<p>Who said the venture capital industry is sucking wind lately?</p>
<p>Well, it is&#8211;but not today, and especially, not Accel Partners, which sold two of its portfolio start-ups to large public companies for a total of $1.5 billion.</p>
<p>That would be the sale of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release/">AdMob to search behemoth Google</a> (GOOG) for $750 million in stock and the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091109/ea-buys-playfish/">acquisition of Playfish by gaming giant Electronic Arts</a> (ERTS) for about $300 million (plus an earn-out of up to $100 million for Playfish staff).</p>
<p>While Accel shared the AdMob largess with Sequoia Capital and others with a stake in AdMob, which focuses on mobile advertising, and shared its social-gaming winnings from Playfish with Index Ventures, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based VC firm can surely afford to choose the pricier bottle of wine this week.</p>
<p>(Also, apropos of nothing, Accel Partner and Facebook board member Jim Breyer is now officially paying for the lunch he <em>still</em> owes me!)</p>
<p>Playfish had raised a total of $21 million in funding, while AdMob had pulled in about $47 million.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think you can imagine we are very pleased,&#8221; said Rich Wong, the Accel partner involved with AdMob, in an interview this morning. But he would not give any specifics about what Accel hauled in for its portion of the two companies.</p>
<p>Still, Wong said the venture market in Silicon Valley and elsewhere was definitely &#8220;stabilizing,&#8221; noting that there has been an increasing number of exits for investors via big companies scooping up strong start-ups. </p>
<p>&#8220;AdMob and Playfish are strong players in their respective spaces and in leading categories,&#8221; said Wong. &#8220;Their sale is a sign that this kind of innovation is important to major companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, apparently, to Accel.</p>

<p>In a week, the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace will gather at a swanky new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business. </p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities. </p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source. </p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community. </p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>According to sources, Google (GOOG) is working on at least a half-dozen acquisition deals, most of which are small start-ups in the online advertising and cloud computing arenas.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s because, as The Wall Street Journal noted in a piece today, &#8220;August was shaping up to be the worst month for deal making since 1995, according to data provider Dealogic&#8221; (see the chart).</p>
<p>That was, until Disney (DIS) bought Marvel for $4 billion, in a deal announced Monday.</p>
<p>Then yesterday, eBay (EBAY) traded 65 percent of its Skype Internet telephony unit to a group of free-spending private investors, led by Silver Lake Partners, for $1.9 billion.</p>
<p>While eye-popping numbers like that make dealmakers smile, most think it is in the spate of smaller venture-backed companies that more of the action will happen, with big companies like Google, Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and even Yahoo (YHOO) as predators.</p>
<p>Many of these were funded in the Web 2.0 boom and have done well enough, but are figuring out that a link with a larger fish will likely make for a better outcome, along with filling in tech and product gaps at the giants.</p>
<p>Think about <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090810/facebook-acquires-not-twitter-oops-friendfeed-plus-the-full-press-release">Facebook&#8217;s $50 million acquisition of social networking site FriendFeed</a> recently and you have the right idea.</p>
<p>According to more than a half-dozen Silicon Valley VCs I have spoken to this week, this is the likeliest kind of exit for a large group of their portfolio companies.</p>
<p>Thus, they are putting on their finest and placing themselves on display in the store window, offering talent and innovation.</p>
<p>&#8220;We all realize that a lot of these companies are not going to be independent, so we&#8217;re all trying to figure out where they best fit in,&#8221; said one VC. &#8220;We essentially did business development for a lot of the large companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, here are some companies whose names have been bandied about of late by M&#038;A types who say they are more likely candidates for sale:</p>
<p>Veoh, the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090706/is-veoh-the-next-video-site-to-go/">Web video portal that MediaMemo wrote about</a> in July, has reportedly been searching for a home for a while now as it struggles in a costly space dominated by giants like YouTube and Hulu.</p>
<p>That goes for many other similar video efforts, such as Joost, Metacafe and Dailymotion, all of which have been trying to gain traction.</p>
<p>There is also likely to be a shakeout in the gaming and &#8220;guy&#8221; content space, which has also seen a lot of funding in the last several years and less monetary success. </p>
<p>Some possible names here include: Xfire, a gaming instant-messaging company Viacom (VIA) bought a couple years ago for $100 million; Giant Realm, a 20-something guy site funded by Comcast (CMCSA) and others; and UGO, Hearst&#8217;s version of a 20-something guy site.</p>
<p>Probably, given the need to focus on monetization, the most active M&#038;A space will be in online advertising.</p>
<p>Sources said Google, for example, has been interested in companies such as <a href="http://www.teracent.com/">Teracent</a>, a dynamic ad-serving and optimization start-up in San Mateo.</p>
<p>There are lots of names in this general arena to pick from, from Tumri to Quantcast to AdMob to the Rubicon Project, not all of which are for sale, but might be for the right price.</p>
<p>Lastly, there is the smart phone and telecom space, where there might be some of the bigger deals. </p>
<p>While Palm (PALM) has been trying mightily to gain traction with its Pre offering, many think that if it does not go as well as hoped, the company will be an acquisition target eventually for giant companies like Nokia (NOK).</p>
<p>While many think Microsoft could also be a buyer of Palm, given the lackluster performance of its Windows Mobile devices, it might be more attuned to a much bigger catch: Research in Motion (RIMM) and its business-oriented BlackBerry empire. </p>
<p>Such a massive acquisition&#8211;most of those I bounced that idea off agreed&#8211;would be an uphill battle, but it would be perhaps the best fish story ever.</p>

<p>Despite the challenges the music gaming industry has been facing of late&#8211;such as sales dropping, <em>yipes</em>, almost 50 percent in the U.S. this year&#8211;the top companies in the field are still churning out new products like it&#8217;s nobody&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>Well, actually, they are hoping it is going to be somebody&#8217;s business&#8211;namely, theirs&#8211;as they seek to reinvigorate the category, which has been one of the most innovative over the last several years.</p>
<p>Case in point is a spate of new products from the Guitar Hero division of Activision Blizzard (ATVI), which is coming out this fall with three separate major launches.</p>
<p>The fifth version of Guitar Hero arrives tomorrow with 85 tracks, more famous player characters and new features; the family-aimed Band Hero comes out soon after that; and then&#8211;in what is probably the most important debut of the three&#8211;DJ Hero will be released on October 27.</p>
<p>In that game, a player can turn into some kind of club king, scratching along with unusual mashups that Guitar Hero provides with the new game, which are heavy on hip-hop (versus Guitar Hero&#8217;s more typical rock and roll vibe).</p>
<p>[In related news, one of the key player characters in DJ Hero--DJ AM, whose real name was Adam Goldstein--was found dead in his apartment in New York on Friday night.)</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the show will go on.</p>
<p>"We are deeply saddened by the loss of DJ AM," said Tim Riley, Activision VP of music affairs, in a statement. "We hope that his work on the game will be a fitting tribute to his creative spirit and musical talent."]</p>
<p>Does this burst of energy coming from Guitar Hero, which has heretofore dominated the music game space, have to do with the Sept. 9 debut of a new Beatles title for Rock Band, the music game from Viacom (VIA)?</p>
<p>As the Fab Four might sing: <em>Yeah, yeah, yeah.</em></p>
<p>But it also has to do with both music game rivals trying to keep consumers from getting weary of the entire genre.</p>
<p>In that vein, for example, the makers of Beatles: Rock Band are telling consumers to use Guitar Hero controllers to play.</p>
<p>In anticipation of these rollouts, BoomTown visited Guitar Hero&#8217;s HQ in Mountain View, Calif., to get a look-see at the new stuff (tomorrow, I will also post interviews I did with Guitar Hero division CEO Dan Rosensweig and its brother founders).</p>

<p>Last night, BoomTown moderated a really interesting panel for an organization called Girls in Tech, titled &#8220;Journalism 2.0 RoundTable.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://girlsintech.net/">Girls in Tech</a> describes itself as a &#8220;social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent &#038; influential women.&#8221;</p>
<p>With those lofty requirements&#8211;combined with the fact that I was a girl when we had yet to land on the moon&#8211;I have no idea what I was doing there.</p>
<p>In any case, it was held in the San Francisco offices of MySpace and covered such topics such as: How blogging and citizen journalism have changed the landscape, what works in the highly connected digital media space, and, of course, the ups and down of being a woman in the male-choked tech industry in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>The panelists included former San Francisco Chronicle tech editor Deborah Gage, ZDNet&#8217;s Jennifer Leggio, Ubergizmo Editor Eliane Fiolet, VentureBeat&#8217;s Camille Ricketts and TechieDiva&#8217;s Gina Hughes.</p>
<p>It was a lively discussion, with highlights such as Fiolet telling a hilarious story about an encounter of the irksome kind at a gaming conference and jokingly recommending violence as a solution, and Hughes talking about the sometimes trollish commenters of Yahoo (YHOO) when she blogged there.</p>
<p>Overall takeaway: Be loud, be proud and ignore all the noise. That, or make some more&#8211;and, preferably, via Twitter.</p>
<p>I also did a short interview at the event with social media blogger and PR guy Brian Solis about his latest book, &#8220;Putting the Public Back in Public Relations.&#8221;</p>

<p>I chatted with both Rosensweig and Activision (ATVI) president and CEO Bobby Kotick yesterday about the move and where the gaming company is going in the year ahead.</p>

<p>And, indeed, the online music gaming space is stronger than most other Internet businesses these days, with a lot of potential, having just started to tap into social networking, mobile and other interactive possibilities.</p>
<p>So far, as a retail and home phenom, Guitar Hero has been a huge success since its release in 2005, followed by several new versions. And the company will be releasing a hip-hop-themed DJ Hero&#8211;complete with a turntable&#8211;soon, for example.</p>
<p>But, to keep up the pace, it will now be Rosensweig&#8217;s job to feed the consumer beast as never before.</p>

<p>Kotick said he had spent a lot of time looking for the right exec to turbocharge the company&#8217;s online Guitar Hero network. Already, for example, he pointed out that 200,000 original, user-generated songs had been uploaded to its Web site, with many millions downloaded back.</p>
<p>He noted that the concept of the &#8220;release your inner rock star&#8221; fantasy that Guitar Hero taps into at home had still not gone online as much as it could, and added that the brand would be moving into more and more music genres.</p>

<p>&#8220;We already have a big online business, but we have not even reached into five percent of the installed base of gamers,&#8221; said Kotick (pictured here). &#8220;I wanted someone who could focus on this with a passion and who gets how to leverage what we have already built.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kotick said he initially had asked Rosensweig for suggestions about who would be good for the job, having gotten to know him when Rosensweig was COO of Yahoo (YHOO) and Kotick was on its board.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was funny, but as I started talking to him, I thought he was the perfect person for it,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>And it was perfect timing too, with all the turbulence on Wall Street and in the private equity business. Rosensweig had already been thinking about getting back into operations, after his post-Yahoo stint at Quadrangle.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is a lot of uncertainty in the market, but what I really wanted to do was be part of developing a whole new space for an already hugely successful brand,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The growth opportunity and the ability to scale here is enormous.&#8221;</p>
<p>Rosensweig, who will start April 20, does have his work cut out for him, overseeing Guitar Hero&#8217;s game development, marketing and distribution.</p>
<p>(The division&#8217;s former head and the co-creator of Guitar Hero, Kai Huang, will report to him, while Rosensweig will report to Activision President Mike Griffith.)</p>
<p>Besides dealing with the weak economy, which the company signaled in its most recent quarter could bring trouble, the Guitar Hero behemoth must keep innovating. </p>
<p>Rosensweig is also facing competition when competitor Rock Band releases a Beatles-focused music offering in September. It is likely to be very popular, even though Guitar Hero has typically outsold Rock Band.</p>
<p>More significantly, some think the entire online music gaming trend has played out, with sales down year over year.</p>
<p>Not Rosensweig. &#8220;It is just the beginning of what it could be online in this business,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>Mr. Rosensweig will oversee Guitar Hero&#8217;s global operations including game development, hardware manufacturing, supply chain, logistics and marketing. He will report directly to Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. Kai Huang, former President and CEO of RedOctane, who along with his brother Charles Huang created Guitar Hero, will continue working at RedOctane reporting to Mr. Rosensweig.</p>
<p>Mr. Rosensweig brings significant experience to Activision having served as Chief Operating Officer of Yahoo! from 2002 through 2006, where he oversaw the company&#8217;s worldwide operations including its product development, marketing, and advertising sales and the development and introduction of inventive new Internet advertising formats.</p>
<p>Additionally, he spent 18 years at Ziff Davis, most recently serving as President where he was responsible for the global operations of the company and the successful merger of ZDNet and CNET. He held several senior positions during his tenure at Ziff-Davis, including President and Chief Executive Officer of ZDNet, which he built from a standalone Ziff-Davis company to a publicly traded, highly trafficked Internet network, President of Ziff-Davis Internet Publishing Group and Vice-President and Publisher of PC Magazine.</p>
<p>Prior to joining Activision, from 2007-2009, Mr. Rosensweig served as an operating principal at Quadrangle Group, a private investment firm, where he focused on the firm&#8217;s media and communications private equity business.</p>

<p>Rosensweig will run the hot gaming company&#8217;s division, which is located in Silicon Valley, the result of its purchase of RedOctane in 2006, source said.</p>
<p>He is well known to Activision (ATVI) Chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick, who served on the Yahoo board for many years when Rosensweig was a key exec there. Both Rosensweig and Kotick have since left Yahoo.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting move for Rosensweig, who has been working in private equity since his departure from Yahoo (YHOO) in late 2006.</p>
<p>His name has been bandied about for several high-profile Web positions of late, and many thought he might take a political job, given that he was one of many digital execs involved in helping elect President Barack Obama.</p>

<p>But the weak market for investments and Rosensweig&#8217;s longtime experience and interest in eventually returning to operations&#8211;along with his well-known passion for music&#8211;are the likeliest motivators for the move to Guitar Hero. </p>
<p>Sources said Rosensweig will start his new job at Guitar Hero&#8211;which Activision could announce as early as tomorrow&#8211;in several weeks.</p>

<p>Running a major consumer brand like Guitar Hero seems tailor-made for Rosensweig, who worked at CNET Networks and Ziff-Davis before Yahoo. In addition, the jovial exec is well-respected in Silicon Valley, giving Activision a much more prominent presence here.</p>
<p>And the energetic Kotick (pictured below with me and, yes, Paula Abdul of &#8220;American Idol&#8221;&#8211;don&#8217;t ask) has long talked about turbocharging the largely retail Guitar Hero business online, as a way to further grow the music phenom.</p>

<p>User-generated music, as well as a plethora of online transactions and social networking, have been promising new revenue opportunities, Kotick has said.</p>

<p>Overall, despite the weak economy and a cautious forecast going forward, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Activision is growing, with revenues up in the last quarter, due in large part to the popularity of its Guitar Hero and Call of Duty videogames.</p>
<p>Its fast pace, in contrast to rival Electronic Arts (ERTS), has been helped by its merger with Vivendi SA&#8217;s Blizzard Entertainment last summer. Blizzard&#8217;s World of Warcraft online game is also one of the most popular multiplayer games in the world.</p>

<p>Last night, well-known Internet entrepreneur Marc Andreessen appeared on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; television interview show, talking about the digital sector and unveiling the news that he is creating a new venture fund.</p>
<p>I had heard rumblings about Andreessen&#8217;s funding efforts earlier this week, with sources I talked to nicknaming it &#8220;Project A.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, Andreessen said the new firm is called Andreessen Horowitz (<em>zzzz</em>), because he is doing it with longtime investing partner Ben Horowitz.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the first time in my life, I am crossing over into the dark side,&#8221; said Andreessen.</p>
<p>Although he gave few specific details about the fund, Andreessen essentially said he was simply putting a structure around his own active angel investing, which has included start-ups like Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn and many more. </p>
<p>His new effort will focus on early-stage investments, he said, noting that &#8220;our claim to fame is, we’ve actually, you know, by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, we’ve done it, we’ve been on that side of the table for a long time; we know what it’s like.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adding that he and Horowitz had made 36 investments over the last three years of up to $200,000, Andreessen said his new firm will make up to $1 million bets on start-ups.</p>
<p>Of course, for most of the interview, Rose zeroed in on hot topics like Facebook, the social-networking site on whose board Andreessen serves.</p>
<p>The voluble tech star did his job, talking about how Facebook could turn on the spigot and make all sorts of money anytime it wants and about the recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090218/boomtown-decodes-the-zuckerberg-terms-of-service-my-bad-memo-now-with-10-percent-more-so-very-sorrys/">controversy around its Terms of Service kerfuffle</a>.</p>
<p>He also talked about the Andreessen-backed Ning social network service, the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, Twitter, why the New York Times irks him, Google (GOOG), the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle e-book reader and gaming.</p>
<p>Ironically, the Netscape co-founder and his Xbox from Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;<em>eek</em>&#8211;&#8220;have a very close personal relationship.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Andreessen also told Rose a little bit about the new fund he is raising money for, for example, while discussing the economic meltdown.</p>
<p>Talking about the fact that innovation will survive, Andreessen said: &#8220;Like with our new fund, if we fund a company today, we&#8217;re thinking about a return in seven to 10 years, so we can go through three or four or even five years of economic downturn, as long as, at some point, we come out the other end.&#8221;</p>

<p>EA&#8217;s effort was motivated, in part, by Activision&#8217;s recent merger with Vivendi Games, which includes Blizzard Entertainment&#8217;s &#8220;World of Warcraft,&#8221; one the most popular multi-player games.</p>
<p>The merger has made Activision (AVTI), with its own well-known franchises&#8211;especially the hugely popular &#8220;Guitar Hero,&#8221; which debuted version IV at <strong>D6</strong>&#8211;one of the gaming industry&#8217;s largest companies.</p>
<p>In this second video, Kotick talks about virtual goods and in-game advertising, the international market, set-top boxes, violence and &#8220;Grand Theft Auto,&#8221; the competitiveness of the gaming business, the situation at Yahoo (he was, until recently, a board member), and takes a question from the audience about social gaming. </p>

<p>Since I posted an interview with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080513/games-people-play-social-gaming-networks-shervin-pishevar-speaks/">Social Gaming Network&#8217;s Shervin Pishevar</a> today on the announcement of his $15 million funding, it seems only sporting to post this lively video interview I also did with his main competitor, Mark Pincus of <a href="http://www.zynga.com">Zynga</a>, recently too.</p>
<p>Zynga, named after Pincus&#8217;s dog, is one of the two main social-gaming networks that are competing for audience by offering highly interactive games of all kinds. Its aim is to be more engaging and create a series of addictive games that users will return to again and again.</p>
<p>Pincus, who also founded the Tribe social-networking site, is a longtime entrepreneur. I met him way back when as a reporter at the Washington Post when he and Sunil Paul launched one of the few start-ups&#8211;Freeloader&#8211;in the D.C. area.</p>
<p>And I can report that Pincus is as jumpy and energetic today as he was 15 years ago. </p>
<p>He has certainly been busy lining up a spate of fancy investors, garnering $10 million in funding in January, including from: Union Square Ventures, Foundry Group, Avalon Ventures, Pilot Group, along with personal investments from Silicon Valley players Reid Hoffman and Peter Thiel.</p>
<p>Zynga, which is larger than rival SGN, claims 2.3 million total daily active users across Facebook, with its Texas Hold&#8217;em game being the largest it offers. Other games include Sea Wars, Blackjack, Attack! and Scramble.</p>
<p>As I said in my SGN post, while BoomTown often makes fun of viral apps, most of which are faddish and juvenile, the better-made gaming apps actually are likely to be a real business over time, as long they remain engaging and fun to play as the classic real-life games are. </p>
<p>Zynga plans on making money through ads, including creating its own ad network for other gamers, as well as via the sale of virtual goods and premium offerings.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a chat with Pincus at Zynga&#8217;s offices (Pincus owns the building, by the way, which also houses a bunch of other Web 2.0 start-ups) in San Francisco:</p>

<p>Today, in yet another episode of the Web 2.0 lottery, <a href="http://www.sgn.com">Social Gaming Network</a> grabbed $15 million in funding for its widgety gaming apps that are popular on Facebook and other social-networking sites.</p>
<p>The round, led by Greylock Partners, Founders Fund, Columbia Capital and Novak Biddle Venture Partners, will go toward expanding its offerings, which include the popular Warbook, and also its network for other developers to create and publish online games on.</p>
<p>SGN grew out of Webs.com, which used to be known as Freewebs.</p>
<p>While BoomTown often makes fun of viral apps, most of which are faddish and juvenile, the better made gaming apps actually are likely to be a real business over time, as long they remain engaging and fun to play as the classic real-life games are. </p>
<p>After all, who ever gets sick of Candyland?</p>
<p>SGN&#8217;s games are not quite that, focusing more on strategy and bang-bang that 12-year-old boys of any age so love, but, CEO Shervin Pishevar promises, with increasingly rich features and better graphics.</p>
<p>The business plan? Advertising, of course, especially sponsorships, as well as the sale of virtual goods and premium offerings.</p>
<p>SGN&#8217;s other popular online games include FightClub, StreetRace, Jetman, Text Twirl and Free Gifts. It has 1.1 million daily active users mostly across Facebook, but also on Bebo, hi5, and MySpace. </p>
<p>In the space, its main competitor is Zynga (here is a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080513/games-people-play-zyngas-mark-pincus-speaks/">post and video with its founder, Mark Pincus</a>). Naturally, the two bicker back and forth in the blogosphere about size and quality of games.</p>
<p>But it seems to me that there is room for both, so the fighting seems like a lot of noisy, well, <em>game-playing</em>.</p>
