Stone (pictured here)–who has clearly become the chatty spokesmodel for the hot microblogging service at public events all over the place of late–is set to be a guest on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report.”

Stone, of course, just updated everyone about the show on Twitter and also on his blog site.

I have no doubt it will be snarktastic, especially given the bulls-eye piece Stephen Colbert’s comic twin, Jon Stewart of “The Daily Show,” did on Twitter recently, nailing the unholy media obsession with tweeting.

Until the show, which we will post later, here is a very funny video Colbert did for our 2007 D: All Things Digital conference about the Internet, when Viacom (VIA) head Philippe Dauman was interviewed onstage, so Biz can better prepare for his comic grilling, um, interview.

How glad BoomTown was to finally see Jerry Yang up close and personal, after our valiant but futile efforts to get near the Yahoo co-founder and CEO in 2007.

No, we’re not stalking him in a restraining-order kind of way, although I did stake a claim to a front-row seat in the intimate theater at the Las Vegas Hilton for his keynote this morning at the Consumer Electronics Show, where Yang couldn’t help but see me.

Like he cared!

Not at all, as he was riveted to delivering his shtick about Yahoo’s mobile efforts (it’s a 3.0 version, according to Yang, which is a good move since Web 2.0–in general and in particular–has not been so kind to the Internet giant), as well as giving the audience a glimpse of some interesting new concepts related to its popular email program.

The front rows were so packed with top Yahoo execs–including President Sue Decker, as well as David Filo, Jeff Weiner, Brad Garlinghouse, Ash Patel, Dave Karnstedt, Bradley Horowitz, Hilary Schneider and even Chairman and former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel–that you had to wonder who was running the show back in Sunnyvale, Calif.

(I mean, say, if Google had decided to launch a sneak attack today with their bicycle brigade, it could have taken over Yahoo without a shot fired!)

Yang maintained a low-key tone throughout the presentation, as is his way (I kept imagining the performance being done by Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, who would have sold it all hard until he popped a vein).

Nonetheless, Yang did get the message through that opening its platform up to third-party developers would be a big push in 2008 for Yahoo.

So, the widgets in the excellent mobile product, called Yahoo! Go 3.0, are laudable and much more innovative than anything out there, even though Yahoo has been too quiet about marketing its Yahoo! Go product until now.

But at CES, Yang brought Yahoo Connected Life Executive Vice President Marco Boerries (pictured here) out to show off the mobile apps, including one from MTV (Viacom head Philippe Dauman and MTV Networks head Judith McGrath were in the audience) that seemed fun.

More interesting was Yang’s presenting new concepts for its Yahoo Mail product, which will be more social, relevant and integrated. A lot of this functionality is already being used by the open-source email company Zimbra, which Yahoo recently acquired (and whose head Satish Dharmaraj I interviewed last week).

As I wrote in that piece, I love the innovations, including ranking of those you email with most frequently and instant mapping from email, as well as a plethora of great features for email.

So, one vexing part of Yang’s presentation was that this concept needs to become a reality tomorrow. He brought out Co-Founder and interim CTO Filo to basically promise “soon,” but I say: Make it snappy!

I know, we’re pushy when it comes to Yahoo, but it’s because we care!

Well, care is not the right word exactly, but we are certain that a powerful and pioneering company like Yahoo can out-innovate these Web 2.0 newbies who get ridiculous funding to make goofy widgets and have the nerve to call it a business.

Thus, we took the chance and his prone position after the speech surrounded by well-wishers to go up and say hello in person to Yang, whom BoomTown has known for longer than either of us would care to say.

And, miracle of miracles, Yang said it had been far too long since we had gotten together and agreed to meet in 2008, a meeting for which we have been asking and egregiously posting about forever, to no avail.

How much does BoomTown love CES? Not so much.

But if it gets me lunch with Yang, I love it. So, Jerry, it’s officially 2008 and I am waiting by the phone for your call.

Before I interviewed Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, the crowd at D5 got to see a very funny video Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert did as an intro for his boss, whom he dubbed the “Dough Man.”

The Dauman interview took place the morning of May 31, 2007 at D: All Things Digital, the annual tech and media conference that Walt Mossberg and I host. The next conference takes place in late May 2008.

I dare you not to laugh when Colbert puts a piece of cable into a piece of cake and starts sucking.

As you will see, it is quite the Bubblefest, with all sorts of geeky bonhomie and aspiring hopefulness of also landing a $15 billion valuation, as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg noted he was about to do onstage yesterday.

Other luminaries onstage yesterday included Google exec Marissa Mayer, Nokia’s Anssi Vanjoki, former AOL exec Ted Leonsis and super-VC Mike Moritz. Today’s slate: Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, eBay’s Meg Whitman, Philippe Dauman of Viacom and other various and sundry Web poo-bahs.

Of course, most of the action–as always–takes place in the halls of the Palace Hotel, where the schmooze factor is always ratcheted up to 11. There’s nothing a bunch of nerds likes to do more than debate each other over code and funding and which start-up is about to tank (not theirs!).

Also, I might add that these parody videos posted below–a mashup of the ribald animated series and the Apple ads and another with “Harry Potter”–are chock full of jacked material!

Oh yes, I just grabbed this fine picture of the “South Park” character right off the Web without a problem.

I await Viacom owner Sumner Redstone’s wrath and expect his legions of lawyers to come raining down on me asap.

Herein lies the problem and the impetus for a new–and I would say not insignificant–deal just signed by the creators of “South Park” with its principal distributor, Viacom’s Comedy Central, which a New York Times report outlined in today’s paper.

According to the story, “South Park” creators and executive producers Matt Stone and Trey Parker, sick of seeing their valuable content ripped off pretty much everywhere it can be digitally ripped off, have decided to get into the viral video game themselves, which should have occurred to them, oh, many, many moons ago.

“If I’m overseas and have to get an episode right away,” Stone said to the Times, “you literally have to go to an illegal download site.”

I cannot imagine what a “South Park” character would do with an obviously obvious statement like that, but it would surely involve a bodily function.

Under terms of the deal, in which it appears Comedy Central (a division of MTV, which is a division of Viacom, which is a division of owner Sumner Redstone’s increasingly pissed-off-about-YouTube brain) will be footing the bill, they will create a Web hub to get “South Park” material out there before all the piraters can (and will still continue to, by the way).

To combat that too, the new unit will try to create new material well beyond the show. New television concepts, perhaps even bigger than the massive “South Park” franchise, could even emerge.

As part of the arrangement, they’ll all apparently split any ad revenue from SouthParkStudios.com, which should tell you all you need to know about the mood of Hollywood right now.

Studios are justifiably scared of the digital onslaught and actually have started to imagine funding talented people to create material to compete and to share in the ventures’ success might be a good idea.

While that’s business-as-usual in tech funding, the idea is an anathema to the entertainment industry, which likes to keep its talent happily overpaid with pap (though giant) salaries, all while keeping the really good and lucrative stuff–the actual ownership of the creative product–to itself.

The artists are no better, accepting the pricey pay-off in exchange for their work. Or as Stone said in an interview with the Times: “People always ask us, ‘You own it, right? No? Why’d you sign that deal?’ And I have to say, ‘Because I was sleeping on my friend’s couch.’”

Thus, the Google twins are billionaires many times over and the “South Park” dudes are merely really rich.

That’s achingly typical, and Hollywood execs argue that it’s because they take all the risk by funding, distributing and marketing the various entertainment projects. But with the advent of digital distribution and creation, it obviously all needs a bit of retooling.

Not that Viacom has not tried everything, in a panic after the not-buying of MySpace, which has definitely been a flash point for the company. Another, of course, is the $1 billion lawsuit it is waging against Google over copyright infringement on YouTube.

But I like this kind of move a lot better, even if it is a big flop and even if it is only reserved for giant rainmakers like Stone and Parker. While Hollywood powers like Viacom surely won’t allow others in on the game quite yet, it is an encouraging and even bold direction to the usual picture of Redstone (pictured here) harrumphing about digital piracy of its material.

While I agree that that is a problem that tech companies like Google need to address and have been arrogant about not addressing quickly enough, new CEO Philippe Dauman (whom I interviewed at D5 in May) is obviously a good influence.

It’s a move that should be replicated to make Web content as important as it could be. Hollywood needs to make more smart moves like this or else they are cooked.

Or maybe they are already, in the words of Cartman:

I will admit it–I thought Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman would go over like a lead balloon with the D5 audience, given the media giant had just sued Google–the digital arena’s biggest power of late–for $1 billion for alleged copyright violations at its YouTube subsidiary.

While not everyone in the tech space is cheering for the search giant, no one likes the litigious tactics of the old-media entertainment industry either, which have in the past–witness the music industry versus Napster–centered on deploying legions of lawyers rather than finding ways to cope with digital realities.

But I thought Dauman, who was sandwiched between YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen and Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt, made cogent arguments for his side (he is, after all, a lawyer by training, too), making the case for the need to stand up to the stealing of content online. At the same time, he also seemed ready to deal with the changes wrought by new technologies on Viacom’s business.

By way of background, D: All Things Digital, the annual tech and media conference Walt Mossberg and I host, has been sold out with a long wait list every year we have put it on.

That has meant only a few hundred people can see the interviews we do live onstage with some of the tech and media industry’s most interesting and important players.

The lineups have included Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs, as well as Eric Schmidt of Google, IAC’s Barry Diller, Meg Whitman of eBay, Cisco’s John Chambers and many others.

That’s what Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman has asked for in the media giant’s legal war over copyright infringement with search behemoth Google.

So leave it to those clever minxes at Google to turn the whole thing into a new version of “Austin Powers,” casting Dauman as Dr. Evil and his son of the same name, except for a Jr., as Scott, the estranged progeny of Dr. Evil and Frau Farbissina.

Because according to a post yesterday in The Wall Street Journal’s Law Blog, while Philippe the Elder is trying to stop Google’s YouTube from ripping off “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” Philippe the Younger will be working there.

It’s not clear from the piece (by Martin Peers and Kevin Delaney) what exactly his job will be, but all the dripping irony is more than enough for us.

That Philippe Jr. would now be working for Google has proved a source of amusement for some in the entertainment industry. The elder Philippe (Yale, Columbia Law), though, is presumably proud of his boy. Philippe Jr. also graduated from Yale, but in May one-upped pops by snagging a Columbia MBA alongside his Columbia JD, says a person familiar with his situation, who notes he was inundated with job offers. Despite the public tiff between Viacom and Google, his dad was encouraging of the Google move, the person said. Philippe Jr. is reportedly slated to start work at Google after Labor Day.”

This time, the National Music Publishers Association is adding its name to an existing lawsuit over whether the video-sharing site–big surprise–violated copyright laws. The group owns copyrights to lyrics and melodies for songs, rather than the songs themselves, which are mostly owned by record labels.

And while the four big labels have struck their Faustian bargain with YouTube, betting perhaps that ad dollars are their future and convinced of the need for the marketing power on YouTube, the NMPA is not buying that story quite yet.

Naturally, Google, owner of YouTube, can’t believe anyone would refuse its kind offers of promotional help in exchange for putting up with some intellectual-property infringement.

You can just hear those techies from their nerd version of Willy Wonka’s factory in Mountain View, Calif.: Can you imagine, those ingrates–can’t they understand our big brains will get to their puny concerns when we are good and ready!

“Many song writers and music publishers view YouTube as a promising promotional platform for connecting with their fans,” Google said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal. “We are surprised and disappointed that the NMPA has elected to take this route.”

Well, the company should not be that surprised, given that YouTube has yet to roll out its video “fingerprinting” technology that could help identify suspect clips on the site.

Until then (a fall date has been mentioned), Google has been claiming it is not at fault, since it removes clips when content owners ask and it is following U.S. copyright law. Here is a great piece by the Journal’s Kevin Delaney today on efforts in this regard.

Still, many content owners are plenty unhappy with the cost and effort needed to police the giant service. The lawsuit the NMPA is joining includes other content owners. In addition, in another suit, Viacom has famously sued Google for $1 billion over similar allegations of copyright infringement.

To get you up to speed, below are the highlight videos (full interviews to be posted soon on this site) of interviews Walt and I did with three of the players in this debate at D5 in late May: YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen; Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman; and Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google.
