<p>BoomTown was intrigued when Mind-Your-Own Biz Stone, one of the co-founders of Twitter, penned a blog post yesterday about the microblogging service changing its prompting question.</p>
<p>Now, above the little Twitter box, it reads, &#8220;What&#8217;s Happening?&#8221; and not the original tweet query, &#8220;What are you doing?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The fundamentally open model of Twitter created a new kind of information network and it has long outgrown the concept of personal status updates,&#8221; wrote Stone. &#8220;Twitter helps you share and discover what’s happening now among all the things, people, and events you care about. &#8216;What are you doing?&#8217; isn’t the right question anymore&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>While the blogosphere covered this development as if it were a moment of monumental meaning, most were ignorant that the true beacon of innovative What&#8217;s-Happeningness does not reside in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Instead, it would be embodied completely by the 1970s television show, &#8220;What&#8217;s Happening!&#8221;</p>
<p>The sitcom was about three African-American teens living in the Watts section of Los Angeles&#8211;Raj, Rerun and Dwayne.</p>

<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is making the most substantive changes in her exec ranks since she did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">massive restructuring of its staff</a> in late February, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>&#8220;She is continuing to clean the place up,&#8221; said one top exec about the moves, which are likely to be announced internally tomorrow.</p>
<p>Among the shifts in management will be filling the slot left by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company">departure of North American Audience head Jeff Dossett</a> in May.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Sources say Yahoo&#8217;s head of mobile, David Ko, will get the job of top Audience exec, although it is not clear if he will have the same portfolio has former media heads at Yahoo. </p>
<p>Since Dossett left, his job has been split between Jimmy Pitaro, who runs Vertical Audience Experiences, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications. They both currently report to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>The job of Audience head is a key role, given that Yahoo&#8217;s powerful media properties are among its most valuable assets. In recent months, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/product-management-engineering-and-ui-design-for-yahoo-news-moving-to-taiwan">Yahoo has made some major changes</a> in the way it creates its juggernaut News property.</p>
<p>Also to be filled is the job being done by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090920/yahoo-corporate-partnership-svp-schinella-departing">Corporate Partnership SVP Jim Schinella</a>, who, as BoomTown previously reported, is set to leave at the end of the year.</p>
<p>I could not determine who will take Schinella&#8217;s job, inside or out.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Yahoo has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/yahoo-poised-to-name-new-international-head-after-five-month-look-see-at-the-crowned-web-heads-of-europe">yet to name an international head</a>.</p>
<p>Sources said the company had filled the position, using a headhunter, but the London-based media exec candidate backed out at the last minute. That  meant Yahoo had to restart its search.</p>
<p>There might also be other top exec changes, all part of Bartz&#8217;s consolidation of power at Yahoo. She has named a spate of new top execs from outside, but has also kept some from the regime of former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>These staffing moves have come even as a stream of execs continued to depart the Silicon Valley Internet giant, including, most recently, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/11/16/right-media-founder-to-leave-yahoo/">Mike Walrath</a>, who was SVP of advertising strategy. Walrath had led Right Media, the online ad exchange Yahoo bought for $680 million in 2007.</p>
<p>Walrath was widely expected to leave Yahoo in July, at the completion of  his earnout from the acquisition, sources said, so the move was more sudden than expected internally. </p>
<p>Sources noted that Bartz moved Walrath&#8217;s departure forward in order to announce a new strategy for Right Media focused on premium publishers and to dump those ad networks and publishers of lesser ilk.</p>
<p>Whether this will stop the competitive onslaught in the ad exchange space is an open question given that Google has entered the fray significantly and that Facebook is widely expected to bolster its efforts.</p>
<p>Lastly, several sources said that there are also likely to be more changes on Yahoo&#8217;s board, which has seen the departure of two members recently.</p>
<p>In September, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090925/yahoo-loses-board-member-wilderotter-to-resign">Maggie Wilderotter</a> said she would leave the board by year&#8217;s end. And former Yahoo nemesis and investor <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091023/goodbye-to-all-that-icahn-leaves-yahoo-board">Carl Icahn</a> left the board in late October.</p>
<p>Whether Yahoo will replace them or keep its current size of 10 directors is not clear.</p>
<p>Also possible, several sources said, would be Bartz taking the chairman title, which is currently held by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090114/yahoos-decker-resigned-with-class-now-chairman-bostock-should-exit-stage-right-too/">Roy Bostock</a>. Bostock, along with Yang, played a key role in its botched takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Bartz finally successfully struck a sweeping search and advertising partnership with the software giant this summer, which is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/exclusive-yahoo-and-microsoft-poised-to-finally-sign-definitive-search-and-ad-agreement/">moving closer to being launched</a>.</p>

<p>ABC certainly is taking its sweet time in releasing the first episode of &#8220;V,&#8221; a sci-fi television series that debuted earlier this week on the Web in any substantial way.</p>
<p>The network is showing about nine minutes of the redo of the 1980s miniseries about a lizardy alien invasion disguised as a peace mission by outerspace hotties online on its site. </p>
<p>But pretty much the only way you could watch &#8220;V&#8221; in its entirety this week, if you missed its broadcast Tuesday, is by <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TNS012/ref=dv_twitter_freeV">buying it on Amazon</a>.</p>
<p>It initially streamed there free, to build momentum, as well as on Apple (AAPL) iTunes, but now the only place you can get it&#8211;if you fork over $2&#8211;is Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>That all changes tomorrow, when the show&#8211;whose debut racked up surprisingly high numbers at 13.9 million viewers&#8211;shows up for free on <a href="http://abc.go.com/shows/v">ABC&#8217;s site</a> and on the Disney (DIS) network&#8217;s joint venture video partner, Hulu.</p>

<p>Last Friday, National Public Radio CEO Vivian Schiller and Digital Media SVP and GM Kinsey WiIson came to San Francisco for a <a href="http://www.npr.org/about/press/2009/100709.DigitalThinkIn.html">&#8220;Digital Think In&#8221;</a> to pick the brains of some Silicon Valley types about where the public radio icon should go, digitally speaking.</p>
<p>While NPR actually has been pretty fast-forward with podcasts and a robust Web site, it still has to think about what social networking means to it and whether a day is coming when broadcasting online will be bigger than offline.</p>
<p>Also, what&#8217;s <em>up</em> with Twitter?</p>
<p>These and other questions were discussed at frog design Friday with a passel of Web types like investor Roger McNamee of Elevation Partners, Toni Schneider of Automattic, craigslist founder Craig Newmark and LinkedIn founder and Chairman Reid Hoffman.</p>
<p>Also, ubiquitous blogger Robert Scoble, who wants NPR to open itself up like a can of beans.</p>
<p>The Think In participants were charged with making suggestions related to five main topics: Social media and connection to the audience, NPR&#8217;s national network of more than 800 stations, the potential of its open API, expansion of platforms and how to  diversify its revenue model. </p>
<p>BoomTown always likes crowdsourcing innovation, even among the digital elite.</p>
<p>While at the event in the morning, I talked to Schiller, who came to NPR last year after a stint as general manager of the New York Times online unit, and also to Wilson, who previously worked as executive editor for USA Today and ran its digital efforts before that.</p>

<p>Former Bebo CEO Joanna Shields and Shine Group Chairman and CEO Elisabeth Murdoch have formed a content start-up to produce across media platforms, both online and offline, with a focus on social engagement, according to sources.</p>
<p>The new venture, which does not have a name, is being financially backed both by Shine and by Shields, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090526/people-networks-president-joanna-shields-leaving-aol/">left AOL this summer</a> after running its community and communications division.</p>
<p>Shields <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080313/bebo-by-the-not-so-big-numbers/">engineered the sale of social networking site Bebo</a> to the Time Warner (TWX) online unit for $850 million in early 2008.</p>
<p>Sources said this new company, based in London, will invest, develop and partner to create a variety of content offerings that also incorporate interactive and social networking elements. It will also help the vast array of Shine content in interactive efforts.</p>
<p>Shields will be CEO of the start-up, which will operate under <a href="http://www.shine.tv">Shine</a>, an independent and private television production company with programming in 24 countries.</p>
<p>In the U.S., for example, its Reveille unit is responsible for such shows as &#8220;Ugly Betty&#8221; and &#8220;The Biggest Loser.&#8221; (Both of which are BoomTown faves.)</p>
<p>Shine&#8217;s fast growth has been spearheaded by Murdoch, who is the daughter of News Corp. (NWS) head Rupert Murdoch. </p>
<p>But Elisabeth Murdoch has struck out on her own in forming Shine, which already has shown a strong interactive bent for a television company.</p>
<p>The combination of television and Web content is an arena that many are once again jumping into, aiming at creating branded interactive content, fueled by advertising.</p>
<p>Former NBC Universal exec Ben Silverman&#8211;who sold Reveille to Murdoch, in fact&#8211;has recently left his programming job at the television network to start a similar kind of company with longtime entertainment and Internet kingpin Barry Diller of IAC/InteractiveCorp (IACI).</p>
<p>And former ABC programming and Yahoo exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090205/is-wonderwall-gonna-be-the-one-that-saves-msn">Lloyd Braun also runs a television and Internet production company</a> with longtime Hollywood player Gail Berman, including recently creating the Wonderwall celebrity news site for Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>In addition, Yahoo (YHOO) and a spate of small content start-ups, as well as big media companies, are all trying to figure out how to create and monetize content online in a multimedia effort that bridges all kinds of distribution vehicles and more deeply involves viewers.</p>
<p>Bebo was actually trying to do that too. Under Shields, it had been a pioneer in creating a variety of innovative online original content, including &#8220;KateModern&#8221; and &#8220;Sofia&#8217;s Diary.&#8221;</p>
<p>But new management at AOL, now headed by former Google (GOOG) exec Tim Armstrong, has sidelined Bebo to its new ventures division and is likely to try to sell it. Company execs at both Time Warner and AOL now say the purchase was a costly mistake.</p>
<p>That might be true, but it was clearly a financial coup for Shields&#8211;who has worked at both Google and RealNetworks (RNWK)&#8211;and Bebo investors. </p>
<p>And, given the track record of both Shields and Murdoch, it will be interesting to see what they come up with.</p>

<p><em>Every week, BoomTown is calling all those who make cool graphs, charts and stats done prettily about tech to send them to me pronto.</p>
<p>I am&#8211;truth be told&#8211;a secret stats fanatic. A bargraphaholic. Yes, even a closet pie-charter.</em></p>
<p>The last set of data I posted was a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090821/fancy-charts-of-the-week-it-might-be-bingtastic-but-users-heart-google-like-gum-loves-a-sneaker/">comparison of the share and consumer loyalty of the three big search engines</a>&#8211;Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO) and, of course, Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>This week, in its annual survey of consumer technology attitudes and adoption, titled &#8220;The State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; Forrester Research found that&#8230;<em>wait for it, wait for it</em>&#8230;the kids love the Internet!</p>
<p>As you can see in the chart labeled 4-1 below (click on the image to make it larger), new media beat traditional media for consumers younger than 40 years old, in terms of hours spent. </p>
<p>Still, the under-40 group also use traditional media, through both online and television channels, as you can see in the chart labeled 4-2, although TV is the most likely way everyone accesses most big-media offerings.</p>
<p>Well, except the Weather Channel, which leads in &#8220;cross-channel media use,&#8221; which means it is doing swimmingly in diversifying its distribution.</p>
<p>Lastly, in the 4-3 chart, as with the first chart, while Web sites like News Corp. (NWS) social networking site MySpace and its rival Facebook show up on the 10 most regularly consumed channels for the youngs, the olds are still mostly chomping on networks, newspapers and cable.</p>
<p>In other words, traditional media&#8217;s demographic is the group more likely to die first! But at least they&#8217;re loyal!</p>

<p>After all, the Time Warner (TWX) unit has a long history of whacking employees. So, it is easier to assume things will not be different under the regime of the latest CEO Tim Armstrong.</p>
<p>Except it&#8217;s not actually true that such massive cuts are in the offing, since&#8211;as many sources I spoke to said&#8211;Armstrong is only in the early part of figuring out what to do about the cost structure of AOL, after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090719/aol-chairman-and-ceo-tim-armstrong-talks-the-100-day-check-in">laying out a company strategy and rejiggering management</a> recently.</p>
<p>While the end result of the cost-to-benefit analysis might, in all likelihood, mean layoffs of a chunk of its 7,000 employees&#8211;a larger number for its smaller operations.</p>
<p>And, after all, staff costs are one of the biggest line items in AOL&#8217;s budget&#8211;sources at the company said Armstrong will not rely on simply cutting jobs to craft a more attractive budget for its upcoming spinoff.</p>
<p>Still, there is obviously a lot of pressure on Armstrong to get the financials&#8211;which are still largely dependent on AOL&#8217;s declining, but money-generating, access business&#8211;looking pretty.</p>
<p>That access business did almost $2 billion in revenue last year&#8211;about half its sales&#8211;and it represented almost all its profits.</p>
<p>In contrast, AOL&#8217;s advertising business lagged, dropping hugely over the last several quarters.</p>
<p>Still, Armstrong has laid out a strategy that has included, in part:</p>
<p>Being a new kind of content giant, via a series of branded niche media sites, with about 500 full-time writers and editors and 1,500 freelancers; selling premium display advertising on these sites and strengthening its third-party self-service ad network business; finding a way to use its communications properties to redistribute traffic to other properties in a kind of virtuous circle. </p>
<p>There are also local, analytical and venture elements. But&#8211;for all intents and purposes&#8211;Armstrong&#8217;s plan is a content-and-advertising model, supported for now by the dwindling piles of cash from the access business.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why, of course, costs are the next item on Armstrong&#8217;s to-do list. </p>
<p> &#8220;The cost structure is the last part of what was going to be dealt with, as Tim has told everyone,&#8221; said one person close to the situation about the former Google (GOOG) exec. &#8220;But, if it is slash-and-burn only, that would be pretty short-sighted.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps, except that it is that exact tactic that has been business-as-usual at AOL for far too long.</p>

<p>Last night, BoomTown moderated a really interesting panel for an organization called Girls in Tech, titled &#8220;Journalism 2.0 RoundTable.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://girlsintech.net/">Girls in Tech</a> describes itself as a &#8220;social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent &#038; influential women.&#8221;</p>
<p>With those lofty requirements&#8211;combined with the fact that I was a girl when we had yet to land on the moon&#8211;I have no idea what I was doing there.</p>
<p>In any case, it was held in the San Francisco offices of MySpace and covered such topics such as: How blogging and citizen journalism have changed the landscape, what works in the highly connected digital media space, and, of course, the ups and down of being a woman in the male-choked tech industry in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>The panelists included former San Francisco Chronicle tech editor Deborah Gage, ZDNet&#8217;s Jennifer Leggio, Ubergizmo Editor Eliane Fiolet, VentureBeat&#8217;s Camille Ricketts and TechieDiva&#8217;s Gina Hughes.</p>
<p>It was a lively discussion, with highlights such as Fiolet telling a hilarious story about an encounter of the irksome kind at a gaming conference and jokingly recommending violence as a solution, and Hughes talking about the sometimes trollish commenters of Yahoo (YHOO) when she blogged there.</p>
<p>Overall takeaway: Be loud, be proud and ignore all the noise. That, or make some more&#8211;and, preferably, via Twitter.</p>
<p>I also did a short interview at the event with social media blogger and PR guy Brian Solis about his latest book, &#8220;Putting the Public Back in Public Relations.&#8221;</p>

<p>When Time Warner <a href="http://www.timewarner.com/corp/newsroom/pr/0,20812,1904197,00.html">reports its second-quarter earnings tomorrow morning</a>, before the markets open, most Wall Street analysts are not expecting much from the media giant, as it continues to slog toward a rejiggering of itself.</p>
<p>Time Warner (TWX)&#8211;which owns assets like the Warner Bros. movie studio, the AOL online unit, the HBO and Turner cable television networks and Time Inc. magazines&#8211;is expected to earn 37 cents per share, compared to 72 cents a year ago, according to a poll of analysts from Thomson Reuters (TRIN).</p>
<p>Revenue is expected to be $6.97 billion, down from $11.56 billion in the same quarter last year. This drop is mostly due to the March spinoff of its cable unit, Time Warner Cable.</p>
<p>With movies like &#8220;The Hangover&#8221; and the sixth in the series, &#8220;Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,&#8221; doing well, there is some strength at Time Warner.</p>
<p>But the advertising market has been weak all over, which hits the company hard.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why both AOL and the magazines are expected to keep up their drag on Time Warner&#8217;s financial prospects&#8211;at least until the November spinoff of the online unit.</p>
<p>Until then, most expect another miserable quarter from AOL advertising revenue. Sources noted that any turnaround won&#8217;t show till end of year at the earliest, due to the weak economy and a retooling of the company and its sales force.</p>
<p>That restructuring is not over, most agree, with expectations of more layoffs of some of its 7,000 employees coming. With the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090719/aol-chairman-and-ceo-tim-armstrong-talks-the-100-day-check-in/">100-day overview by new CEO Tim Armstrong now over</a>, sources said, the staff size is likely to be adjusted accordingly.</p>
<p>Most also expect to see continued weakness at the long-suffering Time Inc. magazine division.</p>
<p>People outside the company think that Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes will want to sell or spin off Time Inc. once AOL is done.</p>
<p>And people inside the company talk about the fact that Time has some 125 titles, although most of the revenue and profit only come from a few titles, such as People, Sports Illustrated and Time.</p>
<p>According to sources at the magazine division, talk of a new round of layoffs has also been also circulating there of late.</p>

<p>After much fake agonizing over the fate of &#8220;Sarah Connor,&#8221; Fox programmers finally stuck a fork in the series after two seasons. Loosely based on the movie franchise, the show garnered a passionate fan base online and off, but not enough to merit being renewed.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s ironic since the latest film in the cyborg-versus-man epic, &#8220;Terminator Salvation,&#8221; will open this Thursday.</p>
<p>It is the next blockbuster in a tech-heavy summer movie season, following the boffo reception that the new &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; has gotten (next up: &#8220;Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen&#8221;).</p>
<p>But the arrival of &#8220;Terminator Salvation,&#8221; with its noisy, Armageddon-is-nigh theme, could not save the more thoughtfully dark &#8220;Sarah Connor.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thank goodness, then, for YouTube and a very pissed-off and half-naked young actor named Thomas Dekker, who plays a teenage savior of humanity, John Connor, in the TV series.</p>
<p>In this perfect online video clip he did himself, the real-life (and very wild-eyed) Dekker calls Fox&#8217;s viewer comment line to express his support for the show in no uncertain terms:</p>

<p>Khemlani&#8217;s departure was announced to his staff at Yahoo (YHOO) today and confirmed by the press release from Hearst below.</p>
<p>While Khemlani was in line to head one of the three main prongs of the new content organization, running a possible network programming arm, sources inside and outside Yahoo said he instead has opted to take a job as VP and Special Assistant to the CEO for Digital Media at Hearst.</p>
<p>Khemlani is not leaving due to the upcoming changes at Yahoo, said sources, but because he got a &#8220;compelling&#8221; offer to work for a more traditional media company in a range of businesses, from newspapers and magazines to broadcast, helping turbocharge their digital efforts.</p>
<p>Khemlani, who came to Yahoo from a long stint as a producer at the television news show &#8220;60 Minutes,&#8221; will be reporting to the privately-held media company&#8217;s vice chairman and CEO, Frank Bennack.</p>
<p>Khemlani, several sources said, told his bosses at Yahoo&#8211;U.S. Audience head Jeff Dossett and U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider&#8211;on Friday of his plans right when the pair were in the midst of planning a major shift in how media are managed and created at Yahoo.</p>

<p>At Hearst, he will be a resource for its many divisions, which all have their own digital operations, and he will be based in New York. (Khemlani currently has been working out of Yahoo&#8217;s media offices in Santa Monica, Calif.)</p>
<p>In a press release from Hearst, Bennack said: “Hearst’s major operating groups have all made substantial progress towards our corporate objective of fully participating in the digital transformation. The creation of this new position is designed to accelerate the progress through greater cooperation and synergy across divisional lines. Neeraj is uniquely equipped to help me and my colleagues realize that goal.”</p>
<p>Ironically, Hearst has a strong relationship with Yahoo, as a content partner.</p>
<p>UPDATE: In a Hearst press release Khemlani said: “I am delighted to join Hearst Corporation. We are witnessing the reemergence of content and media driving value in the new world and Hearst is uniquely positioned to realize that value across multiple digital platforms and distribution points. Remember, we&#8217;re only in the second inning of the Internet. Hearst, with all its assets and investments, expects to take a commanding lead by the seventh‐inning stretch.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090222/yahoo-media-unit-to-get-a-reorg-too/">BoomTown reported yesterday</a>, the management of the media unit is about to be rejiggered dramatically.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s part of big changes coming for Yahoo, including an even more massive management reorganization that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz could announce this week, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">this column reported on Friday</a>.</p>
<p>Under a plan being considered, the media unit will be split into three parts: vertical programming, network programming and search monetization. </p>
<p>This comes after some other recent changes in the way media product development is done&#8211;moving to a centralized global structure, rather than residing in individual media units&#8211;which was also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">reported here last week</a>.</p>
<p>Now, if they go through with current plans to reorganize the media unit, Schneider and Dossett must find another head of network programming. </p>
<p>Several inside sources said that vertical programming will probably roll up under current Sports GM Jimmy Pitaro. And Tim Mayer&#8211;who is now VP of search monetization and distribution&#8211;would probably remain in his job, with perhaps even more monetization duties added.</p>

<p>NEW YORK, February 23, 2008&#8211;Hearst Corporation announced today that Neeraj Khemlani, 38, has been named to the new position of vice president and special assistant to the CEO for digital media, Hearst Corporation. The announcement was made by Frank A. Bennack, Jr., vice chairman and chief executive officer of Hearst Corporation, and is effective March 23. Khemlani, who will report directly to Bennack, will be responsible for promoting and coordinating digital content transformation across the Company.</p>

<p>Khemlani was formerly vice president and general manager of Yahoo! News &#038; Information as well as Yahoo! Originals. In this position, he managed the business and products of Yahoo! News, Tech, Weather and Education, and the editorial programming for Yahoo! Finance, as executive editor. He also directed original content programming, including product design, content production and sponsorship, across all Yahoo! channels; and initiated and oversaw strategic business development content deals with major media companies.</p>
<p>From 1998 to 2006, Khemlani was a producer for CBS News’ 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II, and a creative consultant to Imagine Entertainment, ABC Entertainment, from 2000 to 2001, where he advised scriptwriters. His television experience also includes producer positions with Crile Communications and ABC News, where he produced segments for Nightline, Good Morning America, Peter Jennings Reporting and ABC News Specials.</p>

<p>According to several sources inside the company, U.S. Audience SVP Jeff Dossett (pictured here) has been working on the changes for a while, part of an overall change in how Yahoo (YHOO) makes and delivers content. The new organization could be announced this week too.</p>
<p>Under a plan being considered, the media unit will be split into three parts: Vertical programming, network programming and search monetization. </p>
<p>It is not clear under this new set-up if Yahoo will keep its more traditional structure of having powerful general managers, each in charge of its big properties.</p>
<p>But that seems likely to be scaled back, at the very least, since the shift in management comes after some major recent changes in the way content is made, as was also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">reported here last week</a>.</p>
<p>Already, the media group&#8217;s product development for all its major properties&#8211;such as News, Sports and Finance&#8211;is set to be moved to a central global product development organization at Yahoo&#8217;s HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>Until now, such development has been mostly done by individual media properties, many of which are located down south, in Santa Monica. </p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing the product development of a Yahoo media offering drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth across the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from the programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>Dossett will remain overall head of media efforts, but there is a lot of speculation inside the group about who will head the three new parts of media unit. But that is still being worked out by Dossett and his boss, U.S. head Hilary Schneider, and is still not decided.</p>
<p>But several inside sources said that vertical programming is probably a lock to roll up under current Sports GM Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>Former &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; producer and News GM Neeraj Khemlani seems be the most likely candidate to head network programming, but that is not yet complete.</p>
<p>And Tim Mayer&#8211;who is now VP of search monetization and distribution&#8211;would probably remain in his job, with perhaps even more monetization duties added.</p>

<p>Essentially, Nelson now reports to Satya Nadella, SVP of the Search, Platform and Advertising Group (think engineering and search) and Erik Jorgensen, Corporate VP of MSN (think business and other stuff).</p>
<p>In addition and apropos of nothing, Yusuf Mehdi serves as SVP of the Online Audience Business and Brian McAndrews is SVP of the Advertiser &#038; Publisher Group. </p>
<p>Also, there is a Windows Live group that does mail, communications and groups too, and a lot of other digital bosses too numerous to mention.</p>
<p>You can see why I have been haranguing Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer for a little digital clarity, especially around its consumer digital businesses and brands. But Microsoft&#8211;like a lot of tech-born businesses&#8211;loves to overdesign!</p>
<p>Ballmer has been searching for an overall head of that business to sort it all out since Kevin Johnson left in July, whose massive duties were divvied up.</p>
<p>While he has looked at a lot of execs from inside and outside the company, I recently posted that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081120/boomtown-pick-for-microsoft-digital-head-qi-lu-yes-the-former-yahoo-search-guru/">Ballmer&#8217;s latest quarry is former Yahoo tech star Qi Lu</a>.</p>
<p>Only Ballmer knows for sure, many have told me, keeping his decision-making on the issue close to the vest. </p>
<p>But, as many insiders and outsiders familiar with the business have noted to me, whoever takes that role as its digital guru has some very hard decisions to make in all its arenas, from search to advertising to content. </p>
<p>There has been no share growth in search for Microsoft, for example, where archrival Google (GOOG) dominates, even as there have been billions of dollars of investment in data centers and engineers.</p>
<p>And it will fall to the person Ballmer ultimately selects as digital head to figure out what to do next. </p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s failed attempt to buy Yahoo (YHOO) was one way of dealing with the many issues Microsoft is facing, as well as its current interest in buying Yahoo&#8217;s search business. </p>
<p>In any case, here are some new changes at MSN, in Nelson&#8217;s words:</p>
<p><em>· Network Programming, led by Rob Bennett&#8211;This group will prioritize investments against Network priorities, shape audience strategy, set Network standards, and sponsor cross-network initiatives. </p>
<p>· Network Entry Points, led by Steve Cvengros&#8211;This group will focus on increasing exposure, distribution and discoverability of assets by optimizing and expanding entry points to the Network.</p>
<p>· Vertical Programming, led by Sandy Henson&#8211;This group will create content experiences to deeply engage the audience and grow Network value in vertical areas. All channels will move into this group.</p>
<p>· Monetization and Analytics, led by Dell Wilkinson&#8211;This group will focus on improving yield by making MSN easier for advertisers to buy and APS to sell through inventory insights and APS engagement.</p>
<p>· Chief of Staff, Eva Corets&#8211;This role is responsible for driving team processes and business rhythm, and assisting with prioritization of network projects and interaction with cross-division and cross-Microsoft teams.</em></p>

<p>BoomTown has finally gotten used to the silly gee-gaws television networks use on election night, like touchscreen maps and drawing all over the screen and jump-up numbers.</p>
<p>But one used by CNN last night&#8211;a hologram of various people beamed into the studio to look like they were with Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper&#8211;was downright freaky.</p>
<p>Using lots of high-definition cameras, fancy computers and, I guess, <em>magic</em>, CNN reporter Jessica Yellin (see video below) was the first one to get the &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; treatment, beaming in from Chicago to New York. </p>
<p>Later, hip-hop musician Will.i.am was beamed in and preferred a &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; analogy. But the encounter was still kind of awkward, although you honestly could not look away either, as you can see from the video below (also coming in from Chicago).</p>
