<p>In a week, the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace will gather at a swanky new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business. </p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities. </p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source. </p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community. </p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>How much is BoomTown and everyone else in Silicon Valley trying to nab a copy of Ben Mezrich&#8217;s likely-to-be-entirely-made-up-but-who-cares tale of dirty doings at Facebook?</p>
<p><em>Muchety-much!</em> So much so that I called all my book industry contacts&#8211;hey, I am a <em>published</em> author, ya know!&#8211;even though I have not actually completed reading a book since the Internet started and gave me permanent attention deficit disorder.</p>
<p>But, so far I have come up peanuts in grabbing an early copy of Mezrich&#8217;s tome, &#8220;The Accidental Billionaires,&#8221; which is set to come out July 14.</p>
<p>Facebook is not pleased, of course, and will likely be challenging Mezrich&#8217;s work as specious dreck. But the drama around the book should be interesting, to say the least.</p>
<p>More so, since this week also came news that actors <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10271662-36.html">Michael Cera and Shia LaBeouf</a> are being considered to play founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and that <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118005289.html?categoryid=13&#038;cs=1&#038;nid=2854">David Fincher</a>, the director of the lugubrious Brad Pitt snoozer, &#8220;The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,&#8221; is &#8220;attached&#8221; to the movie version. </p>
<p>Even better: &#8220;West Wing&#8221; creator  Aaron Sorkin will pen it and actor Kevin Spacey will produce the Columbia Pictures film, which will be called &#8220;The Social Network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, Hollywood sure came up with an original title!  </p>
<p>It certainly does not signal the juiciness of the proposal for the book&#8211;which did manage to leak out last year&#8211;with a lot of tale tales in it that seem to have pretty much tracked on its oddly purple subtitle of &#8220;The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.&#8221;</p>
<p>The cover&#8211;which you can see on the book&#8217;s<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Accidental-Billionaires-by-Ben-Mezrich/64052888061"> Facebook page</a> (the delicious gall of Mezrich!)&#8211;features a spilled martini glass and a red bra flung nearby.</p>
<p>Martinis? Red bras? Sex? Facebook? <em>Really?</em></p>

<p>Obviously, Mezrich has not actually met Zuckerberg, who is a very nice geekish young man, but who has approximately the sex appeal of a rack of Facebook servers.</p>
<p>Powerful yes! Spockish? Yes! Sexy? Um, no, no, no.</p>
<p>I will not even begin to parse the red bra thing, although I am attributing the martinis to stylish former COO (and now MySpace CEO) Owen Van Natta.  </p>
<p>But, apparently, the sex part seems to have to do with Zuckerberg starting the company with others while an undergrad at Harvard University, as a scheme to meet some ladies.</p>
<p>I would say there are easier ways to attract the womenfolk&#8211;not that I could give tips or anything&#8211;but whatever!</p>
<p>Thus, since I cannot get my mitts on the book (<em>yet!</em>), here&#8217;s my list of 10 completely made-up, utterly fabricated, just-call-me-Jayson-Blair things that should be in the book. </p>
<p><strong>10.)</strong> Facebook was actually going to be called OnlyPrettyLadyFacebook, but cooler heads prevailed.</p>

<p>Wait, that actually happened, and now some Russians are even investors.</p>
<p>Long live the Zuckrepublic of Palo Alto!</p>
<p><strong>8.)</strong> Reason for stealing, <em>oops</em>, borrowing, <em>oops</em> again, completely separately developing an exact replica of ConnectU social network at Harvard:</p>
<p>The Olympically muscle-headed Winklevoss twins used to beat up the brainy Zuckerberg on his way back to the dorm, prompting a &#8220;Revenge of the Nerds&#8221; plot line.</p>
<p><strong>7.)</strong> Facebook&#8217;s Beacon advertising? <em>All</em> Randi Zuckerberg&#8217;s idea, so she could find out what she was getting for her birthday from her billionaire-on-paper brother.</p>
<p><strong>6.)</strong> Zuckerberg&#8217;s famous flip-flops were made in China under dubious working conditions. Wait, that&#8217;s true too.</p>

<p><strong>5.)</strong> The 20-something Zuckerberg is actually 93 years old, a real-life version of Benjamin Button, which would explain the social awkwardness and staring-into-space-sometimes thing.</p>
<p><strong>4.)</strong> The no-breast-feeding-pictures controversy pretty much proves no one is interested in bras or, more precisely, what goes in them at Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>3.)</strong> COO Sheryl Sandberg is a cyborg sent to Facebook from Google for purposes of infiltration. She and her crafty sidekick, Elliott Schrage, will become self-aware in 2012 and hunt down Zuckerberg in a thrilling chase that will also become a movie.</p>
<p><strong>2.)</strong> The sex, drugs and rock-and-roll stuff actually all took place at MySpace, which really pisses off certifiably dashing co-Founders Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson because, once again, Zuckerberg stole their mojo!</p>

<p><strong>1.)</strong> This work of fiction, <em>oops</em>, &#8220;fact&#8221;-ion, <em>oops</em> again, nonfiction, is probably not going to sell many copies because it will mysteriously be uploaded in its entirety by a widget that will distribute it free to Facebook&#8217;s 200 million plus users while simultaneously SuperDuperPoking Mezrich, by throwing <em>real</em> sheep at him. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t warn you, Ben.</p>

<p>Mike Angus, EVP and General Counsel of Fox Interactive Media, is departing that job for another in New Corp. (NWS), as new digital head Jon Miller continues to reshape the division.</p>
<p>Last week, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next/">BoomTown reported that FIM CFO Ed McKenna</a> was leaving his post and also the company, part of many changes taking place related to News Corp.&#8217;s digital properties. (News Corp. owns Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all part of a major rejiggering of FIM, which came into being almost four years ago, although not an elimination of the unit, as has been reported.</p>
<p>More likely, it will include a name change&#8211;perhaps to the Digital Media Group&#8211;as well as a much streamlined organization that gives more autonomy to FIM&#8217;s Web, online advertising and publishing technology units.</p>
<p>The largest of those Internet sites in FIM is, of course, MySpace.</p>
<p>Since <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head">Miller arrived in the early spring</a>, he has focused on fixing the troubled, but still huge, social-networking site.</p>
<p>He quickly replaced its co-founder and CEO, Chris DeWolfe, with new managers.</p>
<p>Those execs, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down">led by former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta</a>, have done massive layoffs at MySpace recently and are now beginning a major overhaul of its product, which needs to innovate after a fall-off of growth and engagement. </p>
<p>&#8220;In a lot of ways, FIM has become an artificial construct and a lot of the infrastructure it has created should be out in the individual businesses,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;So, since it is not really an operating unit, it will be taken down to the minimal size to make it work.&#8221;</p>
<p>That apparently means it does not need a separate CFO or even a general counsel.</p>
<p>Currently, there are about 100 FIM-only employees, mostly in human resources, accounting and legal. Some of those will likely be farmed out to the units they primarily service or be let go if those units decide they do not need the staff.</p>
<p>The original idea of FIM was to create a unit to house most of News Corp.&#8217;s standalone digital units, including MySpace and IGN videogame and entertainment sites, and to have common financial, legal and even ad sales execs to serve them.</p>
<p>The concept is that they all had tech, legal, policy and synergistic reasons for being together.</p>
<p>Said a <a href="http://www.newscorp.com/news/news_250.html">News Corp. press release from July 2005</a>, which announced both the Angus and McKenna hires: </p>
<p>&#8220;News Corporation today announced the formation of Fox Interactive Media (FIM), a new unit that will leverage the strength of Fox’s distinctive entertainment, news and sports brands across the Internet to offer a richer online experience to its millions of users.&#8221;</p>
<p>That construct, said many people I interviewed inside and outside News Corp., was built to accommodate a much larger unit, with additional large acquisitions after the MySpace one.</p>
<p>Those never happened, although News Corp. was in many such talks with giants such as Yahoo (YHOO), Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL and Microsoft (MSFT) about trading assets.</p>
<p>&#8220;Over time, FIM became more like a shadow government,&#8221; said one person familiar with the situation. &#8220;Now, it makes sense for the properties to govern themselves, with a lot less meddling and let them rise and fall on their own.&#8221;</p>
<p>Many News Corp. sources point to the success of premium video service Hulu, which is run as a joint venture with GE (GE) unit NBC Universal, as being managed relatively autonomously by experienced Internet execs with less corporate involvement.</p>
<p>The result has been a popular and fast-growing site, which has gotten kudos for its innovative consumer offering (although it is still working on finding a highly lucrative business model).</p>
<p>Does that mean that some units, such as MySpace, could even be spun out again?</p>
<p>Doubtful for now, said several sources, but still a possibility.</p>
<p>In any case, the idea of a corporate layer over corporate units within a larger corporation does seem less than fleet in the faster-moving Web 2.0 world.</p>
<p>As to the new name of the unit, besides the chief digital officer title, Miller also was given the title of chairman and CEO of the newly created News Digital Media group.</p>
<p>Therefore, several sources said that the units could be under a simpler and lighter Digital Media Group umbrella.</p>

And today, MySpace, which is still 1,000-strong, has to face the cold, harsh light of day in the aftermath of the restructuring and get busy quickly figuring out a way to reinvigorate a brand that has suffered after a stunning rocket of a start many years ago.

So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here's a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who'll be making them.]]></description>

<p><em>Now what?</em></p>
<p>The party-all-night social-networking site that has been MySpace so far got a massive morning-after shock yesterday when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090616/myspace-a-place-for-layoffs/">30 percent of its workforce&#8211;or 420 employees&#8211;was laid off</a>.</p>
<p>And today, MySpace, which is still 1,000-strong, and its leaders have to face the cold, harsh light of day in the aftermath of the restructuring and get busy quickly figuring out a way to reinvigorate a brand that has suffered after a stunning rocket of a start many years ago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true since a report also just came out by market research outfit comScore (SCOR) showing that Facebook has surpassed MySpace in the key U.S. market as the top social-networking site.</p>
<p>So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here&#8217;s a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who&#8217;ll be making them.</p>
<p><strong>MORE LAYOFFS?</strong></p>
<p>“Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company,” said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">new CEO Owen Van Natta</a> in a statement about the layoffs. </p>
<p>What he did not say was that cost-cutting via layoffs is almost always the first move in a turnaround.</p>
<p>These cuts have actually been long in coming, but it&#8217;s promising that they finally happened so quickly after Van Natta&#8211;along with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">COO Michael Jones</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/myspace-musical-chairs-jason-hirschhorn-also-in-at-myspace-as-chief-product-officer/">Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn</a>&#8211;were brought in by News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller to replace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe. </p>

<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg" alt="layoff" title="layoff" width="224" height="224" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-14661" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;The layoffs were a total reset,&#8221; said one source, who noted that unless MySpace&#8217;s advertising business falls off a cliff, which it is unlikely to do in the short term, more cuts in the U.S. will not be needed for now. That might not be true internationally, where MySpace has not performed as strongly.</p>
<p>At this point, MySpace is now about the same size as chief rival Facebook&#8217;s staff, which has been growing much more quickly (you can see my <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090615/kara-tours-the-new-facebook-hq-and-gets-ripped-the-uncut-video/">video tour of its new Silicon Valley HQ here</a>).</p>
<p>Except for not making the move to new offices in Los Angeles, the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace is also not going to be closing offices elsewhere, as has been reported, most especially its San Francisco one.</p>
<p>In fact, Van Natta is traveling to visit all of them, his memo said, over the next several days.</p>
<p><strong>LEADERSHIP</strong></p>
<p>Despite the large number of layoffs and the departure of DeWolfe, most expect there to be very little change in the top ranks of MySpace leadership for the time being.</p>
<p>While Jeff Berman, MySpace&#8217;s president of sales and marketing, has been rumored to be on the bubble, multiple sources said he would be staying in his job.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll continue to be aided by Angela Courtin, SVP of marketing, who is well-regarded. </p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/281x211jpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/281x211jpg.jpeg" alt="281x211jpg" title="281x211jpg" width="281" height="211" class="alignright size-full wp-image-14662" /></a></p>
<p>The same is true of the other major question mark, co-founder Tom Anderson (pictured here), who has held the president title at the company and was in charge of its products.</p>
<p>Anderson does not have a new title yet and will no longer be in a key operational role, but many sources said his historical knowledge and his tight relationship with the MySpace community make it important that he remain at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tom is clearly in touch with what has made MySpace special,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;And it is important that he remain to keep the culture alive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also staying for now is Tom Andrus, who has been SVP of product management under Anderson and is now reporting to Hirschhorn. While initially upset by being supplanted so quickly by new execs, most sources told me that he is a solid and well-liked exec.</p>
<p>The same is said of Jason Oberfest, SVP of business development, who is also staying. So too, CTO Aber Whitcomb, whom many thought would be leaving.</p>
<p>The only major exec departure I could confirm was Fox Interactive Media CFO Ed McKenna, who was in charge of MySpace too. Sources said will be leaving the company as his function gets consolidated into higher corporate units at News Corp.</p>
<p><strong>PRODUCT REHAUL</strong></p>
<p>Lastly, most noted that MySpace cannot cut its way back to health, which is why sources said its execs are now beginning to engage in a major overhaul of the product itself.</p>
<p>While leadership had considered bringing in a separate new skunkworks-type team to do that, it has been decided that the current staff&#8211;helped by some outside consultants&#8211;will be doing a top-to-bottom redo of MySpace.</p>
<p>MySpace could use it. As you can see from the charts below from a poll that we did for the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference recently&#8211;and where Walt Mossberg and I interviewed Van Natta and Miller onstage (see the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/jon-miller-and-owen-van-natta/">highlights video below</a>)&#8211;it has a lot to fix, including reengaging users, improving technology and differentiating itself from Facebook.</p>
<p>And, in fact, carving itself out as a different product than Facebook is one major aim because the offerings&#8211;while both are social networks&#8211;are quite different in approach. Facebook has evolved into more of a utility, while MySpace has made better inroads as an entertainment hub.</p>

<p>Whatever changes are made, most sources note that MySpace needs to try to remain true to its original frisky and fun start-up core, while innovating a next-generation product and continuing to goose its advertising business.</p>
<p>That also includes starting up renegotiations with Google (GOOG) about its search-advertising partnership, talks that are just getting started now (more on that soon).</p>
<p>Most of all, said one person, pointing to the long and painfully public struggle at Yahoo (YHOO), leadership has to stop the focus on MySpace being broken as soon as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;MySpace needed to be shaken up, but it is still a very powerful brand and has huge traffic,&#8221; said the source. &#8220;Its management has to project a sense inside and outside that it is not only fixable, but also can lead again.&#8221;</p>
<p>As with Yahoo, Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL and many others before it, that&#8217;s no easy task for MySpace, starting today. </p>

<p>MySpace has officially announced the appointment of entrepreneur and former AOL exec Mike Jones as COO, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">BoomTown reported earlier today</a>.</p>
<p>But the social-networking site also named former Sling Media top exec Jason Hirschhorn as chief product officer in what has become a series of senior management moves at MySpace.</p>
<p>The paidContent Web site <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-industry-moves-userplane-founder-mike-jones-joins-myspace-as-coo/">first reported on the Hirschhorn appointment</a> earlier this morning.</p>
<p>Besides Sling, which he recently left in a mass departure of top execs, Hirschhorn was also the top digital exec at MTV Networks and was part of the team at Viacom (VIA) that unsuccessfully tried to buy MySpace many years ago.</p>
<p>Both Hirschhorn and Jones, who are already based in Los Angeles, will report to newly named CEO Owen Van Natta, the former COO of Facebook, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">replaced MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe last week</a>.</p>
<p>Recently installed News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller has put in place a trio of well-known Internet execs at the top of MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the huge growth at Facebook.</p>
<p>MySpace&#8217;s motto is &#8220;A Place for Friends.&#8221; But it might very well now be: A place for wandering digital execs.</p>
<p>And expect more top execs to wander away from MySpace too. Once the trio get their bearings, many sources indicate that News Corp., the owner of MySpace, has given Van Natta and his key execs free rein to remake the unit.</p>
<p>There is a lot to fix at the entertainment-, music- and media-heavy site, from a renegotiation with Google (GOOG) over its advertising search deal to goosing traffic to innovating its look and feel.</p>
<p>In addition, MySpace is likely to forge closer tech ties with Silicon Valley, where Facebook is based.</p>
<p>News Corp. already noted that it was in talks with MySpace co-founder and President Tom Anderson about a new role in the company. Also likely to get a major look-see are top execs like sales head Jeff Berman and CTO Aber Whitcomb, as well as a number of others.</p>
<p>To begin, though, the trio will meet the staff of MySpace, more than 1,000 people, in an all-hands event to be held outside of its building in Beverly Hills, Calif., at about 3:30 p.m. today.</p>
<p>Sources tell me there is no space big enough at the HQ to accommodate them, so the courtyard of the building will be used.</p>
<p>BoomTown is in Los Angeles today, by coincidence, but will not be crashing the event, so send interesting tidbits my way.</p>

Michael Jones has been named Chief Operating Officer and Jason Hirschhorn has been named Chief Product Officer, effective immediately. Hirschhorn joined MTV Networks following the acquisition of his company, Mischief New Media, which provided interactive services to the entertainment industry. </p>

<p>New MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta starts his first day on the job at MySpace bright and early this morning, coming to its Beverly Hills HQ as he takes over for co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Along with him will be a new COO, former AOL exec Mike Jones, whose appointment will be announced this morning, sources said.</p>
<p>The pair will meet with MySpace staff today at 3:30 p.m. PDT.</p>
<p>Jones was the founder of Userplane, a social-networking application maker that was bought by then-AOL head Jon Miller in 2006.</p>
<p>Miller is now the digital chief at News Corp. (NWS), which owns MySpace.</p>

<p>Jones left the Time Warner (TWX) unit last year to start Tsavo, a digital content start-up. </p>
<p>Van Natta, who was running the Project Playlist start-up until his appointment, has stronger Silicon Valley ties. For now, he will commute to MySpace from Northern California, where his family lives. </p>
<p>Van Natta was a former top-ranking Facebook exec, still holding a small stake in the MySpace rival, and has also worked at Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>But, with a strong product and technology background, the Los Angeles-based Jones is an excellent choice to be a partner to Van Natta&#8211;who was hired by Miller last week in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">flurry of change at the social-networking site</a>.</p>

<p>They must also play deft diplomats at MySpace, where many remain loyal to DeWolfe and to co-founder Tom Anderson. Anderson is in talks to step down as president for an unspecified new role in the company. He currently remains president.</p>

<p>Former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta has finally been officially named as CEO of MySpace, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/van-natta-in-at-myspace-appointment-to-be-announced-tomorrow/">BoomTown reported yesterday</a>, according to a press release from News Corp.</p>
<p>He will replace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe, who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/its-official-dewolfe-out-as-myspace-ceo-co-founder-tom-anderson-also-moving-aside/">stepped down from the job</a> earlier this week. DeWolfe will remain a strategic adviser at MySpace.</p>
<p>Van Natta, 39, will take over immediately and be based in Los Angeles, where MySpace has its HQ. But, with strong ties to Silicon Valley, he is likely to give the site more of a high-tech infusion.</p>
<p>Van Natta has most recently been running Project Playlist, a controversial music-sharing start-up based in Palo Alto, Calif. Previous to that, he worked at Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>He will be replaced there, in turn, by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/project-playlist-names-former-mtv-exec-sykes-as-ceo-replacing-van-natta/">well-known former MTV Networks exec and co-founder John Sykes</a>.</p>
<p>No other new top execs at the huge social-networking site have been named yet, as some had reported.</p>
<p>Instead, it will be up to Van Natta, who will work closely with and report to new News Corp. digital head Jon Miller, to energize the current staff and recruit new talent to MySpace.</p>
<p>The social-networking giant has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the juggernaut growth of Facebook.</p>
<p>Van Natta played a key role in Facebook&#8217;s formation, striking key investment and advertising deals with Microsoft (MSFT), for example. He left after it was clear he was not going to become CEO, a job held by founder Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, MySpace is still the largest social network in the U.S., although Facebook is close to surpassing its size.</p>
<p><strong>All Things Digital</strong> broke the news earlier this week that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down/">Van Natta was the top choice of News Corp.</a> (NWS), which owns MySpace.</p>

<p>Former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta will be named CEO of MySpace as early as tomorrow said sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>He will replace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe, who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/its-official-dewolfe-out-as-myspace-ceo-co-founder-tom-anderson-also-moving-aside/">stepped down from the job</a> yesterday. DeWolfe will remain a strategic adviser at MySpace.</p>
<p>News Corp. declined comment.</p>
<p>No other top execs at the huge social-networking site will be named yet, as some have reported.</p>
<p>Instead, it will be up to Van Natta, who will work closely with new News Corp. digital head Jon Miller, to energize the current staff and recruit new talent to MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the juggernaut growth of Facebook.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, MySpace is still the largest social network in the U.S., although Facebook is close to surpassing its size.</p>
<p><strong>All Things Digital</strong> broke the news yesterday that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down/">Van Natta was the top choice of News Corp.</a> (NWS), which owns MySpace.</p>
<p>(News Corp. also owns Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)</p>
<p>In his new job, Van Natta has a lot of challenges, including: reinvigorating the MySpace brand, upgrading its technology, adding more innovation to its feature set, continuing to grow its nascent advertising business and dealing with the expected end to its lucrative online ad deal with Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>He also must play deft diplomat at MySpace, where many remain loyal to DeWolfe and to co-founder Tom Anderson. Anderson was in talks to step down as president yesterday for an unspecified new role in the company. He currently remains president.</p>
<p>Van Natta knows from tense company politics. He <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook/">left Facebook last year</a> after serving as its COO, and also as chief revenue officer, after his relationship with founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg foundered.</p>
<p>But before that, he was key to striking its lucrative search and advertising deal with Microsoft (MSFT) as well as negotiating the $240 million investment by the software giant that valued Facebook at an eye-popping $15 billion.</p>
<p>Van Natta has most recently been running Project Playlist, a controversial music-sharing site.</p>
<p>A purchase of the start-up is not part of this deal, sources said, as it had been in previous talks Van Natta has had with News Corp. about other digital jobs.</p>
<p>Previous to Facebook, Van Natta worked at Amazon (AMZN) in a number of capacities.</p>

<p>Finally, Owen Van Natta is about to win out over a founder.</p>

<p>DeWolfe will likely get a title as a special adviser to MySpace in a deal that is still coming together.</p>
<p>Settling all the specifics could take at least a day and there is always the possibility that this changing-of-the-guard deal could fall apart. But multiple sources close to the situation said it is more just a matter of ironing out the details.</p>
<p>Thus, the die seems cast for Van Natta to take over the thorny job of rehauling MySpace, which is owned by News Corp. (NWS).</p>
<p>(News Corp. also owns Dow Jones, which owns this Web site).</p>
<p>In a post this morning, MediaMemo was the first to name Van Natta as the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/chris-dewolfe-likely-to-step-down-as-ceo-news-corp-talking-to-facebook-veteran-owen-van-natta/">only candidate in the running</a> to take over as leader of MySpace.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s familiar territory for him.</p>
<p>Van Natta never got the big job at Facebook, which is under the firm control of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>But Van Natta&#8211;who got to Facebook in its early days after stints at various companies, including Amazon (AMZN)&#8211;was a key early player in making the social-networking site into the juggernaut it is today.</p>
<p>He played a large role in its advertising and investment deals with Microsoft (MSFT), for example, as well as in hiring many of its current execs.</p>
<p>But, like many at Facebook, Van Natta left <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook">Facebook in early 2008 under tense circumstances</a>, although he now is on good terms with Zuckerberg and others at Facebook.</p>
<p>Maybe not any longer.</p>
<p>In a delicious digital irony, he will be taking on Facebook head on, as MySpace&#8211;once the momentum player in the space&#8211;tries to regain its step against Facebook.</p>
<p>Van Natta is currently CEO of music start-up Project Playlist and it is not yet clear what will happen there. When he was previously talking to MySpace about running its music site, there was speculation that it might buy the start-up.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s developments have happened quickly and without a lot of advance planning.</p>

<p>The talks to complete this deal are being led by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head">new digital boss Jon Miller</a> (pictured here), who came to News Corp. last month.</p>
<p>News Corp. officials declined to comment on the developing situation.</p>
<p>But sources said that Miller hadn&#8217;t been planning on getting rid of DeWolfe in the near future, and until yesterday, he was still evaluating his options. </p>
<p>News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch had once treated DeWolfe as a favorite and gave him significant autonomy at MySpace.</p>
<p>But Murdoch, who brought Miller on, has been leaning toward a change in leadership as MySpace&#8217;s traffic has stagnated and its buzz and momentum have moved to Facebook.</p>
<p>Under DeWolfe, many have felt it has dropped the ball on innovation and in making key improvements to its technology and features.</p>
<p>Worst of all, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090217/myspaces-google-gravy-train-set-to-stop-next-year">MySpace&#8217;s lucrative $900 million search advertising deal with Google</a> (GOOG) is also coming to an end, a deal that essentially paid for the News Corp. acquisition.</p>
<p>Recently, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090303/kapur-stepping-down-as-myspace-coo">several key execs have left too</a>, including COO Amit Kapur.</p>
<p>In general, the social-networking giant has had an air of decline about it, despite its still-enormous size.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Murdoch had left the decision about the site&#8217;s leadership to Miller, his new hire, sources said. </p>
<p>Miller had been talking to many and was indeed leaning toward putting a new CEO in place, but not in this fashion. He had hoped to work out the transition with DeWolfe, said several sources.</p>
<p>Miller himself had been badly treated, when Time Warner (TWX) dumped him as CEO of AOL several years ago. Ironically, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090312/jeff-bewkes-lays-off-aol-ceo-and-president-in-a-new-york-minute/">media giant just ousted the execs</a> who ousted Miller.</p>
<p>But Miller&#8217;s options narrowed last night, once TechCrunch ran a <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/21/news-corp-exploring-myspace-ceo-options/">story</a> claiming that News Corp. had hired a headhunting firm to &#8220;scour for possible replacements&#8221; for DeWolfe.</p>
<p>News Corp. hadn&#8217;t actually hired a headhunter at all, but the story spooked DeWolfe into calling Miller to ask what his plans were. That conversation led to today&#8217;s negotiations.</p>
<p>Van Natta is well known at News Corp. and was, at one point, the leading candidate to head up MySpace Music, which launched last fall, and the two sides held extensive conversations.</p>
<p>But Van Natta did not like the job&#8217;s org chart: Rather than a standalone company, MySpace Music is simply a unit of MySpace, reporting to DeWolfe.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081105/myspace-music-ceo-debuting-tomorrow/">MTV executive Courtney Holt</a> eventually took the job.</p>
<p>Van Natta is intertwined with MySpace in other ways. </p>
<p>Project Playlist, the free music-streaming site he took over last fall, has seen traffic plummet after <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081223/facebook-bails-on-project-playlist-too/">MySpace, along with Facebook, cut off the sites&#8217; access to their users</a>, a move prompted by lawsuits from several major music companies.</p>
<p>Van Natta has made some headway at extracting the company from its legal mess, which predated his hiring, and he has hammered out a settlement with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090325/a-win-for-project-playlist-emi-drops-suit-signs-on/">EMI Music Group</a>.</p>
<p>But Playlist is still being sued by other music labels.</p>
<p>And, even music sites that aren&#8217;t in legal trouble are struggling to keep their heads above water.</p>
<p>Thus, plenty of Silicon Valley watchers&#8211;including BoomTown, who calls Van Natta periodically to ask why he seemed to enjoyed the pain of running an online music business&#8211;have wondered why Van Natta landed at Playlist in the first place, and have speculated that he has been looking for a way out.</p>
<p>He has been on the short list for many big Web jobs at places like Microsoft and other Silicon Valley start-ups, but has not bitten until now.</p>

<p>News Corp. will officially announce its shaken-but-not-stirred digital lineup this morning, as former AOL head Jon Miller takes over as the media giant&#8217;s new chief digital officer.</p>
<p>And Peter Levinsohn&#8211;his predecessor at Fox Interactive Media, which Miller will inherit in a new form, along with a larger portfolio, all based in New York&#8211;will also officially take up his new post as the key digital exec at News Corp.&#8217;s film and television studios in California.</p>
<p>In the press release, the company said Miller &#8220;will be charged with driving digital strategy across News Corp. businesses.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a statement, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch said: “Our focus moving forward is twofold: to enable our digital businesses to flourish as individual entities and to bolster the digital strategies of our core media properties by treating them as central to, and not separate from, the enterprise.&#8221;</p>
<p>The release went on to say that Miller will have sway over News Corp.’s standalone digital businesses, including MySpace, IGN Entertainment, Photobucket, as well as Jamba and the Hulu joint venture with NBC Universal, and will &#8220;collaborate with operational heads and digital executives through all lines of business around the globe to develop and refine digital efforts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last Friday, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head">BoomTown and others outlined the moves</a>, part of Murdoch&#8217;s efforts to make significant changes related to how the company&#8217;s digital efforts are managed.</p>
<p>The shifts come in the wake of the previously announced upcoming departure of COO Peter Chernin, who was in charge of digital efforts at News Corp.</p>

<p>Miller (pictured here), whose noncompete agreement with Time Warner (TWX) from his AOL stint just ran out, will report directly to Murdoch. Besides the chief digital officer title, he will also be chairman and CEO of the newly created News Digital Media group.</p>
<p>Levinsohn, a longtime News Corp. exec, is also getting a significant new job as president of new media and digital distribution at the Fox studios, coordinating delivery of its film and television assets on all mobile and digital platforms. </p>
<p>It will be his task to create sustainable advertising and other business models in this fast-moving arena, as well as create innovative new content for those platforms.</p>

<p>News Corp. said that Levinsohn will oversee &#8220;Fox Filmed Entertainment’s entire content portfolio across all digital distribution channels, including Hulu and third party platforms in the broadband, mobile and gaming markets. He will direct all policy decisions regarding new usage and business models, content protection, and will further develop the studio’s original and derivative content businesses by working with creative talent, distributors and brands to bring short and long-form digital entertainment to audiences worldwide.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s definitely a complex, challenging job&#8211;although a big opportunity&#8211;for the affable Levinsohn, who never sought the limelight as some who worked for him have, most especially MySpace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Both previous FIM heads, Ross Levinsohn and Peter Levinsohn, many sources said, had to deal with DeWolfe&#8217;s own sphere of influence within News Corp. (NWS), especially his close ties to Murdoch. Both FIM and MySpace are located in Beverly Hills, Calif.</p>
<p>As I previously wrote, relations between DeWolfe and both those execs could be described, at best, as tense.</p>
<p>Miller now inherits that relationship at the social-networking site. And he must also navigate the complexities of the global media giant, as well as figure out ongoing relationships with digital companies, such as Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO) and his former company, Time Warner (TWX) unit AOL.</p>
<p>The same, of course, goes for Levinsohn.</p>
<p>And, especially with the weak economy, which often slows innovation at large companies, it is likely the pair will end up having to work together closely if News Corp. is to have a cohesive and successful digital strategy under the new set-up going forward.</p>

<p>Peter Levinsohn has been named to the new position of President New Media and Digital Distribution, Fox Filmed Entertainment, the unit that controls the company’s film and television content worldwide. He will report directly to Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman, chairmen and CEOs of Fox Filmed Entertainment.</p>
<p>Levinsohn will oversee Fox Filmed Entertainment’s entire content portfolio across all digital distribution channels, including Hulu and third party platforms in the broadband, mobile and gaming markets. He will direct all policy decisions regarding new usage and business models, content protection, and will further develop the studio’s original and derivative content businesses by working with creative talent, distributors and brands to bring short and long-form digital entertainment to audiences worldwide. </p>
<p>Mr. Murdoch said, “Peter Levinsohn did an extraordinary job running Fox Interactive Media, having steered MySpace’s trajectory to the world’s leading social media portal. He is the perfect executive to place at the heart of our global content business as we look to further exploit our movie and television properties over new and yet to be discovered platforms.”</p>
<p>“As one of the leading suppliers of content worldwide, we’ve made huge strides in giving consumers an array of choice when it comes to consuming digital content,” said Levinsohn. “I look forward to working with Jim and Tom and their teams to further our commitment to building distribution models that are both sustainable and durable over the long term.”</p>
<p>“With a newly minted portfolio that combines the absolute best in film and television entertainment, I’m thrilled to have Peter return to the studio to lead this very important initiative as we deepen our commitment to propel our digital businesses forward,” said Jim Gianopulos, co-chairman Fox Filmed Entertainment. Tom Rothman, co-chairman Fox Filmed Entertainment, said, “We look forward to leveraging Peter’s deep knowledge of emerging markets as we bolster our strategies to bring viewers new content built explicitly for these expanding platforms.”</p>
<p>Levinsohn, a 20-year News Corp. veteran, returns to the studio after running Fox Interactive Media, where he oversaw MySpace, IGN, Photobucket and FoxSports.com, among other web properties. Prior to Fox Interactive Media, Levinsohn held a number of senior positions at the company, including president of Fox Digital Media, and president of Worldwide Pay Television and Video on Demand for Fox Filmed Entertainment.</p>
<p>Mr. Miller was most recently a founding partner of Velocity Interactive Group, a digital media and communications investment firm. From 2002 to 2006, he served as Chairman and CEO of AOL, where he restructured the company&#8217;s core business lines, focusing on online advertising. Through his leadership, AOL delivered record annual profit growth of 21 percent and increased online advertising growth, the centerpiece of its new business model, by 46 percent. Previously, Miller was CEO and President of USA Information and Services, now IACI and Expedia (the company split in two in 2005), where he helped build industry-leading positions in such areas as online travel, ticketing, and electronic retailing. </p>
<p>Earlier in his career, Mr. Miller spent several years as Managing Director of Nickelodeon International, a unit of Viacom&#8217;s MTV Networks. He also served as the Chief Executive of Paramount’s first branded international channel, launching the Paramount Comedy Channel in London. He spent five years at NBA Entertainment where, as Vice President of Programming, he expanded the NBA’s TV production business as well as its overall brand image.</p></blockquote>

<p>BoomTown has <a href="http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/digital-changes-for-news-corp-ex-aoler-jon-miller-becomes-digital-media-ceo-fim-prez-peter-levinsohn-to-big-studio-job/">confirmed a report by Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily</a> that former AOL head Jon Miller is set to take over as digital head at News Corp., replacing Peter Levinsohn.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://rosslevinsohn.wordpress.com/2009/03/28/as-the-internet-world-turns/">move was also mentioned in a blog post</a> by Miller&#8217;s partner in an investment company, Ross Levinsohn, who once held a smaller version of the job Miller is taking.</p>
<p>But Miller has not actually signed up for the job officially, since he is still under a noncompete agreement with Time Warner from his AOL stint. It runs out in three days, in fact. </p>
<p>As some might recall, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080801/boomtown-plea-to-jeff-bewkes-free-jon-miller">Miller was barred from taking a board seat at Yahoo</a> last year by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes.</p>
<p>But sources said News Corp. is likely to announce Miller as head by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.</p>
<p>Once he does sign,  which seems likely, Miller will become News Corp.&#8217;s chief digital officer, reporting directly to the media giant&#8217;s head, Rupert Murdoch. Based in New York, he will also be chairman and CEO of the newly created News Digital Media group.</p>
<p>Sources noted that this is a a different and larger platform for Miller, bigger than just the Fox Interactive Media job that Levinsohn held. It will go across all properties held by News Corp. across the globe.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea is to mainstream the digital initiatives, which have been all over the company,&#8221; said one source close to the situation.</p>
<p>Levinsohn will move to another job within News Corp. (NWS) at the film and television studios, to coordinate delivery of its assets on mobile and digital platforms, sources said. It will be his task to create sustainable business models in this fast-moving arena.</p>
<p>News Corp. has, in fact, been searching for a new digital head for the past several months, talking to a number of well-known Internet execs, including Joost head Mike Volpi, former AOL exec Jim Bankoff and former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta.</p>
<p>The decision to rejigger News Corp.&#8217;s digital assets came after the announcement that President and COO Peter Chernin was leaving his job and has largely been pushed by Murdoch.</p>
<p>Previously, Chernin had been in charge of digital efforts at News Corp.</p>
<p>The search for the position was, in fact, conducted by well-known head tech and media headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>Ironically, Miller is still essentially taking a job once held by his current partner, Ross Levinsohn, at the investment fund, Velocity Interactive Group. As I noted above, Levinsohn confirmed the Miller offer from News Corp. in a blog post called &#8220;Thunderclap.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move is a fascinating one, and one of many in the digital arena of late among its top execs. Former Google (GOOG) exec Tim Armstrong recently took over as CEO of the Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL, for example.</p>
<p>Also, even though the job will cover all the the many News Corp. Web properties, even more compelling will be how Miller will deal with its largest and most prominent asset: social-networking giant MySpace.</p>
<p>More to the point, it will be riveting to see how he will handle managing MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Both previous FIM heads, Ross Levinsohn and Peter Levinsohn, many sources said, had to deal with DeWolfe&#8217;s own sphere of influence within News Corp., especially his close ties to Murdoch. Both FIM and MySpace are located in Beverly Hills, Calif.</p>
<p>Relations between DeWolfe and both those execs could be described, at best, as tense.</p>
<p>But Miller, who is a much bigger Internet player in his own right, with a more powerful charge from Murdoch, certainly is likely to shift that balance of power.</p>

<p>Amit Kapur, who was elevated to COO of MySpace early last year, will be stepping down from the position. He&#8217;s leaving the company to <a href="http://valleywag.gawker.com/5163915/myspace-memo-three-top-execs-leaving">start a new venture with two other MySpace executives</a>, Jim Benedetto, SVP of Engineering, and Steve Pearman, SVP of Product Strategy.</p>
<p>Selected by CEO Chris DeWolfe, Kapur had been charged with helping drive innovation in content and also business development at the social network, which has lately seen some of its thunder stolen by the faster-growing Facebook.</p>
<p>MySpace declined comment.</p>
<p>But here is a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080206/myspaces-chris-dewolfe-and-amit-kapur-speak">video interview I did with Kapur</a>, as well as DeWolfe, at a MySpace party in San Francisco, right after he got his COO title. </p>

<p>BoomTown is headed to the 2009 <a href="http://festival.sundance.org/2009/">Sundance Film Festival</a> today, an annual journey I make to moderate panels about the tech industry.</p>
<p>The festival officially opened yesterday in Park City, Utah. And while still largely a confab of independent filmmakers, Hollywood deal types and various celebrities rifling though swag orgies, a lot of geeks are there too.</p>
<p>Since Sundance also has taken a keen interest in all things digital, ATD moves its HQ there for a few days every January, to the New Frontier on Main digs, to talk to those gathered&#8211;for what have become standing-room-only events&#8211;about whither tech and how and when it is eventually going to eat the entertainment industry&#8217;s lunch.</p>
<p>Oh yes, my friend: Silicon Valley will eat lunch in this snowy town again!</p>
<p>And for good reason, given that the entire movie industry has long worried about how digital distribution will impact its business, especially as every year, the encroachment continues at a relentless pace.</p>
<p>This year, we&#8217;re going even more futuristic, with a panel tomorrow at noon titled, &#8220;Where Do We Go From Here? Icons of the Digital Age.&#8221;</p>
<p>In fact, the panelists are that: Chad Hurley, the co-founder and CEO of the Google (GOOG) video service, YouTube; Jason Kilar, CEO of Hulu, the premium online video service that is a joint venture of News Corp. (NWS) and GE (GE) unit NBC Universal; and Reed Hastings, founder and CEO of Netflix (NFLX), the largest online DVD rental service, which has been moving into an ever wider range of distribution of movies on the Web. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones and this Web site.)</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the panel description:</p>
<p>&#8220;Remember the world before the Internet, email, and cell phones? Now we try and picture it 15 years from now. If we are currently in the greatest information revolution since the printing press, what can we expect next? How will media, entertainment, and our digital lifestyles change? This roundtable assembles visionaries of the digital revolution to discuss the limits of our imagination.&#8221;</p>
<p>It should be an interesting exercise in creative prognostication, although I for one cannot remember the world before the Internet, email and cellphones.</p>
<p>I am also dragging my two young sons there, along with ATD majordomo Ed, so expect lots of filming of our own, with my shaky Flip Mino, to be posted all weekend.</p>

<p>Last night, BoomTown checked out the new space MySpace is renovating for its soon-to-open San Francisco office. The occasion was a party the social-networking site held for developers as part of its recent platform launch. </p>
<p>In other words, the night MySpace started kissing up to the widget makers with tasty burgers and big techie hugs.</p>
<p>And those widgeteers showed up in full force for the sandbox-themed event (I even brought my kids, who played in the actual sandboxes set up and made quite a mess!), including Slide&#8217;s Max Levchin, RockYou&#8217;s Jia Shen, Google&#8217;s OpenSocial guru Joe Kraus (who apparently did not get to go to Disneyland with the rest of the company) and many others.</p>
<p>Also in attendance were MySpace&#8217;s top brass, including Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson, as well as its new COO Amit Kapur and lots of other MySpace minions, coming up from Los Angeles.</p>
<p>MySpace &#8211;which is owned by News Corp., which also owns Dow Jones, which owns this site&#8211;is still the largest social network both in terms of users and page views. But its growth has been slowing and, worse, its thunder has been stolen by the faster-growing and more-hyped Facebook, based in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Last year, that competition was in sharp relief when Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckberberg opened its platform up to third-party developers. The crafty move sent widget makers into near ecstasy. (&#8221;He likes us, he really likes us!&#8221;) </p>
<p>And while widgets were actually on its site for a while, MySpace had not formalized those relationships with programmers and even battled with them, which has been the source of consternation in the development community.</p>
<p>Now, the company is trying to mend those broken links and has built more organized systems for letting software developers build a range of new services for its users. It also partnered with Google in the search giant&#8217;s efforts to open up the development process with its OpenSocial initiative.</p>
