<p>Yet another goofy Silicon Valley name did not prevent Asana&#8211;the workplace productivity software start-up founded by former Facebookers Dustin Moskovitz and Justin Rosenstein&#8211;from nabbing $9 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.</p>
<p>The round, which was announced today, will be used to turbocharge Asana and its small team, who are aiming at the very dull and unexciting but very large and problematic workplace collaboration and communications software market.</p>
<p>In Sanskrit, &#8220;asana&#8221; means &#8220;sitting down&#8221; and refers to strong but relaxed postures in yoga&#8211;so presumably, Moskovitz and Rosenstein are trying to help frustrated workers achieve a digital form of nirvana.</p>
<p>Former Facebooker Matt Cohler, now at Benchmark, will have a seat on the Asana board. Asana had previously raised just over $1 million in an angel round, which included a spate of Silicon Valley bigwigs.</p>
<p>In an interview today, Rosenstein said that solving the &#8220;friction of communications&#8221; in the workplace by innovating via &#8220;information transparency&#8221; was Asana&#8217;s goal. </p>
<p>But, said Rosenstein, &#8220;We are not taking existing tools and porting it over the to Web&#8230;but rethinking how people can productively work together.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added: &#8220;We want to change the way you manage information and how you keep everyone on the same page&#8230;there are tons of misses here everyday in the workplace and it is death by 1,000 cuts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Moskovitz said he was always trying to solve such issues at Facebook, the social networking site he co-founded and where he once was CTO. </p>
<p>Ticking off a variety of workplace collaboration tools he employed, including some newer Web-based ones such as Yammer, Moskovitz said, &#8220;We could not find any easy solution, because there is not any one that answers all your issues.&#8221;</p>
<p>The pair said they had working product that was being used internally at the company, but would not say when one would be released publicly.</p>
<p>Finding one would obviously be a magic bullet, said Benchmark&#8217;s Cohler.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is a really big existing problem that no one has solved,&#8221; he said. </p>

<p>AOL has hired a pair of New York investment bankers, Morgan Stanley and Allen &#038; Co., to manage the sale of its ICQ instant-messaging unit.</p>
<p>Sources familiar with the situation said interest in buying the asset from two major non-U.S. companies prompted execs at the online service to put a process in place for a deal that will likely occur after AOL becomes an independent company in December.</p>
<p>AOL is set to spin itself off in less than a month from corporate owner Time Warner (TWX), and sources said selling off peripheral properties likes ICQ is part of becoming a smaller, more focused company.</p>
<p>Sources added that AOL now wants about $300 million for the property.</p>
<p>ICQ, which was once of the most explosive online communications tools, has lagged since AOL bought its popular software for $287 million in 1998, with another $125 million in earnouts for the team then. It was part of an Tel Aviv, Israel, start-up called Mirabilis. </p>
<p>While ICQ has about 40 million to 50 million unique monthly visitors and is the No. 1 messaging service in Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Israel and other small countries, its has less traction in the U.S. than bigger rival services from Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO) and Google (GOOG). In addition, Facebook and Twitter have also become major players in the status-update space.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s AIM service, in contrast, is quite strong, typically clocking as one of the top instant-messaging properties.</p>
<p>Said one source about the sale of ICQ, which is still based in Israel with about 100 employees and is moderately profitable: &#8220;AOL now has to be asking the hard questions.&#8221;</p>
<p>Those hard questions include massive layoffs, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091110/aol-small-layoff-today-a-voluntary-buyout-and-then-the-big-one">BoomTown reported last week will take place soon</a>. AOL then <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091112/aols-mass-layoffs-will-cost-200-million">formally acknowledged the cuts</a>, noting in a regulatory filing that Time Warner would take a $200 million charge for them.</p>
<p>Other AOL properties are also likely to be getting the once-over for sale, including its Bebo social networking site, which AOL bought for $850 million in 2008. But that is not imminent.</p>

<p>If spinning is an intense political skill, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is doing her very best at trying to create a silk purse out of a sow&#8217;s ear.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/11/10/whitman-on-skype/">Om Malik reports on GigaOm</a>, Whitman&#8211;who is trying to nab the Republican gubernatorial nomination in California&#8211;told a radio interviewer recently that &#8220;actually I think Skype will prove to be a good acquisition for eBay.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, good if you mean the $2.6 billion purchase of the Internet telephony company that never worked as Whitman had effusively promised in 2005.</p>
<p>She noted then: &#8220;By combining the two leading e-commerce franchises, eBay and PayPal, with the leader in Internet voice communications, we will create an extraordinarily powerful environment for business on the Net.&#8221;</p>
<p>That fabulous-sounding synergy did not happen, of course, eventually causing new eBay (EBAY) management to sell a huge chunk of Skype to an investor group.</p>
<p>Best of all, that sale included an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091104/i-love-the-smell-of-settlement-in-the-morning-skype-founders-set-to-get-10-percent-option-to-buy-three-percent-more-and-two-board-seats/">ugly and expensive legal fight over software technology licensing issues</a> with its co-founders, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, given that Whitman neglected in the competitive bidding to secure them properly.</p>
<p>That resulted in Zennström and Friis forcing eBay to include them just last week in the deal for a big chunk of Skype in exchange for those rights.</p>
<p>As the sick political joke goes: Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Whitman has not let the facts get in the way of a good story!</p>
<p>She kind of had to, I guess, responding to an allegation by one of her rivals in the race, tech entrepreneur Steve Poizner, who has tried to chip away at her blue-chip business reputation by attacking the Skype deal. </p>
<p>Whitman was right to defend a lot of other great acquisitions she made as leader at eBay, such as PayPal; and she can be, as she said in the interview, &#8220;proud of my tenure at eBay.&#8221;</p>
<p>She should be, given that she was key to building a huge and profitable company that is a clear Silicon Valley Internet icon. While eBay did start to creak near the end of her decade-long stint there, many of Whitman&#8217;s accomplishments are nonetheless impressive.</p>
<p>But not all of them and <em>definitely</em> not the Skype buy, so she might want to stop making laughable declarations like this one in the interview: </p>
<p>&#8220;You probably read that the company just sold about two-thirds of the interest in Skype to an investor group, kept a portion, and got almost all the money back, and I think Skype will be very effective.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, maybe so, but only because new management had to do clean-up and pay-up for her error, and new owners in charge of Skype could possibly better take advantage of what most consider a terrific property.</p>
<p>So, in the end, Whitman might be right.</p>
<p>And it might not even matter. In a recent poll, Whitman has pulled far ahead of ex-Congressman Tom Campbell, with 34 percent support from Republican primary voters compared to 13 percent for Campbell. Poizner clocks in third at six percent.</p>

<p>Silicon Valley legend and now VC Marc Andreessen was making the interview rounds after the settlement between the litigation-addled co-founders of Skype and all the various people they were suing <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091106/skype-soap-opera-finally-cancelled">was announced this morning</a>.</p>
<p>He has been tight-lipped until now, due to the morass of lawsuits.</p>
<p>But, as Andreessen told BoomTown in a phone interview about the aggressive legal tactics of Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis that resulted in them finally seizing a stake in the Internet telephony giant by suing him and many other Silicon Valley players:</p>
<p>&#8220;We did not take it personally. It&#8217;s a clean sheet of paper.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, it is actually a torn, stained and very worn out piece of paper, due to all the various machinations, but <em>bygones</em>!</p>
<p>Andreessen&#8211;who knows a thing or two about legal tussles, if you recall Netscape-Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;said the real point is that it is time to focus on the business of Skype rather than fighting over who controls Skype.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really good to have everyone lined up and rowing in the same direction. We have to capitalize on the opportunity, because Skype is poised for a new wave of growth,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;They have an amazing head of steam, because the logical way for voice and video communications to be conducted will be over the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p> Thus, Zennström and Friis now join the winning buyout group, Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, along with eBay, in owning Skype. </p>

<p>But Index Ventures, which was in, is&#8211;as Heidi Klum might say&#8211;<em>out</em>!</p>
<p>Under the terms of the agreement, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis will take a 14 percent stake in the company they founded and then sold to eBay (EBAY), which will include an undisclosed investment by them.</p>
<p>I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091104/i-love-the-smell-of-settlement-in-the-morning-skype-founders-set-to-get-10-percent-option-to-buy-three-percent-more-and-two-board-seats/">reported yesterday that the total was 13 percent</a>&#8211;10 percent for the rights to key Skype technology held by the co-founders and the option to invest $83 million for three percent more.</p>
<p>In exchange, the pair will give Skype software essential to its operation and drop their various lawsuits against eBay and Skype&#8217;s buyers.</p>
<p>As for Zennström and Friis&#8217;s egregious use of the courts to grab their 14 percent stake in Skype, litigation they waged after losing their bid to buy Skype back from eBay, Andreessen was being very politic.</p>
<p>&#8220;We love working with aggressive founders and are in favor of founders being involved in their companies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Great founders are not known for being shy and reserved. Look at Bill Gates. It&#8217;s not a question of personality, but of accomplishment.&#8221;</p>

<p>Noting that he had not worked with the pair before, Andreessen (pictured here) said, &#8220;We have a lot of respect for them. We think they&#8217;re geniuses.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, I queried, would he have used such tactics?</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a book club, it&#8217;s a super-serious, high-stakes game,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know; I&#8217;ve not been in the situation they&#8217;re in. If your goal in life is to avoid drama, this is probably the wrong industry for you.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps, but I told him that I doubted even a battle-hardened entrepreneur like Andreessen would use the courts in such a manner to achieve business goals. </p>
<p>To each his own, said Andreessen!</p>
<p>&#8220;One of our investing mottos is that we invest in strength, not lack of weakness,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The question is how big is the opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, apparently, it is big enough to overlook all the drama that has gone on. </p>
<p>Andreessen said he expects to be more involved at Skype&#8211;which, with his $50 million investment, is the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090612/andreessen-completes-raising-dough-for-his-300-million-venture-fund-let-the-investing-begin">biggest deal in his $300 million fund</a>&#8211;than other board members, noting different directors have different roles.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a big board of 23, as I had previously reported. Zennström and Friis are each getting a seat.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are going to be helpful,&#8221; Andreessen said about his fund&#8217;s role at Skype. &#8220;We&#8217;re a company picker, looking for those that have the greatest potential.&#8221;</p>

<p>Andreessen, ever the diplomat, made sure to add that that also means <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/volpi-and-index-ventures-out-of-skype-deal-the-lawsuit-happy-founder-twins-in/">doing business with Index</a>, the member of his Skype consortium that departed as Friis and Zennström (pictured here) entered, due to stark tensions between the two sides.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have a lot of respect for [Index partners Danny Rimer and Mike Volpi] and expect to work with them a lot in the future,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;In fact, I am talking to them today about two other deals.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, in Silicon Valley, the big wheel just keeps on turning.</p>

<p>The new MSN homepage debuts tonight and you would be completely correct in thinking the recipe Microsoft (MSFT) has cooked up to inform its design ethos&#8211;white, clean and hiply modern&#8211;has definite echoes of a certain longtime tech rival.</p>
<p>That would be Apple (AAPL), of course, with a big dollop of Twitter and Facebook tossed in, and finished off with a generous sprinkling of Microsoft&#8217;s new Bing search service.</p>
<p>For those who care: The MSN butterfly logo remains, although it appears to have lost a lot of weight too.</p>

<p>The launch is the first major upgrade of the MSN main page in&#8211;if you can believe it&#8211;a decade, part of an overhaul that the software giant has been doing throughout its money-losing online services division.</p>
<p>That has included the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-steve-ballmer/">launch of Bing in May</a>, which has been a success for Microsoft, adding a small amount of search market share and, more importantly, some much needed respect to its long-beleaguered consumer Web efforts.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s online execs are trying to keep up the innovation momentum with the new MSN redesign and&#8211;as you can see below from the various screenshots&#8211;it is a major shift for the portal site.</p>
<p>Together, MSN and Windows Live have about 100 million unique monthly visitors, putting Microsoft typically third behind Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The company hopes to do better with a fresher MSN, which is clearly aimed, first and foremost, at clearing up the clutter and link-heavy old MSN homepage.</p>
<p>MSN execs said the new main page has about half the &#8220;blue&#8221; links.</p>

<p>The top of the new page features a big image module, with inline video and drastically reduced topic areas&#8211;as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better">BoomTown has previously reported</a>&#8211;limited to news, sports, entertainment, money and lifestyle.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/msnn.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/msnn.jpg" alt="msnn" title="msnn" width="126" height="62" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-20217" /></a></p>
<p>Under that is a more customizable news module, to which feature tabs can also be added, such as for the World Series or&#8211;<em>prolonged sigh</em>&#8211;Balloon Boy coverage.</p>
<p>On the bottom left is a much-goosed local module that resolves to beefed-up local sites, which is right next another section featuring Bing top searches.</p>
<p>Bing is present in every part of the site now, with Microsoft stressing it and using its structured data to improve the consumer experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important for Bing search too, since MSN provides 45 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Communications modules are to the right, midpage and on the bottom. </p>
<p>Unlike AOL and Yahoo, which have added the ability to put third-party email on their homepages, only Hotmail is now available on the new MSN, although this is likely to change soon.</p>
<p>But perhaps the design element that will garner the most attention is the prominent placement of both Twitter and Facebook tabs in the bottom communications module, right next to one for Windows Live.</p>
<p>This allows users to update their status and get instant access to the status of friends and followers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to cut the clutter, while also giving users one convenient place to find what they need quickly,&#8221; said Scott Moore, executive producer of MSN in the U.S., its most important market, in an interview earlier today with me.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are overloaded with information and they wanted us to fix that, even if the service is not ours.&#8221;</p>
<p>The focus on Facebook and Twitter was simply due to intense user interest in the popular social networking sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has popped and Twitter was really growing,&#8221; said Moore, who noted that there was the possibility of adding other third-party apps in the future.</p>
<p>A heavy emphasis on apps was a key <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">strategy of Yahoo&#8217;s homepage redesign</a>, officially launched in late July, which SVP Tapan Bhat touted at an meeting with analysts last week as having increased page views and engagement.</p>
<p>Advertising on the page is perhaps the most conservative part, with units that remain largely as before.</p>
<p>The new MSN homepage will begin rolling out now, eventually reaching about 10 percent of users by early next year. After that, it is expected to become widely available to U.S. customers and then go worldwide.</p>

<p>The founders of Skype, via the two tech companies they control, Joost and Joltid, have hired <a href="http://www.sitrick.com/home.html">Sitrick &#038; Company</a>, headquartered in Los Angeles, while Index Ventures has tapped <a href="http://joelefrank.com/">Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher</a>, based in New York.</p>
<p>Both strategic communications and public relations firms are well known for employing some very sharp elbows and extremely tough talk when it is time for some creative corporate crisis management.</p>
<p>And both are familiar with tech issues, having worked on contentious issues related to companies such as Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO), CBS (CBS) online unit CNET, and others.</p>
<p>And there is plenty of bad blood to work with here.</p>
<p>Yesterday, in yet another legal volley, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091014/exclusive-skype-founders-keep-on-punching-file-injunction-against-volpi-and-index/">Joost and Joltid filed a motion for preliminary injunction</a> against former Joost CEO Michelangelo Volpi and Index Ventures, where Volpi now works as a partner.</p>
<p>They are asking that he not use knowledge or confidential information he got at the video start-up in current dealings with Skype.</p>
<p>Legal attacks have become the negotiating tool of choice from the founders of Skype, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, who were on the losing side of the $2 billion deal to buy the Internet telephony giant from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>Volpi is now a partner at London-based Index, which was one of the smaller players on the winning side of the bid, putting up $75 million.</p>
<p>To complicate things further, the innovative and entrepreneurial pair also own a company called Joltid, which has licensed key technology for Skype to eBay.</p>
<p>Joltid and eBay have already been fighting in court over that agreement, bickering back and forth about whether eBay violated the terms of that deal or not.</p>
<p>Via Joltid, Zennström and Friis also filed suit again against Skype and its owner, eBay, for copyright violations in the U.S.</p>
<p>For good measure, they added the winning buyout group, including Index, Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.</p>
<p>And both Joltid and Joost have also sued Volpi personally, as well as Index, making serious allegations about his behavior as Joost CEO.</p>
<p>This kind of mud-slinging could get even worse with the hiring of big PR firms.</p>
<p>Along with Frank and Sitrick, by the way, Silver Lake&#8211;which is the big player on the winning side&#8211;has hired Edelman&#8217;s crisis and issues management team.</p>
<p>Interestingly, several sources said, the various players have also been engaged in settlement talks, even as the lawsuits have piled up.</p>
<p>Coming to some agreement is clearly the best outcome, although it does not appear that the spate of lawsuits has yet derailed the eBay deal with the Silver Lake-led group, which could even close in the next several weeks.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone should be thinking ahead of the headlights,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;But right now, it seems to be all about emotions.&#8221;</p>

<p>Former Bebo CEO Joanna Shields and Shine Group Chairman and CEO Elisabeth Murdoch have formed a content start-up to produce across media platforms, both online and offline, with a focus on social engagement, according to sources.</p>
<p>The new venture, which does not have a name, is being financially backed both by Shine and by Shields, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090526/people-networks-president-joanna-shields-leaving-aol/">left AOL this summer</a> after running its community and communications division.</p>
<p>Shields <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080313/bebo-by-the-not-so-big-numbers/">engineered the sale of social networking site Bebo</a> to the Time Warner (TWX) online unit for $850 million in early 2008.</p>
<p>Sources said this new company, based in London, will invest, develop and partner to create a variety of content offerings that also incorporate interactive and social networking elements. It will also help the vast array of Shine content in interactive efforts.</p>
<p>Shields will be CEO of the start-up, which will operate under <a href="http://www.shine.tv">Shine</a>, an independent and private television production company with programming in 24 countries.</p>
<p>In the U.S., for example, its Reveille unit is responsible for such shows as &#8220;Ugly Betty&#8221; and &#8220;The Biggest Loser.&#8221; (Both of which are BoomTown faves.)</p>
<p>Shine&#8217;s fast growth has been spearheaded by Murdoch, who is the daughter of News Corp. (NWS) head Rupert Murdoch. </p>
<p>But Elisabeth Murdoch has struck out on her own in forming Shine, which already has shown a strong interactive bent for a television company.</p>
<p>The combination of television and Web content is an arena that many are once again jumping into, aiming at creating branded interactive content, fueled by advertising.</p>
<p>Former NBC Universal exec Ben Silverman&#8211;who sold Reveille to Murdoch, in fact&#8211;has recently left his programming job at the television network to start a similar kind of company with longtime entertainment and Internet kingpin Barry Diller of IAC/InteractiveCorp (IACI).</p>
<p>And former ABC programming and Yahoo exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090205/is-wonderwall-gonna-be-the-one-that-saves-msn">Lloyd Braun also runs a television and Internet production company</a> with longtime Hollywood player Gail Berman, including recently creating the Wonderwall celebrity news site for Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>In addition, Yahoo (YHOO) and a spate of small content start-ups, as well as big media companies, are all trying to figure out how to create and monetize content online in a multimedia effort that bridges all kinds of distribution vehicles and more deeply involves viewers.</p>
<p>Bebo was actually trying to do that too. Under Shields, it had been a pioneer in creating a variety of innovative online original content, including &#8220;KateModern&#8221; and &#8220;Sofia&#8217;s Diary.&#8221;</p>
<p>But new management at AOL, now headed by former Google (GOOG) exec Tim Armstrong, has sidelined Bebo to its new ventures division and is likely to try to sell it. Company execs at both Time Warner and AOL now say the purchase was a costly mistake.</p>
<p>That might be true, but it was clearly a financial coup for Shields&#8211;who has worked at both Google and RealNetworks (RNWK)&#8211;and Bebo investors. </p>
<p>And, given the track record of both Shields and Murdoch, it will be interesting to see what they come up with.</p>

<p>Yahoo is set to unveil a major marketing campaign to reset advertiser and consumer perception of the long-troubled company during <a href="http://www.advertisingweek.com/">Advertising Week in New York</a>, which starts a week from tomorrow.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources BoomTown has spoken to about the campaign, Yahoo (YHOO) is&#8211;at least with advertisers&#8211;going to focus on stressing the size and scale of the Internet giant. </p>
<p>The details of the plan will be made public Tuesday, Sept. 22, at a press conference.</p>
<p>It will take place immediately after a keynote speech&#8211;titled <a href="http://www.mixx-expo.com/agenda">&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s Consumer Revolution&#8230;Round II&#8221;</a>&#8211;that the company&#8217;s new CMO, Elisa Steele, is set to deliver on the second day of the Interactive Advertising Bureau&#8217;s MIXX conference. </p>
<p>MIXX is a two-day event, run by IAB, focused specifically on online advertising.</p>
<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is also going to be attending Advertising Week&#8211;during which all the major players in the advertising business gather in Manhattan for a series of events&#8211;for a plethora of meetings with big Yahoo clients.</p>
<p>It is likely she and several other senior Yahoo execs will be at the press conference, sources said.</p>
<p>That press event will also include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/yahoos-extreme-makeover-confirmed-with-the-hiring-of-a-new-global-marketing-exec/">Penny Baldwin</a>, a well-known industry exec Yahoo hired as its SVP of global integrated marketing and brand management in July. </p>
<p>The main message Bartz is set to deliver is that Yahoo is a powerhouse unlike any others on the Web when it comes to online display advertising.</p>
<p>And, in fact, Yahoo&#8211;despite all the internal and external turmoil it has undergone in recent years&#8211;remains one of the largest sites on the Internet, and is the top player in what is also called graphical advertising, as well as online media and communications.</p>
<p>&#8220;The whole push seems to be to remind people of vibrancy of the brand and exactly how huge its reach is,&#8221; said one person who has seen parts of the presentation. &#8220;It is less Yahoo is back than Yahoo has never left.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources also noted that Yahoo is likely to stick to its plan to push the idea of &#8220;your home on the Web&#8221; to consumers, which I had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/exclusive-yahoo-working-on-major-brand-overhaul-please-no-more-yodeling/">previously posted about earlier this summer</a>.</p>
<p>The idea of the Silicon Valley icon being the key hub destination for Internet users does dovetail with pushing its size to advertisers&#8211;major marketing messages that will also likely cost a pretty penny.</p>
<p>They will have to&#8211;Microsoft (MSFT) has been in the midst of a $100 million campaign for its new Bing search site and will likely spend more when it unveils updates to the service, dubbed Bing 2.0&#8211;within the next few weeks.</p>
<p>The company showed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090911/bing-2-0-sexy/">changes it showed to its own employees last week</a>, which was the subject of much tweeting on Twitter.</p>
<p>Yahoo will apparently give more specifics as to the spend for the marketing push at the press conference.</p>
<p>But, many sources said, the company is already out in the advertising market now, buying tens of millions of dollars in advertising online and offline to hawk Yahoo in print, on television and elsewhere.</p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s dramatic,&#8221; said one source about the marketing outlay.</p>
<p>Since she got to Yahoo, Bartz has continually stressed the need to promote Yahoo products and services more, including in an interview last week on CNBC (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090911/yahoos-bartz-8-facebooks-sandberg-22-googles-mayer-22-and-more-techies-makes-fortunes-50-most-powerful-women-list/">see that longish video here</a>).</p>
<p>And, in the July earnings call for Yahoo, Bartz said: &#8220;In addition, we&#8217;re hard at work on plans to reposition our most valuable asset: Yahoo&#8217;s brand. Our Q3 plans include an initial wave of incremental marketing spend which will increase substantially into Q4 and next year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also, in a Q&#038;A in the same call, she added more about the long-term nature of the spending on branding:</p>
<p>&#8220;The branding and our whole campaign of advertising is just starting; however you have to understand that this is an ongoing campaign so it&#8217;s not transient at least for the next year or so. We&#8217;re really going to move to reposition the Yahoo brand and Yahoo Company, so right now, consider that as cost that&#8217;s in the system.&#8221;</p>
<p>What Bartz and other Yahoo execs will likely stress less is search, due to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090729/microhoo-deal-finally-official-its-the-lite-version-but-is-it-still-tasty">search deal Yahoo struck in July with Microsoft</a> in which the software giant will take over the back-end technology and Yahoo will sell search ads for both companies.</p>
<p>The company will compete with both Microsoft and Google (GOOG) in garnering the search market still, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090309/microhoo-stop-them-before-they-publicly-negotiate-again">once the partnership is approved by regulators</a>, with Yahoo focusing on differentiating itself via innovative user interface, design, features and functionality. </p>

<p>Brad Garlinghouse&#8217;s appointment to a new job at AOL today <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090907/sticky-situation-of-the-month-ex-yahoo-communications-head-and-peanut-butter-manifesto-scribe-garlinghouse-to-helm-similar-unit-at-aol/">as its new communications czar</a> is yet another sign of an interesting trend for those keeping score of the comings and goings of top Internet execs. </p>
<p>Garlinghouse came to the Time Warner (TWX) online unit after a year-long break, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080626/more-on-yahoos-reorg-dietzen-is-garlinghouse-replacement/">preceded by six years at Yahoo</a> (YHOO).</p>
<p>As anyone who watches the digital space knows by now, this kind of management musical chairs is common and never-ending. </p>
<p>In fact, borrowing a quote by IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI) CEO and chairman <a href="http://d6.allthingsd.com/20080528/diller/">Barry Diller from an onstage interview</a> I did with him at the sixth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference and switching out Hollywood for Silicon Valley: &#8220;[It] is a community that&#8217;s so inbred, it&#8217;s a wonder the children have any teeth.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, given all the movement of late, this insider seat-switching seems more frantic than ever, as allegiances shift, competitors become friends and colleagues become rivals faster than you can tweet.</p>
<p>When he left Yahoo last summer, in fact, the digital chatter was that Garlinghouse would take a job either as a venture capitalist (he had been one once) or helming a start-up (that too, at Dialpad.com).</p>
<p>In fact, sources said, Garlinghouse had been considering two mobile gigs, but opted for helping to try to overhaul a troubled Web giant.</p>
<p>Fixing messes was the impetus of Owen Van Natta, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook">left a top job at social networking giant Facebook</a> in early 2008 and by the end of the year, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081110/van-natta-takes-playlist-ceo-job-with-new-investment-by-pittman">headed over to run Project Playlist</a>, a controversial online music-sharing service.</p>
<p>But then he had hightailed it by spring to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down">try his hand at reviving MySpace</a>, as its CEO. </p>
<p>His boss, News Corp. (NWS) digital head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head">Jon Miller, did the same</a>, getting the hook (unfairly to my mind) at AOL several years ago and then creating an investment firm with former MySpace head Ross Levinsohn.</p>
<p>The pair considered being part of a bid to oust Yahoo management in 2008.</p>
<p>Miller&#8217;s freedom lasted only until he got an offer that he presumably could not refuse from News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch recently. (Full disclosure: News Corp. owns Dow Jones, which owns this site.)</p>
<p>The list goes on, chock full of ex-Yahoos, in fact.</p>
<p>Its one-time COO, Dan Rosensweig, left the company in 2006, for example, and joined the well-known private-equity firm, Quadrangle Group.</p>
<p>But, soon enough, he was scooped up by Activision Blizzard (ATVI) to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090322/exclusive-dan-rosensweig-steps-up-to-takes-his-licks-as-guitar-hero-frontman">run its Guitar Hero division</a>.</p>
<p>Yahoo Network head Jeff Weiner also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced">departed from the Internet giant, in mid-2008</a>, for a stint at two VC firms.</p>
<p>He landed at LinkedIn, the business-networking service <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/weiner-nabs-ceo-job-at-linkedin-hoffman-to-executive-chairman-plus-the-official-press-release">where he was named CEO in late June</a>.</p>
<p>Greg Coleman ran <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070829/hey-kids-lets-put-on-a-yahoo-reorg/">Yahoo ad sales until mid-2007</a> before <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/aol-ad-head-clarizio-out-being-replaced-by-former-yahoo-sales-head-coleman/">taking a job at AOL earlier this year</a>, which he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come">lost after it got new management</a> soon after.</p>
<p>At Yahoo, Coleman sparked with former advertising sales head Wenda Harris Millard, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed/">whom he ousted</a>. She <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080701/martha-stewart-living-omnimedias-wenda-harris-millard-speaks/">went onto Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO) and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart">left there this spring</a> for the Media Link consultancy.</p>
<p>Presto! She <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">is now helping MySpace&#8217;s Van Natta</a> fix the social networking site&#8217;s ad business.</p>
<p>Current Yahoo U.S. advertising head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080909/yahoo-brings-in-drum-roll-please-a-former-microsoft-exec-to-head-ad-sales">Joanne Bradford actually came from Microsoft</a> last summer, via her own short visit to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080313/microsoft-exec-sprints-over-to-spot-runner/">troubled ad start-up SpotRunner</a>.</p>
<p>Former Yahoo search techie <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/former-yahoo-tech-star-qi-lu-likely-to-be-named-microsofts-digital-head-by-next-week">Qi Lu now runs digital for Microsoft</a> (MSFT), along with a big gang of ex-Yahoo techies he has recruited.</p>
<p>And Scott Moore is even better at the switcheroo. He was at Microsoft running MSN U.S. content, switched to Yahoo as its media poobah, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081103/yahoos-scott-moore-and-al-warms-to-depart-this-week/">left last year to consider a start-up</a> and then <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090130/exclusive-former-yahoo-scott-moore-heads-back-to-microsoft-as">headed back to Microsoft as head of U.S. content</a> this year.</p>
<p>But former Google (GOOG) execs have also been busy shuttling hither and yon, mostly to innovative start-ups.</p>
<p>Of course, many find refuge at Facebook (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080304/sheryl-sandberg-will-become-coo-of-facebook">COO Sheryl Sandberg</a>, PR major domo Elliot Schrage and many more) and Twitter (GC  Alexander Macgillivray and COO Dick Costolo).</p>
<p>Recent departures&#8211;such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090407/top-google-exec-cassidy-to-accel-partners-as-ceo-in-residence-a-boomtown-interview-plus-press-release/">Sukhinder Singh Cassidy</a>, who landed at Accel Partners for now&#8211;are also likely to find new homes soon enough.</p>
<p>And, of course, there&#8217;s always Garlinghouse&#8217;s new boss, former Google ad head Tim Armstrong, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090312/aol-gets-a-new-ceo-google-sales-boss-tim-armstrong">who took over at AOL earlier this year</a>.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll skip former Joost CEO and former Cisco (CSCO) exec Mike Volpi (who is now a VC); former Netscape Communications/short-term VC/ex-banker/current-for-now CBS (CBS) digital head Quincy Smith; and Joanna Shields, who has worked at Real Networks (RNWK), Google and Bebo (which was bought by AOL)&#8211;for now.</p>

<p>In the ongoing game of musical chairs among top managers at Internet companies, former Yahoo exec Brad Garlinghouse&#8211;famous for his controversial <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080627/a-garlinghouse-memorial-boomtown-decodes-the-infamous-peanut-butter-manifesto/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which correctly chided the Internet giant for becoming so lugubrious several years ago&#8211;is taking a job at AOL very similar to the one he left at Yahoo last year.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse, 38, has been named president of Internet and mobile communications at AOL, putting him in charge of the New York-based Time Warner (TWX) online unit&#8217;s powerful email and instant-messaging properties, including ICQ and AIM.</p>
<p>He has only been in talks with AOL&#8211;which used Spencer Stuart&#8217;s Internet-top-exec-finder-in-chief Jim Citrin&#8211;for a few weeks, in a deal that came together quickly, he and the company said.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse, a longtime Web entrepreneur and exec, had reportedly been considering a number of start-up and venture-related jobs since he left Yahoo last summer after six years there. </p>
<p>Sources said he was seriously considering becoming the CEO of a mobile firm.</p>
<p>He was most recently at Silver Lake Partners, as an &#8220;in-house senior advisor,&#8221; the private equity firm that recently bought the Skype Internet telephony firm for $1.9 billion. Garlinghouse also reportedly helped work on that deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really exciting to be to able to rebuild and revitalize an industry giant,&#8221; said Garlinghouse in an interview with BoomTown earlier today. &#8220;I make no bones that these [properties] are in need of that&#8230;but there is also a huge opportunity to do something cool.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse has to hurry. Despite being among the top communications players online&#8211;a group that also includes Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) and, more recently, Google (GOOG)&#8211;AOL has lost relevance with key audiences, even as social networking properties like Facebook and the microblogging service, Twitter, have innovated in the communications space.</p>
<p>The hiring of Garlinghouse, well known in Silicon Valley circles, is meant to counter that. </p>
<p>He will head up AOL&#8217;s operations from its Mountain View, Calif., campus&#8211;which is also the former HQ of AOL-acquired Netscape Communications&#8211;where, said AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, Garlinghouse will &#8220;be CEO of Silicon Valley for us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Between all its various properties, AOL has several hundred employees in the Northern California area.</p>
<p>Armstrong said AOL&#8211;which was founded 25 years ago on the East Coast and has tried and failed many times to get a true foothold in the West&#8211;thinks having an important player at the center of the tech industry is critical as it moves to spin off as an independent company by the end of the year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a triple play in getting a great executive, who is a master in the communications on the Web and who is well known out there,&#8221; said Armstrong. &#8220;Brad is our senior AOL manager there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Along with running all of AOL&#8217;s communications properties, Garlinghouse will inherit some of its community properties, although AOL&#8217;s Bebo social networking unit&#8211;now considered to be an overpriced acquisition error&#8211;now resides in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-patch-media-ceo-brod-now-heading-aols-venture-unit">ventures unit, headed by Jon Brod</a>.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse will also be aiding Brod, said Armstrong, with AOL on the lookout for acquisition opportunities in communications and other arenas.</p>
<p>While Garlinghouse declined to be specific about what would pique his buying interest, he was responsible for such big Yahoo deals as its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">$350 million purchase of Zimbra</a> in the fall of 2007. </p>
<p>He was also key to bringing both Oddpost, which is at the heart of Yahoo&#8217;s email offering, and the popular Flickr photosharing service to Yahoo.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse said he has admired what Twitter and Facebook have done, but that they were not destroying traditional online communications, pioneered by AOL, as some assert.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a vibrant segment and this just means there are a lot of opportunities to enable integration,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think of it as an expansion of online communications and I hope AOL can do more collaboration and partnerships.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse also has to watch AOL&#8217;s basic products like email, which was recently passed by Google’s Gmail as the No. 3 email service in the U.S. Yahoo Mail is the top email, while Microsoft&#8217;s Hotmail is second.</p>
<p>How much Garlinghouse can do will depend on the future financial strength of AOL. Its advertising business has been hit hard in the econalpyse, with hopes it will return before its money-generating access business continues its slow decline. </p>
<p>Armstrong is now in the midst of looking over AOL&#8217;s cost structure and employee base, which most expect will eventually result in another round of layoffs and cuts. </p>
<p>He has been busy creating a different strategy for the company since he arrived earlier this year, as well as hiring (and firing) top execs to create a new management structure. </p>
<p>Now, that includes Garlinghouse.</p>

<p>Garlinghouse spent nearly six years at Yahoo! where he most recently served as SVP of Communications and Communities. <p>Well, it could happen, now that new CEO Tim Armstrong has fallen prey to the siren call of the AOL moniker, as have many&#8211;way too many&#8211;before him. </p>
<p>After years of seeing the company wander in the anything-but-the-AOL wilderness, Armstrong has decided to try to welcome the prodigal brand back home, even as he prepares to spin it off in November from Time Warner (TWX), trading on the New York Stock Exchange once again under the AOL stock ticker.</p>
<p>Thus, he has renamed the Platform A advertising unit AOL Advertising; changed its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080519/long-live-aols-people-networks-or-better-red-than-dead">unfortunately named People Networks</a>&#8211;which is made up of the communications and community properties&#8211;to AOL Communications; and done the same for its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090112/mediaglow-aol-glow-heres-the-entire-press-release-too">MediaGlow</a>, which is now under AOL Media.</p>
<p>There is also in the new AOL-centric universe: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090611/back-to-the-future-aol-adds-local-with-two-acquisitions-including-ceos-start-up/">AOL Local &#038; Mapping</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-patch-media-ceo-brod-now-heading-aols-venture-unit">AOL Ventures</a>, where all the bad acquisitions&#8211;like the Bebo social networking service&#8211;go to die.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/christine-dvd-coverjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/christine-dvd-coverjpg-210x300.jpg" alt="christine-dvd-coverjpg" title="christine-dvd-coverjpg" width="210" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-16514" /></a></p>
<p>While BoomTown admires Armstrong&#8217;s moxie, there is some dicey past history related to the AOL brand&#8211;which I lovingly call the &#8220;Christine&#8221; of the Internet industry&#8211;that he might want to be aware of:</p>
<p>* The start-up from which AOL first sprung was named Control Video Corp., which was founded to create a device that would allow users of the Atari 2600 videogame machine to download games over telephone lines.</p>
<p>* After it tanked, CVC was reborn in 1985 as Quantum Computer Services, which had offerings with names like Q-Link for Commodore computers and AppleLink for Apple (AAPL) Macintosh computers.</p>
<p>* In October 1989, the-AOL CEO, Steve Case, announced a company contest: What should Quantum rename its main online service?</p>
<p>The suggestions that came in—Crossroads, Explore and Infinity—sounded like drug treatment programs or new car brands.</p>
<p>Dismissing them all, Case offered a bland creation of his own: America Online, with a second option of Online America.</p>
<p>Other staffers understandably derided it as hokey, but Case essentially stuffed the ballot box and voted his suggestion the winner anyway.</p>
<p>Later, he would change it to just its initials, AOL.</p>
<p>* Case also hit on the idea of attaching voice files to the software with cheery little sound bites that would make the service feel homey.</p>
<p>The team settled on four phrases: &#8220;Welcome,&#8221; &#8220;You&#8217;ve got mail,&#8221; &#8220;File&#8217;s done,&#8221; and &#8220;Goodbye.&#8221;</p>
<p>A customer service representative named Karen Edwards had mentioned that her husband, Elwood, was a professional broadcaster, so for testing purposes, Case asked if Elwood might read those four phrases into a cassette tape.</p>
<p>The test tape was put into use, and Elwood Edwards, quite by chance, ended up having one of the most listened-to voices on the planet.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/aol_s397m4_diskjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/aol_s397m4_diskjpg-250x265.jpg" alt="aol_s397m4_diskjpg" title="aol_s397m4_diskjpg" width="250" height="265" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-16515" /></a></p>
<p>* In July 1993, AOL marketing chief Jan Brandt supersized the AOL brand by asking Case for permission to spend $250,000 on a direct-mail campaign.</p>
<p>She recalls him telling her it wouldn’t work. He told me in an interview he did no such thing.</p>
<p>Whatever the case, she got permission, and thus began the very low-tech marketing blitz of hundreds of millions of disks that would make AOL a household name—and annoyance.</p>
<p>There were even AOL disks flash-frozen in Omaha Steaks.</p>
<p>* In a 1993 meeting between Case and then-Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Bill Gates, annoyed by the innovative start-up, Gates famously told Case, &#8220;I can buy 20 percent of you or I can buy all of you. Or I can go into business myself and bury you.&#8221;</p>
<p>None of those ever came to pass, which is a reason to cheer the AOL brand. But&#8211;given Microsoft&#8217;s weak record in the online business&#8211;this is also not saying much.</p>
<p>* AOL&#8217;s brand has gone through a lot of name-calling, some of it quite deserved. Here are some: &#8220;The Online K-mart,&#8221; &#8220;America On Hold,&#8221; &#8220;The Giant Sucking Sound.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this one from its earliest days is my favorite: &#8220;The Cockroach of Cyberspace.&#8221;</p>
<p>* AOL did a lot of television commercials to hype the service, some of which you can see below. In one especially weird one, AOL hired Adam West of the goofy &#8220;Batman&#8221; television series.</p>
<p>* When AOL and Time Warner announced their merger on January 10, 2000, and renamed the company AOL Time Warner, AOL owned 55 percent and the combined market valuation was thought to be in the hundreds of billions.</p>
<p>Today, with Google (GOOG) <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090727/google-got-fail/">selling back its five percent stake in AOL</a>, AOL&#8217;s value has plummeted to about $6 billion. Time Warner is currently worth just over $33 billion.</p>

<p>* When Jon Miller&#8211;now digital head at News Corp. (NWS)  took over at AOL in mid-2002, after said merger failed miserably and the brand was taken off the corporate name, he spent some time visiting the company’s other divisions, and related an anecdote to me that he’d told them, to try to help move the relationships forward.</p>
<p>“Have you ever had your car towed in New York?” he said he’d ask executives in other divisions. “When your car gets towed, there’s a sign at the place where you go to pick it up that says, ‘The person behind this window did not tow your car. If you cooperate with them, you will get your car back quicker.’”</p>
<p>Tim, Time Warner is still waiting for Christine to be returned, so good luck with that rebranding!</p>

<p>After his 100-day VisionQuest to figure out what to do at AOL, Tim Armstrong is in a chattier mood.</p>
<p>The former Google (GOOG) advertising exec took over the perpetually troubled Internet icon in the spring and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/tim-armstrongs-100-day-vision-quest-nearing-end-party-in-dulles-and-then-what">has been on a worldwide tour of its offices</a>, meeting employees and trying to get a lay of the land of where the Time Warner (TWX) unit has been and where it should be going.</p>
<p>So, BoomTown did not waste a New York&#8211;where AOL has its HQ, in fact&#8211;minute in getting on the horn with Armstrong to finally hear his take.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s not a lot of new stuff to reveal, of course, beyond what Armstrong has already said over the last months about AOL&#8217;s new direction.</p>
<p>That would be a spinoff in November, a focus on advertising, content, local, communications and starting a venture unit.</p>
<p>Here is the interview, which we did by phone on Friday:</p>
<p><strong>BoomTown:</strong> So, what&#8217;s your overall assessment of AOL and its prospects after your 100-day look-see?</p>
<p><strong>Armstrong:</strong> Well, to start, I feel good about the company and where we are at. What I mean by that is that I feel good about what the company&#8217;s opportunities are.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> What were you most surprised by on the downside and on the upside?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> I think basically things were about 50 percent more negative and 50 percent more positive than I thought.</p>
<p>On the negative side, it has mostly been a crisis of confidence. I think people at AOL had started to believe the business press that it was just an incremental part of the Internet.</p>
<p>On the plus side, there are very surprising assets, which have been neglected, but are amazing. Such as Winamp, ICQ and the really incredible engineering talent all over the world&#8211;in India, Tel Aviv, Dublin.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> What was the one thing you took away as the most important thing to do first?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> Well, it is important for everyone to understand that AOL should not be in every business out there. That there are a limited set of things we have to commit to do better than anyone else.</p>
<p>Over the years, for example, there were so many acquisitions. But a lot of them became businesses that we were not fully committed to, and we have to start making clear choices and letting the rest go.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> Such as?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> Well, we are going to be focused on scaling content, advertising, email, messaging and local, but making it easier and less complicated.</p>
<p>In the ad business, for example, we have 100 products. I think we can be much more successful with less.</p>
<p>And we have different publishing platforms all over the world, just as the Web has become about having centralized technology. We have been missing the core characteristic of the Internet, which is about one platform.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> Talk a little about what you are doing in the content space. AOL, via its MediaGlow unit, has been creating a lot of small blogs in a variety of categories, but also has big sites.</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> We are going to do both things. One thing I would say is that we have a content strategy that spans the content we create, the content we are buying and partnering on, and I think we have clear plans in terms of investing in each area.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> What about communications?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> I think you are very quickly going to see us cleaning up email products. And in the messaging space, one of the things we will be doing is integrating it more with other AOL properties.</p>
<p>Historically, the management has looked at messaging as how to drive monetization and it has been a bad experience. I think that it more important as a recirculation tool.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> How realistic were you about AOL when you arrived compared to now?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> I went into this job with my eyes wide open and I am not saying now that I have answers to every problem.</p>
<p>But I have been trying to do what it takes to solve the big ones, such as recruiting and building a team. I have also spent a lot of time finding talent in the company already here. </p>
<p>And, I have worked with people outside the company. I consider my job being whatever it takes and educate myself.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> So what&#8217;s next, besides the already announced spinoff? Is AOL still an acquisition target? </p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> I look at it in two different ways. </p>
<p>We need to stay very laser-focused on strategy and execution, as well as innovation.</p>
<p>And we have to build this company as a powerful independent one. </p>
<p>AOL has been looked at as a target for a long time, where AOL has been the prey. It might also change in that we can be the hunter too.</p>
<p><strong>B:</strong> What about the online advertising and search deal with Google?</p>
<p><strong>A:</strong> Well, it ends in December of 2010, as everyone knows.</p>
<p>I have to say that the partnership has been extremely successful on many fronts.</p>
<p>They have been our partners for eight years and there has been a lot of momentum.</p>
<p>But we also have to think about how to continue that for the right outcome for what we need in future, because AOL has changed since the partnership started.</p>
<p>Of course, we will look at other partners, but we also really know we have a great relationship that exists with a partner that is also going to be listening to us about what we need.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not often these days that you get any kind of public offering in the market for tech companies&#8211;so a lot of people in Silicon Valley and elsewhere are looking at the fall spinoff of AOL very carefully.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because, even though AOL is widely considered to be an also-ran by Silicon Valley (same as it ever was, actually, even at the height of its power in the late 1990s), many are very interested in serving on its board.</p>
<p>According to many sources, exactly who will be on what will likely be a 10-12 member board of directors for the company is up for grabs, once it decouples from owner Time Warner (TWX).</p>
<p>Thus, AOL, with Time Warner&#8217;s top execs&#8217; involvement, sources said, has compiled a list of about 70 possible candidates&#8211;picked, suggested and self-nominated&#8211;and is now proceeding to vet them and begin the process of asking people to serve.</p>
<p>It should not be a tough sell. After all, despite its recent struggles, AOL remains one of the major Internet sites, with massive traffic, several well-known products and a large advertising business.</p>
<p>In addition, people seem inclined to see what kind of overhaul new CEO and Chairman Tim Armstrong can pull off and whether the former Google (GOOG) exec can work some magic.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/aol-spin-off-approved-last-night-by-time-warner-board-heres-the-inside-details-not-in-the-press-release">formulating plans for what stays and what goes in the company</a> as he tries to shine up the apple&#8211;or put lipstick on the pig, depending on your perspective&#8211;for investor consumption.</p>
<p>That includes keeping the access business, which many thought would be sold off, and putting many of the companies it has recently acquired&#8211;including its pricey Bebo social networking site&#8211;in a separate ventures unit, which will try to attract outside investment or sell off assets.</p>
<p>The strategy will focus AOL on several key areas, including media, local, “scaled” advertising and communications.</p>

<p>The jury is out on how successful Armstrong will be at innovating at AOL. But with almost zero IPO action and little prospect of any in the near future, it&#8217;s about the only such game in town as it moves to what is likely to be an October spinoff.</p>
<p>To help Armstrong sort through the choices, BoomTown is now compiling a suggestion list of fancy names I would recommend, and will do another post on that next, along with a general idea of what stays and what goes.</p>
<p>Until then, here are the broad outlines of what AOL needs to look for in a board:</p>
<p>One media mogul, one consumer electronics exec, one entrepreneur, one publishing exec, one Time Warner exec, one social networking exec, one advertising exec, one entertainment/Hollywood exec, one telecom/mobile exec, one consumer brand exec, one Internet mogul, and, of course, Armstrong.</p>
<p>And, as a definite requirement, given that there are way too many on way too many Internet company boards: No venture capitalists need apply.</p>

<p>BoomTown has had some good leaked internal memos from Yahoo, but I have never enjoyed one quite as much as this one from newly installed Yahoo PR head Eric Brown, who started today.</p>
<p>While it is clear that Yahoo (YHOO) has had its troubles in understanding and offering social-networking products to its users, Brown certainly knows how to share.</p>
<p>Yahoo could use some of that DNA!</p>
<p>New Yahoo CMO Elisa Steele named Brown, a colleague from her former job at NetApp (NTAP), as SVP of global communications at the Internet giant in June.</p>
<p>He was the VP of corporate relations at the data storage company, on whose board Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has also served. Before that, he was at Adaptec (ADPT).</p>
<p>Brown is filling a slot left when former Yahoo PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash left Yahoo in February</a>. She was briefly replaced by her deputy, Brad Williams, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/yahoo-hires-adobe-vet-lamkin-to-run-communications-and-communities-unit-as-dietzen-moves-to-strategy-post/">who was laid off from Yahoo in a recent round of cuts</a>.</p>
<p>Like Steele, he is yet another executive from the business software arena to be hired under Bartz, who also comes from that background.  <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/liveblogging-the-yahoo-earnings-conference-call-it-depends-on-your-definition-of-what-wow-is/">Bartz also hired Jeff Russakow from Symantec</a> (SYMC), which makes antivirus software and other security, for the post of Customer Advocacy SVP.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s whole <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/exclusive-yahoo-working-on-major-brand-overhaul-please-no-more-yodeling/">marketing organization is undergoing a rejiggering</a> under Steele, including a major brand overhaul. Along with Brown, she also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/yahoos-extreme-makeover-confirmed-with-the-hiring-of-a-new-global-marketing-exec">recently hired Penny Baldwin</a> as SVP of global integrated marketing and brand management.</p>
<p>Brown will be taking on Yahoo&#8217;s image-making, a task that has been a challenge over the last two years as the Silicon Valley icon has been buffeted by a series of external and internal challenges.</p>
<p>But Bartz has publicly talked about the need to now focus attention on Yahoo&#8217;s many assets and strengths.</p>
<p>In fact, in an <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090618/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-the-full-d7-session-unexpurgated">onstage interview with me at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a> in late May, Bartz said: “The best way to change the perception is to do a good job and then talk about it.&#8221;</p>
<p>From this memo, Brown seems like he knows how to do <em>that</em>. </p>
<p>And since he likes writers Kate Chopin and David Sedaris at the same time, it is obvious that Brown and I are on the path to become besties.</p>
<p>(Potential deal-breaker: I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain.)</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the memo&#8211;based on a form that sources tell me all Yahoo PR folks fill out in a getting-to-know-you questionnaire, but don&#8217;t make public&#8211;in which Brown says hello to his new team:</p>

I&#8217;ve seen other people whose phobias are the same as mine: spiders and heights; enjoyed how many of you put Paris as your favorite place on Earth; and am impressed with how many amazing books this group has collectively read. </p>
<p>I must also admit to being slightly intimidated by all of you who put &#8220;bad grammar&#8221; as a pet peeve and will triple check this email to avoid any grammar infractions&#8230;</p>
<p>I know I have a Thursday group meeting with you, but thought the least I could do on day one is return the favor and complete my own handbook profile. So here goes&#8230;</p>
<p>Date I joined Yahoo!: today (6 July 2009), though I did spend two days at the senior leaders meeting in mid-June and thank all of you who were there for the warm welcome in Half Moon Bay.</p>
<p>What I do here: lead a team of amazing, intelligent, motivated people who put Yahoo! in the best light possible and tell our story in compelling ways that make users and advertisers around the world want to embrace Yahoo! heartily.</p>
<p>Where I grew up: Warsaw, Virginia&#8211;a tiny town about 90 minutes from Richmond, Virginia and 150 minutes from Washington, D.C. For those of you who are American history buffs, Warsaw is about 10 minutes from the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and 15 minutes from the birthplace of George Washington.</p>
<p>Where I live now: Sunnyvale, California. Can&#8217;t beat the commute.</p>
<p>College: William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. BA in English. Loved lit crit. Senior honors thesis was on post-WWII masculinity in American society as represented by the works of Norman Mailer.</p>
<p>My first job: an internship for the U.S. Navy (my parents&#8217; employer—they were civilians) analyzing different process flow diagram software packages for a team creating warship defense systems. For the rest of high school and college, I had LOTS more fun as a waiter at dive restaurant called The Stagecoach. The food was ghastly; the people were amazing.</p>
<p>What I did before Yahoo!: I ran comms (PR, social media, internal comms, and exec comms) for NetApp, managing a global team of about 60+ people doing amazing enterprise and B2B work in 30+ companies worldwide. I&#8217;m very excited to learn &#8220;consumer&#8221; from all of you&#8211;and equally excited to share experiences from my almost 20 years in the business in return.</p>
<p>What I do when I&#8217;m not here: I love travel (had a super 3 days in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney two weekends ago), cooking (yes, seriously—cooking is very therapeutic and relaxing for me), and reading (though I haven&#8217;t picked up a Norman Mailer since my undergrad days).</p>
<p>If the Internet didn&#8217;t exist, what I&#8217;d be doing right now: teaching literature to high school students. I believe that at some point in my life, I have to return to society what it has given me. And I&#8217;d be a better teacher than firefighter or doctor!</p>
<p>Favorite place on Earth: Paris. I try to go there 3 or 4 times a year and have a couple of very close friends who are kind enough to let me crash with them. Second favorite is Hong Kong.</p>
<p>Proudest accomplishment: professionally&#8211;being part of the &#8220;inner counsel circle&#8221; for NetApp execs on a variety of comms and marketing issues (which I hope to be here at Yahoo! as well); personally&#8211;being a good friend, partner, and family member.</p>
<p>Favorite Yahoo! moment: there have only been 3 days of them so far—and all have been great. I felt very honored and lucky to be part of the Half Moon Bay leadership summit&#8211;and meeting people from all over Yahoo! there was inspiring.</p>
<p>Favorite book: someone who majored in literature can&#8217;t just name one, so I’ll split them into categories&#8230;Favorite works of literature: The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Favorite work that kindled my imagination: The Hobbit by Tolkien. Favorite works that make me laugh: anything by David Sedaris (the man is wicked funny).</p>
<p>Favorite movie: two&#8211;Moulin Rouge and Orlando&#8211;both visually stunning.</p>
<p>My first car: a Buick Skyhawk in a horrible shade of brown&#8211;the thing was so ratty that I had to add oil to it every other day so it wouldn&#8217;t break down&#8211;it made its last hurrah on a cross-country trip from Virginia to California and made it over the Rocky Mountains without any issues but then was quite unhappy crossing the Sierra Nevada range.</p>
<p>My next vacation destination: somehow I think I&#8217;m going to be very busy for the next few months so I&#8217;m not planning any big trips, though I have told a friend I&#8217;ll attend his 50th birthday party in Munich and from there I&#8217;ll try to drive to Vienna for a few days.</p>
<p>My hidden talent: navigating subway systems when everyone else insists on taking a taxi (the exception: Tokyo&#8211;because it is just too darned crowded).</p>
<p>My favorite online video: I like online videos to catch up on things that MTV no longer carries&#8211;like videos from Gus Gus (though I only see one of their videos on Yahoo! Music&#8230;)</p>
<p>My guiltiest pleasure: ice cream in bed with the Kindle (yes, just as Elisa put in her email)&#8211;the ice cream HAS to be Ben &#038; Jerry’s (LOVE being on this floor with the conference room names!) and my favorite is Peach Cobbler.</p>
<p>I have an intense fear of: spiders and heights&#8211;I even had a spider vacuum for a while so I didn’t have to come near &#8216;em or smash &#8216;em&#8211;but then I was scared they’d survive the suction and electric shock and crawl back somewhere&#8211;so now they&#8217;re routinely smashed.</p>
<p>My biggest pet peeve: beating around the bush&#8211;tell me what you want me to know because I&#8217;m not telepathic and say it without a lot of metaphor or subtlety&#8211;if you really want me to know something, please make it crystal clear.</p>
<p>My best celebrity encounter: dinner with friends in the outdoor section of the Restaurant du Palais Royal in Paris on a gorgeous May evening&#8211;next to us was Tom Ford (at the height of his Gucci power)&#8211;I have never wanted to NOT eat so much in my life.</p>
<p>Something few people know about me: I abhor cava (sorry to those of you in Spain)&#8211;champagne is my favorite drink on Earth, prosecco will do in a pinch, and New World sparklings are hit and miss&#8211;but I universally detest cava.</p>
<p>Best for advice for working with me (yes, a little changed from what you all submitted): honesty really IS the best policy&#8211;unless I&#8217;m having a bad hair day in which case please just don&#8217;t say anything about that at all.</p>

<p>The New York-based Patch is a platform that does deeply localized coverage of communities about a range of topics, from announcements to news to events to obituaries. It is aimed at competing with local newspapers and other media.</p>
<p>In another interesting twist and blast from the past, Boston-based Going was funded&#8211;its last investment was $5 million in mid-2007&#8211;by two Web 1.0 portal execs, George Bell of Excite and Bob Davis of Lycos.</p>
<p>Both are now venture capitalists&#8211;Bell at General Catalyst Partners and Davis an Highand Capital Partners.</p>
<p>Going, which was originally called HeyLetsGo.com, connects its users with events and each other in a variety of big cities, such as San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and New York.</p>
<p>The focus on local will round out Armstrong&#8217;s new push for innovation at AOL, the final piece of his <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090407/tim-armstrong-starts-at-aol-his-entire-100-day-countdown-to-magic-memo">ongoing 100-day evaluation of the much-beleaguered company</a>. </p>
<p>Armstrong has been busy in that time in making <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/aol-spin-off-approved-last-night-by-time-warner-board-heres-the-inside-details-not-in-the-press-release">massive changes to the structure of AOL</a>, sweeping aside its current set-up almost completely as it prepares for a spinoff from Time Warner (TWX).</p>
<p>That spinoff was announced recently and will result in AOL becoming a standalone company.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s new business strategy under Armstrong includes keeping its longtime access business, which many thought would be sold off, and putting many of the companies it has recently acquired&#8211;including its pricey Bebo social-networking site&#8211;in a separate ventures unit, which will try to attract outside investment.</p>
<p>The strategy will focus AOL on several key areas, including access, media/content, “scaled” advertising and communications, and now, local.</p>
<p>Local is also a big focus for players like Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) again. Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz specifically mentioned adding more community news, especially about local sports, to its offerings, in an <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/d7-interview-carol-bartz/">onstage interview two weeks ago</a> with me at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference.</p>

<p>Our vision isn’t just about optimizing what we have&#8211;it’s about overhauling how we approach this space, drawing on our legacy of connecting communities and our long history of organization through DMOZ. It’s about taking one of the most disaggregated experiences on the Web today and making it truly quick and easy for consumers to find the local information they need.</p>
<p>Today, we’re announcing two acquisitions that will enable us to better serve audiences by providing experiences that are highly focused on users’ own neighborhoods&#8211;Patch and Going.</p>
<p>Patch.com was built to provide local towns with a robust and interactive platform to publish news and information, with full-time journalists for each town covering government affairs, education issues, and community events.  One of the AOLers in our All Hands meeting on May 29 asked what our plan is to help towns, like his, where the local newspaper has gone out of business. Patch is an acquisition that may eventually help that town. Under the leadership of co-founder and CEO Jon Brod, Patch has been able to launch five initial town sites since February and has just announced four additional communities. Moreover, Patch has already received over 230 user requests for “Patches” spanning 39 states and 12 countries.   </p>
<p>The second acquisition is a small company located in Boston&#8211;Going. Going has developed a local events platform to discover and share information about things to do in a number of leading cities across the country. Under the leadership of CEO Evan Schumacher, Going has launched sites in 30 cities&#8211;including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami&#8211;and provides users with RSVP tools and advertisers with self-service event advertising.  </p>
<p>On a personal note, I was an early investor in Patch and committed significant dollars to the vision of improving local communities with deeper online information, accountability through journalism, and a platform for communicating.  In discussing our local strategy, AOL and Time Warner looked at Patch as a possible acquisition and I recused myself from that process. Both Patch and Going offer local experiences, content and self-service applications for consumers and advertisers. </p>

<p>The acquisitions extend AOL’s network of local services, the largest online local network,* reaching more than 54 million total unique visitors per month.** Both acquisitions also leverage a consumer and marketplace trend toward greater consumption of news and information online.</p>
<p>A recent survey by the Pew Research Center for the People &#038; the Press found that more people now say they get most of their news from online sources than from traditional newspapers (40% vs. 35%).***</p>
<p>In addition, local searches grew 58% in 2008 year over year, while overall searches climbed just 21%, according to research conducted by the Yellow Pages Association in March 2009.</p>
<p>Local advertising (online and offline) represents an approximately $103 billion market (approximately 39% of total U.S. ad spending), according to Borrell Associates in 2009.</p>
<p>Founded in December 2007 and headquartered in New York, Patch combines localized, professional journalism with community contribution and a platform that puts all town assets online – in effect, digitizing the community. Patch, which expects to be available in a dozen communities by the end of the year, currently has “Patches” in five communities with four more in development.</p>
