<p>A new survey that should surprise only the people behind the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071206/mark-sorry-zuckerbergs-beacon-memo-boomtown-decodes-it-so-you-don’t-have-to/">Beacon debacle</a> shows that a majority of Americans of all ages don&#8217;t like being tracked online by advertisers.</p>
<p>In related stating-the-obvious news, Americans also find Jon and Kate Gosselin super-annoying.</p>
<p>Actually, the independent poll, titled &#8220;Americans Reject Tailored Advertising,&#8221; by a passel of academics at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California at Berkeley&#8211;which was <a href="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/business/20090929-Tailored_Advertising.pdf">first handed over to the New York Times</a> and will be released today&#8211;comes at a very good time given all the focus on online privacy of late among lawmakers and regulators.</p>
<p>While advertisers have been trying to avoid a lot of stringent laws in this arena, it seems clear from the survey that most consumers&#8211;66 percent&#8211;don&#8217;t like being followed around and hate it more the more they know about said stalking by marketers.</p>
<p>Noted the report:</p>
<p>&#8220;It is hard to escape the conclusion that our survey is tapping into a deep concern by Americans that marketers’ tailoring of ads for them and various forms of tracking that informs those personalizations are wrong&#8230;.Whatever the reasons, our findings suggest that if Americans could vote on behavioral targeting today, they would shut it down.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not that Americans actually know a lot about how online behavorial targeting works. Many surveyed had little knowledge of the tactics, but most did want a law that would give them the right to know what, say, the social networking minions of Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg know about them.</p>
<p>In other words, consumers want transparency and control of their data, which&#8211;at the pace things are going&#8211;continues to spin out of their grasp.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no question that Spotify is the latest hot start-up of the moment, which would be super annoying to BoomTown&#8211;who is easily irked by never-ending froth around Web 2.0 companies&#8211;if co-founder Daniel Ek were not so sharp and the digital-music-on-demand service he created not so nifty.</p>
<p>But, indeed, Ek turned out to be a very refreshing and level-headed serial entrepreneur in an interview I had with him yesterday in London, where <a href="http://www.spotify.com">Spotify</a> has an office. </p>
<p>While Spotify is only available in certain countries in Europe, Ek promises it will soon come to the U.S., presumably when he finishes negotiating with the major music labels&#8211;which all reportedly hold stakes in Spotify.</p>
<p>They would like it, given that Spotify is essentially a kind of <em>not</em>-iTunes, a label-friendlier version of the popular music-downloading software and service from Apple (AAPL).</p>
<p>So, it is probably likely Spotify will get the green light for its American invasion, especially given its strong performance in under a year, with several million users, mostly in the U.K., as well as Germany and Sweden.</p>
<p>Those consumers seem to like the simple and light software application that lets one find and play a terrific range of music instantly. (Spotify also recently released an iPhone app for mobile users.)</p>
<p>The innovative service is somewhat social and too light on recommendations, but the true appeal is the quick ability to build an eclectic online music library and discover new songs without having to spend a lot buying tracks.</p>
<p>Those who pay a monthly fee get those millions of songs without advertising, while those who use the free version get banner and audio ads. Spotify also makes money from users downloading songs and by spurring physical sales.</p>
<p>While it is still unclear if all this adds up to a big business&#8211;the online music business has been notoriously deadly to start-ups&#8211;investors have pumped tens of millions of dollars and given Spotify an alleged $250 million.</p>
<p>The start-up has also attracted the attention of U.S. Web hotshots, including Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who complimented it on his status update recently.</p>
<p>Other big companies are also likely to take a look-see at Spotify for acquisition.</p>
<p>The 26-year-old Ek insists he is intent on building a huge standalone business. Famous last words, of course, but he talks a good game, as you can see in this video interview:</p>

<p>The board of <a href="http://www.ilike.com">iLike</a> planned a meeting earlier tonight to go over a buyout offer by MySpace, several sources close to the situation said. But it was suddenly canceled because of some thorny tax implications related to the talent-retention part of the deal to purchase the social music start-up. </p>
<p>This does not mean the pending acquisition is in jeopardy, sources said, and it could be on track to be signed as early as today, barring any more complications.</p>
<p>That is what both iLike and MySpace execs are hoping, said sources, one of whom described the outstanding issues as a &#8220;technicality.&#8221;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s also been unclear is the actual price the social networking giant is paying for iLike, which has been reported as about $20 million.</p>
<p>In fact, only $13.5 million will be paid upfront in cash, with about $8 million of that money likely going to one of its major shareholders, Ticketmaster Entertainment (TKTM), due to its preferred shares.</p>
<p>Another $6 million has been promised by MySpace in forward payments to retain some key employees&#8211;including iLike co-founders and twin brothers Ali and Hadi Partovi.</p>
<p>Although those employees can remain in Seattle, where iLike has its HQ, they must stay employed at Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace for two and a half years to get their money. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s that talent part of the deal that caused the Partovis to cancel the iLike board meeting, which they explained to key investors was necessary due to some confusion over how the money paid to these employees would be taxed.</p>
<p>A person briefed on the issue said that if it was taxed as compensation, it would have a much higher tax rate than if it were considered long-term capital gains.</p>
<p>The Partovis said in the email that they were working on the problem with their advisers on the sale, Allen &#038; Co., as well as with lawyers and accountants. </p>
<p>Tax snafus in the middle of a sale are not exactly the way the entrepreneurial Partovis envisioned it was going to go for iLike (see my various video interview related to iLike below) when they created the compelling music sharing and recommendation service in 2006. </p>
<p>After only a few years, the innovative start-up claims it has 50 million registered users overall.</p>
<p>A lot of that growth was due to iLike quickly becoming one of the most popular widgets on social networking sites like Facebook, where it has also been the top music application, with 10 million active monthly users.</p>
<p>The Partovis&#8211;who once were close with execs at Facebook (see my party video below), particularly founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8211;placed great faith in its growth lifting all Web 2.0 boats.</p>
<p>It did not turn out that way, though, especially from the important financial point of view, and iLike scrambled to diversify.</p>
<p>The iLike service recently began offering a music downloading service, for example, as well as other such features, all of which would be attractive to the music-centric focus at MySpace.</p>

<p>Once an Internet sensation, MySpace has been struggling to restructure itself after losing momentum and buzz in recent years, as well as a huge advertising revenue drop in its most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Its owner, News Corp. (NWS), replaced its founders with new management four months ago, including former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta as CEO.  </p>
<p>After making major staff layoffs and rejiggering management, Van Natta and his new team have been working on an overhaul of the MySpace product and seem to be refocusing it to become a global music and entertainment service.</p>
<p>MySpace also has a joint venture with major music labels, MySpace Music, which has been trying to attract consumers and build a viable business. Sources said MySpace Music could also buy into the iLike deal or simply license its technology to improve its features.</p>
<p>Thus, purchasing iLike would fit in well with MySpace&#8217;s overall plans.</p>
<p>And iLike has also been in need of a fix itself.</p>
<p>For all its popularity, especially on Facebook, it has moved slowly toward profitabilty, and its $17 million in funding has been dwindling, as has its viability as a standalone company. </p>
<p>Back in more frothy Web 2.0 days, iLike&#8217;s generous funding gave it a valuation of more than $50 million, which has also lost steam over time and as the economy has worsened.</p>
<p>In the last quarter of fiscal 2008, for example, Ticketmaster wrote down its $13 million investment by $6 million.</p>
<p>Tensions between its execs and iLike have gotten worse over time, although some thought at one time that Ticketmaster would buy iLike.</p>
<p>No longer, which is why the founders turned to Allen &#038; Co., as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081124/web-2o-music-pioneer-ilike-looking-for-buyers">MediaMemo reported as far back as November</a>, to find another big investor or buyer.</p>
<p>Wrote Peter Kafka: &#8220;Delivering free music on the Web has so far proven to be a high-cost, low-revenue endeavor&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>So, the New York deal-making firm ginned up a small group of suitors, which included Facebook, Activision Blizzard (ATVI) and Microsoft (MSFT), as well as MySpace.</p>
<p>Of the three, Activision was most serious, with interest in integrating iLike&#8217;s community and technology tools with its Guitar Hero franchise. </p>
<p>But Activision never actually made a formal bid, said sources. </p>
<p>Both Microsoft and Facebook also considered the purchase, but sources said they would only offer stock in a deal. But iLike wanted cash in the deal.</p>
<p>The Partovis were also was wary about working at either place.</p>
<p>Both Partovis, for example, had worked at Microsoft (Ali after selling it LinkExchange in 1998 for $265 million; Hadi several times, once following Microsoft&#8217;s acquisition of Tellme Networks, which he co-founded). </p>
<p>As it has turned out, in its short life, iLike&#8217;s last, best alternative is apparently MySpace.</p>
<p>&#8220;Look, iLike has been shopped around for a while, and while the team and technology are great, it only has one choice and that&#8217;s to be sold,&#8221; said one person involved in the various scenarios. &#8220;The question for the buyer then is whether it was worth it to pay up or just move on and do it ourselves.&#8221;</p>
<p>So until the bean counters settle this IRS nightmare, here is my <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080723/kara-visits-ilike-in-seattle/">video interview with Hadi Partovi</a> about a year ago at iLike&#8217;s HQ in the Capitol Hill section of Seattle, when times were a little more hopeful:</p>

<p>Yes, that&#8217;s Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in shorts, knees and all, in a picture taken right &#8220;after signing the papers&#8221; to acquire FriendFeed for $50 million. The deal was announced today.</p>
<p>One of FriendFeed&#8217;s founders, Paul Buchheit, <a href="http://friendfeed.com/paul/53c6e787/after-signing-papers">posted them on his account</a> at the online content-sharing site, to much merry comment.</p>
<p>They look like they were taken at night in someone&#8217;s driveway in Silicon Valley (nice fence!), although the person who took the shots is not identified.</p>
<p>(BoomTown is assuming it was not Twitter&#8217;s Biz Stone, since it would be a total geek rumble.)</p>

<p>Buchheit said in a comment that the last co-founder, Sanjeev Singh, was boarding a plane and was not there.</p>
<p>In the second picture, below, social networking czar Zuckerberg is seen bathed in the light of one of his very best friends, an Apple (AAPL) MacBook Pro, yukking it up with his new minions&#8211;ex-Google (GOOG) execs, who will soon discover that one Mark decree is equal to one Sergey order plus one Larry declaration from on high.</p>

<p>Facebook said today it is acquiring FriendFeed, the online content-sharing site.</p>
<p>It is a logical fit for the huge social networking site, which has lagged behind microblogging kingpin Twitter in the real-time news, search and status game of perception in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Mountain View, Calif.-based FriendFeed has also trailed well behind Twitter, despite its top-notch pedigree of ex-Google (GOOG) staffers, such as Paul Buchheit and Bret Taylor. The other ex-Google co-founders of FriendFeed are Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh.</p>
<p>Benchmark Capital and angel investors had put about $5 million into the start-up, which had been a darling among the digerati.</p>
<p>Despite that, the start-up only broke one million unique visitors recently, according to several reports, while San Francisco-based Twitter was reported to have upward of 44 million in June. </p>
<p>But FriendFeed will surely get a turbocharge from its Facebook ownership, especially as its technology is fed to its 250 million users. </p>
<p>While Facebook&#8211;which is based in Palo Alto, Calif.&#8211;has added some of the same functionality that FriendFeed has innovated into its famous News Feed, it will surely get its own boost from adding FriendFeed&#8217;s dozen employees, 11 of whom are engineers.</p>
<p>Terms were not disclosed, but the purchase price is likely well under the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081124/when-twitter-met-facebook-the-acquisition-deal-that-fail-whaled">$500 million Facebook offered Twitter last fall</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, sources estimate to me that the price was about $50 million in cash and stock for the company, which was founded in 2007.</p>
<p>It is also unclear what will happen to the standalone FriendFeed service in the long run, although Taylor said in an uber-cute blog post (see below) that it would remain intact for now.</p>
<p>This move, although prominently unmentioned by Facebook in its full press release below, is most certainly a shot across Twitter&#8217;s bow.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/press/releases.php?p=116581">official word from Facebook</a>, as well as that <a href="http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009/08/friendfeed-accepts-facebook-friend.html">blog post by FriendFeed&#8217;s Taylor</a> about the acquisition:</p>

As part of the agreement, all FriendFeed employees will join Facebook and FriendFeed’s four founders will hold senior roles on Facebook&#8217;s engineering and product teams.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook and FriendFeed share a common vision of giving people tools to share and connect with their friends,&#8221; said Bret Taylor, a FriendFeed co-founder and, previously, the group product manager who launched Google Maps. &#8220;We can&#8217;t wait to join the team and bring many of the innovations we&#8217;ve developed at FriendFeed to Facebook’s 250 million users around the world.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;As we spent time with Mark and his leadership team, we were impressed by the open, creative culture they&#8217;ve built and their desire to have us contribute to it,&#8221; said Paul Buchheit, another FriendFeed co-founder. Buchheit, the Google engineer behind Gmail and the originator of Google&#8217;s &#8220;Don’t be evil&#8221; motto, added, &#8220;It was immediately obvious to us how passionate Facebook’s engineers are about creating simple, ground-breaking ways for people to share, and we are extremely excited to join such a like-minded group.&#8221;</p>
<p>Taylor and Buchheit founded FriendFeed along with Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh in October 2007 after all four played key roles at Google for products like Gmail and Google Maps. At FriendFeed, they&#8217;ve brought together a world-class team of engineers and designers.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Since I first tried FriendFeed, I&#8217;ve admired their team for creating such a simple and elegant service for people to share information,&#8221; said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO.  &#8220;As this shows, our culture continues to make Facebook a place where the best engineers come to build things quickly that lots of people will use.&#8221;</p>
<p>FriendFeed is based in Mountain View, Calif. and has 12 employees.  FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being as the teams determine the longer term plans for the product.  </p>

<p>In recent days, the focus at both Yahoo (YHOO) and MySpace, a division of News Corp. (NWS), has been on cost cuts, management rejiggering and, of course, layoffs, as new leaders at each Web giant are trying mightily to push the reset button. (News Corp owns Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)</p>
<p>No surprise, their efforts have gotten a lot of attention and have been the subject of a lot of coverage (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090415/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-one-yahoo-management-and-staff-set-on-shuffle-again">here for Yahoo</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090710/digital-musical-chairs-at-myspace-and-fim-keeps-going-and-going-and-going">here for MySpace</a>).</p>
<p>But, as those clean-up efforts wrap up, both have to show a whole lot more than that if either is to truly succeed at their tasks&#8211;which is to make both services much more relevant and exciting in the fast-changing Web arena.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/23263682jpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/23263682jpg.jpeg" alt="23263682jpg" title="23263682jpg" width="200" height="250" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-15874" /></a></p>
<p>While Yahoo and MySpace remain huge Web properties&#8211;and Yahoo, in particular, is very profitable in comparison to most Internet outfits&#8211;the widespread perception across the digital sector for too long now is that they are both tired in some significant ways and in desperate need of innovation.</p>
<p>Their big tasks include an overhaul of product offerings and features, a refreshing of brand and, most importantly, a strategic rethink that will set them on a new course for the next several years.</p>
<p>This is not a new thing in the Internet space, which has seen once-popular companies fall by the wayside as their products have gotten dull and consumers weary.  </p>
<p>AOL&#8211;the Time Warner (TWX) unit whose new CEO, Tim Armstrong, is trying to reinvigorate that iconic but deeply tarnished brand too&#8211;is the classic example of this problem. But there have been too many that either hobble along, get subsumed into a larger company or just wither and die.</p>
<p>Sudden death is not likely to be the case for either Yahoo or MySpace, but time is most definitely running out for the pair to show some true product pizzazz and a strategic road map. </p>

<p>At Yahoo, most of the glitter thus far has come from the personality and charms of CEO Carol Bartz (pictured here), who has been hard at work projecting an image of moxie and decisiveness in her efforts to get some momentum at the turmoil-plagued company.</p>
<p>Replacing former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang, Bartz has largely been busy cutting staff, pruning products that she recently dubbed &#8220;space debris&#8221; and rounding out her executive staff.</p>
<p>She&#8217;s also been prepping a new branding campaign to accompany Yahoo&#8217;s overhauled front page, which is set for the fall.</p>
<p>But, as the famous Peggy Lee song (see video below) goes: &#8220;Is that all there is, is that all there is?/If that&#8217;s all there is my friends, then let&#8217;s keep dancing/Let&#8217;s break out the booze and have a ball/If that&#8217;s all there is.&#8221;</p>

<p>But breaking out the booze and having a ball is actually not such a bad idea. To my mind, instead of tweaking what is there and emphasizing what it has been, Yahoo now has the chance to just go for broke and boldly make some dramatic choices.  </p>
<p>That is especially true if it forgoes a search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), since Yahoo is going to have to do more than just what it already does better.</p>
<p>Interestingly, it is Microsoft, with its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090715/another-bing-boost-comscore-says-microsoft-search-share-up-in-june/">well-reviewed new Bing search service</a>, that seems the most aggressively innovative these days.</p>
<p>So, why not, for example, make a shocking move, say, into the premium online video space? Yahoo certainly could pick up some damaged goods, like Veoh and Joost, on the cheap.</p>
<p>But what about buying the early winner: Hulu?</p>
<p>While the three studios that are its joint owners (the fourth owner is Providence Equity Partners)&#8211;News Corp., Disney (DIS) and GE (GE) unit NBC Universal&#8211;don&#8217;t seem inclined to sell, many sources close to the company said they most certainly would for the right price and perhaps a stake in Yahoo too.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/hulu-logojpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/hulu-logojpg-250x250.jpg" alt="hulu-logojpg" title="hulu-logojpg" width="250" height="250" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-15880" /></a></p>
<p>Yahoo has been one of Hulu&#8217;s many distribution partners, but that effort has been lackluster. As owner, it would surely point its vast traffic and tech resources at Hulu to good effect.</p>
<p>In this kind of scenario, Google (GOOG) and Comcast (CMCSA) are also contenders for Hulu, but it is only Yahoo that has the truly better record of being able to create, manage and distribute Web content.</p>
<p>Plus, you could call it: HuHoo or YaLu or, better still, HooLu.</p>
<p>There are lots of ideas along these lines for Yahoo, but the overarching idea is to dominate in areas its rivals do not.</p>
<p>For MySpace, which was the dominator until rival Facebook cleaned its clock and then some, it is both a crisis of identity, a broken consumer experience and technology that needs a major overhaul.</p>
<p>It is hard to say what MySpace is, except really noisy. While the music part of that is good, the idea of making it hip again seems well-nigh impossible.</p>
<p>But it could be useful as an entertainment hub where it is fun to be. News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch raised this concept recently, in fact, and it is a good one.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Facebook is aggressively <em>un-fun</em>, with a fascist design sensibility and a thick ethos of utility and enforced busy-ness. Whenever I use it, I always start to feel like I am 23 minutes late.</p>
<p>There really is no good overall and unified entertainment hub on the Web in a massive way&#8211;one that aggregates all kinds of interests. I would, for example, love a place where I could easily live in a &#8220;Gossip Girl&#8221; universe. </p>
<p>Best of all, such a direction moves MySpace well away from Facebook, where is needs to get pronto.</p>

<p>MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta (pictured here) said as much in a memo to employees yesterday: </p>
<p>&#8220;As I&#8217;ve said before, simplifying and unifying our site is fundamental to our success going forward. MySpace should feel like one platform&#8211;not 15 sites loosely stitched together. We consider our diverse content offering a strength but too many logos and disorganized verticals makes the site difficult to navigate and creates confusion about our brand identity. Our users don&#8217;t know if we’re a social portal, a music site, or an entertainment hub.&#8221;</p>
<p>In her own memo last week, Bartz also talked about the need for speed and definition of Yahoo:</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve noticed that since the reorg, people seem like they&#8217;re waiting for something. I&#8217;m not sure if it&#8217;s a sugar-low or what, but we need to stop waiting and get moving. Good things do not come to those who wait, they come to those who make things happen.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, per Marc Andreessen, good things come to those who make things. Wonderful things, fun things, memorable things and, if you are Steve Jobs, just one more thing.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just hope in the case of Yahoo and MySpace, they don&#8217;t settle for just <em>any</em> thing.</p>

<p><strong>[UPDATED: With news that employees can sell up to 20 percent of their shares.]</strong></p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, current and former employees of Facebook are now going to be able to sell up to 20 percent of their common shares.</p>
<p>It is part of a $100 million add-on investment in the social networking company by the Russian investors who recently put $200 million into the company for preferred shares.</p>
<p>That <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090526/da-facebook-takes-200-million-from-russian-investors-at-10-billion-valuation">investment a month ago by Digital Sky Technologies was valued at $10 billion</a>, since those shares have various special rights, depending on what was negotiated.</p>
<p>The new tender offer by DST values the company at $6.5 billion for the common shares, or $14.77 a share. The last common share valuation of the company was around $4 billion.</p>
<p>The move has been expected for Facebook employees since DST made its first investment.</p>
<p>It will allow them to monetize shares, since the company is not likely to go public for at least a year or more.</p>
<p>Employees have 20 days to decide to take the offer or not and can only sell up to 20 percent of their stock&#8211;in other words, they cannot cash out completely.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can afford a down payment on a house now,&#8221; said one longtime employee, who is typical of many. &#8220;But not a <em>really</em> big house.&#8221;</p>
<p>But the top leadership of Facebook, such as CEO Mark Zuckerberg or COO Sheryl Sandberg, are not eligible to sell shares.</p>
<p>Facebook confirmed the DST investment, with a statement from Zuckerberg:</p>
<p>&#8220;While individuals must make their own decisions about participating in this program, I&#8217;m pleased that the price DST is offering is much greater than the price originally considered last fall. This is recognition of Facebook&#8217;s growth and progress towards making the world more open and connected.&#8221;</p>
<p>If fully accepted by those employees eligible, it will give DST 1.54 percent more of Facebook, for a total of 3.5 percent of the company. </p>
<p>That makes DST&#8211;based in London and Moscow&#8211;one of the bigger Facebook investors, with a stake larger than one owned by Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>The software giant invested $250 million in Facebook for preferred shares in 2007, but the valuation was then $15 billion. That huge figure was due to a competing bid from archrival Google (GOOG) at the time.</p>
<p>In any case, neither DST nor Microsoft got a board seat or “special observer rights” in return for its money.</p>

<p>Facebook picked a new CFO quietly, after its cloddish public parting with longtime top financial exec Gideon Yu earlier this year.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially">Facebook said in late March it was looking for a CFO with &#8220;public company experience,&#8221;</a> and it seems to have gotten one in former Genentech CFO David Ebersman.</p>
<p>(He is pictured here&#8211;is it just me or does he look a lot like an older version of the man he will be reporting to, Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg?)</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting choice of a high-profile exec for the job at the headed-for-an-IPO-someday social-networking company, and one from outside the Web sector.</p>
<p>And, indeed, with the addition of Ebersman, Facebook inches ever closer to a public offering.</p>
<p>It is also a good move for Ebersman, who has been at the biotech firm for almost 15 years. But the South San Francisco-based Genentech was acquired in March by Hoffman-La Roche, which already has a CFO.</p>
<p>Ebersman, who will formally start in September, will oversee Facebook&#8217;s finance, accounting, investor relations and real estate functions and will also be part of the Palo Alto, Calif., company&#8217;s executive management team.</p>
<p>Former Netscape exec and VC <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/former-netscape-cfo-peter-currie-will-be-new-facebook-financial-adviser-until-new-cfo-is-found">Peter Currie has served as a stand-in</a> for Yu since he left, although has not been an active financial exec. </p>

<blockquote class=memo><p> PALO ALTO, Calif.&#8211;June 29, 2009&#8211;Facebook today announced that David Ebersman, the former executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of Genentech, the pioneering biotechnology firm recently acquired by Roche, will become the company’s chief financial officer. </p>
<p>Ebersman will report to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Founder Mark Zuckerberg. He will oversee Facebook’s finance, accounting, investor relations, and real estate functions. He also becomes a part of the company’s executive management team, which directs all aspects of company strategy, planning and operations. Ebersman will formally start in September 2009.</p>
<p>“We received a lot of interest in the CFO position and had the opportunity to meet with many impressive candidates,” said Mark Zuckerberg. “We quickly recognized that David was the right person for Facebook. He was Genentech&#8217;s CFO while revenue tripled, and his success in scaling the finance organization of a fast growing company will be important to Facebook.” </p>
<p>“After meeting with Mark and the rest of the team, I was thoroughly impressed with everyone’s drive and sense of purpose to help people connect and share,“ noted Ebersman. “Mark is constantly pushing the company forward and he’s assembled a world-class team that is achieving remarkable results both for its users and as a business. I’m excited to join this effort and this new industry.”</p>
<p>Ebersman worked at Genentech for nearly 15 years. He served as the firm’s executive vice president and CFO from 2006 through April 2009, when Roche Group acquired the company. Prior to joining the company’s finance organization, he was senior vice president of Product Operations. He joined Genentech as a business development analyst. Previously, he was a research analyst at Oppenheimer &#038; Company Inc.</p></blockquote>

<p>But, so far I have come up peanuts in grabbing an early copy of Mezrich&#8217;s tome, &#8220;The Accidental Billionaires,&#8221; which is set to come out July 14.</p>
<p>Facebook is not pleased, of course, and will likely be challenging Mezrich&#8217;s work as specious dreck. But the drama around the book should be interesting, to say the least.</p>
<p>More so, since this week also came news that actors <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10271662-36.html">Michael Cera and Shia LaBeouf</a> are being considered to play founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and that <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118005289.html?categoryid=13&#038;cs=1&#038;nid=2854">David Fincher</a>, the director of the lugubrious Brad Pitt snoozer, &#8220;The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,&#8221; is &#8220;attached&#8221; to the movie version. </p>
<p>Even better: &#8220;West Wing&#8221; creator  Aaron Sorkin will pen it and actor Kevin Spacey will produce the Columbia Pictures film, which will be called &#8220;The Social Network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, Hollywood sure came up with an original title!  </p>
<p>It certainly does not signal the juiciness of the proposal for the book&#8211;which did manage to leak out last year&#8211;with a lot of tale tales in it that seem to have pretty much tracked on its oddly purple subtitle of &#8220;The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.&#8221;</p>
<p>The cover&#8211;which you can see on the book&#8217;s<a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Accidental-Billionaires-by-Ben-Mezrich/64052888061"> Facebook page</a> (the delicious gall of Mezrich!)&#8211;features a spilled martini glass and a red bra flung nearby.</p>
<p>Martinis? Red bras? Sex? Facebook? <em>Really?</em></p>

<p>Obviously, Mezrich has not actually met Zuckerberg, who is a very nice geekish young man, but who has approximately the sex appeal of a rack of Facebook servers.</p>
<p>Powerful yes! Spockish? Yes! Sexy? Um, no, no, no.</p>
<p>I will not even begin to parse the red bra thing, although I am attributing the martinis to stylish former COO (and now MySpace CEO) Owen Van Natta.  </p>
<p>But, apparently, the sex part seems to have to do with Zuckerberg starting the company with others while an undergrad at Harvard University, as a scheme to meet some ladies.</p>
<p>I would say there are easier ways to attract the womenfolk&#8211;not that I could give tips or anything&#8211;but whatever!</p>
<p>Thus, since I cannot get my mitts on the book (<em>yet!</em>), here&#8217;s my list of 10 completely made-up, utterly fabricated, just-call-me-Jayson-Blair things that should be in the book. </p>
<p><strong>10.)</strong> Facebook was actually going to be called OnlyPrettyLadyFacebook, but cooler heads prevailed.</p>

<p>Wait, that actually happened, and now some Russians are even investors.</p>
<p>Long live the Zuckrepublic of Palo Alto!</p>
<p><strong>8.)</strong> Reason for stealing, <em>oops</em>, borrowing, <em>oops</em> again, completely separately developing an exact replica of ConnectU social network at Harvard:</p>
<p>The Olympically muscle-headed Winklevoss twins used to beat up the brainy Zuckerberg on his way back to the dorm, prompting a &#8220;Revenge of the Nerds&#8221; plot line.</p>
<p><strong>7.)</strong> Facebook&#8217;s Beacon advertising? <em>All</em> Randi Zuckerberg&#8217;s idea, so she could find out what she was getting for her birthday from her billionaire-on-paper brother.</p>
<p><strong>6.)</strong> Zuckerberg&#8217;s famous flip-flops were made in China under dubious working conditions. Wait, that&#8217;s true too.</p>

<p><strong>5.)</strong> The 20-something Zuckerberg is actually 93 years old, a real-life version of Benjamin Button, which would explain the social awkwardness and staring-into-space-sometimes thing.</p>
<p><strong>4.)</strong> The no-breast-feeding-pictures controversy pretty much proves no one is interested in bras or, more precisely, what goes in them at Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>3.)</strong> COO Sheryl Sandberg is a cyborg sent to Facebook from Google for purposes of infiltration. She and her crafty sidekick, Elliott Schrage, will become self-aware in 2012 and hunt down Zuckerberg in a thrilling chase that will also become a movie.</p>
<p><strong>2.)</strong> The sex, drugs and rock-and-roll stuff actually all took place at MySpace, which really pisses off certifiably dashing co-Founders Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson because, once again, Zuckerberg stole their mojo!</p>

<p><strong>1.)</strong> This work of fiction, <em>oops</em>, &#8220;fact&#8221;-ion, <em>oops</em> again, nonfiction, is probably not going to sell many copies because it will mysteriously be uploaded in its entirety by a widget that will distribute it free to Facebook&#8217;s 200 million plus users while simultaneously SuperDuperPoking Mezrich, by throwing <em>real</em> sheep at him. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t warn you, Ben.</p>
<p>(By the way, here is an extra for you: The $15 billion valuation for Facebook, along with all the other Web 2.0 ones? Totally true. Just ask any VC.)</p>

<p>At 9:01 p.m. PDT on Friday, the giant Silicon Valley-based social-networking site will allow its 200 million members to log in and claim a friendlier username for part of their URLs instead of the long string of gibberish that is now there.</p>
<p>That a lot of sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and others already allow you to do this is not really the point.</p>
<p>But, because it is about people&#8217;s names and because it is certain to be chaotic in its execution, I think we can pretty much slap the moniker &#8220;URLgate&#8221; on this one and just call it a night.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, in an email tonight inviting media to an open house to see its new HQ building in Palo Alto, Calif., the PR team at Facebook&#8211;which often gets into hot water over various public snafus that arise at the young company with regularity&#8211;is mightily trying to make nice with journalists to perhaps head off any bloggish bellyaching.</p>
<p>They wrote: &#8220;We wanted to let you know that we decided to reserve usernames for the key journalists and outlets we work with. Look out for an email from someone on the communications team with more details.” </p>
<p>Firestorm of disgruntlement from those who did not make the list sure to follow? Of course!</p>
<p>In any case, my top preferences? </p>

<p>But Kelly also managed to say that the media were sensational for keeping Facebook&#8211;the dominant social-networking site in the whole wide world&#8211;honest as it grows into a behemoth grasping a scary amount of personal information on its 200 million users in its claws.</p>

<p>Former Facebook COO Owen Van Natta has finally been officially named as CEO of MySpace, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/van-natta-in-at-myspace-appointment-to-be-announced-tomorrow/">BoomTown reported yesterday</a>, according to a press release from News Corp.</p>
<p>He will replace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe, who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/its-official-dewolfe-out-as-myspace-ceo-co-founder-tom-anderson-also-moving-aside/">stepped down from the job</a> earlier this week. DeWolfe will remain a strategic adviser at MySpace.</p>
<p>Van Natta, 39, will take over immediately and be based in Los Angeles, where MySpace has its HQ. But, with strong ties to Silicon Valley, he is likely to give the site more of a high-tech infusion.</p>
<p>Van Natta has most recently been running Project Playlist, a controversial music-sharing start-up based in Palo Alto, Calif. Previous to that, he worked at Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>He will be replaced there, in turn, by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/project-playlist-names-former-mtv-exec-sykes-as-ceo-replacing-van-natta/">well-known former MTV Networks exec and co-founder John Sykes</a>.</p>
<p>No other new top execs at the huge social-networking site have been named yet, as some had reported.</p>
<p>Instead, it will be up to Van Natta, who will work closely with and report to new News Corp. digital head Jon Miller, to energize the current staff and recruit new talent to MySpace.</p>
<p>The social-networking giant has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the juggernaut growth of Facebook.</p>
<p>Van Natta played a key role in Facebook&#8217;s formation, striking key investment and advertising deals with Microsoft (MSFT), for example. He left after it was clear he was not going to become CEO, a job held by founder Mark Zuckerberg.</p>

<p>Instead, it will be up to Van Natta, who will work closely with new News Corp. digital head Jon Miller, to energize the current staff and recruit new talent to MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the juggernaut growth of Facebook.</p>

<p>But before that, he was key to striking its lucrative search and advertising deal with Microsoft (MSFT) as well as negotiating the $240 million investment by the software giant that valued Facebook at an eye-popping $15 billion.</p>
<p>Van Natta has most recently been running Project Playlist, a controversial music-sharing site.</p>
<p>A purchase of the start-up is not part of this deal, sources said, as it had been in previous talks Van Natta has had with News Corp. about other digital jobs.</p>
<p>Previous to Facebook, Van Natta worked at Amazon (AMZN) in a number of capacities.</p>

<p>Finally, Owen Van Natta is about to win out over a founder.</p>

<p>DeWolfe will likely get a title as a special adviser to MySpace in a deal that is still coming together.</p>
<p>Settling all the specifics could take at least a day and there is always the possibility that this changing-of-the-guard deal could fall apart. But multiple sources close to the situation said it is more just a matter of ironing out the details.</p>
<p>Thus, the die seems cast for Van Natta to take over the thorny job of rehauling MySpace, which is owned by News Corp. (NWS).</p>
<p>(News Corp. also owns Dow Jones, which owns this Web site).</p>
<p>In a post this morning, MediaMemo was the first to name Van Natta as the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/chris-dewolfe-likely-to-step-down-as-ceo-news-corp-talking-to-facebook-veteran-owen-van-natta/">only candidate in the running</a> to take over as leader of MySpace.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s familiar territory for him.</p>
<p>Van Natta never got the big job at Facebook, which is under the firm control of founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>But Van Natta&#8211;who got to Facebook in its early days after stints at various companies, including Amazon (AMZN)&#8211;was a key early player in making the social-networking site into the juggernaut it is today.</p>
<p>He played a large role in its advertising and investment deals with Microsoft (MSFT), for example, as well as in hiring many of its current execs.</p>
<p>But, like many at Facebook, Van Natta left <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook">Facebook in early 2008 under tense circumstances</a>, although he now is on good terms with Zuckerberg and others at Facebook.</p>
<p>Maybe not any longer.</p>
<p>In a delicious digital irony, he will be taking on Facebook head on, as MySpace&#8211;once the momentum player in the space&#8211;tries to regain its step against Facebook.</p>
<p>Van Natta is currently CEO of music start-up Project Playlist and it is not yet clear what will happen there. When he was previously talking to MySpace about running its music site, there was speculation that it might buy the start-up.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s developments have happened quickly and without a lot of advance planning.</p>

<p>The talks to complete this deal are being led by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head">new digital boss Jon Miller</a> (pictured here), who came to News Corp. last month.</p>
<p>News Corp. officials declined to comment on the developing situation.</p>
<p>But sources said that Miller hadn&#8217;t been planning on getting rid of DeWolfe in the near future, and until yesterday, he was still evaluating his options. </p>
<p>News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch had once treated DeWolfe as a favorite and gave him significant autonomy at MySpace.</p>
<p>But Murdoch, who brought Miller on, has been leaning toward a change in leadership as MySpace&#8217;s traffic has stagnated and its buzz and momentum have moved to Facebook.</p>
<p>Under DeWolfe, many have felt it has dropped the ball on innovation and in making key improvements to its technology and features.</p>
<p>Worst of all, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090217/myspaces-google-gravy-train-set-to-stop-next-year">MySpace&#8217;s lucrative $900 million search advertising deal with Google</a> (GOOG) is also coming to an end, a deal that essentially paid for the News Corp. acquisition.</p>
<p>Recently, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090303/kapur-stepping-down-as-myspace-coo">several key execs have left too</a>, including COO Amit Kapur.</p>
<p>In general, the social-networking giant has had an air of decline about it, despite its still-enormous size.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Murdoch had left the decision about the site&#8217;s leadership to Miller, his new hire, sources said. </p>
<p>Miller had been talking to many and was indeed leaning toward putting a new CEO in place, but not in this fashion. He had hoped to work out the transition with DeWolfe, said several sources.</p>
<p>Miller himself had been badly treated, when Time Warner (TWX) dumped him as CEO of AOL several years ago. Ironically, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090312/jeff-bewkes-lays-off-aol-ceo-and-president-in-a-new-york-minute/">media giant just ousted the execs</a> who ousted Miller.</p>
<p>But Miller&#8217;s options narrowed last night, once TechCrunch ran a <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/21/news-corp-exploring-myspace-ceo-options/">story</a> claiming that News Corp. had hired a headhunting firm to &#8220;scour for possible replacements&#8221; for DeWolfe.</p>
<p>News Corp. hadn&#8217;t actually hired a headhunter at all, but the story spooked DeWolfe into calling Miller to ask what his plans were. That conversation led to today&#8217;s negotiations.</p>
<p>Van Natta is well known at News Corp. and was, at one point, the leading candidate to head up MySpace Music, which launched last fall, and the two sides held extensive conversations.</p>
<p>But Van Natta did not like the job&#8217;s org chart: Rather than a standalone company, MySpace Music is simply a unit of MySpace, reporting to DeWolfe.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081105/myspace-music-ceo-debuting-tomorrow/">MTV executive Courtney Holt</a> eventually took the job.</p>
<p>Van Natta is intertwined with MySpace in other ways. </p>
<p>Project Playlist, the free music-streaming site he took over last fall, has seen traffic plummet after <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081223/facebook-bails-on-project-playlist-too/">MySpace, along with Facebook, cut off the sites&#8217; access to their users</a>, a move prompted by lawsuits from several major music companies.</p>
<p>Van Natta has made some headway at extracting the company from its legal mess, which predated his hiring, and he has hammered out a settlement with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090325/a-win-for-project-playlist-emi-drops-suit-signs-on/">EMI Music Group</a>.</p>
<p>But Playlist is still being sued by other music labels.</p>
<p>And, even music sites that aren&#8217;t in legal trouble are struggling to keep their heads above water.</p>
<p>Thus, plenty of Silicon Valley watchers&#8211;including BoomTown, who calls Van Natta periodically to ask why he seemed to enjoyed the pain of running an online music business&#8211;have wondered why Van Natta landed at Playlist in the first place, and have speculated that he has been looking for a way out.</p>
<p>He has been on the short list for many big Web jobs at places like Microsoft and other Silicon Valley start-ups, but has not bitten until now.</p>

<p>While Silicon Valley has been less impacted than, say, New York, things have certainly been tightening up here, with layoffs at big companies and small ones and less frenetic activity than one had come to expect from Web 2.0.</p>
<p>But last week, the pulse seemed to quicken a little with the various rumors that have swirled around Twitter, the variety of controversies around Facebook and the nascent chit-chatting now taking place between Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Thus, with a third eye to the future, here&#8217;s my take on what could happen. <em>Big caveat</em>, though: Much of what follows is all my speculation and analysis and not based on any psychic feelings.</p>
<p><strong>TWITTER TWADDLE</strong></p>
<p>Last week, I did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090409/who-will-be-twitters-bestest-search-friend-google-and-microsoft-engage-in-yet-another-pick-me-face-off">rather long reported post on what was going on</a> after rumors broke out that Twitter was in &#8220;late-stage&#8221; acquisition negotiations with Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>While an imminent deal was not pending two weeks ago, I wrote that Twitter was indeed the apple of Google&#8217;s eye at the moment&#8211;specifically and now more so than ever, many sources tell me, of its Search Product VP Marissa Mayer&#8211;for some kind of search deal that could eventually lead to an acquisition. </p>
<p>But I also noted that Microsoft was also in the picture, vying for Twitter&#8217;s affections, and I doubted that Microsoft and Google would be the only ones interested in the hot-as-July-in-Alabama microblogging start-up.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the plus for Twitter: It&#8217;s on a hype rocket ship, its growth is also accelerating and it does not need money, since it just got a big slug of venture funding.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s also a minus and why I also predict that there are only two outcomes: a sale very soon or a major investment by one of its suitors.</p>

<p>While I would love for its founders, including Biz Stone and CEO Evan Williams, to stick to their claims of remaining a “strong, profitable, independent company,” a cash offer of over $500 million or a cash-and-stock offer of slightly more will probably be enough to take them off the table, mostly because the getting might never get this good again.</p>
<p>That offer is most likely to come from Google, if I had to make a bet, which is well known for moving quickly when it sees a tasty treat it desires.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a shame, since once the start-up actually does enter these kinds of &#8220;late-stage&#8221; talks <em>for real</em>, some deserved shine will come right off Twitter&#8217;s cute little MINI convertible of a company.</p>
<p>Instead, Twitter might want to take a page from Facebook and let itself grow its own as it explores revenue options, while perhaps taking a large investment and striking a significant commercial deal with a strategic partner like Google or Microsoft.</p>
<p>Then, with a modicum of independence and the possibility of acquisition if it turned out it needed help, Twitter could forge its own destiny.</p>
<p>And wouldn&#8217;t that be nice if Google or Microsoft didn&#8217;t just gobble up every innovative thing they cannot seem to think of on their own?</p>
<p><strong>FACEBOOK FOLLIES</strong></p>
<p>I will be reporting more very soon on what&#8217;s been going on as the powerful social-networking site deals with its fast-growing pains&#8211;up to 200 million users now, which is about as impressive at it gets in the Internet space.</p>
<p>Not so impressive is the variety of high-profile management mishaps that have plagued the company of late&#8211;from its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/mark-zuckerberg-talks-about-facebook-terms-of-service-snafu">Terms of Service debacle</a> to its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090324/facebook-responds-to-redesign-feedback-sort-of">redesign rough road</a> to the way Facebook <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially">recently parted with CFO GIdeon Yu</a>.</p>
<p>To say Facebook treated Yu&#8211;a well-regarded figure in the tech sector, who had also raised an awful lot of funding for the start-up&#8211;with very little of the kind of grace he deserved and that it should have displayed is an understatement.</p>
<p>In the creation of a significant start-up, tensions inevitably flare and there is typically a lot of management turnover, which is natural, for a variety of reasons on all sides.</p>
<p>Why Facebook had to insecurely tout its stable financial state while backhandedly slapping Yu by saying it was in a search for a CFO with &#8220;public company experience&#8221;&#8211;Yu had enough public company experience to make that deeply insulting&#8211;was unclear, when it simply could have said he was moving on in the way most such partings are done.</p>
<p>The conflict between its public statement and an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090402/the-entire-facebook-goodbye-gideon-we-are-the-money-champions-memo/">internal memo I obtained</a> on Yu&#8217;s departure underscored the problem.</p>
<p>Insecure and way too focused on optics is probably an issue Facebook will have to deal with as it moves toward what the company hopes will be in IPO in 2010 or 2011. Rather than all the noise, its only goal should be shaping up its revenue and profit performance and, hopefully, building a cohesive management.</p>
<p>But does that mean current CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg will have to eventually step aside before a public offering and make way for a more experienced CEO type, as Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page did for Eric Schmidt, as some have suggested?</p>

<p>I predict not. Because, for all his careening from crisis to crisis of late, I have no question that Zuckerberg&#8211;who has fended off big-money acquisition attempts by big players with a cool-cucumberness that Twitter&#8217;s execs should study carefully&#8211;has every intention of riding Facebook to the very top&#8211;or even bottom.</p>
<p>Clearly modeling himself as a modern-day Steve Jobs (who was fired before triumphantly returning) or Bill Gates (a better comparison), Zuckerberg is a visionary techie who wants to style himself as a crack businessman too.</p>
<p>And with a lot of control over the fate of Facebook, he&#8217;s going to see his vision of Facebook and himself out.</p>
<p><strong>THE ODD COUPLE</strong></p>
<p>Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Oops, I mean can two once-bickering-over-a-hostile-takeover companies start talking without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Last week, the news, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090410/yahoos-bartz-and-microsofts-ballmer-finally-talking-about-search-and-advertising-partnership/">first reported here</a> Friday, that Yahoo was involved in preliminary talks with Microsoft about an extensive commercial advertising and search partnership&#8211;should have come as no surprise.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg" alt="oddcoup2" title="oddcoup2" width="239" height="196" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12183" /></a></p>
<p>After all, Yahoo and Microsoft are laggards in the lucrative search space, especially compared to the dominant Google, and they must somehow find a way to get along to get some traction in the marketplace.</p>
<p>But will they or will it be all Felix Unger and Oscar Madison battling until the end of time? While I loved that television show, and movie too, the Yahoo-Microsoft version is not riveting anymore to some.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am so bored with their not-coming-to-a-deal,&#8221; said one prominent exec, who was involved in the first go-round between the companies. &#8220;They need to make a deal, and if they don&#8217;t make a deal now, I will be both bored and in shock.&#8221;</p>
<p>That made me laugh out loud when I heard it. But it&#8217;s not funny, I know, because this is <em>serious stuff</em>! </p>
<p>Okay, then, seriously, this pair needs to come to some sort of partnership agreement like Miss Cleo needs a new reputation. </p>
<p>And, because I am a hopeful psychic, I predict they finally will, dropping all the emotion and history and realizing that they are wasting time and opportunity.</p>
<p>After all, while the future isn&#8217;t written, it can&#8211;a lot of the time&#8211;be both inevitable and utterly obvious.</p>
