<p>It&#8217;s well known that Google doesn&#8217;t do much in the way of marketing around its search service.</p>
<p>While you will catch advertising for the Chrome browser or for Android smartphones on the Web, given Google&#8217;s huge 70 percent market share in search, it hardly needs to attract users.</p>
<p>So, then, what is one to make of a series of new videos, which look suspiciously like commercials, that Google (GOOG) launched late last week on its blog and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/searchstories">posted on a new channel on YouTube</a>.</p>
<p>Called &#8220;Search Stories,&#8221; there are a half dozen of short videos, some more adorkable than others, which star the main search box.</p>
<p>One thing they all have in common is that they have the look and feel of a marketing campaign, with a tag line of &#8220;Search on.&#8221;</p>
<p>They also stress a variety of Google products, such as mapping, video, price comparisons, email and more.</p>
<p>One imagines what pre-Batman Bruce Wayne would look for, complete with ominous music, including search terms such as &#8220;coping with loss,&#8221; &#8220;flexible kevlar&#8221; and &#8220;gotham city crime statistics.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another called &#8220;Newbie&#8221; has a grandmother searching on &#8220;keeping in touch with grandkids&#8221; and&#8211;in a clever dig at the MySpace and Facebook social networking services&#8211;&#8221;what is myfacebook,&#8221; which gets corrected by Google to &#8220;what is facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>Could it be that the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/beware-google-bing-is-going-to-suck-your-blood-um-market-share-the-new-commercial">$100 million marketing push</a> that Microsoft (MSFT) launched for its Bing search service, which seems to be <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091116/comscore’s-october-2009-search-data-google-and-microsoft-up-yahoo-down/">slowly gaining share</a>, is starting to get on the nerves of those Spocks in Silicon Valley?</p>
<p>Not that Google would admit that, simply saying they were feeling all warm and fuzzy and so they said they decided to make some kids-let&#8217;s-put-on-a-show videos.</p>
<p>Wrote <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/cool-even-batman-uses-google.html">Robert Wong of Google Creative Lab</a> in a blog post, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Because while we&#8217;re proud of the innovations we&#8217;re making in search, we&#8217;re proudest of the things people use search to accomplish. In other words, the best search results don&#8217;t show up on a webpage&#8211;they show up in somebody&#8217;s life.</p>
<p>So in that spirit, we made a bunch of videos. There&#8217;s one about grandma dipping her toe into technology. One about friends taking a Kerouac inspired road trip. And yes, there&#8217;s even one about Bruce Wayne.</p></blockquote>

<p>Microsoft (MSFT) sent out an internal email to staff about the move for the GM of MSN&#8217;s Global Media Group, which has already taken place.</p>
<p>MSN U.S. head Scott Moore is now reporting directly to MSN Corporate VP Erik Jorgensen. So will Brett Wayn, who has been working under Nelson on international coordination and who has taken over MSN&#8217;s international business on an interim basis.</p>

<p>BoomTown&#8217;s title for the relationship: A Couple of White Geek Guys Sitting Around Arguing!</p>
<p>The role includes coordinating a massive shift of engineering talent from Yahoo to Microsoft, making sure ad systems are copacetic and most of all, smoothing over what is likely to be a number of bumps in the partnership.</p>
<p>To help make the frustrations less frustrating, there is a $50 million annual payment to Yahoo by Microsoft for three years, for unspecified &#8220;transition and implementation costs.&#8221;</p>
<p>At least 400 Yahoo employees will be hired by Microsoft, which will also provide funds for retention packages to keep 150 more Yahoos motivated during the transition.</p>
<p>The “Definitive Agreement” between the Silicon Valley company and the Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft, which had been slated to be signed by Oct. 27, 2009, is about to be completed. </p>
<p>Then, as soon as regulatory approvals are in place, it will be showtime for Nelson and Morrissey.</p>

<p>When in San Diego recently, BoomTown paid a visit to Qualcomm and its Chairman and CEO, Paul Jacobs, to talk about a new &#8220;smartbook&#8221; device the wireless-technology company unveiled last week.</p>
<p>Well, sort of&#8211;while I got a gander at a prototype, the real one is not actually set to debut until the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in January, where Jacobs will deliver his first keynote address.</p>
<p>There, he will show off what is essentially a combination of a smartphone and a netbook using wireless technology and an always-on capability, an attempt to push yet another innovative device type onto the market.</p>
<p>It will use Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon chip, and the first ones will be made by Lenovo and offered by AT&#038;T (T)&#8211;to try to get the device widely used by consumers.</p>
<p>Smartbooks will be videocentric and have a Linux-based user interface, a keyboard and a range of popular widget applications, such as email and Facebook.</p>
<p>Obviously, this will be a competitive market and, really, Apple (AAPL), with its upcoming tablet computer, is also pushing into this mobile-phone-that-ate-computers space.</p>
<p>Moving into new markets has been important for Jacobs and Qualcomm (QCOM), which recently gave fiscal-year forecasts under Wall Street expectations and has had a rocky time in recent quarters.</p>
<p>Along with the econalypse, the company has attributed this to the decline in handsets with CDMA wireless technology, which Qualcomm pioneered.</p>

<p>According to several sources close to the situation, barring any unforeseen delay, a deal to settle the Skype imbroglio is likely to be announced around the time the markets open tomorrow.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> The paperwork is taking longer than expected, so sit tight, said sources.]</p>
<p>While the massive agreement&#8211;which will settle three aggressive lawsuits lobbed by Skype co-founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis at a wide range of prominent Silicon Valley players&#8211;is not yet officially signed, sources said lawyers are apparently putting the finishing touches on the paperwork and have signature papers completed by both sides to be able to wrap it up quickly.</p>
<p>So, while nothing is ever over until it is over, it looks like it is over.</p>
<p>Sources also said that as part of the deal to end the legal madness, Zennström and Friis will get 10 percent of Skype back for rights to key software technology they control, an option to pay $83 million for another three percent of the Internet telephony service and two seats on the 23-member board.</p>
<p>Also, BoomTown has learned that a partridge in a pear tree will be thrown in to guarantee a lasting peace.</p>
<p>All kidding aside, the settlement is proof that squeaky wheels&#8211;especially if they hire the combative litigators of Skadden Arps&#8211;get the grease.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/volpi-and-index-ventures-out-of-skype-deal-the-lawsuit-happy-founder-twins-in/">has been previously reported</a>, one of the investors in the consortium that won the bidding to buy 65 percent of Skype from eBay (EBAY)&#8211;which itself had bought it in 2005 from Zennström and Friis&#8211;has withdrawn its investment and involvement as part of the settlement.</p>
<p>That would be London-based Index Ventures, which was a smaller player in the group with&#8211;ironically&#8211;a three percent stake.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Index had an outsized fight going on with Zennström and Friis.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s due to their ire, aimed at Index&#8217;s Mike Volpi, who was CEO of Joost, the failed online video site the pair founded.</p>
<p>After Zennström and Friis lost their own bid to buy back Skype, they <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091014/when-entrepreneurs-attack-all-10-new-skype-lawsuit-filings/">quickly sued Index and Volpi</a> via tech companies they control, Joltid and Joost, in Delaware.</p>
<p>The pair alleged that Volpi <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091014/exclusive-skype-founders-keep-on-punching-file-injunction-against-volpi-and-index/">used confidential information gleaned from his time as Joost CEO</a> to unfairly help the winning consortium acquire Skype.</p>
<p>The lawsuit was particularly vindictive, using embarrassing emails and making pointed accusations about Volpi plotting all kinds of nefarious schemes, like Lady Macbeth on steroids, on his way out of Joost.</p>
<p>I am not sure what law one can break for wanting to leave a job or how much damage one can do to an already failing business, but that did not stop Zennström and Friis from trying to pin some specious accusations on Volpi.</p>
<p>(I wouldn&#8217;t have been surprised if they had accused Volpi of being responsible for Balloon Boy.)</p>
<p>But such legal attacks obviously worked, making Index loath to stay in an economically less attractive deal with lessened influence over Skype.</p>
<p>And eBay and the other investors obviously wanted closure, so they could get on with the work of turbocharging Skype.</p>
<p>The fighting between Index and the Skype founders was just one part of the legal morass.</p>
<p>Zennström and Friis had already been in a battle over software licensing issues with eBay in London courts.</p>
<p>They <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091014/exclusive-skype-founders-keep-on-punching-file-injunction-against-volpi-and-index/">also filed suit again</a> in California against Skype and eBay for copyright violations.</p>
<p>For good measure, the pair added the winning buyout group, including Index, Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, in that lawsuit.</p>
<p>(In legalese&#8211;and in honor of the Yankees winning the World Series tonight&#8211;such massive lawsuit-making is called covering all your bases!)</p>
<p>Of course, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091014/when-entrepreneurs-attack-all-10-new-skype-lawsuit-filings/">Volpi and Index fired back in court filings </a> and both sides <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091015/dueling-skype-sides-hire-big-communications-guns/">armed themselves with powerful PR guns</a>.</p>
<p>Presumably, those same mouthpieces&#8211;who have been slagging the other side for weeks&#8211;will now be at the ready with honeyed tales of reconciliation tomorrow. </p>
<p>Call me cynical, but we&#8217;ll see how long <em>that</em> lasts.</p>
<p>&#8220;[Zennström and Friis] got what they wanted by using Volpi as a pawn and the lawsuits as a club,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Everyone is moving on, but not everyone is going to forget what they did to get what they wanted.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo has hired a new head of mergers and acquisitions&#8211;former General Electric (GE) M&#038;A exec Andrew Siegel, who will now be VP of corporate development.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) CFO Tim Morse dropped the news with exactly no details about that title in an <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704500604574485680672852274.html?mod=WSJ_hpp_LEFTWhatsNewsCollection">interview with The Wall Street Journal</a> about the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s third-quarter earnings.</p>
<p>Another question apparently not answered was what exactly is the status of its current top M&#038;A exec, Greg Mrva&#8211;who has had the title <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/andrew-siegel/2/29/207">Siegel has now posted on his LinkedIn profile</a>&#8211;as well as that of VP of mergers and acquisitions more recently.</p>
<p>In other words: Where the <em>heck</em> is Greg?</p>
<p>BoomTown was considering a search party&#8211;<em>get it?</em>&#8211;if Yahoo hadn&#8217;t outsourced that to Microsoft (MSFT). Thus, Plan B: Mrva milk cartons!</p>
<p>On Facebook, Mrva is still listed as being in the Yahoo network, although there was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whisper-yahoos-top-deal-man-asked-to-find-another-gig-2009-10">report floated recently by Silicon Alley Insider</a> that he was asked by Morse to leave his M&#038;A job at Yahoo and find a new one at the company. </p>
<p>Whatever the situation&#8211;either Mrva running it with Siegel or being hipchecked out by him&#8211;helming M&#038;A at Yahoo can&#8217;t be a fun job right now, given that the company has been looking to sell quite a few of its assets, including its Zimbra open-source email business, its personals unit, its HotJobs online classified business and many more to come, said sources.</p>
<p>In fact, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090921/yahoos-adds-zimbra-to-the-garage-sale-as-it-tries-to-shed-what-isnt-you/">in a recent post</a>, BoomTown wrote: &#8220;Mrva&#8217;s new job title should be: VP of un-mergers and de-acquisitions.&#8221;</p>
<p>The effort to unload big swathes of Yahoo is part of an aim by new management to slim down its diverse portfolio, even as it strives to redefine itself with a new, pricey marketing campaign that seeks to position the company primarily as a consumer offering.</p>
<p>Mrva has been the main exec shopping Yahoo properties around, according to many sources, a job that will now apparently be Siegel&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has said the company is also looking for acquisitions, mostly small, so perhaps there will be more to do for the company&#8217;s dealmakers than running an Internet garage sale.</p>
<p>I contacted Yahoo to find out what&#8217;s up with Siegel and Mrva, a well-liked exec in Silicon Valley, and also have reached out to him. When either responds with anything of note, I will update here.</p>

<p>BoomTown happens to be in the Seattle area today, deep in the heart of Microsoft territory, which apparently is now living in a state of &#8220;new normal&#8221; according to a missive by the software giant&#8217;s CEO, Steve Ballmer.</p>
<p>Well, it all looks the same to me, but in an &#8220;executive e-mail&#8221; post yesterday titled <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/execmail/2009/09-29NewEfficiency.mspx">&#8220;The New Efficiency,&#8221;</a> Ballmer has continued to stress a theme <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090206/microsofts-steve-ballmer-talks-innovation-at-democratic-policy-confab-the-full-speech">he has been sounding since earlier this year</a> about how the entire business ecosystem has to reset itself.</p>
<p>Of course, the &#8220;new efficiency&#8221; is also the new buzzword around the upcoming launch of Windows 7 and part of an event Microsoft had in San Francisco yesterday, <a href="http://vepexp.microsoft.com/thenewefficiency">as well as a Web site</a>.</p>
<p><em>Now, that&#8217;s efficient!</em></p>
<p>Wrote Ballmer in the long post:</p>
<p>&#8220;So what is the nature of this shift? After years of economic expansion fueled by unrealistic rates of consumption and unsustainable levels of private debt, the global economy has reset at a lower baseline level of activity. Today, people borrow less, save more, and spend with much greater caution.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the new normal and it will be with us for some time to come. The issue now is how to respond.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/09/ne2.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/09/ne2-249x45.jpg" alt="ne2" title="ne2" width="249" height="45" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19003" /></a></p>
<p>At the same time, in its proxy filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission in advance of its Nov. 19 annual meeting, Microsoft (MSFT) also revealed that the direct compensation of its top execs had been cut rather significantly in 2009 compared to 2008, even though the figures are still large to most average people.</p>
<p>Previously, Microsoft had announced that it had frozen merit-based raises for these execs. </p>
<p>Noted the proxy:</p>
<p>&#8220;Reflecting the company’s performance during the severe economic downturn, our executive officers, taken as a group, received Incentive Plan awards equal to 77% of their target awards and 29% lower than the comparable cash bonus and stock awards for fiscal year 2008.&#8221;</p>
<p>This was mostly due to declines in the &#8220;fair market value of the stock awards at grant,&#8221; which Microsoft tried to compensate for in a small way, mostly via increased cash incentive payments.</p>
<p>Ballmer, for example, took in $1.265 million compared to $1.34 before, while COO Kevin Turner&#8217;s take-home went from $8.6 million to $5.4 million. </p>
<p>And CFO Chris Liddell&#8211;who has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/liveblogging-the-microsoft-earnings-call-glum-chris-at-the-recessiondome">sounding the economic alarm at Microsoft</a> over the last year as its results have weakened, but in a jauntily charming Kiwi accent&#8211;took in $3.5 million, down from a previous $4.8 million.</p>
<p>Said the filing about the exec haircuts, which <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/789019/000119312509200055/ddef14a.htm">you can read about in detail here</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;In each case, financial results were less than expected due to the impact of worldwide economic conditions on our business. As a result, the Incentive Plan awards to our named executive officers for fiscal year 2009 were below both the target level for their awards and their actual fiscal year 2008 incentive compensation awards.”</p>

<p>Pretty glum overall, much like the rainy winter-is-coming weather that has arrived here in the Pacific Northwest.</p>
<p>Still, in his post&#8211;in which he touts the upcoming Windows 7 and other Microsoft products as helpers to ease the economic pain, <em>natch</em>&#8211;Ballmer (pictured here at a recent analysts meeting) noted the silver lining in the dark clouds:</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m optimistic because I believe we are entering a period of technology-driven transformation that will see a surge in productivity and a flowering of innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Until then, apparently, as Ballmer also wrote: &#8220;With less, do more.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier today, BoomTown wrote a tongue-in-cheek post to depict what I thought of the $1 billion valuation that Twitter recently got from investors.</p>
<p>It was meant all in fun, as poking holes in the frothy atmosphere around the innovative microblogging hottie is kind of an easy layup.</p>
<p>But Matthew Alexander called my <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090928/twitter-investors-celebrate-the-paparazzi-proof/">use of the wacky Kool-Aid pitcher man</a> image (see below) &#8220;kinda harsh&#8221; in a tweet.</p>

<p>Zimbra is only one of the many assets of Yahoo (YHOO) that are now on the block, including its personals business, its HotJobs online classified unit and many more to come, said sources.</p>
<p>The effort to unload Zimbra is yet another sign that the company is trying to slim down its diverse portfolio, even as it strives to redefine itself this week with a new, pricey marketing campaign that seeks to position Yahoo primarily as a consumer company.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090913/exclusive-yahoo-set-to-unveil-massive-new-marketing-campaign-at-advertising-week-declaring-size-does-matter/">first reported by BoomTown last week</a>, Yahoo will be introducing a massive branding campaign tomorrow on the second day of Advertising Week in New York.</p>
<p>The new focus Yahoo is aiming for with advertisers is to stress its huge size and scale with consumers. The troubled Internet giant is still one of the most trafficked sites on the Web.</p>
<p>And consumers will also be reminded of this. The Wall Street Journal wrote a follow-up story yesterday on the marketing effort, noting that the $100 million campaign&#8217;s tagline is &#8220;It&#8217;s You.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Get it?</em> The &#8220;Y&#8221; in Yahoo is the same as the one in You!</p>
<p>The details of the plan will be made public tomorrow at a press conference immediately after a keynote speech&#8211;titled &#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s Consumer Revolution…Round II&#8221;&#8211;that the company’s new CMO, Elisa Steele, is set to deliver at the Interactive Advertising Bureau&#8217;s MIXX conference.</p>
<p>The goal, said several sources at Yahoo, will be to stress Yahoo&#8217;s consumer business over all others, which are supported mostly via brand advertising, leaving more extraneous ones out in the cold.</p>
<p>Which is why Zimbra&#8211;like a lot of other Yahoo properties&#8211;is being shopped around by its top mergers and acquisitions exec, Greg Mrva and others. </p>
<p>(Mrva&#8217;s new job title should be: VP of un-mergers and de-acquisitions.)</p>
<p>Backed by Benchmark Capital, Redpoint Ventures and Accel Partners, Zimbra was an innovative  start-up whose main business was to provide clients&#8211;including Comcast (CMCSA), many ISPs and a number of colleges&#8211;with white-label email software capabilities.</p>
<p>Yahoo bought the company to goose that business, whose main rival has been Google (GOOG)&#8211;along with using Zimbra technology to improve its massive consumer email offering, also under siege from Google.</p>
<p>That integration has gone slowly, and Yahoo now has less interest in selling email products to others.</p>
<p>But the price Yahoo would get, many think, would be significantly lower that what it paid for Zimbra.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, potential buyers include Comcast and Google, as well as private-equity investors.</p>
<p>In addition, it is not out of the question that its former venture investors could be interested in a classic Silicon Valley buyback.</p>
<p>Zimbra&#8217;s founder and CEO, Satish Dharmaraj, who left Yahoo earlier this year, is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090323/zimbra-founder-and-ex-yahoo-exec-dharmaraj-to-redpoint-ventures/">now working at Redpoint</a>.</p>

<p>When BoomTown<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080227/kara-visits-seesmic-and-chats-with-loic-le-meur/"> went to visit serial entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur early last year</a> at his San Francisco HQ, he was stoked about the prospects of his &#8220;video conversation&#8221; community start-up called Seesmic.</p>
<p>That was especially due to the influx of $6 million into his bank account by high-profile angel investors like LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, Zynga&#8217;s Mark Pincus, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and others.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to today and the entire business plan of Seesmic has been upended, with the video part pretty much junked.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur is focused almost entirely on his social media desktop client, as well as Web and mobile versions, which began as a dashboard for Twitter called twhirl. </p>
<p>If at first you don&#8217;t succeed, dump and change again&#8211;the motto of Silicon Valley!</p>
<p>Seesmic has added a lot more Web services to the client to make it stickier, such as announcing yesterday that it would <a href="http://blog.seesmic.com/2009/09/seesmic-desktop-version-06-updates.html">allow users to access and manage Facebook Pages</a>.</p>
<p>The idea behind Seesmic, as well as competitors such as TweetDeck, is to allow users to manage their various social media tools much like their email accounts.</p>
<p>And while the service&#8217;s desktop client software has been a focus, Le Meur is also pushing its Web and mobile versions, all in the hopes that the newest innovation is the right one.</p>

<p>Garlinghouse, 38, has been named president of Internet and mobile communications at AOL, putting him in charge of the New York-based Time Warner (TWX) online unit&#8217;s powerful email and instant-messaging properties, including ICQ and AIM.</p>

<p>He was most recently at Silver Lake Partners, as an &#8220;in-house senior advisor,&#8221; the private equity firm that recently bought the Skype Internet telephony firm for $1.9 billion. Garlinghouse also reportedly helped work on that deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really exciting to be to able to rebuild and revitalize an industry giant,&#8221; said Garlinghouse in an interview with BoomTown earlier today. &#8220;I make no bones that these [properties] are in need of that&#8230;but there is also a huge opportunity to do something cool.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse has to hurry. Despite being among the top communications players online&#8211;a group that also includes Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) and, more recently, Google (GOOG)&#8211;AOL has lost relevance with key audiences, even as social networking properties like Facebook and the microblogging service, Twitter, have innovated in the communications space.</p>
<p>The hiring of Garlinghouse, well known in Silicon Valley circles, is meant to counter that. </p>
<p>He will head up AOL&#8217;s operations from its Mountain View, Calif., campus&#8211;which is also the former HQ of AOL-acquired Netscape Communications&#8211;where, said AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, Garlinghouse will &#8220;be CEO of Silicon Valley for us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Between all its various properties, AOL has several hundred employees in the Northern California area.</p>
<p>Armstrong said AOL&#8211;which was founded 25 years ago on the East Coast and has tried and failed many times to get a true foothold in the West&#8211;thinks having an important player at the center of the tech industry is critical as it moves to spin off as an independent company by the end of the year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a triple play in getting a great executive, who is a master in the communications on the Web and who is well known out there,&#8221; said Armstrong. &#8220;Brad is our senior AOL manager there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Along with running all of AOL&#8217;s communications properties, Garlinghouse will inherit some of its community properties, although AOL&#8217;s Bebo social networking unit&#8211;now considered to be an overpriced acquisition error&#8211;now resides in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-patch-media-ceo-brod-now-heading-aols-venture-unit">ventures unit, headed by Jon Brod</a>.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse will also be aiding Brod, said Armstrong, with AOL on the lookout for acquisition opportunities in communications and other arenas.</p>
<p>While Garlinghouse declined to be specific about what would pique his buying interest, he was responsible for such big Yahoo deals as its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">$350 million purchase of Zimbra</a> in the fall of 2007. </p>
<p>He was also key to bringing both Oddpost, which is at the heart of Yahoo&#8217;s email offering, and the popular Flickr photosharing service to Yahoo.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse said he has admired what Twitter and Facebook have done, but that they were not destroying traditional online communications, pioneered by AOL, as some assert.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a vibrant segment and this just means there are a lot of opportunities to enable integration,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think of it as an expansion of online communications and I hope AOL can do more collaboration and partnerships.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse also has to watch AOL&#8217;s basic products like email, which was recently passed by Google’s Gmail as the No. 3 email service in the U.S. Yahoo Mail is the top email, while Microsoft&#8217;s Hotmail is second.</p>
<p>How much Garlinghouse can do will depend on the future financial strength of AOL. Its advertising business has been hit hard in the econalpyse, with hopes it will return before its money-generating access business continues its slow decline. </p>
<p>Armstrong is now in the midst of looking over AOL&#8217;s cost structure and employee base, which most expect will eventually result in another round of layoffs and cuts. </p>
<p>He has been busy creating a different strategy for the company since he arrived earlier this year, as well as hiring (and firing) top execs to create a new management structure. </p>
<p>Now, that includes Garlinghouse.</p>

<p>Garlinghouse spent nearly six years at Yahoo! where he most recently served as SVP of Communications and Communities. <p>The pair founded the high-profile company&#8211;whose Series A investors include Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki&#8217;s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin&#8211;in 2006.</p>
<p>It has collected almost $23 million in funding.</p>

<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: <em>In an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo/">internal memo</a>, MySpace is now telling employees that current ad sales head Jeff Berman is leaving the company.</em></p>
<p>In a move that will surely have Madison Avenue talking, well-known online advertising sales executive Wenda Harris Millard (pictured here)&#8211;who is now president of New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy Media Link&#8211;is poised to take over all advertising sales at MySpace, sources said.</p>
<p>But, in an unusual twist, she will remain in her job at <a href="http://medialinkllc.com/index.html">Media Link</a>, which has also been hired by MySpace to advise on restructuring the social networking company&#8217;s salesforce.</p>
<p>Sources said the arrangement is expected to be announced sometime today.</p>
<p>While details are still being hashed out, Millard&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed">was the top ad exec at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) in its glory days and who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">recently left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO)&#8211;will apparently report to MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta directly.</p>
<p>In turn, all regional advertising vice presidents at MySpace will report to her. Millard is likely to work out of New York, where she lives and where the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace also has offices.</p>

<p>This is a big coup for Media Link, which was founded by Michael Kassan, given that it will essentially be running a major part of the business of MySpace as MySpace seeks to reinvigorate itself, spur innovation and reset its product strategy.</p>
<p>Media Link <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">hired Millard in April</a>, which turned out to be a good move as she appeared to be the obvious draw for MySpace, as well as News Corp. (NWS) execs.</p>
<p>She is well known to them, as well as to many in both the Internet and advertising industries. Millard has been a longtime online exec, working at Ziff Davis Media and DoubleClick in the very early days of the Web. She was also chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau last year until this past April.</p>
<p>MySpace also reportedly talked to several big online advertising sales execs like Millard about the job, according to several sources outside the company.</p>

<p>This development now leaves the fate of President of Sales and Marketing Jeff Berman (pictured here) unclear.</p>
<p>But several sources told me Berman&#8211;whom I wrote earlier this summer was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next/">&#8220;rumored to be on the bubble,&#8221;</a> but remaining for the time being&#8211;has been actively looking for a new job in the past few weeks and even told at least one person he spoke to that he was going to be &#8220;gone from MySpace by Labor Day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Probably sooner, now that MySpace is about to hire Millard and her firm to take over a big part of his job.</p>
<p>Yesterday, MySpace made another splashy move by buying the social music site, iLike, the first acquisition by its new exec team, as part of a move to push the &#8220;socialization of content.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a statement in the press release about the iLike acquisition, Van Natta might be seen as tipping his hand a little bit: &#8220;We are deeply committed to bringing world class talent into all areas of the company&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seasoned and experienced management was a point he also emphasized in a conference call with media yesterday about the iLike deal.</p>
<p>Millard is certainly that.</p>
<p>And, in fact, there has been a clearing out of almost all of MySpace&#8217;s former top execs and replacement with new blood&#8211;such as former Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) and Facebook alum Katie Geminder as SVP of user experience and design and Mike Macadaan, who is VP of product.</p>
<p>It is a process that is doubtlessly going to continue as Millard comes in and cleans house&#8211;and it will be interesting to see just what talent comes in next.</p>

<p>In its blog post, titled &#8220;Xoopit + Yahoo! Mail = Moving beyond that massive digital shoebox,&#8221; Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of Application Products Bryan Lamkin wrote, in part:</p>

And soon your inbox will become an organized photo index as well. Just imagine having a tool that collects all the photos you&#8217;ve sent and received over the years into that scrapbook you&#8217;ve never had time to assemble.</p>

<p>As I previously reported, sources said Yahoo was first impressed with its innovative plug-in that works with Gmail from Google (GOOG), and has been looking at the company for a while, previously offering about $10 million for it.</p>
<p>Xoopit also makes a similar photo-sharing application for Yahoo Mail, which it <a href="http://www.xoopit.com/press/20081215-photos-by-xoopit-for-yahoo-mail">launched late last year</a>.</p>
<p>The opening up of its popular email product to a variety of third-party applications in order to make it more robust has been a goal of Yahoo recently as it seeks to socialize one of its most popular products.</p>
<p>Interestingly, in the Yahoo blog, Lamkin said Xoopit was Yahoo Mail&#8217;s most popular third-party app.</p>

<p>One source said Xoopit was a good fit for Yahoo because it allowed the company&#8217;s email to be the platform that could knit together other social networking services, such as Facebook. This is seen as a core feature, although the Silicon Valley-based company is also opening its email products up to outside developers.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been planning on announcing the acquisition on Thursday at Fortune magazine&#8217;s Brainstorm Tech conference, where SVP of Applications Products Bryan Lamkin is appearing on a panel titled, &#8220;Dollars &#038; Demographics: Capitalizing on Demographic Trends.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lamkin, a former Adobe Systems (ADBE) exec, now runs the Yahoo unit that includes email and other communications and communities products. He was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/yahoo-hires-adobe-vet-lamkin-to-run-communications-and-communities-unit-as-dietzen-moves-to-strategy-post/">hired in April by CEO Carol Bartz</a>.</p>
<p>That panel topic is a little ironic, several sources joked, since Xoopit is not profitable and has very small revenues thus far.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/07/22/yahoo-in-talks-to-acquire-xoopit/">Wall Street Journal also reported on the deal</a>, although it said Yahoo and Xoopit were still in late-stage talks and the deal was not complete yet. </p>
<p>But, according to my sources, it is done.</p>
