<p>Google has acquired AdMob for $750 million, a huge price for an innovative start-up that has pioneered online ads on mobile and now smart phones.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081114/kara-visits-admob-and-talks-about-how-iphone-turbocharged-the-mobile-advertising-business">visited AdMob last fall</a> and posted about how it was likely to eventually be acquired by&#8230;<em>Google</em> (GOOG)!</p>
<p>(Google has provided a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-primer-on-admob-acquisition-we-cant-believe-we-ate-the-whole-thing/">primer on the sale</a>, which you can read about here.)</p>
<p>The move is a major one for Google, which has been pushing hard into the mobile advertising space as it seeks to grow its already considerable Web search business. AdMob is arguably the most innovative and fastest out of the gate in the nascent arena.</p>
<p>As I wrote previously about the company&#8217;s prospects: </p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>While there are very few bright spots to look at in the start-up space in Silicon Valley these days, especially those relying on online advertising, the San Mateo, Calif.-based AdMob is at least slightly shiny.</p>
<p>The mobile advertising marketplace, backed by Sequoia Capital and Accel Partners, just got a big slug of funding&#8211;almost $16 million&#8211;to keep pushing to get ads on mobile phones, which has gotten a huge boost from the popularity of the iPhone. </p>
<p>The massive data usage by users of the popular mobile device by Apple (AAPL) has clearly turbocharged AdMob&#8217;s prospects, which were already on the rise. Compared to a year ago, the company said, the number of ads it served more than tripled the number of ads served on a monthly basis to 4.5 billion. </p>
<p>Obviously, the better quality and more actionable nature of ads on improved screens is the reason for the shift, which should accelerate as more smartphones like Google&#8217;s G1 and the newest Blackberry Storm from RIM (RIMM) become more popular too.</p>
<p>Most importantly, even now, AdMob is cash flow-positive, which is not a bad thing to be in the current econalypse. It also has a cushion of cash&#8211;AdMob had previously garnered $15 million in funding from Sequoia and Accel.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not all sunshine and daisies, of course, since the ad market in general is headed for a deep slump, and new markets are not going to grow as quickly, as marketers pull back from spending.</p>
<p>But, when the economy turns, the mobile advertising market is clearly going to be a fast-growing arena, with big players like Google, Yahoo (YHOO), Nokia (NOK) and Microsoft (MSFT) as AdMob competitors (or potential acquirers, especially Google).</p>
<p>With the money it just raised, AdMob said it would be getting ready for that race, and also use it to expand internationally.</p></blockquote>

<p>Silicon Valley legend and now VC Marc Andreessen was making the interview rounds after the settlement between the litigation-addled co-founders of Skype and all the various people they were suing <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091106/skype-soap-opera-finally-cancelled">was announced this morning</a>.</p>
<p>He has been tight-lipped until now, due to the morass of lawsuits.</p>
<p>But, as Andreessen told BoomTown in a phone interview about the aggressive legal tactics of Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis that resulted in them finally seizing a stake in the Internet telephony giant by suing him and many other Silicon Valley players:</p>
<p>&#8220;We did not take it personally. It&#8217;s a clean sheet of paper.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, it is actually a torn, stained and very worn out piece of paper, due to all the various machinations, but <em>bygones</em>!</p>
<p>Andreessen&#8211;who knows a thing or two about legal tussles, if you recall Netscape-Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;said the real point is that it is time to focus on the business of Skype rather than fighting over who controls Skype.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really good to have everyone lined up and rowing in the same direction. We have to capitalize on the opportunity, because Skype is poised for a new wave of growth,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;They have an amazing head of steam, because the logical way for voice and video communications to be conducted will be over the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p> Thus, Zennström and Friis now join the winning buyout group, Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, along with eBay, in owning Skype. </p>

<p>But Index Ventures, which was in, is&#8211;as Heidi Klum might say&#8211;<em>out</em>!</p>
<p>Under the terms of the agreement, Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis will take a 14 percent stake in the company they founded and then sold to eBay (EBAY), which will include an undisclosed investment by them.</p>
<p>I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091104/i-love-the-smell-of-settlement-in-the-morning-skype-founders-set-to-get-10-percent-option-to-buy-three-percent-more-and-two-board-seats/">reported yesterday that the total was 13 percent</a>&#8211;10 percent for the rights to key Skype technology held by the co-founders and the option to invest $83 million for three percent more.</p>
<p>In exchange, the pair will give Skype software essential to its operation and drop their various lawsuits against eBay and Skype&#8217;s buyers.</p>
<p>As for Zennström and Friis&#8217;s egregious use of the courts to grab their 14 percent stake in Skype, litigation they waged after losing their bid to buy Skype back from eBay, Andreessen was being very politic.</p>
<p>&#8220;We love working with aggressive founders and are in favor of founders being involved in their companies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Great founders are not known for being shy and reserved. Look at Bill Gates. It&#8217;s not a question of personality, but of accomplishment.&#8221;</p>

<p>Noting that he had not worked with the pair before, Andreessen (pictured here) said, &#8220;We have a lot of respect for them. We think they&#8217;re geniuses.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, I queried, would he have used such tactics?</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a book club, it&#8217;s a super-serious, high-stakes game,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know; I&#8217;ve not been in the situation they&#8217;re in. If your goal in life is to avoid drama, this is probably the wrong industry for you.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps, but I told him that I doubted even a battle-hardened entrepreneur like Andreessen would use the courts in such a manner to achieve business goals. </p>
<p>To each his own, said Andreessen!</p>
<p>&#8220;One of our investing mottos is that we invest in strength, not lack of weakness,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The question is how big is the opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, apparently, it is big enough to overlook all the drama that has gone on. </p>
<p>Andreessen said he expects to be more involved at Skype&#8211;which, with his $50 million investment, is the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090612/andreessen-completes-raising-dough-for-his-300-million-venture-fund-let-the-investing-begin">biggest deal in his $300 million fund</a>&#8211;than other board members, noting different directors have different roles.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a big board of 23, as I had previously reported. Zennström and Friis are each getting a seat.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are going to be helpful,&#8221; Andreessen said about his fund&#8217;s role at Skype. &#8220;We&#8217;re a company picker, looking for those that have the greatest potential.&#8221;</p>

<p>Andreessen, ever the diplomat, made sure to add that that also means <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/volpi-and-index-ventures-out-of-skype-deal-the-lawsuit-happy-founder-twins-in/">doing business with Index</a>, the member of his Skype consortium that departed as Friis and Zennström (pictured here) entered, due to stark tensions between the two sides.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have a lot of respect for [Index partners Danny Rimer and Mike Volpi] and expect to work with them a lot in the future,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;In fact, I am talking to them today about two other deals.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yesterday, the <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/10/AR2009081000492.html?hpid=topnews">Washington Post reported</a> that rapes of women were escalating dramatically&#8211;if that is even possible considering past devastation&#8211;in the Congo.</p>
<p>Reported the Post:</p>
<p>&#8220;An already staggering epidemic of rape has become markedly worse since the January deployment of tens of thousands of poorly trained, poorly paid Congolese soldiers, with people in front-line villages such as this one saying the soldiers are not so much hunting rebels as hunting women.&#8221;</p>
<p>It follows another <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/05/world/africa/05congo.html?_r=1&#038;scp=4&#038;sq=congo&#038;st=cse">recent report by the New York Times</a> about the rise of rapes of men too. </p>
<p>Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the Congo, where she <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/world/africa/12diplo.html?hp">unveiled a $17 million plan</a> to battle sexual violence in the country.</p>
<p>She said the situation was &#8220;evil in its basest form&#8221;</p>
<p>Ensler’s aim is to end the use of rape as a weapon of war there, which is, in part, a consequence of the region’s coltan trade. Coltan, or columbite tantalite, is a mineral essential to the manufacture of a wide array of consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and laptops.</p>
<p>Clinton mentioned these &#8220;conflict minerals&#8221; during her visit.</p>

<p>At the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/d7tech-demo-immersion">Immersion demoed</a> its TouchSense for touchscreen keyboards and Immersive Messaging.</p>
<p>With TouchSense, the user is not only supposed to be able to get haptic feedback, but can also feel the virtual keys.</p>
<p>Immersive Messaging will also use haptic feedback, as well as gesture recognition, to send messages that employ physical senses rather than text.</p>
<p>See Walt Mossberg and the Immersion guys trade digital hearts. No, really, they did. </p>

<p>What&#8217;s in a name?</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s search service is currently called&#8211;<em>zzzzz</em>&#8211;Live Search.</p>
<p>&#8220;All About Microsoft&#8221; crack blogger <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2440">Mary-Jo Foley of ZDNet</a> recently wrote about the Bing name, which is registered to the company, as well as &#8220;Hook&#8221; and the one that Microsoft is using now as its test name, Kumo.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/a-sneak-peek-look-at-microsofts-new-kumo">Kumo means &#8220;cloud&#8221; and &#8220;spider&#8221;</a> in Japanese, which seems a wee bit esoteric.</p>
<p>Today, <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-yet-another-microsoft-search-brand-this-time-for-phones/">paidContent.org dropped &#8220;Sift&#8221;</a> into the mix, although it seems to be related to mobile phones, along with &#8220;Swivel.&#8221;</p>
<p>I, for one, am feeling both like flour and getting dizzy at the thought of those names.</p>
<p>Foley at ZDnet feels the same, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2562">noting today in a post</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;(Would Microsoft be crazy enough to trademark its general Web search engine and its search engine for mobile with two different names, say Bing and Sift? As Windows Live has shown, truth can be stranger than fiction&#8230;.)&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT), of course, is keeping the name for its search service under tight wraps, but it is obviously going to be spending a shipload of money on its branding in another attempt to catch market leaders Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). </p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090420/update-on-yahoo-microsoft-talks-hot-and-heavy/">Microsoft has been recently talking to Yahoo about a search partnership deal</a>, although they are likely both to keep their brands and search products in any event.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, execs and minions in the know laugh at me loudly when I ask them to leak it to me.</p>
<p>(Note to anyone at Microsoft: Pretty please, someone leak it to me, even if it&#8217;s in the form of a memo from the leaky cauldron that is Yahoo.)</p>

<p>I doubt someone will, though. &#8220;It&#8217;s like Fort Knox secret,&#8221; said one Softie source, referring to the Kentucky fortress where the largest amount of the United States gold reserves are stored.</p>
<p>Hey, if <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auric_Goldfinger">Auric Goldfinger</a>, OddJob and Pussy Galore could get into Fort Knox in that most excellent James Bond film, I can certainly find out the name of Microsoft&#8217;s search service!</p>
<p>Personally, I like Bing, and cherries from Washington state are indeed tasty (and coming soon too!)</p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.heartofwashington.com/consumer/cherries.html">Heart of Washington</a> Web site, its state&#8217;s cherries rate. Some fun factoids:</p>
<p>- Washington State produces more than 50 percent of all the sweet cherries in the United States.<br />
- The Rainier cherry, which is yellow with a red blush, was made from a cross between two dark red cherries, the Van and Bing.<br />
- Americans eat approximately 2.6 pounds of cherries per year.<br />
- There are approximately 53 pitted cherries in one pound of cherries.<br />
- The Bing cherry, which all cherries are measured against, was first developed in 1874 in Milwaukie, Ore.<br />
- The Bing cherry was named after one of Seth Lewelling&#8217;s workers. The Bing cherry was developed by Seth Lewelling.<br />
- Washington cherries are shipped around the world; the top three foreign markets are Canada, Taiwan and Japan.<br />
- In 2001, there were 29,000 acres of sweet cherries in the state.<br />
- The Washington cherry season begins in late May with some product seen at farmer&#8217;s markets. Commercial shipping begins around June 5, and will continue until mid-August. The peak of the season runs from June 20 to Aug. 1.</p>

<p>Or better still: &#8220;If you use Google, we&#8217;ll whack you!&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, that&#8217;s more like it.</p>

<p>The once-hottest-ever start-up&#8211;touted up and down Silicon Valley for its explosive growth back in 2003&#8211;is still a major global brand with a massive 405 million user accounts at the end of 2008. </p>
<p>In fact, Skype&#8217;s size makes media-overhyped Twitter seem, well, <em>twee</em>, by comparison. Twitter had only 9.8 million unique visitors in February, up impressively from 6.1 million in January.</p>
<p>But the hot-or-not comparisons between the two are interesting to think about.</p>
<p>First, as with Twitter, few pay anything for Skype&#8217;s communications services&#8211;essentially, it lets consumers make voice and video calls between computers or to other phones via voice over Internet protocol, or VOIP.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/03/mk-av091_skype_ns_20090322214106.gif"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/03/mk-av091_skype_ns_20090322214106.gif" alt="mk-av091_skype_ns_20090322214106" title="mk-av091_skype_ns_20090322214106" width="183" height="288" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-11301" /></a></p>
<p>Second&#8211;although no one seems to care when it comes to Twitter as yet&#8211;monetization issues dog Skype, which actually had $550 million in revenue last year (see chart).</p>
<p>Still, right or wrong, many investors argue that Skype was a very bad acquisition for eBay (EBAY), which paid $2.6 billion for it in 2005 and there are consistent rumors that eBay is looking to unload the service.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why it recently announced a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123776338990608661.html">plan to enter the corporate market</a>, presumably to give Skype more heft.</p>

<p>Much like, for example, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090324/there-must-be-77-ways-for-twitter-to-make-some-money-but-boomtown-is-backing-the-aniston-solution/">Twitter&#8217;s recent partnership with a new ExecTweets service</a>, a compilation of business figures tweeting, which is sponsored by Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Lastly, of course, Skype is trying new branding to make it seem less shaggy, such as the video below, is part of that push.</p>
<p>As for Twitter, it remains as cute as ever and shows no signs of changing to try and please anyone.</p>
<p><em>Yet.</em></p>

		<description><![CDATA[Facebook, which has been very busy ferreting away to get a presence on all the big cellphone makers, is in talks with mobile handset giant Nokia about integrating the hot social-networking site on its phones.

Its deals like this--as well as building its popular Facebook app for smartphones like the BlackBerry from Research in Motion and the iPhone from Apple--that are spurring huge market share growth in the arena by Facebook.

And there are more deals to come, with cellphone makers like Palm and Motorola, as the smartphone market keeps heating up.

<p>In an article in yesterday&#8217;s <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123439645252474935.html">Wall Street Journal about an alliance being discussed between Facebook and Nokia</a>, came news about the pair working on a deal to deeply integrate the hot social network with the handsets of the world&#8217;s largest maker of mobile phones.</p>
<p>Although BoomTown has seen this movie before&#8211;a similar mobile deal with a Nokia (NOK) investment in Facebook <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-nokia-and-facebook-working-on-mobile-deal-could-involve-investment/">was being bandied about a year ago</a>&#8211;expect more noise than ever when it comes to social-networking sites and mobile devices in 2009.</p>
<p>As you can see from the chart below, Facebook ran past MySpace in the number of unique visitors via mobile phone in the early fall of 2008 and kept climbing.</p>
<p>Said the Journal article: &#8220;In December, Facebook had seven million U.S. mobile users, compared with MySpace&#8217;s 5.7 million, according to Nielsen Co.&#8221; (Full disclosure: MySpace is owned by News Corp. (NWS), which also owns Dow Jones, the owner of this site.)</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/mk-au415_facebo_ns_20090211182136.gif"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/mk-au415_facebo_ns_20090211182136.gif" alt="" title="mk-au415_facebo_ns_20090211182136" width="183" height="259" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9681" /></a></p>
<p>And, indeed, to get this kind of traction, Facebook has been very busy ferreting away to get a presence on all the big cellphone makers, so far mostly by building its popular Facebook application for smartphones like the BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM) and iPhone from Apple (AAPL).</p>
<p>Facebook&#8211;the Journal piece said&#8211;has also been talking to Palm (PALM), which will launch its new Pre smartphone in the spring, and Motorola (MOT), about being integrated into their operating systems too.</p>
<p>The race to be present on mobile devices by everyone and their Internet mother has gotten all hopped up with the introduction of so many smartphones of late, since these devices make any Web app experience much better.</p>
<p>And consumer uptake of these kinds of phones, with big screens and multitouch capabilities, is widely expected to dramatically increase over the next five years,</p>
<p>But here is the dicey money&#8211;or nonmoney, actually&#8211;quote from the article:</p>
<p>&#8220;As with most of the cellphone-software industry, Facebook has yet to find a way to generate meaningful revenue from its mobile services, which include text-messaging features, a mobile Web site and downloadable software. But the number of users accessing its site from phones has grown.&#8221;</p>
<p>Oh dear&#8211;that roughly translates in Facebook-speak to friending <em>without</em> benefits, with costs rising without much (or any) revenue coming in, to speak of.</p>
<p>Of course, many would argue that both Facebook and MySpace, as well other big players, have to still play hard in the mobile market to gain users&#8211;given that consumers are on the move more than ever, digitally-speaking&#8211;even if it takes a while to see financial results.</p>
<p>So while efforts by mobile advertising services, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081114/kara-visits-admob-and-talks-about-how-iphone-turbocharged-the-mobile-advertising-business/">such as AdMob</a>, are trying to make that happen and are definitely promising, it&#8217;s still a game of growth and not revenue or, of course, profits.</p>

<p>In an <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123059580600140977.html">article in The Wall Street Journal today</a> comes the news that &#8220;President- elect Barack Obama&#8217;s call to improve the nation&#8217;s broadband infrastructure has cable and phone company lobbyists maneuvering to get a leg up.&#8221;</p>
<p>To BoomTown, this is akin to Ebenezer Scrooge making his overnight transformation, except without any soul, sincerity or true intent to actually care about the consumer.</p>
<p>God help us, everyone.</p>
<p>Because if these same companies had been around during, say, the critical rollout of the federal highway system or universal telephone access, we&#8217;d all be tooling down dirt roads and talking via tin cans. </p>
<p>Still, a whiff of interest from a new administration&#8211;a move that is much too long in coming, due to a complete lack of leadership by the Feds, who have egregiously ignored exactly how important broadband ubiquity is to the U.S. economy&#8211;and we are apparently off to the races. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s high time, given, as the Journal article points out, &#8220;the U.S. has slipped to 15th from fourth place since 2001 in broadband penetration, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.&#8221;</p>
<p>We are tops in costs of these services, though!</p>
<p><em>Ouch</em>. </p>
<p>Of course, the cable and phone giants are pushing for the government to pay for a lot of it&#8211;as they reap big bucks from high-penetration areas and try to get public dollars to pay for areas that have no broadband access.</p>
<p>As usual, the government will be the piggy bank&#8211;as it should have done much earlier&#8211;doling out tax credits and incentives and backing bonds, grants and vouchers.</p>
<p>Still, said the Journal, the cable and phone giants are bickering over the definition of speed, even as they continue to try to block public broadband projects and public-interest groups try to force the government to impose conditions on private companies.</p>
<p>So, while a new intent by the new leadership in Washington is a good thing, a little bah-humbug on the part of consumers is probably still in order.</p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s more about timing,&#8221; said one person familiar with Twitter&#8217;s motivations. &#8220;There is a strong feeling that there is still an opportunity&#8211;even with the economic downturn&#8211;to blow this thing out.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, combining the world&#8217;s fastest-growing social-networking site with what is quickly becoming the best-known microblogging service is actually a natural fit.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true given that Facebook&#8211;for all its powerful online social connections&#8211;has seen Twitter race past it in innovating in the &#8220;status update&#8221; arena.</p>
<p>While some sources at Facebook said Zuckerberg was becoming frustrated by the buzz Twitter was getting&#8211;a market that should have been dominated by Facebook&#8211;others at the company said he was interested in buying Twitter because of his respect for its progress.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/facebook-logo-1.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/facebook-logo-1-300x112.jpg" alt="" title="facebook-logo-1" width="250" height="80" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-6916" /></a></p>
<p>Indeed, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081124/mark-zuckerberg-talks-twitter-with-john-battelle-when-he-was-talking-to-twitter-about-buying-it/">at the Web 2.0 interview</a>, Zuckerberg called Twitter an &#8220;elegant model&#8221; and said that he was &#8220;really impressed by what they&#8217;ve done.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, with about six million registrations, as reported in October, up 600 percent over the last year, the San Francisco-based Twitter&#8211;launched in 2006&#8211;has had impressive growth.</p>
<p><span id="more-6883"></span></p>
<p>(It has also been plagued by technical issues, which are&#8211;to be fair&#8211;decreasing.)</p>
<p>In any case, for those not familiar with it, the premise of Twitter is dead simple: A registered user logs in via the Internet or a mobile phone and answers the &#8220;What are you doing?&#8221; question the service asks in only 140 characters or fewer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s quite a clever idea, although&#8211;so far&#8211;not a money-making one. </p>
<p>To try to goose that, Twitter&#8217;s board replaced the engineer who created Twitter, Jack Dorsey, with another founder, Evan Williams, who had served as its chairman and chief product officer.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/250px-evan-williams.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/11/250px-evan-williams.jpg" alt="" title="250px-evan-williams" width="250" height="188" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-6904" /></a></p>
<p>The more experienced Williams (pictured here) had already built one company&#8211;Pyra Labs, which created the Blogger blogging service&#8211;that he sold to Google in 2003. He also started the audio and video search site Odeo, where Twitter was actually born.</p>
<p>Still, its investors have not come down on Twitter to hold back its growth efforts, and have handed over $20 million to the start-up so far. In its last round, Twitter was valued at $98 million.</p>
<p>Its funders include: Union Square Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Digital Garage, Spark Capital and Bezos Expeditions, backed by Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. </p>
<p>In addition, well-known Silicon Valley figures, such as Marc Andreessen and Ron Conway, have also invested. Interestingly, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080506/andreessen-to-facebook-board/">Andreessen is also on Facebook&#8217;s board</a>.</p>
<p>Other private investors include FeedBurner Co-Founder (and now Googler) Dick Costolo, former Epinions Co-Founder Naval Ravikant and former Googler Chris Sacca.</p>
<p>Twitter needs all the investors it can get, since it has no revenue, although it has been exploring things like charging business customers and adding advertising into the consumer service.</p>
<p>Lack of revenues was an issue for Facebook, said sources, especially related to fees Twitter pays for delivery of its messages to cellphones. </p>
<p>While the issue has been manageable in the U.S., Twitter cut off its SMS support in some international markets this summer because of too-high costs.</p>
<p>But, if Twitter was offered to Facebook&#8217;s 120 million users, Facebook execs estimated that it might have to deal with huge SMS fees&#8211;up to $75 million annually.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has its own revenue-generating challenges,&#8221; said one person close to the company. &#8220;As much as Twitter would give them a lift in the status area, it was still a worry.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not enough, said several sources, to stop Facebook from making another approach at some point in the future. &#8220;We&#8217;d hate to see Twitter go to another company,&#8221; said one source.</p>
<p>Indeed, while all are even more price-conscious than Facebook, large companies that could also be interested include: Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) or a large telecom company, such as Verizon (VZ).</p>
<p>If it had completed the deal to buy Twitter, it would have been Facebook&#8217;s most significant acquisition by far.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg and Williams did meet and get along well, but the deal was primarily negotiated by Spark Capital partner Bijan Sabet (Spark is a Twitter investor) and Facebook deal guy Dan Rose.</p>
<p>But in this time, at least, the Twitter side was still not interested in selling at the price Facebook had offered.</p>

<p>The $500 million offered was in an all-stock form, said sources on both sides, at the $15 billion valuation that came from the Microsoft&#8217;s investment in the company last October. </p>
<p>The Twitter side felt that figure was inflated and the shares should be valued at the lower figures that have also been reported for Facebook&#8217;s true valuation, more in the $5 billion range.</p>
<p>That would have given the deal a $150 million price tag, which was seen as too low, especially since it was in Facebook stock and not cash initially.</p>
<p>In fact, Twitter wanted cash, which some sources say was offered by Facebook in the $50 to $100 million range, in addition to stock, but taking too much stock was still a major issue.</p>
<p>There are other ways the pair could have approximated a safer choice for Twitter, via warrants, of course, or other methods.</p>
<p>But, said several sources close to Twitter, the primary reason for not selling was because its board simply did not want to yet or perhaps ever. </p>
<p>Said one source: &#8220;The question is, is it really a good idea to sell on the first chance you get?&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, for Twitter, we&#8217;ll just have to wait and see about that, of course.</p>

<p>Here is an amazing chart from a story in The Wall Street Journal recently about mobile phone search preferences, which says a whole lot about why Microsoft (MSFT) is so eager to hand a pile of money over to Verizon Wireless (VZ) to become the default search on its many devices.</p>
<p>Well, as in the PC market and on social-networking sites, because of&#8211;<em>wait for it</em>&#8211;Google (GOOG), of course.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122644861032019047.html">another Journal story</a> recently: </p>
<p>&#8220;Under the terms now being considered, Microsoft would share revenue with Verizon from ads shown in response to cellphone Web searches, with guaranteed payments to the carrier of approximately $550 million to $650 million over five years, or roughly twice what Google offered, these people said.&#8221;</p>
<p>Why so much of a premium, especially since the widgetization of smartphones makes it easier for all players to compete?</p>

<p>While there are very few bright spots to look at in the start-up space in Silicon Valley these days, especially those relying on online advertising, the San Mateo, Calif.-based AdMob is at least slightly shiny.</p>
<p>The mobile advertising marketplace, backed by Sequoia Capital and Accel Partners, just got a big slug of funding&#8211;almost $16 million&#8211;to keep pushing to get ads on mobile phones, which has gotten a huge boost from the popularity of the iPhone. </p>
<p>The number of ads <a href="http://www.admob.com">AdMob</a> is serving on the iPhone jumped to more than 100 million in September, compared to 35 million the month before, for example.</p>
<p>The massive data usage by users of the popular mobile device by Apple (AAPL) has clearly turbocharged AdMob&#8217;s prospects, which were already on the rise. Compared to a year ago, the company said, the number of ads it served more than tripled the number of ads served on a monthly basis to 4.5 billion. </p>
<p>Obviously, the better quality and more actionable nature of ads on improved screens is the reason for the shift, which should accelerate as more smartphones like Google&#8217;s G1 and newest Blackberry Storm from RIM (RIMM) become more popular too.</p>
<p>Most importantly, even now, AdMob is cash flow-positive, which is not a bad thing to be in the current econalypse. It also has a cushion of cash&#8211;AdMob had previously garnered $15 million in funding from Sequoia and Accel.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not all sunshine and daisies, of course, since the ad market in general is headed for a deep slump, and new markets are not going to grow as quickly, as marketers pull back from spending.</p>
<p>But, when the economy turns, the mobile advertising market is clearly going to be a fast-growing arena, with big players like Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), Nokia (NOK) and Microsoft (MSFT) as AdMob competitors (or potential acquirers, especially Google).</p>
<p>With the money it just raised, AdMob said it would be getting ready for that race, and also use it to expand internationally. </p>

<p>What to think of the announcement yesterday that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119617188870905241.html?mod=hps_us_whats_news">Verizon will open itself up to consumers who want to use non-Verizon-sold phones for their wireless service</a>?</p>
<p>Was it a bold way to thwart new rivals, like Google and Apple, who are promising&#8211;but have yet to deliver&#8211;a world without the fascist rule of the &#8220;Soviet ministries,&#8221; as <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/20071021/free-my-phone/">Walt Mossberg has called the cellphone carriers</a>, with new phones, networks and software?</p>
<p>Or perhaps a clever PR feint by the U.S.&#8217;s No. 2 carrier to get regulators (and consumers) off its back as an auction looms for new wireless spectrum, in which Google convinced the Federal Communications Commission to set aside some for a new open network?</p>
<p>Or maybe more consumer confusion, since pricing is unclear and Verizon&#8217;s CDMA technology is not compatible with more GSM networks? </p>
<p>Or maybe, just maybe, it means the American market&#8211;long held hostage by the onerous rules of companies like Verizon&#8211;might finally be like the rest of the world and let consumers make their own choices about the phones and perhaps software they want to use?</p>

<p>Well, we have absolutely no idea, since we&#8217;ll believe it when we see it and when other carriers follow suit. Right now, most seem to love their consumer-trapping walled garden approach, through which they think they are protecting consumers from the wilds of the more democratic wireless world. </p>

<p>Nonetheless, others weighed in on the move, although with different takes:</p>

<p>Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt: &#8220;As the Internet has demonstrated, open models create better services for consumers and stronger businesses for providers.&#8221;</p>

We are proud to support any open access that puts more power in people&#8217;s hands to connect them to the information they want when and where they want it.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2007/11/what-open-verizon-means-less-than-you-think.html">Silicon Alley Insider&#8217;s Dan Frommer</a>: &#8220;Verizon&#8217;s announcement will be more meaningful in a few years when more devices&#8211;not just cellphones&#8211;use wireless data networks.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://valleywag.com/tech/wireless/verizon-calls-googles-multibillion+dollar-bluff-327094.php">Valleywag&#8217;s Owen Thomas</a>: &#8220;But Verizon&#8217;s latest move shows that it&#8217;s not that the phone companies are resistant to the idea of openness. They oppose, rather, the notion that Google should get to set the rules for competition&#8211;rules that will no doubt smooth the way for the sale of mobile advertising on terms favorable to Google&#8217;s offerings.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/11/27/verizon-wireless-opens-up-it-network-whos-next/">TechCrunch&#8217;s Erick Schonfeld</a>: &#8220;You didn’t think Verizon was just going to let Google waltz right in and take its customers for a spin, did you? But if Verizon doesn’t make it easy for developers and unaffiliated device manufacturers to get onto its network, it could end up tripping over its own feet.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://paul.kedrosky.com/archives/2007/11/27/verizon_opening.html">Infectious Greed&#8217;s Paul Kedrosky</a>: &#8220;In practice, what does it really mean? It&#8217;s tough to say and the announcement is short on specifics. For now, color me encouraged, but highly skeptical until we have more than some PR puffery. Will they really let you hook up your own GPS device, wireless data thingie, etc., with no additional fees assuming you have an account? I find that hard to believe, but hey, I can be convinced.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://gigaom.com/2007/11/27/what-it-means-why-verizon-went-open/#more-10789">GigaOm&#8217;s Om Malik</a>: &#8220;Do we really believe that Verizon is going to be happy being Pipes-R-Us?&#8221;</p>
