<p>It&#8217;s well known that Google doesn&#8217;t do much in the way of marketing around its search service.</p>
<p>While you will catch advertising for the Chrome browser or for Android smartphones on the Web, given Google&#8217;s huge 70 percent market share in search, it hardly needs to attract users.</p>
<p>So, then, what is one to make of a series of new videos, which look suspiciously like commercials, that Google (GOOG) launched late last week on its blog and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/searchstories">posted on a new channel on YouTube</a>?</p>
<p>Called &#8220;Search Stories,&#8221; there are a half-dozen of the short videos, some more adorkable than others, which star the main search box.</p>
<p>One thing they have in common is that they have the look and feel of a marketing campaign, with the tag line &#8220;Search on.&#8221;</p>
<p>They also stress a variety of Google products, such as mapping, video, price comparisons, email and more.</p>
<p>One imagines what pre-Batman Bruce Wayne would look for, complete with ominous music, including search terms such as &#8220;coping with loss,&#8221; &#8220;flexible kevlar&#8221; and &#8220;gotham city crime statistics.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another video, called &#8220;Newbie,&#8221; has a grandmother searching on &#8220;keeping in touch with grandkids&#8221; and&#8211;in a clever dig at the MySpace and Facebook social networking services&#8211;&#8220;what is myfacebook,&#8221; which gets corrected by Google to &#8220;what is facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Could it be that the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/beware-google-bing-is-going-to-suck-your-blood-um-market-share-the-new-commercial">$100 million marketing push</a> Microsoft (MSFT) launched for its Bing search service, which seems to be <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091116/comscore’s-october-2009-search-data-google-and-microsoft-up-yahoo-down/">slowly gaining share</a>, is starting to get on the nerves of those Spocks in Silicon Valley?</p>
<p>Not that Google would admit this, instead simply saying it was feeling all warm and fuzzy and so decided to make some kids-let&#8217;s-put-on-a-show videos.</p>
<p>Wrote <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/cool-even-batman-uses-google.html">Robert Wong of Google Creative Lab</a> in a blog post, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Because while we&#8217;re proud of the innovations we&#8217;re making in search, we&#8217;re proudest of the things people use search to accomplish. In other words, the best search results don&#8217;t show up on a webpage&#8211;they show up in somebody&#8217;s life.</p>
<p>So in that spirit, we made a bunch of videos. There&#8217;s one about grandma dipping her toe into technology. One about friends taking a Kerouac inspired road trip. And yes, there&#8217;s even one about Bruce Wayne.</p></blockquote>

<p>Thus, no &#8220;special Signature Edition of Windows® 7 Ultimate and your very own Windows® 7 Party Pack to share with your guests&#8221; for a shindig at my house!</p>
<p>As you might imagine: Massive, massive bummer.</p>
<p>While Microsoft (MSFT) PR head Frank Shaw begrudgingly invited me to his party, flying to Seattle for it seemed like too much fun to have in one lifetime.</p>
<p>So, because we admire the very gumption of Microsoft marketing types for trying to make a software launch festive, which many have mocked mercilessly, the Swisher boys and I pressed on and created our own party to mark the launch of the much anticipated new operating system software.</p>
<p>With Windows 7 officially in stores on Oct. 22, the software giant hopes its new offering will erase all memories of Vista. And so far, reviews, <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20091007/a-windows-to-help-you-forget/">such as Walt Mossberg&#8217;s here</a>, are pretty good.</p>
<p>After a rocky start, including disinviting all the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> staff from the proceedings for reasons you will see in the video, Louie, Alex and I proceeded to party down. </p>
<p>The festivities included Pin-the-Moustache-on-Steve-Ballmer, Bobbing for Apple (AAPL) and, of course, a very exhausting game of &#8220;Search&#8221;&#8211;also know as Hide-and-Seek&#8211;for the Google (GOOG) PC. </p>
<p>All in all, a memorable evening at the Swisher household, as you can see in the video below:</p>

The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page--one of the most trafficked on the Web--is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street.

<p>Although it&#8217;s not news that Yahoo has been readying a new version of its homepage and has spent a lot of time doing so&#8211;in fact, it&#8217;s gone all Handy Manny with a whole lot of test renovations&#8211;the Internet giant begins the massive rollout of it tomorrow.</p>

<p>When users log in, they will get a choice&#8211;for now, there will be no forcing it&#8211;to switch over to the new version, which Yahoo&#8217;s Tapan Bhat, SVP of Integrated Consumer Experiences, said in an interview with me today by phone, is the &#8220;the most fundamental change to the homepage ever.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, the new look is much different, even than previous launch candidates, featuring an almost complete rejiggering of the look and feel of the most important page at Yahoo (YHOO) and one of the most trafficked on the Internet.</p>
<p>The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street. Its homepage gets 330 million unique visitors every month.</p>
<p>Yahoo has redone its homepage many times since its founding in the mid-1990s (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">see the various incarnations of it here</a>), but this new design is perhaps the most dramatic.</p>

<p>The most striking change is a prominent left-side &#8220;My Favorites&#8221; area, with 65 specially designed applications that users can customize, including giving a quick hovering glimpse of email, stocks and of third-party sites like Facebook.</p>
<p>Not quite a dashboard or exactly a social networking page, it feels a little as if Yahoo took a browser tab or a toolbar, put it in a vertical format and gave it some great functionality. </p>
<p>Full disclosure: <strong>All Things Digital</strong>, as well as several other Dow Jones news properties, are in its special alphabetical apps gallery, although I had no idea it would be there.</p>

<p>Yahoo also allows users to create such widgets on the fly from most any Web site and they can have up to 36 apps on the homepage.</p>
<p>There is advertising in the boxes that pop up when hovering over these apps, which is a way of dealing with the issue of purposely sending users away from Yahoo rather than keeping them there. It is a much better version of that trap.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be the center of people&#8217;s lives online and want to do it in an open, innovative way, all while providing a compelling experience,&#8221; said Bhat. &#8220;It marks the beginning of a renaissance of Yahoo, a renaissance where every pixel matters.&#8221;</p>

<p>After looking over the history of Yahoo&#8217;s homepages since 1994 <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">(see them all here)</a>, it has pretty much told a story of a site with increasingly smaller font sizes and more stuff packed on it.</p>
<p>&#8220;It had nothing to do with the user, but what Yahoo wanted the user to do,&#8221; said Bhat, rather frankly.</p>
<p>Thus, he said, everything going forward will focus on what the user wants, which, he explained, essentially boils down to a &#8220;my world&#8221; and &#8220;the world&#8221; outlook.</p>
<p>In the my-world bucket: Email, favorite Web sites, stock info. In the the-world: General news, search, what&#8217;s hot.</p>
<p>But, unlike its highly customized MyYahoo product, Bhat said that Yahoo wanted to make it easier for users to create a page where &#8220;there is destination for everything you are about in just a click or two.&#8221;</p>
<p>The programmed &#8220;Today&#8221; module remains, although users can indicate which kind of information&#8211;finance, news, entertainment&#8211;gets top billing.</p>
<p>The module is also localized, depending on the user.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to provide broadcast and narrowcast in one place,&#8221; said Bhat.</p>
<p>That includes updating status, right from the homepage, including integration with social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.</p>
<p>But&#8211;in a very big mistake&#8211;there is no ability to update status to the popular microblogging service Twitter on this part of the homepage, as yet. You can make it an app, though, as Twitter can appear in your Yahoo updates.</p>
<p>And there is a big advertising module still on the right, along with a what&#8217;s-hot section. And, finally, there will also soon be complete two-way syncing with mobile devices, said Bhat. </p>
<p>Interestingly, although CEO Carol Bartz has often said internally that she does not like the color purple, which has been the company&#8217;s signature one since its founding, the main page keeps up the violet tradition with a lighter tone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s color is purple and it is known for that,&#8221; said Bhat (deftly not taking my delicious bait).</p>
<p>As to why it has taken so long to get its front page redone&#8211;it was originally set to debut late last year&#8211;Bhat noted that such a major shift of such a trafficked page was, <em>well</em>, complex.</p>
<p>&#8220;It involves bringing users along and also rewiring everything within Yahoo,&#8221; said Bhat, who gave Bartz credit for turbocharging the effort, since she first arrived at the troubled Silicon Valley icon in January and quickly put the brakes on the planned launch. &#8220;Now, we are looking at Yahoo holistically, all centered around the user.&#8221;</p>
<p>Time will tell if it is a success, but it is certainly a good and even innovative effort, in much the same spirit Microsoft (MSFT) has had with its new Bing search offering.</p>
<p>And while some might complain that it is not cutting-edge enough, it seems just the right amount of rejiggering and open feel for the mass of users it serves.</p>
<p>For Yahoo, at least when it comes to this one, change is indeed good.</p>

<p>As CEO and chairman of Mozilla, respectively, <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/speakers/john-lilly/">John Lilly</a> and <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/speakers/mitchell-baker/">Mitchell Baker</a> have overseen the huge growth of Firefox, the innovative open-source browser.</p>
<p>With almost 23 percent of the Web browser market in recent surveys, it is the second most popular of such software globally, after Microsoft (MSFT) Internet Explorer, which holds just over 66 percent.</p>
<p>But there other competitors too, including Apple (AAPL) and now Mozilla partner Google (GOOG), which is bearing down upon it with its latest “don’t-be-evil” browser bulldozer, Chrome.</p>

<p>Even in the midst of a tough investing environment, Silicon Valley legend and serial entrepreneur Marc Andreessen (pictured here) and his longtime investing partner, Ben Horowitz, have completed the raising of a new venture fund, according to numerous sources close to the situation, and it is oversubscribed.</p>
<p>Sources said the fund&#8211;which was nicknamed &#8220;Project A&#8221; but is actually called Andreessen Horowitz&#8211;will be $300 million. It is $50 million over the $250 million he and Horowitz had planned.</p>
<p>Several major institutional investors&#8211;from universities, for example&#8211;have invested large chunks of up to $20 million or more, while a spate of Silicon Valley luminaries has put in amounts of $1 million or less.</p>
<p>The quick completion of the fund raising, in the midst of a national econalypse, is a good sign perhaps for the forward-leaning culture of tech, which has seen some pullback by VCs over the last six months. </p>
<p>Andreessen, who co-founded Netscape&#8211;the iconic browser company that was key to introducing the modern Internet to consumers&#8211;and a lot of other start-ups, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/marc-andreessens-new-venture-fund-project-a">announced on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; television show in February</a> that he was creating the new fund.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the first time in my life, I am crossing over into the dark side,” said Andreessen at the time (see the video below).</p>
<p><span id="more-14464"></span></p>
<p>Although he gave few specific details about the fund in that interview, Andreessen essentially said he was simply putting a structure around his own active angel investing, which has included start-ups like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, LinkedIn and many more.</p>
<p>Andreessen, who is on the board of Facebook and an adviser to Twitter, has turned into one the the digital sector&#8217;s most influential mandarins for innovative start-ups.</p>
<p>His new effort will focus on early-stage investments, he said in the interview with Rose, noting that “our claim to fame is, we’ve actually, you know, by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, we’ve done it, we’ve been on that side of the table for a long time; we know what it’s like.”</p>
<p>Andreessen said then that he and Horowitz had made 36 investments over the last three years of up to $200,000, but that his new firm will make up to $1 million bets on companies they decide to invest in.</p>
<p>Plus, he said then he would be patient: “Like with our new fund, if we fund a company today, we’re thinking about a return in seven to 10 years, so we can go through three or four or even five years of economic downturn, as long as, at some point, we come out the other end.”</p>

<p>The new round includes Kleiner Perkins, Cooliris&#8217;s initial investor, as well as DAG Ventures, the Westly Group and T-Mobile&#8217;s T-Ventures.</p>
<p>Cooliris had already received $3 million two years ago from Kleiner.</p>
<p>The Palo Alto, Calif.-based start-up is also releasing the latest upgrade to its 3-D &#8220;wall&#8221; software out of beta, which adds more online content from around the Web, including from social-networking sites like Facebook and from a user&#8217;s own hard drive.</p>
<p>The trend toward making the Web browser look like a television screen and navigating information more visually is increasing all over the Internet, from video services like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090112/boxee-webtv-that-makes-sense-is-that-good-or-bad-for-big-cable/">Boxee</a> to visually-oriented search services like <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080311/searchme-a-new-visual-search-engine">Searchme</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to allow users to discover, navigate and consume more of the Web in the same amount of time, using visual means, than people do now through text links,&#8221; said Austin Shoemaker, Cooliris co-founder and CTO in an interview last week with BoomTown.</p>
<p>Launched last year with a plug-in called PicLens, Cooliris said that its software had been downloaded 10 million times and that it has three million active daily users. It also has a popular iPhone version of its software.</p>

<p>Back in the heyday, Peter Currie was the money man to see in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>As CFO of Netscape Communications, he led the start-up into history, as the first great Internet rocket ship, when it went public on Aug. 9, 1995. </p>
<p>With the first consumer-friendly browser software, which made the Web easily understandable to the masses, Netscape was at the red-hot center of the nascent digital revolution.</p>
<p>&#8220;Wall Street went bonkers,&#8221; said one news reporter about the IPO, and the craziness did not stop for quite a while. </p>
<p>Rising to insane levels, the stock was ground zero of the Internet gold rush too, despite the fact that it had no profits to speak of. </p>
<p>But it did have a 23-year-old co-founder and tech wunderkind in Marc Andreessen, and a growth trajectory that was astounding.</p>
<p>If you think it sounds somewhat similar to Facebook today&#8211;where <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/former-netscape-cfo-peter-currie-will-be-new-facebook-financial-adviser-until-new-cfo-is-found/">Currie will now help out as temporary financial adviser</a> after the social-networking site <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially/">parted ways with its CFO, Gideon Yu, yesterday, following mutual disagreements</a> and announced a search for a replacement&#8211;you are correct.</p>
<p>In that job, the 53-year-old Currie will be helping Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, 24, navigate&#8211;albeit temporarily&#8211;through some stormy economics seas on a journey that will hopefully end in an initial public offering.</p>
<p>The search for a new CFO will also involve Currie, obviously, and will be conducted by Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>But until a new CFO is in place, Facebook&#8217;s quest still entails sorting out a substantive advertising monetization strategy while also keeping up its speedy growth rates and managing the high costs that mount with its popularity.</p>
<p>That certainly was Netscape&#8217;s major challenge, which it never met successfully and which was made worse by intense attacks from Microsoft (MSFT) on Netscape&#8217;s core browser business.</p>
<p>That eventually led to the antitrust trial against the software giant, even as Netscape saw its star fall dramatically.</p>
<p>It was sold to AOL in 1998 for $4 billion, a shadow of its bubble valuation, and is <a href="http://netscape.aol.com/">now more of a footnote</a> than an ongoing tech product (although the now-popular Mozilla browser is a direct descendant of Netscape).</p>
<p>In fact, in 2008, Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL dropped its support for the Netscape browser and said it was no longer releasing new versions.</p>
<p>Still, a lot of former Netscape execs now hold other key jobs in the Web space.</p>
<p>Its investor relations exec, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080718/sure-the-cbs-cnet-deal-seems-crazy-but-maybe-in-a-good-way/">Quincy Smith</a>, now heads up the digital arm of CBS (CBS), for example.</p>
<p>And Andreessen has started a number of companies and has transformed himself into an kind of elder statesman of Silicon Valley of late, as well as a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/marc-andreessens-new-venture-fund-project-a">newly minted venture investor</a>.</p>

<p>Andreessen, many sources said, was a shadow influence on Zuckerberg&#8217;s decisions related to Yu, with whom relations had gotten tense, and to bring in Currie (pictured here).</p>
<p>Currie is certainly a great choice, in terms of the close-knit tech sector&#8217;s respect and experience.</p>
<p>Currie is also unusually tall, aggressively avuncular and laid-back, loves Elvis and enjoys pranking reporters like BoomTown. (Case in point: He once tried to spread the rumor that I am short due to a medical condition.)</p>
<p>Now the president of Currie Capital, a private investment firm, he had previously worked at General Atlantic in private equity.</p>
<p>After Netscape, he was a partner and co-founder of the Barksdale Group, an early-stage venture capital firm.</p>
<p>Before Netscape, he was CFO of McCaw Cellular Communications and also worked at Morgan Stanley (MS).</p>
<p>Currie is also board-happy, serving as a director of a variety of tech firms, private and public. They have included CNET Networks, Critical Path, Clearwire (CLWR), Safeco, Ofoto, Tellme Networks and Zantaz, as well as Sun Microsystems (JAVA). </p>
<p>He has an MBA from Stanford University and went to Williams College.</p>

<p>With all the information Microsoft is releasing at its launchtastic <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081024/whats-up-at-microsofts-professional-developers-conference-hint-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-amazon-pain/">Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles this week</a>, CEO Steve Ballmer sent out a honking long missive to customers who have opted into the software giant&#8217;s &#8220;Executive Email&#8221; program (who knew?).</p>
<p>Along with the Azure&#8211;finally, a lovely and apt brand name from Microsoft&#8211;cloud services offering, it also outlines the inevitable and unavoidable path for the company, which has long struggled in getting its digital strategy right.</p>
<p>That includes cloudy browser versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other of its powerhouse software products. </p>
<p>Of course, as with any Microsoft (MSFT) exec you talk to, software is still the plodding workhorse of this airy new cloud world, part of its &#8220;software plus services&#8221; mantra that the company dearly hopes will stave off the inevitable end of its mainstay business.</p>
<p>Ignore the top about transformation Tourette&#8217;s blah-blah-blah at the start to get to the money quote: </p>
<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s missing is the ability to connect these components in a seamless continuum of information, communication, and computing that isn&#8217;t bounded by device or location. Today, some things that our intuition says should be simple still remain difficult, if not impossible.&#8221;</p>
<p>Ballmer does sound good here, although&#8211;as the cliché goes&#8211;the proof&#8217;s in the pudding.</p>
<p>(And who doesn&#8217;t love a good cup of pudding?)</p>

<p>During the past decade, a dramatic transformation in the world of information technology has been taking shape. It&#8217;s a transformation that will change the way we experience the world and share our experiences with others. It&#8217;s a transformation in which the barriers between technologies will fall away so we can connect to people and information no matter where we are. It&#8217;s a transformation where new innovations will shorten the path from inspiration to accomplishment.</p>
<p>Many of the components of this transformation are already in place. Some have received a great deal of attention. &#8220;Cloud computing&#8221; that connects people to vast amounts of storage and computing power in massive datacenters is one example. Social networking sites that have changed the way people connect with family and friends is another.</p>
<p>Other components are so much a part of the inevitable march of progress that we take them for granted as soon as we start to use them: cell phones that double as digital cameras, large flat-screen PC monitors and HD TV screens, and hands-free digital car entertainment and navigation systems, to name just a few.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s missing is the ability to connect these components in a seamless continuum of information, communication, and computing that isn&#8217;t bounded by device or location. Today, some things that our intuition says should be simple still remain difficult, if not impossible. Why can&#8217;t we easily access the documents we create at work on our home PCs? Why isn&#8217;t all of the information that customers share with us available instantly in a single application? Why can&#8217;t we create calendars that automatically merge our schedules at work and home?</p>
<p>This week at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles, we shared news with software developers about a new set of platform technologies that will help transcend these limits. Because you are a subscriber to Executive Emails from Microsoft, I wanted to share my thoughts about the impact that these technologies will have as developers begin to use them to create a new generation of experiences that extend uninterrupted from the desktop to the mobile phone, media player, car, and beyond-to places where we never thought information and communications would be available to us.</p>
<p>A NEW PLATFORM FOR CLOUD COMPUTING</p>
<p>At PDC, we announced the availability of an early preview release of a new technology called Windows Azure. Windows Azure will enable developers to build applications that extend from the cloud to the enterprise datacenter and span the PC, the Web, and the mobile phone. For the first time, we shared pre-beta code for Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows 7, which is the next version of the Windows desktop operating system, will take advantage of software and hardware advances to help eliminate the boundaries between information, people, and devices.</p>
<p>We also previewed Office Web applications, which are light-weight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote that are designed to be accessed through a browser. Office Web applications will be part of the next version of Office and will enable people to view, edit, and share information and collaborate on documents on the desktop, the phone, and in a Web browser in a way that is consistent and familiar.</p>
<p>Windows Azure is part of the Azure Services Platform, a comprehensive set of storage, computing, and networking infrastructure services that reside in Microsoft&#8217;s network of datacenters. Using the Azure Services Platform, developers will be able to build applications that run in the cloud and extend existing applications to take advantage of cloud-based capabilities. The Azure Services Platform provides the foundation for business and consumer applications that deliver a consistent way for people to store and share information easily and securely in the cloud, and access it on any device from any location.</p>
<p>Windows Azure is not software that companies will run on their own servers. It&#8217;s something new: a service that runs in Microsoft’s growing network of datacenters and provides the platform that helps companies respond to the realities of today’s business environment, and tomorrow’s. Windows Azure technologies are already finding their way into products such as Windows Server 2008 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager, enabling organizations and Microsoft partners to create their own cloud infrastructure.</p>
<p>Windows Azure will enable organizations to respond to realities such as the need to use the Web to provide customers with comprehensive information and to interact with an audience that has the potential to expand exponentially overnight; to integrate operations with partners&#8211;and sometimes even competitors&#8211;to meet customer needs; to add new capabilities quickly to respond to new opportunities; and to enable employees to work efficiently and effectively no matter where they are. These realities apply not just to businesses, but to organizations of all kinds: schools, governments, community groups, and more.</p>
<p>Traditional approaches to building technology infrastructure and delivering computing capabilities make it difficult and expensive to adjust to these realities. You need systems with enough capacity to meet the highest possible demand&#8211;capacity that includes servers and buildings to house them, the power to run them, and the people to manage them. You have to spread that capacity across locations so there&#8217;s a backup if one part fails. You have to solve issues like access for different types of users and compliance with tax regulations in all countries where your customers reside.</p>
<p>Designed specifically to meet the global scale that today&#8217;s organizations require, the Azure Services Platform will provide fundamentally new ways to deploy services and capabilities. It gives businesses the option to take advantage of the capacity available in the cloud as it is needed, reducing the need to make large upfront investments in infrastructure simply to be ready when demand spikes. It will enable developers to create applications that run in the cloud and provide the features, information, and interactivity that employees, partners, and customers expect&#8211;no matter how many of them there are, where they are in the world, or what device they have at hand.</p>
<p>SOFTWARE PLUS SERVICES AND THE POWER OF CHOICE</p>
<p>The Azure Services Platform reflects our belief that choice is critical for developers, companies, and consumers. It is also based on our belief that the key to delivering value today and in the future lies in combining the best aspects of software running on PCs, servers, and devices with the best aspects of services running on the Web-an approach we call &#8220;software plus services.&#8221;</p>
<p>Our software plus services approach lets people take full advantage of the incredible power of today&#8217;s devices. While there are undeniable benefits to being able to tap into the wealth of information and services that can be accessed over the Web through a browser, the interactive experiences that people expect on their PC, mobile phone, and media player depend on sophisticated software running on powerful processors.</p>
<p>The richness of these experiences will only increase as multicore processors expand the computing capabilities of our devices and new programming languages open the door to a new generation of applications that let us use more natural ways to interact with digital technology such as voice, touch, and gestures.</p>
<p>Software plus services also recognizes that for most companies, the ideal way to build IT infrastructure is to find the right balance of applications that are run and managed within the organization and applications that are run and managed in the cloud.</p>
<p>This balance varies by company. A financial services company may choose to maintain customer records within its own datacenter to provide the extra layers of protection that it feels are needed to safeguard the privacy of personal information. It may outsource IT systems that provide basic capabilities such as email.</p>
<p>This balance will change over time within an organization, as well. A company may run its own online transaction system most of the year, but outsource for added capacity to meet extra demand during the holiday season. With software plus services, an organization can move applications back and forth between its own servers and the cloud quickly and smoothly.</p>
<p>Today, companies around the world are implementing Microsoft technologies to take advantage of the best combination of on-premise software and cloud-based services. Using Microsoft Online Services, businesses including Coca-Cola Enterprises, Blockbuster, and Energizer access and manage Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Office Communications Server, and Live Meeting over the Web through a single, secure infrastructure. In addition, 1 million people rely on Office Live Workspace for sharing and collaborating with friends, family, and colleagues.</p>
<p>EXPANDING THE DEFINITION OF PERSONAL COMPUTING</p>
<p>Ultimately, the reason to create a cloud services platform is to continue to enhance the value that computing delivers, whether it&#8217;s by improving productivity, making it easier to communicate with colleagues, or simplifying the way we access information and respond to changing business conditions.</p>
<p>In the world of software plus services and cloud computing, this means extending the definition of personal computing beyond the PC to include the Web and an ever-growing array of devices. Our goal is to make the combination of PCs, mobile devices, and the Web something that is significantly than more the sum of its parts.</p>
<p>The starting point is to recognize the unique value of each part. The value of the PC lies in its computing power, its storage capacity, and its ability to help us be more productive and create and consume rich and complex documents and content.</p>
<p>For the Web, it&#8217;s the ability to bring together people, information, and services so we can connect, communicate, share, and transact with anyone, anywhere, at any time.</p>
<p>With the mobile phone and other devices, it&#8217;s the ability to take action spontaneously-to make a call, take a picture, or send a text message in the flow of our activities.</p>
<p>Through Live Mesh&#8211;a service from Microsoft that we announced earlier this year and about which we shared new information week&#8211;we&#8217;re beginning to bridge the PC, phone, and Web and create this next generation of connected experiences. Built on the Azure Services Platform, Live Mesh enables you to use programs and information stored on your work computer from your home PC, and vice versa. With Live Mesh, you can share folders and ensure that the information is automatically synchronized across your devices.</p>
<p>Live Mesh hints at how our lives will be transformed as the barriers between devices disappear and the option to connect instantly to people, devices, programs, and information becomes a reality.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re not quite there yet. Today, the Azure Services Platform is available only as a limited technology preview release. But as developers begin to combine the capabilities of this new platform with the amazing ongoing hardware and software innovations that we are seeing from companies across the industry, it will bring us significantly closer to the time when information, communication, and computing flows along with us seamlessly as we move through our day-to-day activities.</p>

<p>While rumors of its impending re-sale have apparently been greatly exaggerated, what&#8217;s true about <a href="http://www.stumbleupon.com">StumbleUpon</a> is that its new Web-centric look and feel and a new partnering program represent a major shift for the online discovery service. </p>
<p>The San Francisco-based company, which was founded in 2001 and sold to eBay last year for $75 million, is announcing tonight that users will no longer have to register or download its toolbar to &#8220;stumble&#8221; the Web.</p>
<p>Users can now simply start on StumbleUpon&#8217;s site, for example, and stumble all over the Web using their Web browser as guide rather than a toolbar.</p>
<p>The move is being made simply because most Internet users are increasingly loath to install Web plug-ins like toolbars, a requirement that naturally has slowed the growth of StumbleUpon&#8217;s service over time.</p>
<p>Currently, StumbleUpon has about six million registered users, although only a fraction of those are responsible for the approximately 12 million daily &#8220;stumbles,&#8221; all using a toolbar.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to attract users who do not want to use a toolbar, making it easy so they could use the service right from the get-go,&#8221; said Garrett Camp, co-founder of StumbleUpon, in an interview with BoomTown earlier today.  </p>
<p>Camp noted that that the toolbar&#8211;which has been downloaded between 11 and 12 million times&#8211;has seen that growth slow over time. Nonetheless, it is not being eliminated either.</p>
<p>&#8220;[Toolbar adoption] was still growing, but not accelerating,&#8221; said Camp. &#8220;Being able to stumble without one was the biggest feedback we got from users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Along with the Web-stumble change, StumbleUpon is also unveiling a redesigned homepage&#8211;see an example of it below; click on the image to make it larger&#8211;which is an attempt to make it more of a destination.</p>
<p>With the new look, visitors can find content by topic and more related to interests. Other changes include a new look for profile pages, as well as user reviews, rating and comments.</p>
<p>Along with its distribution shift and site renovation, StumbleUpon is unveiling a partner program called StumbleThru that will allow visitors to discover content within those sites without going to StumbleUpon.</p>
<p>Sites&#8211;starting with HowStuffWorks.com and the HuffingtonPost.com and followed within weeks by RollingStone.com and National Geographic&#8211;will display a StumbleUpon &#8220;badge&#8221; or custom widget.</p>
<p>It is not unlike similar buttons that now dot Web pages from news discovery services like Digg, which users can click to find related pages.</p>
<p>Essentially, much as Google (GOOG) delivers custom search within Web sites, StumbleUpon is offering custom surfing, giving publishers StumbleUpon technology to allow its users to surface content within their sites that is often deeply buried.</p>
<p>As to the blog reports that eBay (EBAY) had put StumbleUpon up for sale after owning it for a little more than a year, Camp essentially dismissed them, noting that the unit is still operating as an independent subsidiary of the auction giant. </p>
<p>&#8220;They have given us a lot of runway,&#8221; said Camp.</p>

<p><a href="http://walt.allthingsd.com">Walt Mossberg</a> and BoomTown are in San Diego for <a href="http://www.demo.com">DEMOfall</a>, which is one of two big tech start-up demo conferences taking place this week (the other is <a href="http://www.techcrunch50.com/2008/conference/">TechCrunch50</a> in San Francisco).</p>
<p>At both conferences, a passel of start-ups come to show off their wares to an audience of media, venture capitalists and one other.</p>
<p>The big focus at DEMOfall this year has been on social networking, mobile technology and cloud computing&#8211;three of the big Web 2.0 trends&#8211;although I liked the company that can make a stolen cellphone sound like a really annoying car alarm.</p>
<p>Walt and I also appeared here this afternoon onstage in what was called &#8220;Head-to-Head,&#8221; a feature we hope to debut on this site soon.</p>
<p>Essentially, the idea is to discuss and debate the top tech issues of the moment, although it was not meant to be a wrestling match between Walt and me (perish the thought!). </p>
<p>Thus, we interviewed each other&#8211;much as we do tech leaders on the stage of our <a href="http://www.allthingsd.com/d"><strong>D: All Things Digital</strong></a> conference.</p>
<p>Yesterday&#8217;s topics included the Google new Chrome browser, the growing power of the search giant, business prospects for social networking and the future of cellphones. </p>
<p>(I also did a decent impression of Alaska Governor and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but that&#8217;s another story.)</p>
<p>It will all eventually be available on DEMOfall&#8217;s Web site soon, but here&#8217;s my video about the conference so far:</p>

<p>But he was quite talkative about Google&#8217;s Chrome, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080901/the-entire-google-chrome-blog-announcement/">software to navigate the Internet that the search giant released</a> yesterday.</p>
<p>Brin talked about a lot of aspects of its development and implications, as well as its business prospects for Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>(Google&#8217;s other Co-Founder Larry Page is also in a small part of the video, also talking about Chrome.)</p>
<p>In a follow-up interview with me on the same video, Brin talks about possible market share for Chrome, the Mac version and the reaction from the company-that-shall-not-be-named-much&#8211;Microsoft (MSFT). </p>

<p>This is&#8211;as anyone on the receiving end of Page&#8217;s sometimes pointed manner knows (and BoomTown has been)&#8211;a big deal.</p>
<p>Page also starts to talk about how browser choice and innovation could make the planet a better place. </p>
<p>Of course! World peace through better browsing!</p>
<p>Then he moves on to questions from the media, bringing some of the Chrome team up to the stage.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a sequence of very serious questions on how to move tabs, privacy, mobile issues, WebKit, bug testing, Incognito, distribution plans and ongoing support for Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox (yes, it will continue&#8211;plus, Mozilla HQ is across the street! <em>Hmmm&#8230;</em>).</p>
<p>Ooops&#8211;the other Google (GOOG) Co-Founder, Sergey Brin, suddenly arrives late. He slips into the lineup of &#8220;Inside the Actors Studio&#8221;-type chairs, looking like he just woke up, in what is a classic move by Microsoft&#8217;s Bill Gates that I like to call the &#8220;bed-head maneuver.&#8221; (I like the spanking red Crocs though!)</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a sleepy ruse, as it turns out, as Brin deftly deflects a question about whether <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080902/thats-no-moon-browser-its-an-space-station-operating-system/">Chrome is an operating system for the Web</a>, given that Internet navigation software has become so integral to consumer behavior.</p>
<p>As in, a <em>Windows killer</em>!</p>
<p>Nope, says Brin (full video answer to come), totally ignoring my dubious look.</p>
<p>The distribution question is key, of course, since Google will want to get Chrome out there. So what&#8217;s the secret sauce? Because it is a &#8220;great product,&#8221; says Page.</p>
<p>As to why Google was doing this, VP Sundar Pichal said the search giant wanted to &#8220;start from scratch&#8221; in the browser game. Like baking a really good cake, one would assume.</p>
<p>When no reporter would get up and ask the obvious what-about-tweaking-Microsoft question, I finally did and also asked about the business plan for Chrome&#8211;as in, how will it help Google make more money?</p>
<p>Both Brin and Page answer again that it&#8217;s all about providing choice and also keeping the Web open, which will spur usage, which will rain more magical moolah down on the Googleplex.</p>
<p>Also (and video to come on this too), Brin later adds, Google never thinks of Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Well, at least on that issue it seems we&#8217;re back to Pinocchio&#8211;the long-nosed version&#8211;again.</p>

<p>Until then, here&#8217;s the <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20080902/first-test-of-googles-new-browser/">exclusive review in his Personal Technology column of the new Google Chrome browser by AllThingsD.com&#8217;s Walt Mossberg</a>, which was published at the same time as the news of its product launch was announced by the search behemoth this morning.</p>
<p>Walt&#8217;s reaction is mixed:</p>
<p>&#8220;My verdict: Chrome is a smart, innovative browser that, in many common scenarios, will make using the Web faster, easier and less frustrating. But this first version&#8211;which is just a beta, or test, release&#8211;is rough around the edges and lacks some common browser features Google plans to add later.&#8221;</p>
<p>Anyone can now download Chrome, but Walt has been testing it for a week. He also reviews Microsoft&#8217;s newest version of its powerful Internet Explorer, called IE8, which he likes better than Chrome.</p>
<p>Money quote: &#8220;The second beta version of IE8 is the best edition of Internet Explorer in years. It is packed with new features of its own, some of which are similar to those in Chrome, and some of which, in my view, top Chrome&#8217;s features.&#8221;</p>
<p>A little tarnish on the Chrome, it seems.</p>
