Microsoft digital head Qi Lu took to the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit conference this morning, where he confirmed a "strategic" deal with Facebook and Twitter to integrate real-time information into Microsoft's Bing search service.

BoomTown broke the news of those deals earlier today.

Top Microsoft exec Yusuf Mehdi did a demo of the new tweet-powered search for Twitter; the Facebook integration is to come later.

Microsoft digital head Qi Lu took to the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit conference this morning, where he confirmed a “strategic” deal with both Facebook and Twitter to integrate real-time information into Microsoft’s Bing search service.

BoomTown broke news of those twin deals earlier today.

Bing’s Twitter integration in beta form is now live here (see an image of it below; click on it to make it larger).

Facebook’s integration will come later, said Microsoft (MSFT).

Before announcing the deal, Lu–who is a quintessential techie–first went a bit deep into the weeds to talk about “how we think about search.”

Said Lu: “To start with, we think about search holistically…it’s about user intent. What it amounts to is that you are trying to build a mind reader.”

Top MSN exec Yusuf Mehdi then bounded onstage to talk about the deals with Twitter and Facebook and do a demo, which was what the audience gathered in San Francisco wanted to hear about and see.

“If today’s search is about getting to the UPS or the FedEx site, tomorrow is much more complicated,” said Mehdi, who described the deals as “strategic.”

Google (GOOG) is also in talks with both Twitter and Facebook about a similar arrangement, but Microsoft’s move was a clear one-upsmanship with its search rival.

And what Mehdi showed was impressive, with the ability to sort tweets in a number of ways.

Such information in search will obviously improve results.

Lu gave few specific monetary or operational details of the service–such as if Facebook and Twitter get a cut of its search advertising revenue or if Microsoft will archive the status updates–mostly focusing on Twitter, since it is first to roll out.

“This is just the beginning,” said Lu. “The Twitter corpus…is still evolving and emerging.”

Added Lu at the end: “Give us a try!”

Here is Microsoft’s press announcement on the deals with two of Silicon Valley’s innovation hotshots:

This morning at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Qi Lu, President of Microsoft’s Online Services Division is announcing a new beta feature that enables people to easily search Twitter’s real-time information feed directly in Bing. This new feature helps people make better decisions and more fully understand Twitter conversations by collecting, analyzing and uniquely presenting real-time Twitter content.

More specifically, the new Twitter developments in Bing include:

A real-time index of the Tweets that match your search queries in results. This feature makes it easier to follow what’s going on by reducing the amount of duplicates, spam, and adult content.

Giving you the option to rank tweets either by most recent or by “best match,” where we consider a Tweeter’s popularity, interestingness of the tweet, and other indicators of quality and trustworthiness.

Providing the top links shared on Twitter around your specific search query by showcasing a few of the most relevant tweets. Additionally, Bing automatically expands those small URLs (like bit.ly) to enable you to understand what people are tweeting about. Instead of showing standard search result captions, we select 2 top tweets to give users a glimpse of the sentiment around the shared link.

You can try out the new Bing Twitter search beta here momentarily or learn more about it at the Bing blog. Please note that this is a U.S. only feature at this time.

Facebook Partnership

As part of his on-stage discussion at the summit, Dr. Lu is also announcing a global partnership with Facebook that will bring public Facebook status updates to Bing search results. The experience will be available at a later date.

For many years now, one of our regular attendees at the D: All Things Digital conference has been award-winning movie and television director, producer and writer Barry Sonnenfeld, who is–as it turns out–a not-so-closeted geek in his spare time.

(He also appeared onstage in 2006 at D4 in an interview with Walt Mossberg, which you can see here.)

In fact, the man behind movies like “Men in Black” and TV shows like “Pushing Daisies” (and who likes to sport a Stetson and cowboy boots 24/7) does a gadget review column for Esquire magazine called “The Digital Man.”

Now he is branching out to a vlog about his geek passions on Crackle, which will appear every two weeks from wherever he is–either from his homes in East Hampton, N.Y. or Telluride, Colo., or from movie or TV sets.

And, compared to the cinéma vérité style of BoomTown (translation: shaky filming and bad sound), Sonnenfeld’s vlogs are pretty high quality, although they are not too overdone as those from Hollywood types always are, and it’s hard not to admire the editorial use of a martini.

Here’s his intro video vlog below, as well as one about a cross-country trip Sonnenfeld and his “analog” dog, named Lucky, took in a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO (super high output) and another about his experience helping his wife, Sweetie, cook for some film industry friends using the Traeger Professional Wood Pellet Grill.

Next week: A chain saw, although I hope Sonnenfeld will go light on the martinis for that demo.

What hath the Flip digital video camera wrought?

Well, for one, getting to see a major Silicon Valley tech exec do duck calls online, that’s what.

Cisco (CSCO) PR guy John Earnhardt, who is obviously studying technique from BoomTown’s shaky-cam video style, caught company CEO and Chairman John Chambers quacking away in his office.

And, of course, he then proceeded to capture the moment on the popular digital video recorder, which was made by the small and innovative San Francisco-based Pure Digital that Cisco bought for $590 million in March.

Wrote Earnhardt on the company blog:

“I was sitting at my desk a few minutes ago when I heard a duck call echoing down the corridor. Then, that inimitable John Chambers laughter. With my trusty Flip Mino HD video camera in hand I strolled into Chambers office to capture the duck call for you, our loyal readers. His lesson was brief, but it is very clear that he is a man of many talents.”

Well, that’s the Cisco PR spin on it, at least! (My spin: Chambers is one wacky dude.)

Cisco is now calling for duck call competitors to challenge Chambers on its blog or at its PR YouTube channel.

The best duck call gets a free Flip Mino CD from Chambers.

Here’s the video of Chambers in Daffy Duck mode (and below it is the full video of the demo that Pure Digital did at this year’s seventh D: All Things Digital conference):

Immersion (IMMR) is the innovative company behind haptic, or touch feedback, technology for some videogame consoles and mobile phones.

At the seventh D: All Things Digital conference, Immersion demoed its TouchSense for touchscreen keyboards and Immersive Messaging.

With TouchSense, the user is not only supposed to be able to get haptic feedback, but can also feel the virtual keys.

Immersive Messaging will also use haptic feedback, as well as gesture recognition, to send messages that employ physical senses rather than text.

See Walt Mossberg and the Immersion guys trade digital hearts. No, really, they did.

Also, I “twiddled.” Don’t ask.

Continuing our posting of the full sessions, in the order of their presentation at the D: All Things Digital conference in late May, here is the demo by Pure Digital, maker of the Flip digital camera.

Which is, as many readers of this column know, a key BoomTown accessory–with which I make my wobbly videos annoying various tech mandarins in interviews.

San Francisco-based Pure Digital debuted its first innovative Flip at a previous D conference and was recently sold to Cisco (CSCO).

This time, CEO Jonathan Kaplan showed off new personal “channels” that allow you to share videos with others, like friends and family.

Did we have demos of new products at the seventh D: All Things Digital conference?

Oh, yes we did!

First up, legendary entrepreneur Philippe Kahn’s new company, Fullpower, which has developed the innovative MotionX Recognition Engine.

In the full demo below, Kahn shows Walt Mossberg and me a technology that studies how the body moves, as opposed to reacting to it.

The company is developing accelerometer-based hardware and software intended to do for motion and gesture what speech recognition did for speech.

There is also some jogging around the D7 audience–thankfully, not by Kahn, Walt or lazy, lazy BoomTown.

Here is the full video of the Fullpower demo:

Incredibly, this is the seventh year of the D: All Things Digital conference.

We feel very lucky to get here, especially in the midst of what our own site's Digital Daily scribe, John Paczkowski, has so perfectly dubbed the "econalypse."

Ironically, Walt Mossberg and I planned to launch the very first conference in the middle of the last major downturn for tech, in 2001. But, in the carnage of the Web 1.0 meltdown, we actually held off for two years, with our first D gathering taking place in 2003.

Well, we're still going--making the same long-term bet that the digital revolution will keep rolling as we did at D1. Here's our lineup for D7.

Incredibly, this is the seventh year of the D: All Things Digital conference.

We feel very lucky to get here, especially in the midst of what our own site’s Digital Daily scribe, John Paczkowski, has so perfectly dubbed the “econalypse.”

Ironically, Walt Mossberg and I planned to launch the very first conference in the middle of the last major downturn for tech, in 2001. But, in the carnage of the Web 1.0 meltdown, we actually held off for two years, with our first D gathering taking place in 2003.

It’s been a real winning streak since then for D, due in large part to our great speakers–such as Microsoft (MSFT) icon Bill Gates and Apple (AAPL) legend Steve Jobs.

Both have been onstage many times over the years, including a historic interview the pair of tech titans did together in 2007 at D5.

Other amazing speakers have included: Howard Stringer of Sony (SNE), Barry Diller of InterActiveCorp (IACI), legendary director George Lucas, Time Warner (TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes, Jeff Bezos of Amazon (AMZN), former eBay (EBAY) CEO Meg Whitman, News Corp. (NWS) head Rupert Murdoch, Microsoft head Steve Ballmer, Walt Disney (DIS) honcho Bob Iger, Bobby Kotick of Activision Blizzard (ATVI), CBS (CBS) CEO Les Moonves, Democratic and Republican pols like former Vice President Al Gore and Sen. John McCain, all the leadership of Google (GOOG) and many, many more.

We have had a lot of great moments onstage with all these tech and media players over the years, to be sure, with interviews ranging from the funny to the sublime to the truly disastrous.

But, like the digital industry and the innovation our conference focuses on, we also like to lean forward to try to figure out what the Next Big Thing is around the corner, whether it comes from Silicon Valley or not.

That’s why we’re kicking off our conference on May 26 with two of the founders of Twitter–Biz Stone and Evan Williams–who are riding high on tech’s latest hot thing, which might turn out to be either a rocket ship or a shooting star.

They’ll be followed up over the next two days by a plethora of interesting players, from the leaders of several major mobile companies to content execs hit hard by fast-moving digital forces to a new Internet leader like Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is trying to turn around one of the Web’s great icons from its more recent lackluster path.

And, as we always do, we will be featuring a spate of demos too, trying to see if we can unearth that next next thing.

In the past, the D stage has seen the debut of start-up products like Sling Media’s Slingbox, Aliph’s Jawbone and Pure Digital’s Flip, all of which have gone onto glory. And also some, like Palm’s Foleo, which did not.

While not everyone can attend D, our crack staff is committed to bringing all the action from this year’s conference to readers of the All Things Digital site via up-to-the-minute blogs, photos, videos, tweets, digs and more. We’ll also, as soon as we can, post the videos of each of the onstage sessions, in their entirety.

Until it all kicks off, here is the list of speakers, below, in alphabetical order, who will be appearing at 2009’s D7 conference:

Irving Azoff | CEO of Ticketmaster Entertainment (TKTM)

There was no doubt, given the continuing economic collapse and all the joy that brings, that Demo09 was going to be a much tamped-down and sober affair this year.

But there are still a lot of interesting start-ups being featured in the main ballroom and demo “pit,” such as a cool “touch book” offering, a strange hooking-up-in-a-bar smartphone app and a plethora of ideas that obviously got their inspiration from the iPhone from Apple (AAPL).

As in: touch, swipe, interact! (Which is the official BoomTown motto, in point of fact.)

Demo Executive Producer Chris Shipley is still running the show. But VentureBeat founder and Editor-in-Chief Matt Marshall will take over the longtime, semiannual conference–where several dozen start-ups strut their stuff in front of an industry crowd–in 2010.

Here is the video I did of the event, which was held in Palm Desert, Calif., and ends today. It includes serial entrepreneur Mitch Kapor, PR guy Brian Solis and All Things Digital Co-Executive Editor Walt Mossberg.

This past weekend, BoomTown revved up the Mini and headed out in the pouring rain to a Peet’s Coffee in Fremont, Calif., to the exact spot where Demo Executive Producer Chris Shipley proposed that VentureBeat founder and Editor-in-Chief Matt Marshall take over the longtime, semiannual conference where several dozen start-ups strut their stuff in front of an industry crowd.

Shipley will still be running the show at Demo09 starting Sunday in Palm Desert, as well as the next Demo in the fall, with Marshall working alongside until he takes over fully in 2010.

(Shipley will remain on the advisory board, but will mostly be focusing on her consulting firm, Guidewire Group. She has run Demo for 13 years.)

Shipley and Marshall talked about it all in a video interview, as well as the fake controversy ginned up last year by champion ginner-upper TechCrunch–which, big surprise, runs a competing conference–about Demo’s longtime (and transparent) practice of charging a large fee to presenters.

“It was a false argument created as a marketing tool by a competitor,” said Shipley flatly.

What will be more pertinent and interesting in the Marshall era will be the integration between his VentureBeat Web site and the IDG-owned Demo conference, which could be a good way to take the conference and make it a year-round community of interest.

“We want to turn from a five-day affair into an ongoing conversation 365 days a year,” said Marshall, who also said the Demo model still works well. “It’s not that broken, so we will be tweaking it more than fixing it.”

Here’s the video of the pair chit-chatting about it all (sorry about the coffeeshop noise, but it was very festive):

An unusual Israeli-Palestinian joint venture start-up, which makes a cloud-based Web operating system letting users access their desktops from any computer with an Internet connection, is alleging a trademark violation by Microsoft in its new $300 million advertising campaign.

G.ho.st, which stands for “Global Hosted Operating System,” is claiming it has a pending trademark registration for the tagline “no walls.”

G.ho.st has used the phrase for almost 18 months and is alleging that it pertains specifically to operating systems (as shown in the screenshot here).

In a letter sent earlier this week to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and many others, which BoomTown has obtained, G.ho.st CEO Zvi Schreiber claims that the software giant has violated G.ho.st’s pending trademark for the ad phrase “no walls” and asks Microsoft (MSFT) to remove it from the company’s marketing materials.

Microsoft’s advertising campaign, which launched this month and had a rocky start with poorly received commercials featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft Founder Bill Gates, uses the taglines “Imagine No Walls” and “Life Without Walls” to tout its Vista operating system. (See a screenshot of one example below; click on it to make it larger.)

G.ho.st, which is hosted by Amazon (AMZN), is yet another of many attempts to make cloud computing real and is competing to grab customers from the software-based Windows powerhouse.

A Microsoft spokesman, in an email to me, dismissed G.ho.st’s claims.

He said:

“We are aware of their concerns and believe their claims have no merit. We are not aware that Ghost has any trademark registrations or other rights that would be infringed by our ‘Life Without Walls’ campaign. To our knowledge, the right they have asserted, namely, a U.S. ‘registered trademark application,’ in the phrase ‘No Walls,’ does not exist.

“To our knowledge, Ghost has no trademark registrations or other rights in the phrase ‘No Walls.’ Even if they did, they cannot prevent others from using the words ‘no walls’ together in a sentence or in a descriptive manner in ad copy. Nor can they claim ownership in word ‘wall’ or the idea of a wall. The tagline for Microsoft’s new ad campaign is ‘Life Without Walls’–a slogan that, taken in its entirety, is not confusingly similar to Ghost’s purported ‘motto.’”

G.ho.st launched at our D: All Things Digital conference this past May (where Ballmer and Gates also appeared).

Here are two videos showing the start-up’s whole demo:

And here’s G.ho.st CEO Zvi Schreiber’s full email letter to Ballmer (with email addresses and other personal information redacted):

From: “Zvi Schreiber (G.ho.st)”
To: [Steve Ballmer]
Cc: [redacted]
Subject: G.ho.st Virtual Computer NO WALLS trademark

September 23, 2008

Steve

G.ho.st (pronounced “ghost”, an acronym of Global Hosted Operating SysTem and the trading name of Ghost Inc.–seehttp://G.ho.st) has been marketing an early version of our Virtual Computer (VC) product and service since April 2007 under the tag line “no walls” [1].

Steve, you have apparantly personally acknowledged that we are an innovative competitor to Microsoft® Windows® [2]. The press sees the G.ho.st Virtual Computer and Microsoft Windows as competitors too [3].

What are you thinking in rebranding Microsoft Windows with the tag line “life without walls” and with the prominent messaging “IMAGINE NO WALLS” (with the word IMAGINE small and the words NO WALLS in large all-caps font right on the Windows home page http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ and [4]), marks which are virtually identical (or, ignoring the much smaller “imagine”, actually identical) to our trademark, and using these marks on the Windows home page and in a massive marketing campaign since last Thursday?

G.ho.st believes its Virtual Computer is offering consumers the first real conceptual alternative to Windows in decades. We have been using our limited marketing budget to market the user benefits of our fresh approach to personal computing under the trademark “no walls” for the last 17 months and teaching the market that “no walls” represents benefits such as

*	A personal computing environment (desktop, file system, apps) which is not “walled” into – or installed on–a physical devices–but is hosted and available from any browser
*	A personal computing environment which is free of charge and not only for the well off
*	A personal computing environment that does not require administration–no need to install or update software, no need for the user to perform backups or fight viruses
*	A personal computing environment which is online and allows all users globally to share with each other directly.

Steve, does Microsoft Windows Vista® offer these benefits?

But now you have taken a tag line virtually identical, or identical, to our trademark, without license, and applied it to a competitive product which has none of the same benefits. You are apparently spending more each hour than we were able to spend in total since April 2007–reportedly you are spending $300m in total–conveying these messages and completely overwhelming our own marketing using a virtually identical or identical trademark.

In addition the suspicion arises that Microsoft’s disrespect for G.ho.st’s intellectual property is designed to scare off potential investors in G.ho.st or partners of G.ho.st and prevent us from giving our innovative Virtual Computer solution a fair chance in the market place.

After consulting our advisors we believe that your use of marks highly similar or identical to our trademark in connection with the promotion and sale of your Windows products creates confusion as to the source, sponsorship and/or affiliation of the products before and after the point of sale, and/or is likely to cause mistake, and/or is likely to deceive the public, especially considering the acknowledged competition between Microsoft Windows and G.ho.st.

Given the size of Microsoft and the reputation of Windows and Microsoft in the market, the use of these marks is also likely to create reverse confusion where consumers are likely to be confused into thinking that our VC technology is being offered by Microsoft or that some of our technology is being licensed by Microsoft or that Microsoft has licensed our tag line or that Microsoft has achieved the same technical features that we offer–none of which are apparently true.

We are advised that these actions may constitute, inter alia, violations of 15 U.S.C. §§1114 and 1125 (Lanham Act), common law unfair competition, palming off and dilution of our trademarks under Federal, State and international laws.

In order to resolve this matter amicably, and given the phenomenal rate at which you are advertising these marks and harming our business, G.ho.st requires the following by the end of business Thursday, September 25, 2008:

1.    Written confirmation that Microsoft has ceased and desisted all unauthorized use of G.ho.st’s NO WALLS mark and any marks similar thereto, including, without limitation, the LIFE WITHOUT WALLS, IMAGINE WITHOUT WALLS and IMAGINE NO WALLS marks, on your products, Web site, marketing materials, advertising and other promotions and written agreement to not use these marks or similar marks in the future;

2. Publication in the same media where these marks were displayed or advertised of an appropriate clarification that Microsoft has not licensed G.ho.st’s technology or trademark and does not offer the same features and benefits as the G.ho.st Virtual Computer that have become associated with the theme of “NO WALLS” from G.ho.st’s own marketing.

3. Negotiating a good faith license for your past use of these marks (and should you wish it and should you and we agree on terms–also for future use).

We reserve the right to publish our own clarifications on this matter. However given that G.ho.st’s marketing budget is a tiny fraction of Microsoft’s, we would obviously not be able to substantially reduce the massive confusion on our own, nor is it our responsibility, and any publication by us would in no way reduce the need for the remedies above.

The above demands are made without prejudice to all of the rights, remedies and causes of action that G.ho.st has, including, without limitation, recovery of damages, injunctive relief and attorneys’ fees. We look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely

Zvi Schreiber
CEO, G.ho.st
