<p>The new MSN homepage debuts tonight and you would be completely correct in thinking the recipe Microsoft (MSFT) has cooked up to inform its design ethos&#8211;white, clean and hiply modern&#8211;has definite echoes of a certain longtime tech rival.</p>
<p>That would be Apple (AAPL), of course, with a big dollop of Twitter and Facebook tossed in, and finished off with a generous sprinkling of Microsoft&#8217;s new Bing search service.</p>
<p>For those who care: The MSN butterfly logo remains, although it appears to have lost a lot of weight too.</p>

<p>The launch is the first major upgrade of the MSN main page in&#8211;if you can believe it&#8211;a decade, part of an overhaul that the software giant has been doing throughout its money-losing online services division.</p>
<p>That has included the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-steve-ballmer/">launch of Bing in May</a>, which has been a success for Microsoft, adding a small amount of search market share and, more importantly, some much needed respect to its long-beleaguered consumer Web efforts.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s online execs are trying to keep up the innovation momentum with the new MSN redesign and&#8211;as you can see below from the various screenshots&#8211;it is a major shift for the portal site.</p>
<p>Together, MSN and Windows Live have about 100 million unique monthly visitors, putting Microsoft typically third behind Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The company hopes to do better with a fresher MSN, which is clearly aimed, first and foremost, at clearing up the clutter and link-heavy old MSN homepage.</p>
<p>MSN execs said the new main page has about half the &#8220;blue&#8221; links.</p>

<p>The top of the new page features a big image module, with inline video and drastically reduced topic areas&#8211;as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better">BoomTown has previously reported</a>&#8211;limited to news, sports, entertainment, money and lifestyle.</p>

<p>Under that is a more customizable news module, to which feature tabs can also be added, such as for the World Series or&#8211;<em>prolonged sigh</em>&#8211;Balloon Boy coverage.</p>
<p>On the bottom left is a much-goosed local module that resolves to beefed-up local sites, which is right next another section featuring Bing top searches.</p>
<p>Bing is present in every part of the site now, with Microsoft stressing it and using its structured data to improve the consumer experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important for Bing search too, since MSN provides 45 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Communications modules are to the right, midpage and on the bottom. </p>
<p>Unlike AOL and Yahoo, which have added the ability to put third-party email on their homepages, only Hotmail is now available on the new MSN, although this is likely to change soon.</p>
<p>But perhaps the design element that will garner the most attention is the prominent placement of both Twitter and Facebook tabs in the bottom communications module, right next to one for Windows Live.</p>
<p>This allows users to update their status and get instant access to the status of friends and followers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to cut the clutter, while also giving users one convenient place to find what they need quickly,&#8221; said Scott Moore, executive producer of MSN in the U.S., its most important market, in an interview earlier today with me.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are overloaded with information and they wanted us to fix that, even if the service is not ours.&#8221;</p>
<p>The focus on Facebook and Twitter was simply due to intense user interest in the popular social networking sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has popped and Twitter was really growing,&#8221; said Moore, who noted that there was the possibility of adding other third-party apps in the future.</p>
<p>A heavy emphasis on apps was a key <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">strategy of Yahoo&#8217;s homepage redesign</a>, officially launched in late July, which SVP Tapan Bhat touted at an meeting with analysts last week as having increased page views and engagement.</p>
<p>Advertising on the page is perhaps the most conservative part, with units that remain largely as before.</p>
<p>The new MSN homepage will begin rolling out now, eventually reaching about 10 percent of users by early next year. After that, it is expected to become widely available to U.S. customers and then go worldwide.</p>

<p>In a week, the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace will gather at a swanky new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business. </p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities. </p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source. </p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community. </p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>Tomorrow, Yahoo will officially unveil the latest redesign of its homepage, an almost complete rejiggering of the look and feel of one of the most trafficked sites on the Internet.</p>
<p>The latest launch comes after about a half-dozen redesigns the homepage since Yahoo was founded, the last one in 2006.</p>
<p>You can read the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">full story of the new page here</a>, but BoomTown thought it might also be instructive to take a look at what has come before it, seeing how the Yahoo (YHOO) front page has evolved since 1994.</p>
<p>Incredibly, that was 15 years ago.</p>
<p>Personally, I like 1994 and 1995, which were clean and clear with big font sizes, due to Yahoo positioning itself as a directory of the Web, although the 1995 logo and swirly buttons are wacky.</p>
<p>The one from 1997 is also an improvement, in the same list theme.</p>
<p>But in 2000, the whole page suddenly started bloating badly, with too much color and too many links.</p>
<p>Weight gain continued in 2002, and the page got even more colorfully confusing with ever-smaller font sizes in 2004.</p>
<p>The 2006 version was, thankfully, much simpler, but still a packed-out mess.</p>
<p>That new incarnation from the Silicon Valley icon, which you can see above, is a more back to the basics in style.</p>
<p>The latest launch, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090214/how-is-yahoos-massive-metro-homepage-redesign-going-it-depends-on-who-you-ask/">Yahoo had previously said was coming in the fall</a>, rolls out today for the hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. and will be extended to France, the U.K., Germany and India later this week.</p>

<p>This weekend on Twitter, someone paid BoomTown a compliment of a sort: &#8220;I read you because you are a solid fact-based reporter with a Miss Cleo intuition <img src='http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> &#8220;</p>
<p><em>Yipes</em>, because of being fact-based, I had to point out that the well-known-via-infomercials Psychic Friends Network shaman <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Cleo">turned out to be a bit of a fraud</a>, although she&#8217;s always entertaining, with her jaunty Jamaican accent (she was not, of course, from there).</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it got me thinking about how I would predict what would result from all the deal-making that is suddenly in the air, after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080915/dear-web-20-its-the-economy-stupid/">six months of ennui from the current economic downturn</a>.</p>
<p>While Silicon Valley has been less impacted than, say, New York, things have certainly been tightening up here, with layoffs at big companies and small ones and less frenetic activity than one had come to expect from Web 2.0.</p>
<p>But last week, the pulse seemed to quicken a little with the various rumors that have swirled around Twitter, the variety of controversies around Facebook and the nascent chit-chatting now taking place between Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Thus, with a third eye to the future, here&#8217;s my take on what could happen. <em>Big caveat</em>, though: Much of what follows is all my speculation and analysis and not based on any psychic feelings.</p>
<p><strong>TWITTER TWADDLE</strong></p>
<p>Last week, I did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090409/who-will-be-twitters-bestest-search-friend-google-and-microsoft-engage-in-yet-another-pick-me-face-off">rather long reported post on what was going on</a> after rumors broke out that Twitter was in &#8220;late-stage&#8221; acquisition negotiations with Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>While an imminent deal was not pending two weeks ago, I wrote that Twitter was indeed the apple of Google&#8217;s eye at the moment&#8211;specifically and now more so than ever, many sources tell me, of its Search Product VP Marissa Mayer&#8211;for some kind of search deal that could eventually lead to an acquisition. </p>
<p>But I also noted that Microsoft was also in the picture, vying for Twitter&#8217;s affections, and I doubted that Microsoft and Google would be the only ones interested in the hot-as-July-in-Alabama microblogging start-up.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the plus for Twitter: It&#8217;s on a hype rocket ship, its growth is also accelerating and it does not need money, since it just got a big slug of venture funding.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s also a minus and why I also predict that there are only two outcomes: a sale very soon or a major investment by one of its suitors.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/minicoopercabrio.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/minicoopercabrio-250x153.jpg" alt="minicoopercabrio" title="minicoopercabrio" width="250" height="153" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-12177" /></a></p>
<p>While I would love for its founders, including Biz Stone and CEO Evan Williams, to stick to their claims of remaining a “strong, profitable, independent company,” a cash offer of over $500 million or a cash-and-stock offer of slightly more will probably be enough to take them off the table, mostly because the getting might never get this good again.</p>
<p>That offer is most likely to come from Google, if I had to make a bet, which is well known for moving quickly when it sees a tasty treat it desires.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a shame, since once the start-up actually does enter these kinds of &#8220;late-stage&#8221; talks <em>for real</em>, some deserved shine will come right off Twitter&#8217;s cute little MINI convertible of a company.</p>
<p>Instead, Twitter might want to take a page from Facebook and let itself grow its own as it explores revenue options, while perhaps taking a large investment and striking a significant commercial deal with a strategic partner like Google or Microsoft.</p>
<p>Then, with a modicum of independence and the possibility of acquisition if it turned out it needed help, Twitter could forge its own destiny.</p>
<p>And wouldn&#8217;t that be nice if Google or Microsoft didn&#8217;t just gobble up every innovative thing they cannot seem to think of on their own?</p>
<p><strong>FACEBOOK FOLLIES</strong></p>
<p>I will be reporting more very soon on what&#8217;s been going on as the powerful social-networking site deals with its fast-growing pains&#8211;up to 200 million users now, which is about as impressive at it gets in the Internet space.</p>
<p>Not so impressive is the variety of high-profile management mishaps that have plagued the company of late&#8211;from its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/mark-zuckerberg-talks-about-facebook-terms-of-service-snafu">Terms of Service debacle</a> to its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090324/facebook-responds-to-redesign-feedback-sort-of">redesign rough road</a> to the way Facebook <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially">recently parted with CFO GIdeon Yu</a>.</p>
<p>To say Facebook treated Yu&#8211;a well-regarded figure in the tech sector, who had also raised an awful lot of funding for the start-up&#8211;with very little of the kind of grace he deserved and that it should have displayed is an understatement.</p>
<p>In the creation of a significant start-up, tensions inevitably flare and there is typically a lot of management turnover, which is natural, for a variety of reasons on all sides.</p>
<p>Why Facebook had to insecurely tout its stable financial state while backhandedly slapping Yu by saying it was in a search for a CFO with &#8220;public company experience&#8221;&#8211;Yu had enough public company experience to make that deeply insulting&#8211;was unclear, when it simply could have said he was moving on in the way most such partings are done.</p>
<p>The conflict between its public statement and an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090402/the-entire-facebook-goodbye-gideon-we-are-the-money-champions-memo/">internal memo I obtained</a> on Yu&#8217;s departure underscored the problem.</p>
<p>Insecure and way too focused on optics is probably an issue Facebook will have to deal with as it moves toward what the company hopes will be in IPO in 2010 or 2011. Rather than all the noise, its only goal should be shaping up its revenue and profit performance and, hopefully, building a cohesive management.</p>
<p>But does that mean current CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg will have to eventually step aside before a public offering and make way for a more experienced CEO type, as Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page did for Eric Schmidt, as some have suggested?</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/a_cool_cucumber.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/a_cool_cucumber-250x188.jpg" alt="a_cool_cucumber" title="a_cool_cucumber" width="250" height="188" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-12178" /></a></p>
<p>I predict not. Because, for all his careening from crisis to crisis of late, I have no question that Zuckerberg&#8211;who has fended off big-money acquisition attempts by big players with a cool-cucumberness that Twitter&#8217;s execs should study carefully&#8211;has every intention of riding Facebook to the very top&#8211;or even bottom.</p>
<p>Clearly modeling himself as a modern-day Steve Jobs (who was fired before triumphantly returning) or Bill Gates (a better comparison), Zuckerberg is a visionary techie who wants to style himself as a crack businessman too.</p>
<p>And with a lot of control over the fate of Facebook, he&#8217;s going to see his vision of Facebook and himself out.</p>
<p><strong>THE ODD COUPLE</strong></p>
<p>Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Oops, I mean can two once-bickering-over-a-hostile-takeover companies start talking without driving each other crazy?</p>
<p>Last week, the news, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090410/yahoos-bartz-and-microsofts-ballmer-finally-talking-about-search-and-advertising-partnership/">first reported here</a> Friday, that Yahoo was involved in preliminary talks with Microsoft about an extensive commercial advertising and search partnership&#8211;should have come as no surprise.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/oddcoup2.jpg" alt="oddcoup2" title="oddcoup2" width="239" height="196" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12183" /></a></p>
<p>After all, Yahoo and Microsoft are laggards in the lucrative search space, especially compared to the dominant Google, and they must somehow find a way to get along to get some traction in the marketplace.</p>
<p>But will they or will it be all Felix Unger and Oscar Madison battling until the end of time? While I loved that television show, and movie too, the Yahoo-Microsoft version is not riveting anymore to some.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am so bored with their not-coming-to-a-deal,&#8221; said one prominent exec, who was involved in the first go-round between the companies. &#8220;They need to make a deal, and if they don&#8217;t make a deal now, I will be both bored and in shock.&#8221;</p>
<p>That made me laugh out loud when I heard it. But it&#8217;s not funny, I know, because this is <em>serious stuff</em>! </p>
<p>Okay, then, seriously, this pair needs to come to some sort of partnership agreement like Miss Cleo needs a new reputation. </p>
<p>And, because I am a hopeful psychic, I predict they finally will, dropping all the emotion and history and realizing that they are wasting time and opportunity.</p>
<p>After all, while the future isn&#8217;t written, it can&#8211;a lot of the time&#8211;be both inevitable and utterly obvious.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123852657881174747.html#mod">Wall Street Journal also reported the news</a>, noting that the huge social-networking start-up was looking for a CFO with &#8220;public company experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>But several sources within the company said the departure was more due to an increasingly strained relationship between Yu and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg over strategic disagreements about a wide range of issues, from increasing advertising revenue to fund-raising discussions with investors.</p>
<p>&#8220;At Facebook, you&#8217;re either with Mark or you&#8217;re not,&#8221; said one source at the 800-person company, located in Palo Alto, Calif., and founded five years ago. &#8220;And, if you&#8217;re not, you leave.&#8221;</p>
<p>As a sign of that, Yu was out of the company HQ immediately today after a meeting, said several sources.</p>
<p>Facebook confirmed the move in a statement, focusing instead on its hope for an IPO sometime in the future:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>&#8220;Facebook confirms that CFO Gideon Yu will be leaving the company. Gideon has played an important role in helping us achieve our financial success, building a strong finance team and establishing the core financial operations of our company. We are grateful to Gideon for his contributions to Facebook and what we are trying to accomplish. Despite the poor economic climate, we are pleased that our financial performance is strong and we are well positioned for the next stage of our growth. We have retained Spencer Stuart to lead our search for a new CFO and will be looking for someone with public company experience.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>In addition, trying to stanch the rumors of its financial weakness and need to raise more funds, Facebook said in its internal memo to staff that it was on the path toward a public offering soon, with revenue growth up 70 percent in 2009 and EBITDA profitability this year, and that it would be cash-flow positive in 2010. </p>
<p>The memo also painted Yu&#8217;s departure as another step toward its much anticipated IPO, although it is clearly an ouster of much more complex internal reasons about how Facebook is run.</p>
<p>Facebook has had a lot of those in its short history.</p>
<p>From come-and-then-gone Google tech exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080818/the-curious-case-of-facebooks-benjamin-ling-and-sheryl-sandberg">Ben Ling</a> to former COO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook">Owen Van Natta</a> to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080511/facebooks-cto-dangelo-to-leave">pair who started Facebook</a> with Zuckerberg, the fast-growing start-up has seen more executive turnover and turmoil than most big companies.</p>
<p>In fact, Yu&#8211;who was an exec at both Yahoo (YHOO) and YouTube and integral to its sale to Google&#8211;replaced former CFO Mike Sheridan in 2007, in another case of a key exec being replaced. </p>
<p>Some inside and outside the company were quick to blame COO Sheryl Sandberg for Yu&#8217;s departure&#8211;probably due to the fact that the pair&#8217;s relationship was initially tense when the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080304/sheryl-sandberg-will-become-coo-of-facebook">well-known Google exec arrived a year ago</a>. That has been much less so of late, sources said.</p>
<p>And while Facebook can be a highly political place, with an unusual level of passive-aggressive infighting among execs, it is also a place where Zuckerberg and his wishes firmly hold sway.</p>
<p>And those wishes included the fact that Zuckerberg has long and publicly maintained that Facebook&#8217;s growth was paramount over a focus on monetization of the service.</p>
<p>Yu is known internally to be more conservative fiscally, pushing on Zuckerberg to ramp ad revenue more quickly and to consider a range of options outside of IPO, including selling the company. </p>
<p>Many current and former execs had hoped the company would IPO, a process that has been dragged out due to the weaker economy. But&#8211;barring that&#8211;many had also hoped it would sell to a larger company like Google (GOOG) or Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>In fact, Microsoft has expressed interest in buying Facebook many times, and it was Yu and Van Natta who were key to getting the software giant to outbid Google to invest in the company at an astounding $15 billion valuation.</p>
<p>After raising more than $500 million previously, Yu has more recently been busy working with top execs on the best way to raise more funds for Facebook, in order to allow it grow faster and give it a deeper financial cushion. </p>
<p>High user growth has blown past Facebook&#8217;s internal projections, which is both an audience blessing and a cost curse.</p>
<p>But that fund raising has been at a much lower valuation and in a very weak economic climate, adding to stress internally at Facebook, many said.</p>
<p>Yu has held a number of meetings with investors, many of whom have told me they have asked him consistently about the monetization issues at Facebook and exactly when Zuckerberg would turn on the ad spigot at the service.</p>
<p>Yu has also has been involved in some recent debt financing of equipment, which is not as unusual for a fast-growing company as some recent reports have portrayed it, although that might also have been a source of tensions.</p>
<p>How to answer prospective new investors has probably been at the heart of his problems with Zuckerberg, who has been known to run hot and cold on top managers, especially with those who disagree with him too much.</p>
<p>That was clearly the case with Yu.</p>
<p>But, said many execs at the company, Zuckerberg&#8217;s conviction that growth is key over all other concerns&#8211;about which the company today is taking the edge off by noting sunnier financial results in the internal document&#8211;has been the correct one.</p>
<p>Currently, Facebook is veering in on 200 million users, which represents an astounding accomplishment.</p>
<p>But how it is going to take those numbers and make Facebook into a revenue-rich company on par with its increasing power on the Web is the question it will face until, of course, it does. </p>
<p>Besides the current drama over Yu today, Facebook has also recently been embroiled in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090324/facebook-responds-to-redesign-feedback-sort-of/">unhappiness about its recent redesign</a> and separately, about <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/liveblogging-the-facebook-our-tos-is-your-tos-press-conference/">onerous changes to its Terms of Service</a>.</p>
<p>Facebook has since backtracked on both issues, likely adding to the level of pressure on Zuckerberg and top execs.</p>
<p>And that is not even mentioning the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090213/law-and-disorder-the-curse-of-the-winklevii">curse of the Winklevii</a>&#8211;it seems the fun never stops at Facebook HQ!</p>
<p>On an <em>actually</em> more amusing note, I once nicknamed Yu &#8220;Death Cat.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070816/the-men-and-no-women-facebook-of-facebook-management">I wrote in mid-2007</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Like that cat named Oscar who can detect death, Yu seems to have an amazing ability to get a sweet job at the hot Web company of the moment at just the right time. Case in point: He left Yahoo as its treasurer and went to YouTube as its CFO just a month before it sold to Google for $1.6 billion, a deal in which Yu apparently played a key role. Then, on his way to a spot as a junior partner at also-hot VC firm Sequoia Capital, he grabbed the Facebook CFO job in July. I say we watch where Yu goes and follow stealthily behind so as not to be detected.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>It&#8217;s more than likely Yu will pop up again soon in Silicon Valley in another prominent CFO job or as a venture investor. Although, after today&#8217;s events, this digital cat has definitely lost one life.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s true in the Highlights section, for example, which Facebook said will again look more like the old News Feed.</p>
<p>And the social-networking site also said it would give users more control via better filtering tools of the stream of information that Facebook has focused on making more prominent&#8211;and which some say makes the service looks too much like a morbidly obese version of the hot microblogging site, Twitter.</p>
<p>It also said it was &#8220;working on a few design changes to help&#8221; users find what they want, another complaint about the new look.</p>
<p>But, as Product Director Chris Cox noted in a section of a  called &#8220;Old Vs. New&#8221;:</p>
<p>&#8220;Since Facebook started in 2004, we&#8217;ve been through several redesigns. <p>Since we launched Facebook&#8217;s home page design, we&#8217;ve received thousands of e-mails, Wall posts and comments from you along with direct feedback from all of our friends and family. If you&#8217;ve already given us feedback, thank you. Hearing what you have to say, whether criticism or praise, helps us build a product that serves you better.</p>
<p>Whenever we build something new or tweak something old, our motivation is the same: to help you share with the people you care about and find out what&#8217;s happening with them. Before we launch any new product, it first must pass a process of design, development and testing with a more limited user audience. If those results are satisfactory, we then release it for all of you to use. We know that no amount of testing is as valuable as what you have to say. For this reason, we will always look to you, our users, to tell us what is working and what isn&#8217;t so we can continually make improvements. </p>
<p>Here are the top four things we&#8217;ve been hearing from all of you about the changes, and the areas where we&#8217;re focusing on improvements immediately and over the next several weeks.</p>
<p>Add more control and relevance in the stream</p>
<p>One of the great parts of Facebook is the ability to share and consume different types of content, such as photos, videos and notes, all in one place. We&#8217;ve heard from you that you want even more variety and control in your stream, and for it to update automatically. Some specific improvements we&#8217;re making are:</p>
<p>Live updating: One of the most common requests is the ability to see your stream update automatically. We will be adding the ability to turn on auto updating in the near future so you no longer need to refresh the page.</p>
<p>Photo tags: In order to surface more photos you might like to see, we&#8217;ll be adding photos tagged of your friends to the stream. This will happen in the coming weeks.</p>
<p>More choices for applications: We&#8217;ve heard feedback that there is a lot of application content appearing in the stream. We will be giving you tools to control and reduce application content that your friends share into your stream.</p>
<p>Currently, the content filters on the left screen allow you to select the types of content you would like to see. Over time, we&#8217;ll continue to give you more control over what&#8217;s in your main stream and how you consume it. We have the eventual goal of building filters that summarize this activity so you can see a more condensed view of what&#8217;s been going on. We&#8217;re also thinking about ways of filtering out some of the Wall posts and content directed to specific people to focus more on posts shared with everyone.</p>
<p>See more Highlights</p>
<p>Right now, we&#8217;re making improvements to the Highlights section on the right-hand side of your home page. Highlights will update more frequently and will show you more content throughout the day to mirror more closely the content that the earlier News Feed provided.</p>
<p>Find things more easily</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important that you are able to find everything you&#8217;re interested in, or we&#8217;re not succeeding in giving you the right level of control. We&#8217;re currently working on a few design changes to help you find these things more easily, such as:</p>
<p>Moving requests to the top of the right column: Friend requests and event invites will be more prominent.<br />
Easier way to create a Friends List filter: From the filters on the left, you will be able to create a new list of friends with which to filter the stream.</p>
<p>Application bookmarks continue to live in the toolbar at the bottom left of the page. You can quickly access your groups, events and other favorite applications from the bottom bar on any page.</p>
<p>Old vs. New</p>
<p>Since Facebook started in 2004, we&#8217;ve been through several redesigns. Each was built with the intention of making it easier to share and understand what&#8217;s going on with the people you care about. Redesigns are generally hard to manage, in part because change is always hard and in part because we may miss improvements that any individual user may like to see. We keep in mind that there are 175 million people on Facebook, and everyone uses the site differently. We listen to feedback from our users, data on how the site is used, and our intuitions as builders and designers to create the product that provides the best experience across the board.</p>
<p>With the recent home page changes, we&#8217;re trying to present the right balance between what&#8217;s happening right now and what&#8217;s interesting over a longer period of time. We realize that both are important and getting them both right is crucial for the product to work. In the last few weeks, you&#8217;ve seen us shift the main emphasis towards real-time conversations and updates as the entry point to Facebook. We&#8217;re working hard to make this stream more valuable, and also to build out the richness and relevance of the Highlights section.</p>
<p>Your feedback means a lot, and we sort through everything we receive. The best way to give us direct feedback—to ensure that we can consolidate it—is through the feedback link on the home page tour. In the meantime, thanks for your support.</p>

<p>Bhat, who is SVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Front Doors, Communities and Network Services, said the company was completing the first phase of its &#8220;bucket testing&#8221; and collecting feedback, but that, &#8220;Bottom line is we&#8217;re getting closer to the final design, but we&#8217;re not quite there yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed not, according to several sources at Yahoo (YHOO), who said that the massive underhaul of the homepage has been a much more complex, much dicier effort and was taking a lot longer than expected to launch. </p>

<p>When the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080917/a-first-look-at-the-new-yahoo-homepage-redesign-apps-rule/">redesign&#8211;which is called &#8220;Metro&#8221; internally&#8211;was announced last September</a>, Bhat said the changes would initially impact less than one percent of worldwide users in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and India.</p>
<p>But he also said they would then be rolled out to a wider and wider circle over the next six months. That has not happened, obviously.</p>
<p>Why? One key reason: Some results in limited testing showing actual declines in traffic, both from pointing outward more and also having people stay on the homepage with beefed-up &#8220;one-click&#8221; features.</p>
<p>The biggest issue is openness, which is aggressive in the new design, especially for Yahoo. </p>
<p>But it is a move pushed strongly by former CEO Jerry Yang. The idea is that Yahoo was a &#8220;starting point&#8221; for consumers was one of his key strategies.</p>
<p>That includes adding in lots of widget-like applications, or apps, onto the homepage from outside partners, and many more links to sites all over the Web.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pointing people off Yahoo and they are going,&#8221; said one exec about Yahoo&#8217;s first massive redesign since 2006. &#8220;While being open is a good thing, it also means less traffic inside Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said another: &#8220;A lot of us want it to point more to great Yahoo services we offer instead of giving everyone else the benefit of our size.&#8221;</p>
<p>And the results so far, several sources said, have definitely caught the attention of new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who some say might be considering slowing the wider rollout of the new homepage that insiders said was expected to be well on its way by spring.</p>
<p><span id="more-9825"></span></p>
<p>Delay is, of course, common in massive projects like this, especially in this case, since the Yahoo homepage is a powerful &#8220;firehose&#8221; all over Yahoo and the Web.</p>
<p>When I contacted Bhat earlier this week to ask about the status of the homepage redesign, he would not comment about when it would roll out widely or about results of the testing, or give me access to the redesigned pages.</p>
<p>But he did kindly offer to walk me through the progress so far, next week at Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale.</p>
<p>Then an update from Bhat suddenly appeared last night, in which he outlined that positive and negative feedback from that small number of Yahoo customers who have been using the new homepage.</p>
<p>Apparently, testers love the streamlined look and feel and the apps, and prefer the new page over the current one.</p>
<p>They also want even more apps, though, and think Yahoo should nix the darker color, as well as give easier access to mail and other services.</p>
<p>One assumes that is just a tiny bit of the feedback, especially given how dramatic the changes are.</p>
<p>In a post last fall when the redesign was announced by Bhat, I wrote that Yahoo was &#8220;employing a design that more significantly allows users to customize the starting page in a way that essentially amounts to a kind of My Yahoo-lite for everyone.&#8221;</p>
<p>That meant the ability to get to information and services more quickly, with links to outside email providers, initially from Google (GOOG) and Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL.</p>
<p>The test design also includes a prominent left-hand vertical bar, with applications from both Yahoo properties and third-party services like eBay (EBAY), which are easy to add and remove.</p>
<p>Eventually, Bhat said at the time, there would be thousands of apps, from Yahoo and also from outside developers.</p>
<p>&#8220;People want broadcast and narrowcast at the same time,&#8221; said Bhat then. &#8220;They want choices, but they also don&#8217;t want to do the work involved [in programming their own homepage].&#8221;</p>
<p>Noting that it was not the dashboard approach of My Yahoo or iGoogle, Bhat added at the time: &#8220;People are time-starved&#8230;so it is important to the user to get to their relevant daily information as quickly as possible without having to click around.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, said several sources at Yahoo who have seen the Metro results so far, by giving them more options, especially outside ones, clicking around is precisely what users do. </p>

<p>As many of you know, we started testing new concepts for the Yahoo! homepage last fall, with the goal of helping to simplify the Web for the more than 300 million people around the world who visit the site each month.</p>
<p>We are wrapping up the first phase of our &#8220;bucket testing&#8221; and have gleaned some great insights from people in the US, UK, France and India who have tried out the new page. We&#8217;ve done a number of things to collect input&#8211;from reading your comments here on Yodel to reviewing online feedback forms and customer care inquires to meeting with many of you in person and online. Bottom line is we’re getting closer to the final design, but we&#8217;re not quite there yet.</p>
<p>Before I share details around what we&#8217;ve learned, I wanted to give a quick recap of some of the functionality we&#8217;ve added over the past few months since just a fraction of you have experienced it firsthand.</p>
<p>Back in September, we introduced a new section called &#8220;My Apps.&#8221; The great part about having apps on your homepage is that you can easily check in and get more done&#8211;from reading and responding to multiple email accounts to browsing local movie listings&#8211;all without leaving the page.</p>
<p>Today, we&#8217;ve enhanced that experience and we&#8217;re testing more than 25 apps that will keep you updated with whatever you want to know. New additions include apps from eBay, Forbes.com, Wired.com and more top brands. We&#8217;ve also beefed up the Sports and Finance apps, for example, providing schedules, team standings, blogs links and more, plus one-click access to your stock portfolios and stock quotes. The best part is that the &#8220;My Apps&#8221; section is now customizable so you can add and remove apps (check out this screenshot) so your homepage reflects what matters most to you.</p>
<p>Heres what we&#8217;ve heard from our testers:</p>
<p>Positive Feedback</p>
<p>    * People are happy with the streamlined look and feel<br />
    * There&#8217;s lots of love for the applications<br />
    * Most testers said they prefer the new homepage over the current homepage</p>
<p>One comment that sums it up nicely:</p>
<p>&#8220;Well&#8211;I was surprised at first at how little change was introduced, and liked that. Now I&#8217;m surprised by how much change actually is packed in, but is more interaction based&#8230;Basically it&#8217;s deceptively different&#8211;looks and feels the same, but much more functionality built in at a new layer.&#8221; &#8211;Thomas </p>
<p>What We&#8217;re Working On</p>
<p>Now that we&#8217;ve got a critical mass of input, we’re translating it into updated versions of the page for ongoing testing. Here are some highlights.</p>
<p>    * The #1 thing we&#8217;re hearing you want is more apps and we&#8217;ll be adding many apps in the coming weeks<br />
    * Most didn&#8217;t like the dark color that we tested initially&#8211;see the screenshot below of the new visual treatments we&#8217;re testing<br />
    * Easier ways to access and preview email and instant messaging accounts are in the works<br />
    * It should be easier to get to other Yahoo! services that you&#8217;ve come to rely upon</p>

<p>The redesign is a huge and complex endeavor. According to comScore&#8217;s July stats, Yahoo (YHOO) has about 82 million daily U.S. visitors to its homepages.</p>
<p>Most of those visitors use the Yahoo main homepage, which is fully programmed by the company. </p>
<p>Making such a shift will also be a big perceptual deal for Yahoo, which needs to prove it has remained current and open, especially compared to faster-growing rivals like Facebook.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been trying to reinvigorate itself of late, after a disastrous takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT) and a weakening of its business and its stock price.</p>
<p>Because of all this, the Yahoo brand has also doubtlessly been tarnished.</p>
<p>Thus, making a success of its new design is critical, and Yahoo&#8217;s CEO Jerry Yang has been touting the idea that Yahoo must be the &#8220;starting point&#8221; to the Web for users.</p>

<p>As before, there will be a main information module at the center of the homepage, &#8220;pulse&#8221; and news area on the bottom-right and -left, and search and navigation at the very top.</p>
<p>Bhat said the changes were made after a lot of research of user behavior and also after paying attention to key trends such as the widgetization of applications and the trend toward openness.</p>
<p>The new look is not aimed at the hardcore user, who might want to endlessly tweak the Yahoo homepage, although those options will remain for those who prefer them.</p>
<p>But, Bhat said, more people wanted quick access to things like email without having to launch apps. Instead, users will be able to see it all on the main page.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not a dashboard approach of My Yahoo or iGoogle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People are time-starved &#8230; so it is important to the user to get to their relevant daily information as quickly as possible without having to click around.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bhat said the rollout tomorrow will not be final and that Yahoo will keep making changes, depending on reaction.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want 300 million people opposed to change,&#8221; said Bhat, <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2008/09/17/testing-testing-a-new-yahoo-com/">who wrote a blog post on the changes here</a>. &#8220;So, we are going to be listening hard.&#8221;</p>

<p>Today, we debut our new redesign of the home screen of <a href="http://allthingsd.com">AllThingsD.com</a>.</p>
<p>It is, in fact, our <em>second</em> redesign since we launched the site in late April of 2007, although it is a much more drastic redesign, with a lot more elements added.</p>
<p>Why did we do it? No, we are not hyperactive (OK, we <em>are</em>, but we are taking medication for that).</p>
<p>Actually, it is because we in the ATD brain trust (that would be Walt Mossberg and me), along with our many much-more-intelligent staffers and advisers, wanted to bring even more digital news and analysis to our readers by making more stories available on the front page from us and also from around the Web. </p>
<p>Our aim was simple: Now newsier than ever!</p>
<p>In fact, we hope you will find our new look linktastic, as we try hard to embrace the notion that ATD&#8217;s audience wants to be able to find great tech and media stories anywhere and everywhere. </p>
<p>Just fyi, the inside sections remain exactly the same&#8211;it is only the front page that has undergone the renovation.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a quick tour, from the top to the bottom of the page:</p>
<p><strong>Megablog:</strong> We combined the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com">BoomTown</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com">John Paczkowski&#8217;s Digital Daily</a> blogs in one rolling one in the center rail.</p>
<p>We felt that it allowed us to feature a lot more of our stories on the main page longer, up to 20 typically, and also made it easier for readers to find stories before they dropped off the front.</p>
<p>We will be adding more material to this section soon, as we develop our content further.</p>
<p><a href="http://walt.allthingsd.com"><strong>Walt Mossberg:</strong></a> Walt&#8217;s weekly <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com">Personal Technology</a> and <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com">Mailbox</a> columns and <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com">Mossblog</a>, as well as <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com">Katherine Boehret&#8217;s Mossberg Solution</a>, move up and to the right in a high-profile spot.  </p>
<p>As ever, Walt is the site&#8217;s amazing anchor and a tech consumer&#8217;s greatest adviser, telling it like it is and writing reviews that matter.</p>
<p><strong>Tech Headlines:</strong> On the top left, we wanted to bring in the stellar work from our Dow Jones brethren at The Wall Street Journal, Barron&#8217;s and MarketWatch, as well as from the Dow Jones newswires, to give readers links to as many stories as we can as news breaks.</p>
<p>This section will be updated every nine minutes to keep it fresh and new.</p>
<p><a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com"><strong>Voices:</strong></a> This section on the left remains the same, except it goes vertical. We try to hand-select (no stinkin&#8217; algorithm for us) from across the digital blogosphere, so we can feature blog posts we think you need to see to keep up. </p>
<p>Also, expect more guest bloggers who write original posts just for ATD, like one tomorrow from Slide&#8217;s Keith Rabois, giving BoomTown a hard time for our problem with juvenile widgets.</p>
<p><strong>The Tech Top 10:</strong> Also on the left, just below Voices, we keep our edited Tech Top 10, a list of the stories we think you need to know about every day. </p>
<p><strong>Video:</strong> On the right is our featured video. We do a lot of video at ATD and we will feature our latest-posted here. </p>
<p><strong>Tech Around the Web:</strong> Also on the right, we are posting, via RSS, the feed from four digital news sources we like and think are useful for our audience.</p>
<p>Two are editorially driven sites, <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org">paidContent</a> and <a href="http://www.gigaom.com">GigaOm</a>, who we believe are combining the energy of the blogosphere and also providing readers with trusted reporting that also adheres to the standards of accuracy and ethics we try to operate under too.</p>
<p>This is a big focus for us at ATD and we want to point readers to high-quality material. They say you are judged by the company you keep and we could not agree more.</p>
<p>Both <a href="http://www.digg.com">Digg</a> and <a href="http://www.techmeme.com">Techmeme</a>, of course, are the key news aggregators of the sector and we like how helpful they are in surfacing important tech and media stories for readers.</p>
<p>Just click on each tab to get to each section. This section will also be constantly refreshed throughout the day.</p>
<p><strong>More ads:</strong> Well, we have to pay the bills, don&#8217;t we? We hope you do find them useful and don&#8217;t find them too intrusive. </p>
<p>There will be even more to come from us in the coming weeks, especially as we gear up for the sixth edition of the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/d"><strong>D: All Things Digital</strong></a> conference, which is taking place May 27 to 29. </p>
