<p>BoomTown was intrigued when Mind-Your-Own Biz Stone, one of the co-founders of Twitter, penned a blog post yesterday about the microblogging service changing its prompting question.</p>
<p>Now, above the little Twitter box, it reads, &#8220;What&#8217;s Happening?&#8221; and not the original tweet query, &#8220;What are you doing?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The fundamentally open model of Twitter created a new kind of information network and it has long outgrown the concept of personal status updates,&#8221; wrote Stone. &#8220;Twitter helps you share and discover what’s happening now among all the things, people, and events you care about. &#8216;What are you doing?&#8217; isn’t the right question anymore&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>While the blogosphere covered this development as if it were a moment of monumental meaning, most were ignorant that the true beacon of innovative What&#8217;s-Happeningness does not reside in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Instead, it would be embodied completely by the 1970s television show, &#8220;What&#8217;s Happening!&#8221;</p>
<p>The sitcom was about three African-American teens living in the Watts section of Los Angeles&#8211;Raj, Rerun and Dwayne.</p>

<p>In a week, the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace will gather at a swanky new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business. </p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities. </p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source. </p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community. </p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the ongoing game of Internet exec musical chairs, Greg Coleman (pictured here), who has been a top exec at both Yahoo and AOL, is poised to become president of the Huffington Post, as well as chief revenue officer, several sources said.</p>
<p>The deal for Coleman to come on board at the privately held online news site&#8211;which has grown significantly over the last year and just added well-known online media exec Eric Hippeau as CEO&#8211;came together only recently.</p>
<p>And it is not clear what the role of current Huffington Post Chief Revenue Officer James Smith will be going forward.</p>
<p>The Coleman hiring is most likely the work of Hippeau, who has known him from Coleman&#8217;s days as head of ad sales at Yahoo (YHOO). Hippeau has been on the board of the Internet giant for many years.</p>
<p>Hippeau was also a key player in the $5 million investment in the Huffington Post by SoftBank Capital in 2006.</p>
<p>He has also been a director on its small board, which also includes co-founders Arianna Huffington and Kenny Lerer, as well as Oak Investment Partners&#8217; Fred Harman.</p>
<p>Oak recently added <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081201/huffington-post-nabs-25-million-in-funding-heres-an-exclusive-boomtown-interview-with-oak-investments-fred-harman">$25 million to the funding kitty at the Huffington Post</a>, which is headquartered in New York.</p>
<p>The money will be used to expand the site into the local arena, investigative news, and verticals such as tech, a section set to debut Sept. 21.</p>
<p>It is all being done to build on what has been a strong traffic year for the Huffington Post, which claims it has over 21 million unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Nielsen Online has pegged that at the lower figure of 8.9 million, but reported that the Huffington Post was one of the fastest-growing, year-over-year news sites.</p>
<p>Despite that, the site still has not been regularly profitable, despite doubling annual revenue&#8211;mostly in advertising&#8211;to what some estimate to be about $8 million in 2009. </p>
<p>Presumably, goosing that revenue is what Coleman is being pegged to help do&#8211;and he certainly has a lot of online advertising experience, having made stops at a lot of Internet companies in the past few years.</p>
<p>He was head of advertising sales at Yahoo for seven years, after another long stint at Reader&#8217;s Digest. Yahoo&#8217;s ad business grew strongly under him.</p>
<p>But Coleman ran into Yahoo&#8217;s management buzzsaw after trouble hit the company in 2007. He was one of the first in a long line of execs to leave the troubled company, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070829/hey-kids-lets-put-on-a-yahoo-reorg/">departing in one of its many controversial reorganizations</a>.</p>
<p>He was soon running a Los Angeles-based start-up called <a href="http://www.netseer.com">NetSeer</a>, which focuses on ad targeting. </p>
<p>He then <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/aol-ad-head-clarizio-out-being-replaced-by-former-yahoo-sales-head-coleman/">headed to AOL in February</a> to run its Platform-A division.</p>
<p>But when new management was suddenly put in place by Time Warner (TWX) in the spring, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come">Coleman left after only a few months</a> on the job.</p>
<p>After taking the summer off, several sources said, he has recently been looking at a variety of jobs.</p>
<p>That included MySpace, where former Yahoo colleague Wenda Harris Millard&#8211;now with Media Link&#8211;was <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo">hired recently as an outside consultant</a> to help the News Corp. (NWS) social networking site rejigger its ad business.</p>
<p>The Huffington Post spokesman declined to comment when BoomTown inquired about Coleman&#8217;s hiring.</p>

<p>One of the great things about the Internet is the immediacy in getting relevant information, especially via video. </p>
<p>Such has been the case with the fires that have been raging around Los Angeles of late, riveting images of which have proliferated around the Web, posted by professionals and amateurs alike.</p>
<p>Having just spent a week in the area, BoomTown can attest to the surrealness of driving around the city with scary fires clearly visible on the hills nearby. While the fires are now starting to come under control, the videos of them are still burning hot.</p>
<p>To get a taste of it, check out this amazing real-time video of one of the fires, taken last week and posted on YouTube&#8211;it is a time-lapse format, which a lot of people are doing:</p>

<p>Which is precisely what <strong>All Things Digital</strong> had written in a previous post: That Media Link <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">was the hired gun on a strategic basis</a>, with Millard as the point person on fixing the ad sales structure, strategy and more at MySpace.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo/">In an internal memo today</a>, MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta said the same: &#8220;As part of this process on an interim basis the firm will help manage our day-to-day sales organization under the leadership of Wenda Harris Millard.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, the New York and Los Angeles media consultancy definitely wanted to make clear, both internally and externally, that their hiring had nothing to do with the departure today of MySpace Sales and Marketing President Jeff Berman.</p>
<p>And, indeed, according to both Media Link founder and Chairman Michael Kassan, whom I also spoke with today, Media Link had been talking to MySpace&#8211;including Berman, who decided to finally leave only today&#8211;since January.</p>
<p><em>Got it!</em> Media Link also did not hip-check Berman to the curb!</p>
<p>Still, it is a huge and deeply involved job for Media Link, and especially Millard, who will be working with ad sales until a replacement is found for Berman, and then after.</p>
<p>Millard stressed that her new role does not mean spending all her time cussing out ad sales folks who did not make their numbers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Media Link will be working on big-picture strategy related to ad sales, product development and structure,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But, of course, I will be very involved and this is a huge assignment.&#8221;</p>
<p>She certainly has the experience to take on the ad troubles of MySpace.</p>
<p>Millard&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed">was the top ad exec at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) in its glory days and who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">recently left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO)&#8211;has been a longtime online exec, working at Ziff Davis Media and DoubleClick in the very early days of the Web. She was also chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau last year until this past April.</p>

<p>But she also noted that she did not want people to be confused, pointing out that many others at Media Link will also be working on the fix-MySpace assignment too, even as she will also be tending to Media Link&#8217;s stable of clients. </p>
<p>&#8220;This is an engagement to help its management drive forward a lot of initiatives,&#8221; said Millard. &#8220;It is the management of MySpace who are the ones in charge.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a point that Media Link&#8217;s Kassan also made in a conversation I had with him today. </p>
<p>&#8220;I am very excited, since it is an important strategic assignment and part of the promise of Wenda&#8217;s unique set of skills,&#8221; he said, acknowledging that this was an unusually large job, very complex and unique for Media Link. &#8220;That said, this kind of work is our sweet spot.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: <em>In an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo/">internal memo</a>, MySpace is now telling employees that current ad sales head Jeff Berman is leaving the company.</em></p>
<p>In a move that will surely have Madison Avenue talking, well-known online advertising sales executive Wenda Harris Millard (pictured here)&#8211;who is now president of New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy Media Link&#8211;is poised to take over all advertising sales at MySpace, sources said.</p>
<p>But, in an unusual twist, she will remain in her job at <a href="http://medialinkllc.com/index.html">Media Link</a>, which has also been hired by MySpace to advise on restructuring the social networking company&#8217;s salesforce.</p>
<p>Sources said the arrangement is expected to be announced sometime today.</p>
<p>While details are still being hashed out, Millard&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed">was the top ad exec at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) in its glory days and who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">recently left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO)&#8211;will apparently report to MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta directly.</p>
<p>In turn, all regional advertising vice presidents at MySpace will report to her. Millard is likely to work out of New York, where she lives and where the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace also has offices.</p>

<p>This is a big coup for Media Link, which was founded by Michael Kassan, given that it will essentially be running a major part of the business of MySpace as MySpace seeks to reinvigorate itself, spur innovation and reset its product strategy.</p>
<p>Media Link <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">hired Millard in April</a>, which turned out to be a good move as she appeared to be the obvious draw for MySpace, as well as News Corp. (NWS) execs.</p>
<p>She is well known to them, as well as to many in both the Internet and advertising industries. Millard has been a longtime online exec, working at Ziff Davis Media and DoubleClick in the very early days of the Web. She was also chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau last year until this past April.</p>
<p>MySpace also reportedly talked to several big online advertising sales execs like Millard about the job, according to several sources outside the company.</p>

<p>This development now leaves the fate of President of Sales and Marketing Jeff Berman (pictured here) unclear.</p>
<p>But several sources told me Berman&#8211;whom I wrote earlier this summer was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next/">&#8220;rumored to be on the bubble,&#8221;</a> but remaining for the time being&#8211;has been actively looking for a new job in the past few weeks and even told at least one person he spoke to that he was going to be &#8220;gone from MySpace by Labor Day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Probably sooner, now that MySpace is about to hire Millard and her firm to take over a big part of his job.</p>
<p>Yesterday, MySpace made another splashy move by buying the social music site, iLike, the first acquisition by its new exec team, as part of a move to push the &#8220;socialization of content.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a statement in the press release about the iLike acquisition, Van Natta might be seen as tipping his hand a little bit: &#8220;We are deeply committed to bringing world class talent into all areas of the company&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seasoned and experienced management was a point he also emphasized in a conference call with media yesterday about the iLike deal.</p>
<p>Millard is certainly that.</p>
<p>And, in fact, there has been a clearing out of almost all of MySpace&#8217;s former top execs and replacement with new blood&#8211;such as former Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) and Facebook alum Katie Geminder as SVP of user experience and design and Mike Macadaan, who is VP of product.</p>
<p>It is a process that is doubtlessly going to continue as Millard comes in and cleans house&#8211;and it will be interesting to see just what talent comes in next.</p>

<p>BoomTown was as surprised as anyone when longtime Silicon Valley Web music entrepreneur Dave Goldberg said in May that his <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090420/former-yahoo-music-exec-dave-goldberg-to-head-survey-monkey">next move was going to be investing in and running an online survey company with the unusual name of SurveyMonkey</a>.</p>
<p>Most expected the former Yahoo music head to land at an entertainment or media giant, running its digital operations.</p>
<p>But it is at SurveyMonkey where Goldberg has swung himself and he has now made good on his promise to open a Silicon Valley office of the Portland-based start-up.</p>
<p>But Goldberg&#8217;s background does not suggest an interest in digital clipboards and checking boxes.</p>
<p>He joined Yahoo (YHOO) in 2001 and headed its global music operations after it bought a company he co-founded in 1994 called LAUNCH Media.</p>
<p>Previous to that, Goldberg was director of marketing strategy and new business development at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. </p>
<p>After leaving Yahoo more than two years ago, he worked for a while as an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070501/a-bell-rings-and-another-yahoo-gets-his-vc-wings/">entrepreneur-in-residence at Benchmark Capital</a> and told me he was attracted to the online survey creator most of all for three key reasons:</p>
<p>It&#8217;s profitable. It&#8217;s an open field. And, it&#8217;s much more of a consumer product than people realize.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s presumably why he also put up some money to become a minority investor in SurveyMonkey.</p>
<p>It was part of a deal in which Spectrum Equity Investors and others, including Bain Capital Ventures, acquired a majority interest in the company.</p>
<p>Since it was founded in 1999 by Ryan Finley and Chris Finley, who remained minority investors and working at the company, SurveyMonkey has become the largest such survey company online, with competitors that include Zoomerang and Constant Contact. </p>
<p>SurveyMonkey&#8211;which has signed up two million users, with six million surveys created and 200 million responses completed&#8211;charges a variety of fees for premium versions of its service, sitting between expensive software packages on one side and free, featureless Web surveys on the other.</p>

And today, MySpace, which is still 1,000-strong, has to face the cold, harsh light of day in the aftermath of the restructuring and get busy quickly figuring out a way to reinvigorate a brand that has suffered after a stunning rocket of a start many years ago.

So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here's a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who'll be making them.]]></description>

<p><em>Now what?</em></p>
<p>The party-all-night social-networking site that has been MySpace so far got a massive morning-after shock yesterday when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090616/myspace-a-place-for-layoffs/">30 percent of its workforce&#8211;or 420 employees&#8211;was laid off</a>.</p>
<p>And today, MySpace, which is still 1,000-strong, and its leaders have to face the cold, harsh light of day in the aftermath of the restructuring and get busy quickly figuring out a way to reinvigorate a brand that has suffered after a stunning rocket of a start many years ago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true since a report also just came out by market research outfit comScore (SCOR) showing that Facebook has surpassed MySpace in the key U.S. market as the top social-networking site.</p>
<p>So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here&#8217;s a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who&#8217;ll be making them.</p>
<p><strong>MORE LAYOFFS?</strong></p>
<p>“Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company,” said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">new CEO Owen Van Natta</a> in a statement about the layoffs. </p>
<p>What he did not say was that cost-cutting via layoffs is almost always the first move in a turnaround.</p>
<p>These cuts have actually been long in coming, but it&#8217;s promising that they finally happened so quickly after Van Natta&#8211;along with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">COO Michael Jones</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/myspace-musical-chairs-jason-hirschhorn-also-in-at-myspace-as-chief-product-officer/">Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn</a>&#8211;were brought in by News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller to replace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe. </p>

<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg" alt="layoff" title="layoff" width="224" height="224" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-14661" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;The layoffs were a total reset,&#8221; said one source, who noted that unless MySpace&#8217;s advertising business falls off a cliff, which it is unlikely to do in the short term, more cuts in the U.S. will not be needed for now. That might not be true internationally, where MySpace has not performed as strongly.</p>
<p>At this point, MySpace is now about the same size as chief rival Facebook&#8217;s staff, which has been growing much more quickly (you can see my <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090615/kara-tours-the-new-facebook-hq-and-gets-ripped-the-uncut-video/">video tour of its new Silicon Valley HQ here</a>).</p>
<p>Except for not making the move to new offices in Los Angeles, the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace is also not going to be closing offices elsewhere, as has been reported, most especially its San Francisco one.</p>
<p>In fact, Van Natta is traveling to visit all of them, his memo said, over the next several days.</p>
<p><strong>LEADERSHIP</strong></p>
<p>Despite the large number of layoffs and the departure of DeWolfe, most expect there to be very little change in the top ranks of MySpace leadership for the time being.</p>
<p>While Jeff Berman, MySpace&#8217;s president of sales and marketing, has been rumored to be on the bubble, multiple sources said he would be staying in his job.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll continue to be aided by Angela Courtin, SVP of marketing, who is well-regarded. </p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/281x211jpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/281x211jpg.jpeg" alt="281x211jpg" title="281x211jpg" width="281" height="211" class="alignright size-full wp-image-14662" /></a></p>
<p>The same is true of the other major question mark, co-founder Tom Anderson (pictured here), who has held the president title at the company and was in charge of its products.</p>
<p>Anderson does not have a new title yet and will no longer be in a key operational role, but many sources said his historical knowledge and his tight relationship with the MySpace community make it important that he remain at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tom is clearly in touch with what has made MySpace special,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;And it is important that he remain to keep the culture alive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also staying for now is Tom Andrus, who has been SVP of product management under Anderson and is now reporting to Hirschhorn. While initially upset by being supplanted so quickly by new execs, most sources told me that he is a solid and well-liked exec.</p>
<p>The same is said of Jason Oberfest, SVP of business development, who is also staying. So too, CTO Aber Whitcomb, whom many thought would be leaving.</p>
<p>The only major exec departure I could confirm was Fox Interactive Media CFO Ed McKenna, who was in charge of MySpace too. Sources said will be leaving the company as his function gets consolidated into higher corporate units at News Corp.</p>
<p><strong>PRODUCT REHAUL</strong></p>
<p>Lastly, most noted that MySpace cannot cut its way back to health, which is why sources said its execs are now beginning to engage in a major overhaul of the product itself.</p>
<p>While leadership had considered bringing in a separate new skunkworks-type team to do that, it has been decided that the current staff&#8211;helped by some outside consultants&#8211;will be doing a top-to-bottom redo of MySpace.</p>
<p>MySpace could use it. As you can see from the charts below from a poll that we did for the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference recently&#8211;and where Walt Mossberg and I interviewed Van Natta and Miller onstage (see the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/jon-miller-and-owen-van-natta/">highlights video below</a>)&#8211;it has a lot to fix, including reengaging users, improving technology and differentiating itself from Facebook.</p>
<p>And, in fact, carving itself out as a different product than Facebook is one major aim because the offerings&#8211;while both are social networks&#8211;are quite different in approach. Facebook has evolved into more of a utility, while MySpace has made better inroads as an entertainment hub.</p>

<p>Whatever changes are made, most sources note that MySpace needs to try to remain true to its original frisky and fun start-up core, while innovating a next-generation product and continuing to goose its advertising business.</p>
<p>That also includes starting up renegotiations with Google (GOOG) about its search-advertising partnership, talks that are just getting started now (more on that soon).</p>
<p>Most of all, said one person, pointing to the long and painfully public struggle at Yahoo (YHOO), leadership has to stop the focus on MySpace being broken as soon as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;MySpace needed to be shaken up, but it is still a very powerful brand and has huge traffic,&#8221; said the source. &#8220;Its management has to project a sense inside and outside that it is not only fixable, but also can lead again.&#8221;</p>
<p>As with Yahoo, Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL and many others before it, that&#8217;s no easy task for MySpace, starting today. </p>

Shopflick will enable Sugar’s ShopStyle&#8211;the leading social shopping destination for women&#8211;to pioneer a new video-driven commerce offering for its merchant partners.</p>
<p>Sugar also announced that it has completed its Series C funding by securing $16M from existing investor Sequoia Capital. Sugar intends to use the funds for acquisitions and international expansion to support the company’s growth into a major media company targeted to women’s lifestyle. In conjunction with the transaction, the Company has repurchased shares sold in 2007 to NBC Universal.</p>

<p>Yesterday, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company/">BoomTown broke the news that Yahoo&#8217;s SVP North American Audience, Jeff Dossett, was leaving the Internet company</a> because of personal reasons.</p>
<p>But I also noted that sources said he was likely to quickly land at a start-up, and in fact, he has resigned from Yahoo to do just that. </p>
<p>Dossett, who came to Yahoo from Microsoft in November, is taking a job as CEO of AdventureLink, an online site aimed at adventure travel and booking such trips.</p>
<p>The Los Angeles-based <a href="http://www.adventurelink.com">AdventureLink</a> is a good fit for Dossett, who is an avid mountain climber.</p>
<p>He took two years off from Microsoft (MSFT) in 2002 to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, finally reaching the summit of Mount Everest in May of 2004.</p>
<p>Dossett reached the summit of Everest again for a second time last year.</p>
<p>Well-known adventurist Richard Bangs&#8211;who does content for Yahoo (YHOO), as well as television, and who serves on AdventureLink&#8217;s board&#8211;was involved in bringing Dossett on board.</p>

<p>Of course, <a href="http://www.whatisleft.org/">Sacca blogs</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/sacca">tweets</a> a <em>LOT</em>, even as he travels incessantly to Ethiopia, Dubai, and various places where Bono might be hanging.</p>
<p>(Thus, don&#8217;t miss this very funny mocking of Sacca&#8217;s tweets under the name <a href="http://twitter.com/fakesacca">fakesacca</a>, reportedly done by Googler Dick Costolo, with pitch-perfect tweets like: &#8220;Wow, not sure what city i&#8217;m in. The food says London, the prices say Tokyo, and the women say Los Angeles. I&#8217;m going w/ Hong Kong,&#8221; &#8220;Going over my SXSW talk on &#8216;why I should have equity in your startup.&#8217; Getting inspired just proofreading it&#8221; and, my personal favorite, &#8220;If you&#8217;re pole-dancing &#038; heli-skiing &#038; in the ny times w/in 12hr of each other, something has either gone horribly wrong or horribly RIGHT!&#8221;)</p>
<p>With all this dabbling Sacca does, BoomTown has decided to dub the Silicon Valley gadfly: The Start-Up Whisperer.</p>

<p>Platform-A President Greg Coleman&#8211;the former Yahoo advertising sales exec who came to AOL only three months ago&#8211;is leaving the company, sources said, as new CEO Tim Armstrong remakes his top staff in preparation to spin off the Time Warner (TWX) online unit.</p>
<p>Coleman was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/aol-ad-head-clarizio-out-being-replaced-by-former-yahoo-sales-head-coleman/">brought to AOL by former CEO Randy Falco in February</a>, replacing Lynda Clarizio. But Falco was ousted two weeks after Coleman got there.</p>
<p>Armstrong, sources said, announced the moves to staff tonight, right after he told Coleman about his decision late today.</p>
<p>Coleman will be replaced by a Google ad exec, Jeff Levick, sources said, who had a close relationship with Armstrong when they were both working at Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>AOL said in a press release that Levick would become &#8220;President, Global Advertising and Strategy, a new and expanded role, in which he would be &#8220;responsible for Platform-A, AOL’s advertising business, as well as developing global revenue strategies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Levick will be the third major Google advertising exec to leave the company recently, after Armstrong himself and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/another-googler-gone-doubleclick-boss-david-rosenblatt-leaves-for-nothing/">today&#8217;s departure of former DoubleClick boss David Rosenblatt</a>.</p>

<p>Also out: CFO Nisha Kumar, who came to AOL in early 2007 from Time Warner. She was told of the decision earlier, and there has been a search on for her replacement.</p>
<p>It is a time of much change at AOL. Yesterday, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/time-warner-makes-it-official-aol-spinoff-is-coming/">Time Warner reiterated its intent to spin off AOL</a> in a regulatory filing, and to buy back the five percent stake Google owns.</p>
<p>Time Warner also had to deliver bad news about <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/aols-disappearing-ad-revenues-down-20/">AOL&#8217;s disappearing ad revenue</a> today in its quarterly earnings report. It was down 20 percent.</p>
<p>Its ad business has not been helped by the fact that AOL has seen a number of Platform-A heads roll over the last two years.</p>
<p>Coleman is an experienced online ad exec, who was at Yahoo (YHOO) for seven years, responsible for all advertising revenue worldwide. He came to Yahoo from Reader&#8217;s Digest.</p>
<p>But Coleman ran into Yahoo&#8217;s management buzzsaw after trouble hit the company in 2007. He was one of the first in a long line of execs to leave the troubled company, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070829/hey-kids-lets-put-on-a-yahoo-reorg/">departing in one of its many controversial reorganizations</a>. </p>
<p>But Yahoo&#8217;s ad business did grow strongly under him and former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed/">Yahoo ad exec Wenda Millard</a>. She was also pushed out of Yahoo and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart">just left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a>.</p>
<p>Before AOL, Coleman had been running a Los Angeles-based start-up called <a href="http://www.netseer.com">NetSeer</a>, which focuses on ad targeting. </p>
<p>While at AOL a short time, Coleman <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090408/ellis-gets-sales-promotion-at-aols-platform-a/">had busied himself reshuffling the staff</a> there in several moves.</p>
<p>He has a three-year contract, sources said, which AOL will presumably have to pay out on.</p>

In this new and expanded role, Levick will be responsible for Platform-A, AOL’s advertising business, as well as developing global revenue strategies. Levick comes to AOL from Google, where he was most recently VP of Industry Development and Marketing, The Americas. He will report directly to AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong.</p>
<p>“Our goal at AOL is to create great content and products, as well as make our advertising offerings the best in the industry for marketers and we are putting together the strategy to achieve that. I’m delighted that Jeff will be coming on board to lead this effort,” Armstrong said. “I’ve worked with Jeff for more than seven years at Google, and he is absolutely the right person to drive growth in our premium ad sales, dramatically scale our Advertising.com business, and further develop AOL’s research initiatives and consumer insights.”</p>
<p>“This is a perfect time to join AOL and I firmly believe that AOL’s best days are ahead of it,” said Levick. “The company has one of the largest and most engaged audiences on the Web, some of the best advertising technology in the business, and a powerful third-party network. There is great opportunity here for us to capture.”</p>
<p>As a result of this change, Greg Coleman will be leaving Platform-A, where he has served as President since early February 2009.</p>
<p>“In only a short time, Greg made a strong imprint on Platform-A’s sales organization&#8211;reorganizing and refocusing the team,” said Armstrong. “I appreciate his efforts and know that they will contribute to the work that lies ahead with Platform-A.”</p>
<p>Levick will officially join AOL in the coming weeks. At Google, Levick was responsible for business marketing activities for the Americas as well as sales development and strategy for all of the vertical industries covered by Google&#8217;s Americas sales organization. Levick joined Google in 2001 and has held various executive management positions in the company’s advertising sales organization in both North America and Europe.</p>
<p>Prior to joining Google, Levick served as a corporate attorney with a specialty in mergers and acquisitions at the international law firm of Katten Muchin Rosenman, and held roles at various online ventures in Chicago. Her answer was a decided yes, especially with great journalists working online, such as the new managing editor of the Huffington Post, whom the mega-blog has just hired.</p>
<p>That would be former CNET Networks Editor-in-Chief Jai Singh (pictured here), who <a href="http://news.cnet.com/CNET-editor-in-chief-steps-down/2100-1030_3-6231171.html">quit the tech news and reviews company last year</a> after a dozen-year run. </p>
<p>&#8220;The bottom line is the Huffington Post has figured out how new media should be&#8230;and that&#8217;s what attracted and appealed to me,&#8221; said Singh in an interview today.</p>
<p>While only on the job for a few days, he noted that he will be looking at more video on the site, as well as focusing on its new vertical strategy.</p>
<p>Singh is moving from San Francisco to New York, where the Huffington Post HQ is located. (Huffington herself is, ironically, located in L.A., doing her work out of her Brentwood abode.)</p>
<p>Singh has been a true online news pioneer, creating News.com for CNET in 1996. CNET is now owned by CBS (CBS). </p>

<p>MySpace has officially announced the appointment of entrepreneur and former AOL exec Mike Jones as COO, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">BoomTown reported earlier today</a>.</p>
<p>But the social-networking site also named former Sling Media top exec Jason Hirschhorn as chief product officer in what has become a series of senior management moves at MySpace.</p>
<p>The paidContent Web site <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-industry-moves-userplane-founder-mike-jones-joins-myspace-as-coo/">first reported on the Hirschhorn appointment</a> earlier this morning.</p>
<p>Besides Sling, which he recently left in a mass departure of top execs, Hirschhorn was also the top digital exec at MTV Networks and was part of the team at Viacom (VIA) that unsuccessfully tried to buy MySpace many years ago.</p>
<p>Both Hirschhorn and Jones, who are already based in Los Angeles, will report to newly named CEO Owen Van Natta, the former COO of Facebook, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">replaced MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe last week</a>.</p>
<p>Recently installed News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller has put in place a trio of well-known Internet execs at the top of MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the huge growth at Facebook.</p>
<p>MySpace&#8217;s motto is &#8220;A Place for Friends.&#8221; But it might very well now be: A place for wandering digital execs.</p>
<p>And expect more top execs to wander away from MySpace too. Once the trio get their bearings, many sources indicate that News Corp., the owner of MySpace, has given Van Natta and his key execs free rein to remake the unit.</p>
<p>There is a lot to fix at the entertainment-, music- and media-heavy site, from a renegotiation with Google (GOOG) over its advertising search deal to goosing traffic to innovating its look and feel.</p>
<p>In addition, MySpace is likely to forge closer tech ties with Silicon Valley, where Facebook is based.</p>
<p>News Corp. already noted that it was in talks with MySpace co-founder and President Tom Anderson about a new role in the company. Also likely to get a major look-see are top execs like sales head Jeff Berman and CTO Aber Whitcomb, as well as a number of others.</p>
<p>To begin, though, the trio will meet the staff of MySpace, more than 1,000 people, in an all-hands event to be held outside of its building in Beverly Hills, Calif., at about 3:30 p.m. today.</p>
<p>Sources tell me there is no space big enough at the HQ to accommodate them, so the courtyard of the building will be used.</p>
<p>BoomTown is in Los Angeles today, by coincidence, but will not be crashing the event, so send interesting tidbits my way.</p>

Michael Jones has been named Chief Operating Officer and Jason Hirschhorn has been named Chief Product Officer, effective immediately. <p>Jones has founded and operated several online businesses, including Userplane, a leading provider of tools for online communities such as MySpace. Most recently, he was the founder and CEO of Tsavo Media, an online content and search network developing next-generation publishing platforms and technology services.  </p>
<p>Hirschhorn has led both start-up and established online businesses. Most recently, he was president of Sling Media, Inc.’s Entertainment Group, which created consumer-driven applications and services for the Slingbox device. Previously, he was chief digital officer at MTV Networks, where he oversaw the company’s digital media businesses, products and strategies. Hirschhorn joined MTV Networks following the acquisition of his company, Mischief New Media, which provided interactive services to the entertainment industry. </p>
<p>“Michael’s operational insight and knowledge of the social media market will prove to be a valuable asset as we set out to evolve the MySpace product offering,” said Jon Miller, chief digital officer, News Corporation. “From a product perspective, there’s no better choice than Jason, who is highly regarded as an incredibly talented innovator, media executive and leader, all qualities I know will greatly benefit our team and our users.” </p>

<p>New MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta starts his first day on the job at MySpace bright and early this morning, coming to its Beverly Hills HQ as he takes over for co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Along with him will be a new COO, former AOL exec Mike Jones, whose appointment will be announced this morning, sources said.</p>
<p>The pair will meet with MySpace staff today at 3:30 p.m. PDT.</p>
<p>Jones was the founder of Userplane, a social-networking application maker that was bought by then-AOL head Jon Miller in 2006.</p>
<p>Miller is now the digital chief at News Corp. (NWS), which owns MySpace.</p>

<p>Jones left the Time Warner (TWX) unit last year to start Tsavo, a digital content start-up. </p>
<p>Van Natta, who was running the Project Playlist start-up until his appointment, has stronger Silicon Valley ties. For now, he will commute to MySpace from Northern California, where his family lives. </p>
<p>Van Natta was a former top-ranking Facebook exec, still holding a small stake in the MySpace rival, and has also worked at Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>But, with a strong product and technology background, the Los Angeles-based Jones is an excellent choice to be a partner to Van Natta&#8211;who was hired by Miller last week in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">flurry of change at the social-networking site</a>.</p>
<p>Their challenges include: Reinvigorating the MySpace brand, upgrading its technology, adding more innovation to its feature set, continuing to grow its nascent advertising business and dealing with the tough renegotiation of its lucrative search and advertising deal with Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>They must also play deft diplomats at MySpace, where many remain loyal to DeWolfe and to co-founder Tom Anderson. Anderson is in talks to step down as president for an unspecified new role in the company. He currently remains president.</p>
