<p>It&#8217;s well known that Google doesn&#8217;t do much in the way of marketing around its search service.</p>
<p>While you will catch advertising for the Chrome browser or for Android smartphones on the Web, given Google&#8217;s huge 70 percent market share in search, it hardly needs to attract users.</p>
<p>So, then, what is one to make of a series of new videos, which look suspiciously like commercials, that Google (GOOG) launched late last week on its blog and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/searchstories">posted on a new channel on YouTube</a>?</p>
<p>Called &#8220;Search Stories,&#8221; there are a half-dozen of the short videos, some more adorkable than others, which star the main search box.</p>
<p>One thing they have in common is that they have the look and feel of a marketing campaign, with the tag line &#8220;Search on.&#8221;</p>
<p>They also stress a variety of Google products, such as mapping, video, price comparisons, email and more.</p>
<p>One imagines what pre-Batman Bruce Wayne would look for, complete with ominous music, including search terms such as &#8220;coping with loss,&#8221; &#8220;flexible kevlar&#8221; and &#8220;gotham city crime statistics.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another video, called &#8220;Newbie,&#8221; has a grandmother searching on &#8220;keeping in touch with grandkids&#8221; and&#8211;in a clever dig at the MySpace and Facebook social networking services&#8211;&#8220;what is myfacebook,&#8221; which gets corrected by Google to &#8220;what is facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Could it be that the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/beware-google-bing-is-going-to-suck-your-blood-um-market-share-the-new-commercial">$100 million marketing push</a> Microsoft (MSFT) launched for its Bing search service, which seems to be <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091116/comscore’s-october-2009-search-data-google-and-microsoft-up-yahoo-down/">slowly gaining share</a>, is starting to get on the nerves of those Spocks in Silicon Valley?</p>
<p>Not that Google would admit this, instead simply saying it was feeling all warm and fuzzy and so decided to make some kids-let&#8217;s-put-on-a-show videos.</p>
<p>Wrote <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/cool-even-batman-uses-google.html">Robert Wong of Google Creative Lab</a> in a blog post, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Because while we&#8217;re proud of the innovations we&#8217;re making in search, we&#8217;re proudest of the things people use search to accomplish. In other words, the best search results don&#8217;t show up on a webpage&#8211;they show up in somebody&#8217;s life.</p>
<p>So in that spirit, we made a bunch of videos. There&#8217;s one about grandma dipping her toe into technology. One about friends taking a Kerouac inspired road trip. And yes, there&#8217;s even one about Bruce Wayne.</p></blockquote>

<p>BoomTown&#8211;fresh from <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091102/and-you-thought-ask-com-had-an-annoying-jingle-try-bing-goes-the-internet/">slapping around six graders caught in a Bing stupor</a> and commenting on the use of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/beware-google-bing-is-going-to-suck-your-blood-um-market-share-the-new-commercial/">restaurant-seeking vampires</a> by Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;is also not quite sure what to think of another new advertising campaign from an Internet giant.</p>
<p>This time, it is coming from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>With the tagline, &#8220;Come to Think of It, eBay,&#8221; the ads start today, according to a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704746304574505543900212118.html?mod=WSJ_hps_sections_tech">report in The Wall Street Journal</a>, to &#8220;boost its standing as a holiday shopping destination.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, the new marketing campaign in print, television and online&#8211;the first for the Web commerce giant in 18 months&#8211;has been crafted by San Francisco-based Goodby, Silverstein &#038; Partners, which has also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091019/yahoo-hires-goodby-as-top-creative-agency-for-its-ongoing-brand-revitalization/">just nabbed the lead role</a> in the $100 million advertising campaign by Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Goodby, owned by the Omnicom Group (OMC), is known for its innovative ideas and has done such memorable campaigns as the Slowsky turtles for Comcast (CMCSA), the weird folk of Emerald Nuts, owned by Diamond Foods (DMND)&#8211;as well as campaigns for tech companies such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Adobe Systems (ADBE) and Netflix (NFLX).</p>
<p>Still, Goodby might be getting a little too cute here, because &#8220;Come to Think of It&#8221; could remind consumers exactly how much they <em>have</em> forgotten about eBay. </p>
<p>At best, &#8220;come to think of it&#8221; is a double-edged sword.</p>
<p>In a good scenario: &#8220;<em>Come to think of it</em>, I really haven&#8217;t listened to my &#8216;Frampton Comes Alive&#8217; album in forever and I really want to hear it again.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a bad scenario: &#8220;An old girlfriend of mine is trying to friend me on Facebook&#8211;but, <em>come to think of it</em>, she was pretty freaky and I am very scared she found me again.&#8221;</p>
<p>You get the idea! Come to think of it: Play at home!</p>
<p>Actually, according to the Journal story, Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay&#8217;s marketplace operations, is pushing a different meaning of the phrase: &#8220;to shift the buyer perception of what eBay is today.&#8221;</p>
<p>The San Jose, Calif.-based company has to shift perceptions since it has seen its core marketplace business suffer, even as it has advertised less. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video of one of the new ads, as well as some past ones&#8211;all of which include an unusual amount of Broadway-style singing, dancing and egregiously fabulous frolicking for a company led by then-CEO Meg Whitman. </p>
<p>But, come to think of it, Meg: <em>Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with that!</em></p>
<p>And, I could not resist adding at the end Weird Al Yankovic&#8217;s funny parody song about eBay, with video clips synched.</p>

<p>Now, BoomTown likes a good jingle as much as anyone else, but this new one from Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service is sticking in my head like a piece of chewed gum.</p>
<p>Shot at Keith Valley Middle School in Horsham, Pa., it uses 400 very adorable sixth graders, who are dragooned into one very large &#8220;Bing Goes the Internet&#8221; dance&#8211;complete with logo wear. The kids rock, the advertising jingle not so much.</p>
<p>They are using the winning entry in the Bing jingle contest, by Jonathan Mann.</p>
<p>I must say, regretfully, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/beware-google-bing-is-going-to-suck-your-blood-um-market-share-the-new-commercial">stick with vampires</a>, Microsoft (MSFT).</p>

<p>In the commercial, below, titled &#8220;Vampire Decision Engine,&#8221; the software giant taps into vampire mania, playing into Halloween and the next chapter in the &#8220;Twilight&#8221; movie series, &#8220;New Moon,&#8221; set to debut in November.</p>
<p>In it, an Edward Cullen type, aided by a comely young woman, is looking for a place to &#8220;eat.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/search/archive/2009/10/28/it-s-a-full-moon-for-bing-today.aspx">According to Bing&#8217;s blog</a>, it&#8217;s one of a new series of television spots in its $100 million marketing campaign.</p>
<p>The creative is different from earlier commercials, which featured search-overloaded people spouting keywords.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our latest Bing advertisement is the first in a series of new commercials where we highlight specific ways Bing can help simplify your life and help you make decisions faster,&#8221; said Bing in its blog. </p>

<p>Here are the three new Apple (AAPL) commercials trying to take a smack at the launch of Windows 7 (MSFT), the new operating system software from Microsoft.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Get a Mac&#8221; advertising features the PC and Mac guys, as usual, but are quite a bit meaner than usual.</p>
<p>The first, titled &#8220;Broken Promises,&#8221; is a series of flashbacks to promises made about earlier Windows versions, complete with flip sunglasses.</p>
<p>The second, &#8220;Teeter Tottering,&#8221; has a Windows user switching over to Mac instead of upgrading from Windows XP. &#8220;I could stick with what I know, but what I know is pain and frustration,&#8221; she says. <em>Ouch!</em></p>
<p>The third commercial, called &#8220;PC News,&#8221; has the PC guy as a television anchor, talking to a reporter at the Windows 7 launch, to disastrous results.</p>

<p>For the last month or so, the Google homepage has played with the famous colored-letter logo by morphing it into a sci-fi in-joke and later adding another &#8220;l&#8221; to indicate the company&#8217;s 11th birthday.</p>
<p>The former&#8211;which included logos with alien spaceships and crop circles&#8211;was to honor writer H.G. Wells, author of &#8220;War of the Worlds&#8221; and other science fiction.</p>
<p>Now, a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi&#8211;the Indian leader whose 140th birthday anniversary is today&#8211;has become the &#8220;G&#8221; in the logo. (If you click on the image, it links to a search for his last name.)</p>
<p>While the impulse to do so seems hard to resist, I am not quite sure I much like Google (GOOG)&#8211;even with good intentions to educate and honor&#8211;using the image of one of the world&#8217;s great political leaders and peace advocates as a <em>letter</em> on a search service homepage, even if it will be seen worldwide. </p>
<p>(The poor Gosselin kids as a &#8220;G&#8221;? Oprah as an &#8220;O&#8221;? Liza Minelli as an &#8220;L&#8221;? I am totally down with that!)</p>

<p>Then again, I might be a tad grumpy on this issue since I also didn&#8217;t like Gandhi&#8217;s photo being used in that &#8220;Think Different&#8221; Apple (AAPL) marketing campaign more than a decade ago, which made him seem like some sort of advertising pitchman.</p>
<p>In any case, here&#8217;s the real thing to truly appreciate his impact on this world&#8211;Gandhi&#8217;s actual voice in his famous &#8220;One World&#8221; speech in 1931:</p>

<p>Well, it could happen, now that new CEO Tim Armstrong has fallen prey to the siren call of the AOL moniker, as have many&#8211;way too many&#8211;before him. </p>
<p>After years of seeing the company wander in the anything-but-the-AOL wilderness, Armstrong has decided to try to welcome the prodigal brand back home, even as he prepares to spin it off in November from Time Warner (TWX), trading on the New York Stock Exchange once again under the AOL stock ticker.</p>
<p>Thus, he has renamed the Platform A advertising unit AOL Advertising; changed its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080519/long-live-aols-people-networks-or-better-red-than-dead">unfortunately named People Networks</a>&#8211;which is made up of the communications and community properties&#8211;to AOL Communications; and done the same for its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090112/mediaglow-aol-glow-heres-the-entire-press-release-too">MediaGlow</a>, which is now under AOL Media.</p>
<p>There is also in the new AOL-centric universe: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090611/back-to-the-future-aol-adds-local-with-two-acquisitions-including-ceos-start-up/">AOL Local &#038; Mapping</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-patch-media-ceo-brod-now-heading-aols-venture-unit">AOL Ventures</a>, where all the bad acquisitions&#8211;like the Bebo social networking service&#8211;go to die.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/christine-dvd-coverjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/christine-dvd-coverjpg-210x300.jpg" alt="christine-dvd-coverjpg" title="christine-dvd-coverjpg" width="210" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-16514" /></a></p>
<p>While BoomTown admires Armstrong&#8217;s moxie, there is some dicey past history related to the AOL brand&#8211;which I lovingly call the &#8220;Christine&#8221; of the Internet industry&#8211;that he might want to be aware of:</p>
<p>* The start-up from which AOL first sprung was named Control Video Corp., which was founded to create a device that would allow users of the Atari 2600 videogame machine to download games over telephone lines.</p>
<p>* After it tanked, CVC was reborn in 1985 as Quantum Computer Services, which had offerings with names like Q-Link for Commodore computers and AppleLink for Apple (AAPL) Macintosh computers.</p>
<p>* In October 1989, the-AOL CEO, Steve Case, announced a company contest: What should Quantum rename its main online service?</p>
<p>The suggestions that came in—Crossroads, Explore and Infinity—sounded like drug treatment programs or new car brands.</p>
<p>Dismissing them all, Case offered a bland creation of his own: America Online, with a second option of Online America.</p>
<p>Other staffers understandably derided it as hokey, but Case essentially stuffed the ballot box and voted his suggestion the winner anyway.</p>
<p>Later, he would change it to just its initials, AOL.</p>
<p>* Case also hit on the idea of attaching voice files to the software with cheery little sound bites that would make the service feel homey.</p>
<p>The team settled on four phrases: &#8220;Welcome,&#8221; &#8220;You&#8217;ve got mail,&#8221; &#8220;File&#8217;s done,&#8221; and &#8220;Goodbye.&#8221;</p>
<p>A customer service representative named Karen Edwards had mentioned that her husband, Elwood, was a professional broadcaster, so for testing purposes, Case asked if Elwood might read those four phrases into a cassette tape.</p>
<p>The test tape was put into use, and Elwood Edwards, quite by chance, ended up having one of the most listened-to voices on the planet.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/aol_s397m4_diskjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/aol_s397m4_diskjpg-250x265.jpg" alt="aol_s397m4_diskjpg" title="aol_s397m4_diskjpg" width="250" height="265" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-16515" /></a></p>
<p>* In July 1993, AOL marketing chief Jan Brandt supersized the AOL brand by asking Case for permission to spend $250,000 on a direct-mail campaign.</p>
<p>She recalls him telling her it wouldn’t work. He told me in an interview he did no such thing.</p>
<p>Whatever the case, she got permission, and thus began the very low-tech marketing blitz of hundreds of millions of disks that would make AOL a household name—and annoyance.</p>
<p>There were even AOL disks flash-frozen in Omaha Steaks.</p>
<p>* In a 1993 meeting between Case and then-Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Bill Gates, annoyed by the innovative start-up, Gates famously told Case, &#8220;I can buy 20 percent of you or I can buy all of you. Or I can go into business myself and bury you.&#8221;</p>
<p>None of those ever came to pass, which is a reason to cheer the AOL brand. But&#8211;given Microsoft&#8217;s weak record in the online business&#8211;this is also not saying much.</p>
<p>* AOL&#8217;s brand has gone through a lot of name-calling, some of it quite deserved. Here are some: &#8220;The Online K-mart,&#8221; &#8220;America On Hold,&#8221; &#8220;The Giant Sucking Sound.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this one from its earliest days is my favorite: &#8220;The Cockroach of Cyberspace.&#8221;</p>
<p>* AOL did a lot of television commercials to hype the service, some of which you can see below. In one especially weird one, AOL hired Adam West of the goofy &#8220;Batman&#8221; television series.</p>
<p>* When AOL and Time Warner announced their merger on January 10, 2000, and renamed the company AOL Time Warner, AOL owned 55 percent and the combined market valuation was thought to be in the hundreds of billions.</p>
<p>Today, with Google (GOOG) <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090727/google-got-fail/">selling back its five percent stake in AOL</a>, AOL&#8217;s value has plummeted to about $6 billion. Time Warner is currently worth just over $33 billion.</p>

<p>* When Jon Miller&#8211;now digital head at News Corp. (NWS)  took over at AOL in mid-2002, after said merger failed miserably and the brand was taken off the corporate name, he spent some time visiting the company’s other divisions, and related an anecdote to me that he’d told them, to try to help move the relationships forward.</p>
<p>“Have you ever had your car towed in New York?” he said he’d ask executives in other divisions. “When your car gets towed, there’s a sign at the place where you go to pick it up that says, ‘The person behind this window did not tow your car. If you cooperate with them, you will get your car back quicker.’”</p>
<p>Tim, Time Warner is still waiting for Christine to be returned, so good luck with that rebranding!</p>

<p>At the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in May, in an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090710/elevation-partners-managing-director-roger-mcnamee-and-palm-chairman-and-ceo-jon-rubenstein-the-full-d7-session/">onstage interview, Palm&#8217;s major investor, Roger McNamee</a>, and I got into a minor tussle over the mirror on the back of the just-launched Pre smartphone and his assertion that the ladies in particular would <em>love</em> it.</p>
<p>Take that, reflectively-challenged Apple (AAPL) iPhone!</p>
<p>Here is a picture of McNamee at <strong>D7</strong>, talking about the mirror, and here&#8217;s the partial transcript of the exchange: </p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>MR. MCNAMEE: It has a mirror on the back. Remember, there has never been a smart phone designed for the needs of women before.</p>
<p>MS. SWISHER: Wait, wait. Women need mirrors more than, say, you?</p>
<p>MR. MCNAMEE: No, I am saying if you have the opportunity to stick a mirror on here, why wouldn’t you do it? If you are making it for 25- to 40-year-old nerds, you would have put a black thing back here. But we are sitting here going, “Look, it costs nothing. Why don&#8217;t we do it because you know what, people actually do need mirrors from time to time.”</p></blockquote>

<p>Later, I joked, “Nice, Roger. Perhaps someday it will include a blow dryer as well,&#8221; and McNamee tried mightily to poll the crowd to see if I was being too politically correct for questioning his&#8211;oh, that <em>crazy</em> Roger!&#8211;borderline kooky mirror-as-innovation theory.</p>
<p>All in good fun!</p>

<p>In the past, Yahoo has used killer lasers and giant afros and has even tried a dog rising from the dead to brand itself.</p>
<p>Also, of course, there was the yodeler. </p>
<p>That was in 2003, in a clever television commercial that featured Yahoo&#8217;s famous sound, as rendered by yodeling champ Taylor Marie Ware (by the way, if you click on the exclamation point on Yahoo&#8217;s homepage, it still emits an annoying male yodel).</p>
<p>Now, in what many sources at the company said is a major push, Yahoo (YHOO) is working on a massive plan to overhaul its brand in order to repair a damaged public image and focus consumers on what defines Yahoo.</p>
<p>The effort is being spearheaded by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/new-yahoo-management-structure-the-entire-memo/">newly installed Chief Marketing Officer Elisa Steele</a>.</p>
<p>To take on the task, she has hired both well-known brand consulting firm <a href="http://www.landor.com">Landor Associates</a> and an outside consultant named <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/penny-baldwin/6/aba/98a">Penny Baldwin</a>, who was a former top exec at brand and ad giant Young &#038; Rubicam.</p>
<p>Yahoo had formerly been using Ogilvy &#038; Mather and Siegel+Gale to work on strategic branding issues. Ogilvy is still working with Yahoo, sources said, but it is unclear if Siegel+Gale remains in the mix.</p>
<p>The new branding of Yahoo, said several people close to the situation, might be built around the latest relaunch of its main homepage design. </p>
<p>The important front-page redo had been delayed by CEO Carol Bartz when she took over in January and is now slated for the fall. </p>
<p>Many themes have been considered to depict Yahoo in the future, many along the lines of Yahoo still being a key hub destination for Internet users.</p>
<p>Those possible directions were discussed at a recent off-site meeting of Yahoo&#8217;s top execs, led by Steele, who ran through the tangled history of Yahoo&#8217;s marketing efforts and showed off some rough ideas for the future. </p>
<p>One motto considered, among several: Yahoo as &#8220;your home on the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whether it is going to be a sweet home or not is unclear, and does depend on exactly how much Yahoo is prepared to spend on this rebranding effort.</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT), for example, is in the midst of a $100 million marketing campaign around the recent relaunch of its Bing search service.</p>
<p>And Google (GOOG) has a brand that hardly needs any introduction&#8211;and on which it has spent very little marketing money&#8211;in that its name has become the verb that means &#8220;search&#8221; on the Web for most consumers.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/yahoo-purple-logojpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/yahoo-purple-logojpg.jpeg" alt="yahoo-purple-logojpg" title="yahoo-purple-logojpg" width="249" height="195" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-15003" /></a></p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s branding campaign will certainly have to be a big deal, given that it is one of the top Internet sites in the world and has massive name recognition. </p>
<p>And Bartz has been vocal about the importance of touting Yahoo as a well-known brand, even as she has said a lot internally and externally that she detests purple. </p>
<p>(That has long been Yahoo&#8217;s main color and also mantra, as in &#8220;bleed purple.&#8221;) </p>
<p>In an <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090618/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-the-full-d7-session-unexpurgated/?mod=ATD_search">onstage interview with me</a> at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in late May, I asked Bartz about the image of Yahoo being broken and how she would change that perception and revive its innovative spirit.</p>
<p>&#8220;The best way to change the perception is to do a good job and then talk about it,&#8221; she answered at <strong>D7</strong>. &#8220;We just have to get our story out there; we have to continue to appeal to the people that come to us, and frankly, at some point people get sick of having us as the underdog and say, &#8216;Thank God, Yahoo’s back.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, that could depend on how well its upcoming branding campaign works or not, which must also be based on the product and business strategy Bartz settles on in her rejiggering of Yahoo. </p>
<p>Tomorrow morning, Bartz will preside, along with Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock, at its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090618/the-yahoo-annual-meeting-circus-rolls-back-into-town-next-week-send-in-the-clowns">annual meeting in Silicon Valley</a>, although it is doubtful she will unveil any grand plan then for marketing or other major company strategies.</p>
<p>So, until the branding plans are unveiled, here are some of the more memorable Yahoo advertising efforts.</p>

<p>Launched about a year ago and armed with about $9 million in funding from Bessemer Venture Partners and Trinity Ventures, it has aims of moving into a range of other money-saving arenas too.</p>
<p>But today, it got a major boost in its existing business by inking a deal to be part of a huge national advertising campaign by T-Mobile aimed at boosting price awareness among consumers, an apt message for these econalyptic times.</p>
<p>The ads will start tonight in a big way on the finale of &#8220;American Idol&#8221; and will star Catherine Zeta-Jones, who asks consumers in high-profile television commercials if they want a &#8220;mobile makeover.&#8221; </p>
<p>Cue BillShrink, even if it does not end up recommending T-Mobile&#8217;s service.</p>
<p>It is the first time the mobile carrier has recommended a third-party Web site and one that is independent. T-Mobile must, given it is the No. 4 player and has to beat the bigger players with a curve ball.</p>
<p>While BillShrink does make money from referrals of vendors, BillShrink CEO Peter Pham said the service it delivers to consumers must remain unbiased to render the right comparison results to consumers.</p>
<p>I sat down and talked with Pham, a former Photobucket exec, about all this and also where BillShrink is headed next.</p>

<p>A few weeks ago, a group called the National Organization for Marriage put out a striking video commercial called &#8220;A Gathering Storm.&#8221;</p>
<p>In it, with a backdrop of menacing clouds, a clutch of people talk about their fears about allowing gay marriage.</p>
<p>It has garnered 576,319 views so far.</p>
<p>Now, a passel of celebrities on the Funny or Die comedy Web site has released a spoof version of the NOM commercial, called &#8220;A Gaythering Storm.&#8221; </p>
<p>It features a &#8220;gay rain army&#8221; and a giant gay repellent umbrella. <em>Oh, snap</em>.</p>
<p>It has 440,616 views, although it just went up yesterday.</p>

<p><em>Yipes</em>, because of being fact-based, I had to point out that the well-known-via-infomercials Psychic Friends Network shaman <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Cleo">turned out to be a bit of a fraud</a>, although she&#8217;s always entertaining, with her jaunty Jamaican accent (she was not, of course, from there).</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it got me thinking about how I would predict what would result from all the deal-making that is suddenly in the air, after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080915/dear-web-20-its-the-economy-stupid/">six months of ennui from the current economic downturn</a>.</p>
<p>While Silicon Valley has been less impacted than, say, New York, things have certainly been tightening up here, with layoffs at big companies and small ones and less frenetic activity than one had come to expect from Web 2.0.</p>
<p>But last week, the pulse seemed to quicken a little with the various rumors that have swirled around Twitter, the variety of controversies around Facebook and the nascent chit-chatting now taking place between Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Thus, with a third eye to the future, here&#8217;s my take on what could happen. <em>Big caveat</em>, though: Much of what follows is all my speculation and analysis and not based on any psychic feelings.</p>
<p><strong>TWITTER TWADDLE</strong></p>
<p>Last week, I did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090409/who-will-be-twitters-bestest-search-friend-google-and-microsoft-engage-in-yet-another-pick-me-face-off">rather long reported post on what was going on</a> after rumors broke out that Twitter was in &#8220;late-stage&#8221; acquisition negotiations with Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>While an imminent deal was not pending two weeks ago, I wrote that Twitter was indeed the apple of Google&#8217;s eye at the moment&#8211;specifically and now more so than ever, many sources tell me, of its Search Product VP Marissa Mayer&#8211;for some kind of search deal that could eventually lead to an acquisition. </p>
<p>But I also noted that Microsoft was also in the picture, vying for Twitter&#8217;s affections, and I doubted that Microsoft and Google would be the only ones interested in the hot-as-July-in-Alabama microblogging start-up.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the plus for Twitter: It&#8217;s on a hype rocket ship, its growth is also accelerating and it does not need money, since it just got a big slug of venture funding.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s also a minus and why I also predict that there are only two outcomes: a sale very soon or a major investment by one of its suitors.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/minicoopercabrio.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/minicoopercabrio-250x153.jpg" alt="minicoopercabrio" title="minicoopercabrio" width="250" height="153" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-12177" /></a></p>
<p>While I would love for its founders, including Biz Stone and CEO Evan Williams, to stick to their claims of remaining a “strong, profitable, independent company,” a cash offer of over $500 million or a cash-and-stock offer of slightly more will probably be enough to take them off the table, mostly because the getting might never get this good again.</p>
<p>That offer is most likely to come from Google, if I had to make a bet, which is well known for moving quickly when it sees a tasty treat it desires.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a shame, since once the start-up actually does enter these kinds of &#8220;late-stage&#8221; talks <em>for real</em>, some deserved shine will come right off Twitter&#8217;s cute little MINI convertible of a company.</p>
<p>Instead, Twitter might want to take a page from Facebook and let itself grow its own as it explores revenue options, while perhaps taking a large investment and striking a significant commercial deal with a strategic partner like Google or Microsoft.</p>
<p>Then, with a modicum of independence and the possibility of acquisition if it turned out it needed help, Twitter could forge its own destiny.</p>
<p>And wouldn&#8217;t that be nice if Google or Microsoft didn&#8217;t just gobble up every innovative thing they cannot seem to think of on their own?</p>
<p><strong>FACEBOOK FOLLIES</strong></p>
<p>I will be reporting more very soon on what&#8217;s been going on as the powerful social-networking site deals with its fast-growing pains&#8211;up to 200 million users now, which is about as impressive at it gets in the Internet space.</p>
<p>Not so impressive is the variety of high-profile management mishaps that have plagued the company of late&#8211;from its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/mark-zuckerberg-talks-about-facebook-terms-of-service-snafu">Terms of Service debacle</a> to its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090324/facebook-responds-to-redesign-feedback-sort-of">redesign rough road</a> to the way Facebook <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially">recently parted with CFO GIdeon Yu</a>.</p>
<p>To say Facebook treated Yu&#8211;a well-regarded figure in the tech sector, who had also raised an awful lot of funding for the start-up&#8211;with very little of the kind of grace he deserved and that it should have displayed is an understatement.</p>
<p>In the creation of a significant start-up, tensions inevitably flare and there is typically a lot of management turnover, which is natural, for a variety of reasons on all sides.</p>
<p>Why Facebook had to insecurely tout its stable financial state while backhandedly slapping Yu by saying it was in a search for a CFO with &#8220;public company experience&#8221;&#8211;Yu had enough public company experience to make that deeply insulting&#8211;was unclear, when it simply could have said he was moving on in the way most such partings are done.</p>
<p>The conflict between its public statement and an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090402/the-entire-facebook-goodbye-gideon-we-are-the-money-champions-memo/">internal memo I obtained</a> on Yu&#8217;s departure underscored the problem.</p>
<p>Insecure and way too focused on optics is probably an issue Facebook will have to deal with as it moves toward what the company hopes will be in IPO in 2010 or 2011. Rather than all the noise, its only goal should be shaping up its revenue and profit performance and, hopefully, building a cohesive management.</p>
<p>But does that mean current CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg will have to eventually step aside before a public offering and make way for a more experienced CEO type, as Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page did for Eric Schmidt, as some have suggested?</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/a_cool_cucumber.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/a_cool_cucumber-250x188.jpg" alt="a_cool_cucumber" title="a_cool_cucumber" width="250" height="188" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-12178" /></a></p>
<p>I predict not. Because, for all his careening from crisis to crisis of late, I have no question that Zuckerberg&#8211;who has fended off big-money acquisition attempts by big players with a cool-cucumberness that Twitter&#8217;s execs should study carefully&#8211;has every intention of riding Facebook to the very top&#8211;or even bottom.</p>
<p>Clearly modeling himself as a modern-day Steve Jobs (who was fired before triumphantly returning) or Bill Gates (a better comparison), Zuckerberg is a visionary techie who wants to style himself as a crack businessman too.</p>
<p>And with a lot of control over the fate of Facebook, he&#8217;s going to see his vision of Facebook and himself out.</p>
<p><strong>THE ODD COUPLE</strong></p>
<p>Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Oops, I mean can two once-bickering-over-a-hostile-takeover companies start talking without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Last week, the news, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090410/yahoos-bartz-and-microsofts-ballmer-finally-talking-about-search-and-advertising-partnership/">first reported here</a> Friday, that Yahoo was involved in preliminary talks with Microsoft about an extensive commercial advertising and search partnership&#8211;should have come as no surprise.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg" alt="oddcoup2" title="oddcoup2" width="239" height="196" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12183" /></a></p>
<p>After all, Yahoo and Microsoft are laggards in the lucrative search space, especially compared to the dominant Google, and they must somehow find a way to get along to get some traction in the marketplace.</p>
<p>But will they or will it be all Felix Unger and Oscar Madison battling until the end of time? While I loved that television show, and movie too, the Yahoo-Microsoft version is not riveting anymore to some.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am so bored with their not-coming-to-a-deal,&#8221; said one prominent exec, who was involved in the first go-round between the companies. &#8220;They need to make a deal, and if they don&#8217;t make a deal now, I will be both bored and in shock.&#8221;</p>
<p>That made me laugh out loud when I heard it. But it&#8217;s not funny, I know, because this is <em>serious stuff</em>! </p>
<p>Okay, then, seriously, this pair needs to come to some sort of partnership agreement like Miss Cleo needs a new reputation. </p>
<p>And, because I am a hopeful psychic, I predict they finally will, dropping all the emotion and history and realizing that they are wasting time and opportunity.</p>
<p>After all, while the future isn&#8217;t written, it can&#8211;a lot of the time&#8211;be both inevitable and utterly obvious.</p>

<p>In early discussions that began in the last several weeks that apparently included a face-to-face meeting last week, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer are finally talking about search and also advertising partnerships the companies could possibly strike, said several sources with knowledge of the situation.</p>
<p>According to a variety of sources, the talks between the pair (pictured here) and other execs at both companies are preliminary and wide-ranging, focused on what kind of commercial relationship Yahoo and Microsoft could have in the future.</p>
<p>But, cautioned sources close to Yahoo, the discussions are not about a renewed acquisition attempt by Microsoft and also might not result in any deal.</p>
<p>In any case, investors will likely cheer any kind of productive re-engagement between Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT), which has been lacking since a tense takeover effort by the software giant went south last year after an ugly battle that soured relations between the two companies.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s long past time,&#8221; said one outsider who had been told of the discussions. &#8220;With Google&#8217;s huge market share, these two need to work together and the problems they had should be put in the past.&#8221;</p>
<p>Both Yahoo and Microsoft declined to comment about the talks.</p>
<p>The change in leadership at Yahoo has helped, especially since Bartz&#8211;a Silicon Valley veteran with much deal experience&#8211;has none of the baggage from the takeover battle that previous management was carrying. </p>
<p>Microsoft seems to have also moved on, working on a massive redesign and relaunch of its search brand, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/a-sneak-peek-look-at-microsofts-new-kumo">under the internal name Kumo</a>, an effort that has included the hiring a whole lot of talent in the arena, mainly from Yahoo, in fact.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">That includes Qi Lu</a>, a former Yahoo tech star, who is leading all of Microsoft&#8217;s online efforts.</p>
<p>All of this means that a relatively green-field approach is now possible. </p>
<p>Thus, sources said, the talks include many scenarios, such as one in which the companies swap online advertising assets and deliver services to each other. </p>
<p>In that interesting plan, Yahoo might take over all of Microsoft&#8217;s display and premium advertising business to sell along with its own, while Microsoft would run the search advertising business for the pair.</p>
<p>Such a deal, which plays to each company&#8217;s strengths, would bind the two closely together, even though they still compete on many other fronts in the Internet space.</p>
<p>It also joins their forces, creating a sale that is much more attractive to advertisers and allows for better competition against search powerhouse Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>And while Ballmer has publicly said repeatedly that Microsoft is interested in buying either Yahoo&#8217;s search advertising business or search outright, sources close to Yahoo said the company is still determined to maintain control of the important search business and the massive traffic and critical data it provides.</p>
<p>That is especially true, given that Yahoo is the No. 2 player, with a much larger share than third-place Microsoft. According to recent surveys, for example, Google has a 63 percent share, while Yahoo has 20.6 percent and Microsoft eight percent.</p>
<p>But it is also in Yahoo&#8217;s interest to move fast, since its search traffic could be declining soon. </p>
<p><a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090409-707185.html">According to a story by Dow Jones yesterday</a>, citing a comScore (SCOR) report, recent toolbar distribution deals with computer makers Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Acer by Microsoft and Google respectively, will have a negative impact on Yahoo.</p>
<p>The story said that Yahoo &#8220;could lose up to 15% of its search traffic over the next 12-to-18 months after failing to renew deals with two computer makers, blows likely to hamper the Internet giant&#8217;s efforts to remain a viable competitor in search advertising.&#8221;</p>
<p>But even as he directs aggressive moves to put even more competitive pressure on Yahoo, Ballmer has been unusually deferential in giving Bartz a lot of time to come to the table.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, he cannot seem to stop talking about it either.</p>
<p>At a recent conference in mid-March, for example, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090319/live-from-new-york-microsoft-ceo-steve-ballmer">Ballmer said</a>: </p>
<p>&#8220;It’s really about getting the pooled volume, because you actually can improve your product faster if you have more users&#8230;.If you have more advertisers, you can improve the product as well&#8230;.There are returns to scale. And putting the scale together is valuable.”</p>
<p>But, in that interview, Ballmer also said that he had only talked to Bartz briefly since she was hired in January&#8211;congratulating her on the new job and mentioning that he&#8217;d love to talk about a deal.</p>
<p>And, at <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090225/ballmer-on-yahoo-blah-blah-blah">another meeting with Wall Street analysts earlier</a>, he went even further:</p>
<p>&#8220;You all know that I would like to figure out how to pool somehow Microsoft and Yahoo. I&#8217;m not talking about doing an acquisition, blah, blah, blah, back to search deals, blah, blah, blah, I don&#8217;t know if anything is going to happen. I&#8217;ll short-circuit the whole conversation, but the fact of the matter is, these two guys [Microsoft and Yahoo] should somehow figure out how to get together and create more competition for this guy [Google]. And I&#8217;m hoping perhaps that that&#8217;s a reasonable conversation to have with new management at Yahoo as Carol comes onboard.&#8221;</p>
<p>In contrast, Bartz has played her hand very close to the vest so far, at least publicly, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090116/is-the-gut-bone-connected-to-the-knee-jerk-bone">often discounting any effort to split up Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, at a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090304/bartz-who-do-you-take-me-for-jerry-yang/">Morgan Stanley (MS) tech conference in early March</a>, she said:</p>
<p>“I am not going to negotiate with my 55,000 favorite friends&#8230;.We’re going to negotiate as companies negotiate&#8211;and that’s privately. If something happens, you’ll know it then. Until then, there is no comment.”</p>
<p>(By the way, both Ballmer and Bartz have agreed to be interviewed onstage&#8211;separately, of course&#8211;at the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/d/speakers/"><strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a> in late May that <a href="http://www.walt.allthingsd.com">Walt Mossberg</a> and I run&#8211;so we will be sure to try to get one&#8211;not that they would give one!)</p>

<p>Deftly lacing in baseball and playing to cute but tired clich&eacute;s (did you hear&#8211;boys don&#8217;t like the color pink!), the main theme of heft value over too-thin hipness is really starting to kick in: That a person can get more computer for the money by buying a PC over a Mac.</p>
<p>Again, this segment slyly insults Apple (AAPL) as overpriced and undersized&#8211;&#8221;It&#8217;s a little too small,&#8221; says Jackson, while Lisa calls the Macs &#8220;pretty.&#8221; </p>
<p>The pair finally walk out of the store with a Sony (SNE) Vaio.</p>
<p>While I cannot blame Microsoft (MSFT) for sticking to the Apple-Is-for-Value-Ignorant-Elites meme, I still wish that the messaging would move on from price to more important things such as how the software and hardware perform together.</p>
<p>Cuz, frankly, <em>I like pretty</em>.</p>
