8221; and &#8220;the world&#8221; outlook.</p>
<p>In the my-world bucket: Email, favorite Web sites, stock info. In the the-world: General news, search, what&#8217;s hot.</p>
<p>But, unlike its highly customized MyYahoo product, Bhat said that Yahoo wanted to make it easier for users to create a page where &#8220;there is destination for everything you are about in just a click or two.&#8221;</p>
<p>The programmed &#8220;Today&#8221; module remains, although users can indicate which kind of information&#8211;finance, news, entertainment&#8211;gets top billing.</p>
<p>The module is also localized, depending on the user.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to provide broadcast and narrowcast in one place,&#8221; said Bhat.</p>
<p>That includes updating status, right from the homepage, including integration with social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.</p>
<p>But&#8211;in a very big mistake&#8211;there is no ability to update status to the popular microblogging service Twitter on this part of the homepage, as yet. You can make it an app, though, as Twitter can appear in your Yahoo updates.</p>
<p>And there is a big advertising module still on the right, along with a what&#8217;s-hot section. And, finally, there will also soon be complete two-way syncing with mobile devices, said Bhat. </p>
<p>Interestingly, although CEO Carol Bartz has often said internally that she does not like the color purple, which has been the company&#8217;s signature one since its founding, the main page keeps up the violet tradition with a lighter tone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s color is purple and it is known for that,&#8221; said Bhat (deftly not taking my delicious bait).</p>
<p>As to why it has taken so long to get its front page redone&#8211;it was originally set to debut late last year&#8211;Bhat noted that such a major shift of such a trafficked page was, <em>well</em>, complex.</p>
<p>&#8220;It involves bringing users along and also rewiring everything within Yahoo,&#8221; said Bhat, who gave Bartz credit for turbocharging the effort, since she first arrived at the troubled Silicon Valley icon in January and quickly put the brakes on the planned launch. &#8220;Now, we are looking at Yahoo holistically, all centered around the user.&#8221;</p>
<p>Time will tell if it is a success, but it is certainly a good and even innovative effort, in much the same spirit Microsoft (MSFT) has had with its new Bing search offering.</p>
<p>And while some might complain that it is not cutting-edge enough, it seems just the right amount of rejiggering and open feel for the mass of users it serves.</p>
<p>For Yahoo, at least when it comes to this one, change is indeed good.</p>

<p>As President and CEO of Nokia, <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/speakers/olli-pekka-kallasvuo/">Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo</a> runs the world’s largest mobile phone maker (with roughly 36 percent share) and one of the few top tech companies in Europe. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a hard-won and enviable position, but a tough one to maintain, especially in a souring economy. And that is even more of an issue for Nokia (NOK) now, with new rivals like Apple (AAPL) emerging in the sector the company has long dominated.</p>
<p>Both Apple and Research in Motion (RIMM) gained market share at the company’s expense in the first quarter, with innovative touchscreens and apps, features that Nokia has been late to the smartphone party with.</p>

<p>Does the tech march ever slow down? </p>
<p>Not this week it doesn&#8217;t! And Digital Daily&#8217;s live-blogger de tutti live-bloggers <a href="http://www.digitaldaily.com">John Paczkowski</a> will be there to cover every move.</p>
<p>Today, in case you haven&#8217;t heard, is the big annual Apple (AAPL) event: The <a href="http://developer.apple.com/WWDC/">Worldwide Developers Conference</a> in San Francisco.</p>
<p>The keynote at the Moscone Center kicks off at 10 AM PDT with Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, along with other Apple execs. They will be presenting to 1,000 developers, at what is now the only major products event for the iconic and innovative Silicon Valley company.</p>
<p>A passel of press, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/wwdc-2009-keynote-live/">as well as John</a>, will also be there, along with our Web guru (and closet Apple expert) Adam Tow. They&#8217;ll be liveblogging and posting photos to the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> site throughout the event.</p>
<p>It&#8217;ll be a lot of iPhone news, according to reports, with possibly an upgraded device and all sorts of new features and software.</p>
<p>But, unless it is their lucky day, Apple fanboys likely to have to wait a little bit longer for the return of Apple&#8217;s leader Steve Jobs, presumably astride a steed bearing a giant tablet iPod Touch.</p>
<p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124415751596986965.html">According to The Wall Street Journal</a> last week&#8211;whose report is <em>finally, finally, finally</em> the most solid, thus far&#8211;Jobs is set to return soon to the helm of Apple after a six-month sick leave.</p>
<p>And that means <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090106/to-err-is-human-to-live-divine-how-exactly-no-one-got-it-right-about-steve-jobs-health/">reports of Jobs&#8217; imminent demise early this year were, as it turned out, quite premature</a>.</p>
<p>Which makes it laughable that those who trumpeted someone&#8217;s allegedly fatal illness without even close to adequate sourcing are now&#8211;as the specifics of their clear overreaching have faded&#8211;they were sort-of right, since, you know, he <em>was</em> sick. </p>
<p>But let me review what was reported then, using a single source: Jobs was “declining rapidly” and “it may be even worse than we imagined” and, quoting the source directly: “Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs. letting the hype destroy Apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.”</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/jobsd.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/jobsd-250x166.jpg" alt="jobsd" title="jobsd" width="250" height="166" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-14271" /></a></p>
<p>Oops, it is June now and Jobs appears to be on the mend, it did not turn out to be worse, even if he was quite sick, and spring has passed without the &#8220;inevitable&#8221; happening. Close is only right in horse shoes, especially in this case. </p>
<p>Who knows what tomorrow will bring. I certainly don&#8217;t, but neither does anyone else, which is why&#8211;unless you&#8217;re looking at Jobs&#8217; medical reports or hearing from someone who has seen them&#8211;it&#8217;s pretty much an impossible story to get right either way. </p>
<p>So, no matter how much they try to defend themselves in a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/07/business/media/07ping.html">recent piece in the New York Times</a> (which was silly enough in its toothless blogger-bashing)&#8211;claiming it is fine and dandy to insinuate that someone is at death&#8217;s door without, you know, knowing for sure if it were <em>true</em>&#8211;it&#8217;s just lame all around.</p>
<p>But, lamer still was the climbing-onto-a-very-high-and-precarious-horse reaction to that dopey Times article, by giving these dog-ate-my-homework reporting lapses the even sillier moniker of &#8220;process&#8221; journalism.</p>
<p>I confess I am utterly flummoxed by this term, because it seems to boil down to: </p>
<p><em>We have a firm commitment to report it wrong until we, um, get it right or someone, anyone, please hurry, corrects us&#8211;not that we&#8217;ll ever admit an error, just like mainstream media!</em></p>
<p>Actually, it sounds more like processed cheese journalism&#8211;completely without nutrition and eventually bad for readers&#8217; health. But eat up and get obese on it, because it&#8217;s free and cheap and even tasty at times!</p>
<p>But, I digress.</p>
<p>After all the Apple news is chewed and re-chewed up by one and all, Google (GOOG) will be holding an app event tomorrow, also in San Francisco.</p>

<p>BoomTown is not proud of the problem.</p>
<p>Not at all. </p>
<p>But, after hearing the same situation described over and over again from many other parents like me, I am also not alone.</p>
<p>As it turns out, our almost-seven-year-old son, Louie, has morphed into an iJacker.</p>
<p>That would be of <em>my</em> iPhone, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090105/goodbye-blackberry-and-hello-ifart-app">I switched solely to recently</a> after a longtime attachment to my BlackBerry.</p>
<p>That RIM (RIMM) mobile phone never turned into a CrackBerry for him, as Louie did not care much for its lovely keys for emailing that so captivated me.</p>
<p>But now he wants to grab my iPhone from my holster all the time, having become entranced by apps&#8211;lots and lots and lots of apps&#8211;that now litter the digital pages of my Apple (AAPL) device.</p>
<p>DizzyBeeFree and Super Monkey Ball. Touch Hockey and Paper Football. Finger Sprint and MoodPhone. Bounce On and Crazy Penguin Catapult. Lie Detector and Crazy Snowboard. Tic Tac Toe and Hangman. And iChess, iCheckers, iBowl.</p>
<p>Of course, there are also the bubble poppers and light sabers and more cowbells. </p>
<p><em>And, good lord, how did a &#8220;Race to Witch Mountain&#8221; app get on there?</em></p>
<p>So, I don&#8217;t need any stats to tell me that the iPhone, and the iPod touch too, have turned into gaming devices of great impact. </p>
<p>But there are stats, like yesterday&#8217;s from comScore (SCOR), showing that 12 out of the top 25 all-time iPhone apps are games. (See the chart below; click to make it larger.)</p>

<p>It&#8217;s easy to understand why. The ease of use, the small form factor, the great graphics in this mobile phone that is actually a powerful computer.</p>
<p>In fact, Louie hardly has any interest in the desktop computer anymore, or even a laptop. Although we limited his access to it, it&#8217;s moot, since he hardly ever uses it now that the iPhone is around. </p>
<p>Why? It is clear, most of all, that Louie loves the movement and the touch features, which turn the experience into a visceral one.</p>
<p>And, uh-oh&#8211;according to a <a href="http://iphonetouch.blorge.com/2009/04/03/apple-patents-iphone-movement-vibration-and-pleasure/">post last week on the blog Blorge.com</a>, &#8220;The industry patent watch reveals that Apple has filed patent applications that seek to patent certain user interface ideas for the iPhone, including the use of movement, vibration, and pleasure.&#8221;</p>
<p>Oh, this is not going to go well when Louie is a teenager.</p>
<p>Thus, aside from switching to a Microsoft (MSFT) Zune, what are our parenting tactics to stave off that day from coming sooner?</p>
<p>Well, obviously, as much as he might beg&#8211;and he does beg and wheedle and plead&#8211;Louie gets to use the iPhone sparingly, on short car trips mostly. </p>
<p>And he has to play not only the sillier games, but use ones like iChess or word games that require some brain power.</p>
<p>Lastly, Louie must be analog more than digital and playing inside and outside more than any of it.</p>
<p>There should be more rules, I know, but for now he seems just as riveted to baseball and kickball too, so I am not quite in the panic stage.</p>
<p>More the do-not-leave-the-iPhone-on-the-counter-if-I-ever-hope-to-see-it-again phase.</p>
<p>Louie&#8217;s almost-four-year-old brother, Alex, is less interested in games on the iPhone, as it turns out.</p>

<p>Instead, for him, the iPhone is a magical music video device on which I bring him old musical numbers.</p>
<p>Last night, it was &#8220;I Like to Be in America&#8221; from &#8220;West Side Story&#8221; and the night before, &#8220;Oh, What a Beautiful Morning&#8221; from &#8220;Oklahoma!&#8221;</p>
<p>He was as delighted and mesmerized, as I was when I first saw those classics on the television when I was a kid. </p>
<p>And, even seeing them on an iPhone, of that, I <em>am</em> proud.</p>
<p>But, to give you the full picture of the situation, here is a video interview I did of Louie in action with my hijacked iPhone (it is not pretty):</p>
