<p>In one week, Yahoo will <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/results.cfm">report its third-quarter earnings</a>, after the market closes.</p>
<p>And so far, its stock is showing signs that investors are hoping for better days ahead for the Internet giant.</p>
<p>Shares are up 8.5 percent for the month, almost 13 percent for the last three months and almost 39 percent since the beginning of the year. </p>
<p>While that&#8217;s not the rocket ship Google (GOOG) has been on&#8211;the search giant&#8217;s stock is up 70 percent since January, which includes a big boost recently on expectations of a strong earnings report tomorrow&#8211;it&#8217;s clear investors are hoping an improvement in the online advertising market will boost Yahoo&#8217;s fortunes.</p>
<p>Wall Street is expecting $1.12 billion in net revenue and seven cents in earnings per share from Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;and a better performance than that could boost the stock.</p>
<p>In fact, a pair of bullish analyst reports that came out today predicted just that.</p>
<p>Broadpoint AmTech analyst Benjamin Schachter raised his price target to $21 a share, noting that after the search and online advertising partnership deal closes, Yahoo &#8220;should be meaningfully smaller and leaner, but should also be a significantly more profitable company.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Benchmark Co. analyst Clayton Moran moved Yahoo from hold to buy, with a price target of $20.</p>
<p>But a string of recent exec departures in Yahoo&#8217;s advertising units are making some within the company&#8217;s ranks slightly worried. </p>
<p>The departures include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090920/yahoo-corporate-partnership-svp-schinella-departing">Jim Schinella</a>, the company&#8217;s SVP for corporate partnerships, in September.</p>
<p>And yesterday, <a href="http://www.prweb.com/releases/2009/10/prweb3033294.htm">Glam Media announced that it had nabbed Josh Jacobs</a> as SVP of Brand Advertising Products &#038; Marketing. At Yahoo, Jacobs was a key exec in its display ad platform unit.</p>
<p>Many inside the company expect more departures in the ad and engineering arena at Yahoo, pointing out that many big stock packages given to hold onto talent are about to vest.</p>
<p>In addition, once Yahoo&#8217;s search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) is approved, as it is likely to be by the end of the year, hundreds of Yahoo engineers will get the choice of moving to Microsoft.</p>
<p>Some will, of course, but some simply do not want to go and many Silicon Valley companies and start-ups BoomTown spoke to report seeing more resumes recently from Yahoo staff.</p>

<p>There is little Microsoft can do to stop possible leakage of tech talent from Yahoo until the deal is approved, since the companies cannot do any integration until it is.</p>
<p>Perhaps worst of all, there seems to be nothing Yahoo can do to stifle its proclivity to yodel, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/exclusive-yahoo-working-on-major-brand-overhaul-please-no-more-yodeling/">I begged Yahoo execs to forgo</a> in its recent $100 million &#8220;It&#8217;s Y!ou&#8221; marketing push. </p>
<p>No such luck!</p>
<p>Yesterday, Yahoo launched its online <a href="http://yodelstudio.yahoo.com/us/">Yodel Studio</a> (no, I am <em>not</em> kidding), where you can record your own yodel in various music genres, like, um, rap.</p>
<p>Yahoo held a kickoff event in New York&#8217;s Time Square yesterday&#8211;however did I manage to miss it, since I was in Manhattan?&#8211;with a passel of celebrity yodelers like Jewel, as well as one in London&#8217;s Covent Garden.</p>
<p>Today, there is a yodel event in Mumbai, India. Bollywood yodeling anyone?</p>

<p>Yahoo is set to unveil a major marketing campaign to reset advertiser and consumer perception of the long-troubled company during <a href="http://www.advertisingweek.com/">Advertising Week in New York</a>, which starts a week from tomorrow.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources BoomTown has spoken to about the campaign, Yahoo (YHOO) is&#8211;at least with advertisers&#8211;going to focus on stressing the size and scale of the Internet giant. </p>
<p>The details of the plan will be made public Tuesday, Sept. 22, at a press conference.</p>
<p>It will take place immediately after a keynote speech&#8211;titled <a href="http://www.mixx-expo.com/agenda">&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s Consumer Revolution&#8230;Round II&#8221;</a>&#8211;that the company&#8217;s new CMO, Elisa Steele, is set to deliver on the second day of the Interactive Advertising Bureau&#8217;s MIXX conference. </p>
<p>MIXX is a two-day event, run by IAB, focused specifically on online advertising.</p>
<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is also going to be attending Advertising Week&#8211;during which all the major players in the advertising business gather in Manhattan for a series of events&#8211;for a plethora of meetings with big Yahoo clients.</p>
<p>It is likely she and several other senior Yahoo execs will be at the press conference, sources said.</p>
<p>That press event will also include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/yahoos-extreme-makeover-confirmed-with-the-hiring-of-a-new-global-marketing-exec/">Penny Baldwin</a>, a well-known industry exec Yahoo hired as its SVP of global integrated marketing and brand management in July. </p>
<p>The main message Bartz is set to deliver is that Yahoo is a powerhouse unlike any others on the Web when it comes to online display advertising.</p>
<p>And, in fact, Yahoo&#8211;despite all the internal and external turmoil it has undergone in recent years&#8211;remains one of the largest sites on the Internet, and is the top player in what is also called graphical advertising, as well as online media and communications.</p>
<p>&#8220;The whole push seems to be to remind people of vibrancy of the brand and exactly how huge its reach is,&#8221; said one person who has seen parts of the presentation. &#8220;It is less Yahoo is back than Yahoo has never left.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources also noted that Yahoo is likely to stick to its plan to push the idea of &#8220;your home on the Web&#8221; to consumers, which I had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/exclusive-yahoo-working-on-major-brand-overhaul-please-no-more-yodeling/">previously posted about earlier this summer</a>.</p>
<p>The idea of the Silicon Valley icon being the key hub destination for Internet users does dovetail with pushing its size to advertisers&#8211;major marketing messages that will also likely cost a pretty penny.</p>
<p>They will have to&#8211;Microsoft (MSFT) has been in the midst of a $100 million campaign for its new Bing search site and will likely spend more when it unveils updates to the service, dubbed Bing 2.0&#8211;within the next few weeks.</p>
<p>The company showed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090911/bing-2-0-sexy/">changes it showed to its own employees last week</a>, which was the subject of much tweeting on Twitter.</p>
<p>Yahoo will apparently give more specifics as to the spend for the marketing push at the press conference.</p>
<p>But, many sources said, the company is already out in the advertising market now, buying tens of millions of dollars in advertising online and offline to hawk Yahoo in print, on television and elsewhere.</p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s dramatic,&#8221; said one source about the marketing outlay.</p>
<p>Since she got to Yahoo, Bartz has continually stressed the need to promote Yahoo products and services more, including in an interview last week on CNBC (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090911/yahoos-bartz-8-facebooks-sandberg-22-googles-mayer-22-and-more-techies-makes-fortunes-50-most-powerful-women-list/">see that longish video here</a>).</p>
<p>And, in the July earnings call for Yahoo, Bartz said: &#8220;In addition, we&#8217;re hard at work on plans to reposition our most valuable asset: Yahoo&#8217;s brand. Our Q3 plans include an initial wave of incremental marketing spend which will increase substantially into Q4 and next year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also, in a Q&#038;A in the same call, she added more about the long-term nature of the spending on branding:</p>
<p>&#8220;The branding and our whole campaign of advertising is just starting; however you have to understand that this is an ongoing campaign so it&#8217;s not transient at least for the next year or so. We&#8217;re really going to move to reposition the Yahoo brand and Yahoo Company, so right now, consider that as cost that&#8217;s in the system.&#8221;</p>
<p>What Bartz and other Yahoo execs will likely stress less is search, due to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090729/microhoo-deal-finally-official-its-the-lite-version-but-is-it-still-tasty">search deal Yahoo struck in July with Microsoft</a> in which the software giant will take over the back-end technology and Yahoo will sell search ads for both companies.</p>
<p>The company will compete with both Microsoft and Google (GOOG) in garnering the search market still, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090309/microhoo-stop-them-before-they-publicly-negotiate-again">once the partnership is approved by regulators</a>, with Yahoo focusing on differentiating itself via innovative user interface, design, features and functionality. </p>

<p>Last night, onstage at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, my most excellent partner, <a href="http://walt.allthingsd.com/">Walt Mossberg</a>, interviewed well-known techno musician Moby about music and entertainment in the digital age.</p>
<p>The wide-ranging talk was part of an ongoing cultural festival series organized by The Wall Street Journal, called <a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/page/lincoln-center.html">Summer Scoops Live</a>. </p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p><strong>7:30 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Out of the steaming heat and into the cool, air-conditioned confines of Lincoln Center&#8217;s Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.</p>
<p><strong>7:39 p.m.</strong>&#8211;The lights dim and Moby and Mossberg make their entrances. Moby slinks down in his chair (&#8221;Am I greasy, or is it the chair?&#8221;) just before WSJ culture editor Christopher John Farley introduces the pair.</p>
<p><strong>7:43 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg plugs his son, who&#8217;s in a band, before asking Moby&#8211;whose real name is Richard Melville Hall&#8211;if he is really related to &#8220;Moby Dick&#8221; author Herman Melville. Moby replies that that is what his parents have always told him and explains the origins of his moniker: &#8220;When I was 11 minutes old, my parents looked at me and I was this little grub of a baby and my mother said, Richard Melville Hall is a very grown up name, and my father said jokingly, let’s call him &#8216;Moby.&#8217; All these years later, I still have this name I’ve have from infancy.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>7:46 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg asks Moby, in between jokes about being both being bald-ish, about the difference between &#8220;Play&#8221; and his new album, &#8220;Wait for Me.&#8221; Moby begins by talking about how the success of &#8220;Play&#8221; completely surprised him, because he was considered a &#8220;has been&#8221; by the time the album was originally released in the early 1990s and that Rolling Stone refused to review the album. His success with the album also confused him, because he was unsure of his next step&#8211;was he supposed to listen to the label now? To the fans? To himself?</p>
<p>&#8220;Wait for Me,&#8221; his ninth studio album, was designed as a return to simplicity, and created with old instruments&#8211;many of which were purchased on eBay&#8211;in his bedroom in Manhattan. When Mossberg asks Moby to clarity what he means by &#8220;his bedroom,&#8221; the musicians lays out out his floorplan&#8211;he lives in a two-bedroom apartment on Mott Street and with a small space (&#8221;two people starts to feel claustrophobic&#8221;) set aside for his music work.</p>
<p><strong>7:52 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby uses a Mossberg question as an excuse to slam Jay Leno, whom he calls the &#8220;least prepared interviewer.&#8221; He fakes a Leno voice, and mock interviews: &#8220;So Moby, you have a new record. Tell me about it.&#8221; Mossberg interjects, &#8220;So I have a low bar?&#8221; to the delight of the crowd.</p>
<p><strong>7:53 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg asks Moby how he used technology in &#8220;Wait for Me.&#8221; Moby begins by explaining that while he loves technology, he don’t fetishize it like some of his friends. &#8220;I have an 18&#8243; flat screen TV. A bigger screen doesn&#8217;t make TV any better. &#8216;Family Guy&#8217; is still funny on a little TV. If it works and doesn&#8217;t cause me undue stress, I love it.&#8217;</p>
<p><strong>7:55 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby launches into an explanation of what  Pro Tools and plugins are, and how thanks to this nifty recording/mixing operating system, he can take prerecorded &#8220;notes&#8221; that have been recorded abroad, say, in places like Vienna, and then recreate a 60-piece orchestra on his keyboard.</p>
<p><strong>7:59 p.m.</strong>&#8211;On to issues of intellectual property. Moby says: &#8220;I don&#8217;t mind when people pirate my music&#8211;if you want to steal my music, more power to you.&#8221; Mossberg immediately asks, &#8220;Why?&#8221; And he deadpans, &#8220;Deep-seated emotional issues.&#8221; He then goes on to explain that personally, he&#8217;s so honored that people want to listen to his music, he doesn’t want to restrict access to it. &#8220;I don’t have alimony, I don’t need insulin…I don&#8217;t have crystal meth problems.&#8221; Thus, he personally doesn&#8217;t mind, but he can only speak for himself. But to clarify, he does want you to buy his album so his friends at the label are happy.</p>
<p><strong>8:04 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg and Moby discuss the RIAA’s decision to sue customers. Moby says that it&#8217;s never been cheaper to make music, videos, and promote albums. EMI, he thinks, broke even. So why are they alienating their customers?</p>
<p><strong>8:06 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Blind item alert! Moby says that a few years ago, he was talking to a record label head, and when he asked the top honcho about their iTunes plan for their biggest star&#8217;s newest album, he was told, oh, we&#8217;re going to wait a couple months.</p>
<p>Moby then launches into philosophy mode and brings up the is/ought fallacy to illustrate his point, noting that the current music model &#8220;underpins the failure of major labels&#8211;they think, it used to be this way, so it ought to be this way.&#8221; Their ethos is, &#8220;Please go away. Make the future die.&#8221; Mossberg suggests he write a song/album with that title. Moby quips back with &#8220;Young People Suck&#8221; as a potential label-inspired tune.</p>
<p><strong>8:12 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby adds a qualifier to his comments, touting Mute, his own record label. &#8220;Mute is wonderful, and they care about music&#8211;it&#8217;s the big major labels who have been egregiously bad stewards of music. It&#8217;s hard to feel bad for them when they&#8217;ve brought us some of the worst music ever created.&#8221; He then gets in a dig at Lars Ulrich of Metallica, saying that if he needs a &#8220;fur-lined walking humidor,&#8221; that’s him.</p>
<p><strong>8:15 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby asks the audience if he can get pedantic for a moment. They cheer their assent. He then launches into a story about the early days of the Beatles, a band that got &#8220;lucky&#8221; because everything they did was in mono. &#8220;The first &#8216;Meet the Beatles&#8217; was recorded in four hours. They played the songs and it was done.&#8221; He explains how this is not possible anymore.</p>
<p><strong>8:18 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Yay! Moving on to a discussion about  Auto-Tune, which &#8220;enables anyone to fake perfect pitch.&#8221; Moby declines to name names in his anecdotes, because he has enough feuds already, but singles out Cher’s &#8220;I Believe&#8221; as the first of the supremely auto-tuned songs, and mourns how kids can&#8217;t recognize real singing anymore. Next, a discussion of playback, aka the technology that failed Ashlee Simpson when she was reduced to her now infamous hoedown on &#8220;Saturday Night Live.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:23 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Memory lane for Mossberg. He recalls seeing the Supremes, and Simon &#038; Garfunkel in the &#8217;60s for $3/ticket in a gym, and how the concerts back then used to sound just like the album. But everything is much more complicated now.</p>
<p><strong>8:25 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby talks about how he plays to bigger crowds in Europe, and how he can enjoy the concert experience. Playing in front of a big crowd, he says, with big production values, is the musician&#8217;s equivalent of playing the big penis card.</p>
<p><strong>8:28 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg asks: When you make music, do you have to consider the fact that it&#8217;s going to be listened to on [Apple] iPods and [Microsoft] Zunes? Moby says sadly yes, and tells a story about how super-processed music works on the subway, because the noise of the L train doesn&#8217;t interfere with, say, a song by Rihanna, but the subtleties of Gershwin&#8217;s &#8220;Rhapsody in Blue&#8221; will get lost.</p>
<p><strong>8:32 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg moves on to playing a snippet of the song &#8220;Pale Horses&#8221; from &#8220;Wait for Me&#8221; because we&#8217;re running late, and Moby says he has to pee&#8211;&#8221;Syphilis is a demanding mistress.&#8221; Mossberg: &#8220;Bill Gates doesn&#8217;t say that to me…I can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;m defending Microsoft.” Moby: &#8220;I&#8217;m just saying the Zune is clumsy as hell.&#8221; [For those lacking the implied sarcasm, Moby clarifies later on that he does not, in fact, have syphilis.]</p>
<p>Moby on &#8220;Pale Horses&#8221; and many of his other songs: 80% of the work is done in a couple days, but it&#8217;s the finishing stuff that is what really takes a really long time. To get the job done, he holes himself with the music&#8211;&#8221;Hopefully, a more benign version of Ted Kaczynski during the creative process.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:40 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Audience Q&#038;A time. Moby is asked about his licensing deals, and says he doesn&#8217;t license music anymore, because he&#8217;s sick of being the whipping boy for the process. Which is ironic, because everyone&#8217;s selling out now. He adds that he initially licensed the music for &#8220;Play,&#8221; because it allowed more people to hear the album.</p>
<p><strong>8:46 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby interrupts a question-asker to comment on how he wishes the stage were against the left window like a previous panel he was on, so everyone could get a glimpse of the view. The questioner then proceeds to take out a Chilean flag and hold it up before asking Moby if there&#8217;s relationship between his music and the cosmos. The short answer? Yes.</p>
<p><strong>8:51 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Mossberg sums up the evening and offers kudos to Moby for sharing his time and process.</p>
<p><strong>8:52 p.m.</strong>&#8211;Moby plugs a new tour date in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. And good night everybody!</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Where is Microsoft (MSFT) spending its $100 million in marketing for its new Bing search service?</p>
<p>Well, here&#8217;s a photo that was forwarded to me showing an advertisement on top of a taxi in Manhattan of a goodbye message from Bing, as well as GE (GE) entertainment unit NBC, to the late pop legend, Michael Jackson.</p>
<p>It was a joint effort from Bing and NBC, said a Microsoft source. The software giant and NBC have a strong partnership surrounding the launch the search service.</p>
<p>Done by <a href="http://showmedia.com/#/taxis/">Show Media</a>, which specializes in this form of advertising, the text&#8211;with a picture from Jackson&#8217;s &#8220;Thriller&#8221; album&#8211;reads: &#8220;We will miss you Michael.&#8221;</p>
<p>Presumably, enough of a condolence to get fans to search about him on Bing&#8211;instead of on Google (GOOG) or Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;and get news updates from NBC&#8217;s many media outlets.</p>
<p>Jackson&#8217;s sudden death last week caused a massive surge of activity all over the Web, including at search engines. </p>

<p>For a tall man, Tim Armstrong has been on an awful lot of online companies&#8217; short lists.</p>
<p>For a big Web exec job, that is. Indeed, whenever one opens up in the Internet space, the 6-foot 3-inch Google ad sales exec always pops up on it as a possible candidate to lead a variety of digital companies and start-ups.</p>
<p>Finally today&#8211;after longtime speculation that Armstrong had long wanted and would eventually leave his post at Google (GOOG) in order to try his hand at being top dog&#8211;he <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090312/aol-gets-a-new-ceo-google-sales-boss-tim-armstrong/">took over as chairman and CEO of the once-mighty, but now-not-so-much, AOL</a>.</p>
<p>Armstrong, 38, will start at AOL on April 7.</p>
<p>&#8220;For me, it is a great opportunity to go to what I consider a top-five Internet brand,&#8221; said Armstrong, in an interview with BoomTown this afternoon, with a whole lot of the diplomacy and nice-guyness he is well known for at Google and in the online advertising industry. &#8220;I am looking forward to taking what I have learned at Google and seeing what I can bring to really help AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>Noting that for all its decline&#8211;pointed out by me&#8211;AOL was still one of the few &#8220;global Internet brands,&#8221; Armstrong said he thought there was still a lot of juice in the consumer appeal of AOL.</p>
<p>So much so, he added, that AOL owner Time Warner (TWX) has given him a lot of options for its future, from keeping it inside the larger media conglomerate (unlikely) to partnering with another company (less unlikely) to spinning it out (likely!).</p>
<p>&#8220;One of the things we discussed was making sure we were able to have the best outcome for AOL,&#8221; said Armstrong. &#8220;That could take the form of a lot of different paths.&#8221;</p>
<p>(Translation: As soon as the economy brightens, I am going to become a public company CEO, just like my soon-to-be-ex-boss Eric Schmidt!)</p>
<p>The <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090312/jeff-bewkes-lays-off-aol-ceo-and-president-in-a-new-york-minute/">move to put Armstrong in at AOL was sudden and swift</a>, and also more than a little cutthroat on the part of his new employer, which bounced current Chairman and CEO Randy Falco and President and COO Ron Grant without a lot of warning to them or any top exec at AOL.</p>
<p>While there has been much talk about when Time Warner would become weary of the pair&#8217;s management of AOL&#8211;which has been rocky (most especially their overpaying for the Bebo social-networking site, which others at Time Warner never got over)&#8211;their defenestration and Armstrong&#8217;s installation happened rather quickly.</p>
<p>And, indeed, Armstrong confirmed that the talks to take over at AOL had only started a few weeks ago, increasing in &#8220;intensity over the last week.&#8221;</p>
<p>So intense, for example, that Grant only found out he was being replaced this afternoon after a personal visit from Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who made a rare appearance at AOL&#8217;s downtown Manhattan HQ to deliver the bad news. </p>
<p>(One AOLer&#8217;s funny, but entirely imaginary, vision: Bewkes signed up Armstrong, whose Google office is right nearby AOL in New York, and then hightailed it over to AOL to drop the hammer before the ink was dry on the contract.)</p>
<p>Via a coup or not, nabbing Armstrong is indeed a coup&#8211;at least from a shiny resume point of view&#8211;for Bewkes, who has been struggling with what to do with AOL for a while. </p>
<p>While he often affably jokes about its many problems&#8211;from declining ad sales to management turmoil to, <em>it must be said</em>, increasing irrelevance&#8211;Bewkes has been trying to sell off AOL or turn the asset into something more valuable for far too long.</p>
<p>Bewkes knows Armstrong well, as Google is a major partner of AOL in search advertising, and Google also owns five percent of AOL, in a deal in which Armstrong was involved (and whose value the search giant recently marked down).</p>
<p>Armstrong said he was also close to Time Warner General Counsel Paul Cappuccio.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was a natural fit with AOL, since I know the company so well,&#8221; Armstrong said, adding he would spend his first weeks getting to know AOL&#8217;s employees and its products better, before making more concrete strategic decisions or changing any course setting of Falco&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Under Falco&#8217;s plan, AOL was focusing on a three-pronged strategy: social networking and communications (People Networks), content (MediaGlow) and advertising (Platform-A).</p>
<p>&#8220;In general, I do want to spend time with the staff,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Some of the stuff I have seen so far has actually paid off&#8230;and a lot of the new products show a lot of passion.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whether he can turn passion into blockbuster products is another story, and some are worried that Armstrong&#8217;s experience is too heavily weighted in ad sales rather than in development of killer services, which is what AOL might need to recover.</p>
<p>But Armstrong said he had a lot of other operational duties at that search giant, noting that &#8220;Google is a very complex business.&#8221;</p>
<p>And both current and former AOLers hope his ad experience will allow AOL to return to its strong premium advertising roots that were less focused on of late. In fact, Falco recently hired former Yahoo (YHOO) sales head Greg Coleman to do just that.</p>
<p>And Armstrong has a lot of support from unusual sectors too. Wrote former AOL head Jon Miller, who was, ironically, forced out by Bewkes in favor of Falco and Grant, to me in an unsolicited email: &#8220;Count me amongst the Armstrong fan club.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, many staff at AOL I spoke to today&#8211;whose morale has been buffeted by layoffs and ongoing bad news&#8211;seem genuinely thrilled to score such a prominent exec. </p>
<p>&#8220;I am so thrilled. We couldn&#8217;t change the DNA with Rondy on top,&#8221; said one exec, referring to the derisive nickname that Falco and Grant had within AOL, which combined their two first names. &#8220;I feel really positive.&#8221;</p>
<p>So does Armstrong. &#8220;I am really looking forward to running AOL,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>And personally, as a longtime and clearly obsessive watcher of AOL, I am looking forward to seeing him try.</p>

"Everyone talked about when Bewkes was going to run out of patience with Randy and Ron all the time, but no one knew it was coming now, since it had taken so long."]]></description>

<p>Let&#8217;s just say the firing of AOL CEO Randy Falco and President Ron Grant was not exactly expected&#8211;even if everyone thought it <em>should</em> happen&#8211;within the high ranks of the troubled online unit, until Time Warner (TWX) CEO Jeff Bewkes dropped the guillotine this afternoon in Manhattan.</p>
<p>And drop it he did, quickly lopping off the pair of executives Bewkes had installed himself. He <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090312/aol-gets-a-new-ceo-google-sales-boss-tim-armstrong/">replaced them with Tim Armstrong</a>, Google&#8217;s head of advertising sales, a man with a much brighter resume, for what is likely to be an attempt to spin out AOL now that merger options are moribund.</p>

<p>Grant, for example, only found out about the situation when Bewkes told him in person earlier today at AOL&#8217;s offices in lower Manhattan, said several sources. Bewkes has hardly ever been there&#8211;he has a stunning office at the Time Warner Center in midtown&#8211;although Armstrong&#8217;s office at Google is nearby.</p>
<p>Falco might have learned about the situation earlier, but several sources said no other top exec at AOL did until about 30 minutes ago.</p>
<p>The whole coup came, said several sources, from corporate, which swooped and made the moves swiftly, very quickly after signing the deal with Armstrong.</p>
<p>(Here is an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090312/new-aol-chairman-and-ceo-and-about-to-be-ex-googler-tim-armstrong-speaks/">interview I did this afternoon with Armstrong</a> after the appointment was announced.)</p>
<p>AOL PR did not seem to be aware of the move until this afternoon, and neither did its three top division heads: People Networks head Joanna Shields, MediaGlow President Bill Wilson or newly hired Platform-A ad leader Greg Coleman.</p>
<p>Yesterday, quite by coincidence, BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090310/rock-meet-hard-place-more-details-of-aol-layoffs-but-are-there-more-to-come/">wrote about the continued turmoil within AOL and the unhappiness with Falco, which was long-running</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;That’s caused a lot of people inside AOL and also a wider circle at Time Warner to increasingly point the finger of blame at AOL CEO Randy Falco, wondering if and when he will suffer too.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;Why Randy Falco gets to keep his job is a mystery to a lot of people,&#8217; said one top exec at another division.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, it is a mystery no longer, apparently, with Bewkes putting the high-profile Armstrong in place as AOL&#8217;s CEO and chairman, although he has been casting about for new leadership for a while, according to many sources, such as former Yahoo COO Dan Rosensweig.</p>
<p>AOL is in the midst of laying off 10 percent of its staff of 7,000, although many feel deeper cuts are needed, especially since Bewkes has been unable to complete a deal to sell it after a lot of trying.</p>
<p>Interest by Yahoo (YHOO) in merging with AOL, for example, has cooled and there seem to be no true suitors on the horizon. A spinoff of the division seems to be the most likely option.</p>
<p>Whether that includes a strategy reset for AOL or not is unclear.</p>
<p>Under Falco and Grant&#8211;who were derisively given the nickname Smithers and Burns from &#8220;The Simpsons,&#8221; and also &#8220;Rondy&#8221; by some inside the division who did not like them&#8211;AOL <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080313/bebo-by-the-not-so-big-numbers/?mod=ATD_search">paid $850 million for the Bebo social-networking site</a> last year, an overpriced move that has grated on many throughout Time Warner.</p>
<p>Under their plan, AOL was focusing on a three-pronged strategy: social networking and communications (People Networks), content (MediaGlow) and advertising (Platform-A).</p>
<p>But new Platform-A head (and former Yahoo sales exec) Coleman&#8211;whose business has to drive revenue growth&#8211;cannot perform miracles in such a weak environment no matter what cool new products and offerings either People Networks head Shields or MediaGlow president Wilson create.</p>
<p>Armstrong certainly knows sales, as head of sales efforts at Google (GOOG), although he has never operated a business as multi-faceted as AOL, which&#8211;despite its troubles&#8211;remains huge.</p>

<p>It wasn&#8217;t just Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer meeting in New York last week.</p>
<p>According to several sources close to the situation, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes rounded out the trio of chit-chatting execs, presumably gathered to discuss possible partnerships and other deals between and amongst the companies whose digital assets are among the largest on the Web.</p>
<p>Although the possibilities are numerous, exactly what Bostock, Ballmer and Bewkes&#8211;let&#8217;s call them the Busy B&#8217;s from here on out&#8211;were cooking up is unclear.</p>
<p>But for Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) and Time Warner (TWX), which owns the AOL online service, it is a meal that is probably long past due.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true given the struggles each has had with his online assets of late.</p>
<p>Some sort of alliance between the threesome could be a way each could solve those problems and more importantly, create a Web counterweight to the growing power of Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Last week, on the heels of Carol Bartz&#8217;s appointment as new Yahoo CEO, BoomTown wrote a post noting that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090113/is-microsoft-search-deal-with-yahoo-ticked-and-tied/">Microsoft was ready to deal in its long-sought-after effort to strike a search deal with Yahoo</a>. </p>
<p>Last year, the software giant launched a takeover battle for Yahoo, which was resisted and ultimately abandoned. But Microsoft never lost interest in doing an outright deal to buy Yahoo&#8217;s search assets or create a significant partnership around search.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been long been lukewarm to such an idea, first rejecting Microsoft outright in favor of a deal with Google.</p>
<p>Since its Google deal collapsed over regulatory concerns, Yahoo has still dragged its feet about the notion, with its board divided over the right course of action.</p>
<p>And, while <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090116/is-the-gut-bone-connected-to-the-knee-jerk-bone/">Bartz told Yahoo employees last week that her &#8220;gut&#8221;</a> did not favor the deal, most saw that more as a negotiating ploy than a signal that Yahoo was not at least somewhat interested.</p>
<p>It has to be, given that many of its investors and also Wall Street have been eager for Yahoo to make such an alliance.</p>
<p>Therefore, the <a href="http://valleywag.gawker.com/5132720/microsoft-ceo-yahoo-chairman-meet-in-new-york">sighting of Ballmer and Bostock at the Time Warner Center</a> in Manhattan together, first reported by Valleywag late last week, was a sign that relations between Yahoo and Microsoft were improving.</p>
<p>(The Ballmer/Bostock confab was also later <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/17/technology/companies/17yahoo.html?_r=1&#038;ref=business">confirmed by the New York Times</a>.)</p>
<p>But sources at all the companies have said Bewkes was also meeting with the pair, which makes it clearer than ever that a much bigger and more complex game might be afoot.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/american-idol-judges.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/american-idol-judges-300x224.jpg" alt="" title="american-idol-judges" width="250" height="190" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-8704" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of inevitable too, given that this group has done more back and forth blabbing and bickering than Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson on &#8220;American Idol.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Yahoo and AOL have also been involved in serious, but painfully prolonged, discussions to merge, talks that were tabled once Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang said in November that he was stepping down.</p>
<p>In addition, Microsoft has been interested in eventually renewing its bid for AOL&#8217;s search business, which is now run by Google. Microsoft lost out to Google the last time the contract was up.</p>
<p>It recently paid a small king&#8217;s ransom to become the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090108/the-entire-internal-microsoft-memo-on-new-dell-and-verizon-deal/">key search partner of both Dell (DELL) and Verizon Wireless</a> (VZ), distribution deals that have become one of Microsoft&#8217;s favored tactics to take some market share away from Google.</p>
<p>Microsoft even <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out/">hired a well-known Yahoo search techie, Qi Lu</a>, to head its digital efforts, mostly to turbocharge its search business.</p>
<p>But given that Google&#8217;s search share is over 70 percent now, which yields it a lion&#8217;s share of the search ad dollars, none of this has been enough for Microsoft to get true traction in the search game. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s why some sort of union with Yahoo is probably critical for Microsoft, since this would get it past the 20 percent share mark.</p>
<p>As for Bewkes, he has been mightily trying to unload AOL, which has had a long and painful history with Time Warner. </p>
<p>So it&#8217;s clear the trio had a lot to talk about.</p>
<p>And I hope they get creative this time, rather than just rehashing the same old ideas that have still not been consummated.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my suggestion, which is a bit nuts, to be sure, although variations of it have previously been considered by all the companies: </p>
<p>Instead of Yahoo doing the acquisition, which it can ill afford with its depressed stock price, Microsoft buys AOL for $4 billion to $5 billion. </p>
<p>It then quickly spins AOL&#8217;s content, advertising and communication assets into Yahoo, nabbing the search business, throws in some cash as an investment and perhaps even its MSN assets. Microsoft gets a large stake in the newco. </p>
<p>Time Warner gets the cash from the AOL sale and perhaps even a stake in the newco, along with perhaps striking some kind of interesting online deal for the rest of its copious media assets.</p>
<p>And Yahoo gets to own massive assets in content, communications and premium advertising on the Web. While it would lose search, Yahoo would also get a pile of money, along with enough key search data from Microsoft that it would drown in it.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/threestooges-background.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/01/threestooges-background-300x225.jpg" alt="" title="threestooges-background" width="250" height="180" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-8702" /></a></p>
<p>And, most importantly, Yahoo could focus on what it does best rather than get squeezed in a search arms race between Google and Microsoft.</p>
<p>And if the meeting among Bostock, Ballmer and Bewkes was only another chapter of the endless and unsuccessful talks that have so far lead exactly nowhere? </p>
<p>Well then, the three will eventually look more like the Three Stooges than anything else.</p>

<p>No matter, as I got a most excellent <em>free</em> tour of the Renzo Piano-designed building at 40th Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan and lunch last week from the Times&#8217;s longtime and sharp tech reporter Saul Hansell, whom I have known since AOL reigned supreme over the Web landscape.</p>
<p>(Apparently, his link-averse boss told him to watch me like a hawk on my visit, in case I might shoplift some secret tech news stories they were working on. <em>As if</em> the tiny but crack ATD blog team needs any kind of help from the big, bad Times!)</p>
<p>And, because I aim to annoy, I prodded Hansell into waxing a bit on the state of the Internet and the tech sector, from his new cubicle on the lower news floors of the really impressive Times HQ.</p>
<p>(Having worked in the sad-sack, grimy offices of two major newspapers, it is a revelation of what the newsroom of the future should look like.)</p>
<p>Listen up to what Hansell has to say, because while he is indeed worthy competition for <strong>ATD</strong>, the veteran reporter has been around the block and has picked up a thing or two.</p>
<p>Most importantly, he has also done an amazing job transforming himself in his new life as a blogger for the Times&#8217;s Bits blog.</p>

<p>I even took my mother, who was incredulous at the lines of New York natives waiting for the trendiest of smartphones. &#8220;Crazy&#8221; was her exact phraseology.</p>
<p>So, after a lovely weekend at the shore, I went back late Sunday night (without Mom!) to the same store, assuming it had all calmed down. </p>

<p>BoomTown landed at New York&#8217;s JFK Airport this morning and, of course, could not resist visiting the flagship Apple (AAPL) store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on iPhone 3G Day.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right! JesusPhone 2.0 is nigh!</p>
<p>(Well, <em>was</em> nigh, I guess, and apparently <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080711/ipocalypsenow/">unable to be activated due to system overload</a>.)</p>
<p>In any case, I did a particularly jumpy video of the doings at one of Apple&#8217;s most famous stores, as legions of New Yorkers waited in line for their cheaper, faster, prettier iPhone.</p>
<p>Added bonus: it includes an appearance at the end by my unimpressed-with-Steve-Jobs-worshipping-geeks mother, who goes by the name of&#8211;I am not kidding&#8211;<em>Lucky</em>.</p>

<p>In what will be seen as a new media coup, sources tell BoomTown that Britain&#8217;s <a href="http://www.gmgplc.co.uk/">Guardian Media Group</a> is set to announce this morning that it will buy the company that runs the high-profile digital media news site <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org">paidContent</a> for a price &#8220;north of $30 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>That price, though, includes an earn-out, sources said, which will depend on future performance of the company.</p>
<p>The paidContent site is owned by ContentNext and was founded by Publisher and Editor Rafat Ali in 2002.</p>
<p>With the motto,&#8221;The Economics of Content,&#8221; paidContent has been a pioneer in the online news space, doing high-quality reporting about online media and digital efforts by big media companies.</p>
<p>ContentNext has offices in Santa Monica, Calif., and Manhattan and operates several other sites, and also runs several conferences.</p>
<p>The company had reportedly been raising funding of several million dollars recently to fuel more expansion.</p>
<p>But ContentNext&#8217;s only financial backer so far has been Alan Patricof&#8217;s Greycroft Partners, which invested an undisclosed amount in 2006.</p>
<p>Longtime digital media exec Larry Kramer is on its board and ContentNext recently hired media exec Nathan Richardson as its CEO.</p>
<p>Sources said ContentNext would continue being run independently after the Guardian purchase.</p>
<p>This sale comes after the mid-May sale of Ars Technica, a much larger tech-focused site, to Condé Nast for a reported $25 million.</p>

<p>In its ongoing bid to prove there is a robust and sustainable advertising business in the social-networking space, widget-maker Slide opened a New York City office and hired a big-deal online ad exec.</p>
<p>Of course, because it has to be hip, the office is in the always trendy West Village, instead of uptown in Manhattan on Madison Avenue.</p>
<p>The new director of ad sales is Jason Bitensky, who comes to Slide from his post as director of national sales at AOL (TWX) Media Networks/Platform-A. Previous to that, he worked at Comcast (CMCSA).</p>
<p>Until this hire, Slide had only four salespeople, all located at its San Francisco HQ, who sold campaigns and sponsorships for its third-party apps that are hugely popular on sites like Facebook and MySpace (NWS).</p>
<p>Advertisers are most definitely intrigued, experimenting all over the place and interested in different ways of engaging with consumers.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, they are still using tiny &#8220;innovation&#8221; budgets to test the space and have still not unlocked the treasure chests of big bucks that go to television. </p>
<p>In fact, here is an interesting <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121263403691747425.html">story on the ad issues apps-makers face in The Wall Street Journal</a> tomorrow.</p>
<p>The <em>not-so-much-money</em> quote: &#8220;The push by application companies means more players are competing over what is a relatively small pie. In 2007, U.S. marketers spent $600 million advertising on social media, a sliver of the $18 billion spent on interactive advertising that year, according to Forrester Research. The number is forecast to spike to $6.9 billion by 2012.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, said Max Levchin, CEO of Slide, about the move in a statement: &#8220;The success of campaigns on our popular products, such as SuperPoke!, Top Friends and FunWall, has attracted the attention of not only top brands, but also top talent like Jason.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown shall agree to disagree with our favorite widget king about SuperPoke&#8217;s potential as an ad vehicle. </p>
<p>But it is entirely true that Slide and other apps-makers have to convince big brands that the social-networking phenomenon is here to stay and is effective, well beyond its viral popularity and huge valuations given to companies in the space.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, Slide&#8211;founded in 2005&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080118/slip-sliding-into-a-fortune/">got a $50 million round of funding that valued the company at $550 million</a>.</p>
