<p>In BoomTown&#8217;s bold quest to annoyingly stick a Flip digital video camera in the face of every Yahoo senior exec, this week I worked the last nerve of its CTO and EVP of Products, Aristotle &#8220;Ari&#8221; Balogh.</p>
<p>Actually, the 45-year-old Balogh is a very calm and pleasant man, especially considering the huge responsibility that has been foisted on him by CEO Carol Bartz to rejigger how Yahoo (YHOO) makes its products and services and deploy its technology in a more efficient, centralized and most of all, innovative manner.</p>
<p>It is actually a process that was started under the previous leadership, especially President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>But now, after a number of reorgs, a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones">wide swath of Yahoo is under Balogh&#8217;s purview</a>&#8211;from search to open initiatives to product development to trying to fix Yahoo&#8217;s big problem of never quite getting its innovations out the door.</p>
<p>To explain all this, Balogh sat down with me twice&#8211;he is clearly a glutton for punishment&#8211;to talk about where Yahoo stood as it sought to dig itself out of its long slump and reemerge as the potent Internet force it once was.</p>
<p>While he successfully avoided the questions about Yahoo&#8217;s talks to do a search and advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), he did talk about his view of its new Bing search service (well done, but can it scale?&#8211;which is an engineer&#8217;s favorite schoolyard taunt).</p>
<p>He also addressed the bigger question of how Yahoo can stay relevant in the fast-changing Web 2.0 world.</p>
<p>To Balogh, copying trendsetters like Facebook is not the answer. For example, he noted that Yahoo is more a place where consumers do &#8220;one-way&#8221; follows of things important in their lives rather than wanting another social-network service (which Yahoo has tried and failed at, actually).</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to be another social network,&#8221; said Balogh flatly, agreeing that that boat has already long sailed without Yahoo on it with a significant product&#8211;Yahoo famously failed to buy Facebook, well before Balogh arrived in early 2008 from VeriSign (VRSN). &#8220;But we can be a place where people make and manage the important connections they have.&#8221;</p>
<p>How this will all play out is one of the most interesting questions in Silicon Valley because&#8211;even after all the turmoil&#8211;Yahoo remains one of the largest sites on the Web.</p>
<p>About 500 million monthly unique visitors enter its homepage and course through its vast site constantly, from its search pages to its massive email and instant-messaging services and its popular suite of content sites.</p>
<p>No one says Yahoo is not big&#8211;what everyone says is that it has missed many major and critical Internet trends as it has become mired in a management morass and external battles.</p>
<p>Now, with new leadership in place, observers are waiting to see what&#8217;s next.</p>
<p>In this regard, it is important what Balogh thinks since he is perhaps Yahoo&#8217;s only person who even closely resembles a Web product visionary now that former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang has stepped aside and Bartz has taken up command.</p>
<p>While he typically shies away from the spotlight, he is not bashful about talking about Yahoo&#8217;s infamous lugubrious development process. </p>
<p>&#8220;We have pockets of great technology that we have to really put back together into a coherent infrastructure,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;We have to get the basics right and focus on those core daily experiences that make Yahoo extraordinary.&#8221;</p>
<p>That is easier said than done, especially when changes impact so many consumers and, of course, the bottom line. Choosing what key trends to attack is harder for a large public company like Yahoo, which has a lot to protect in its current businesses.</p>
<p>&#8220;There will always be a battle between new ideas and monetization,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;The question is how much do you push that line back and forth?&#8221;</p>
<p>That fine line will surely be tested with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090214/how-is-yahoos-massive-metro-homepage-redesign-going-it-depends-on-who-you-ask">rollout of its new homepage</a> in the fall, a long project that has been codenamed &#8220;Metro.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not a radical departure, but we have given users more power to do what they want and also serve as the best of Web versus that is already inside of Yahoo,&#8221; said Balogh of the new homepage. &#8220;With technology, it is always a push-pull.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yes, more layoffs are indeed coming to Yahoo, sources confirmed to BoomTown, but perhaps even <em>more</em> than have been reported.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all, as even more top-level managers are either leaving or being moved around the ever-changing organizational structure at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>That includes a longtime top sales operations exec, Dan Foehner, who is about to start at Facebook next week, as well as others contemplating leaving, on their way out or are being reshuffled.</p>
<p>In other words, business as usual at the tumultuous company, whose nickname should be &#8220;Reorg.&#8221;</p>
<p>First, the layoffs, which the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/technology/companies/15yahoo.html?ref=technology">New York Times was first to report yesterday would be announced Tuesday</a> (side note to Damon&#8211;<em>this</em> is how you link to scoops) during Yahoo&#8217;s first-quarter earnings call and could impact several hundred employees.</p>
<p>The quarterly results are expected to be weak by most analysts, which is why more layoffs&#8211;which had been mentioned by the company as a possibility&#8211;are an obvious move.</p>
<p>But several internal sources said Yahoo staff is bracing for employee departures that might to be even higher, as many as 500 or more.</p>
<p>That could mean a complete lopping off or sale of various business units that Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has been evaluating since she arrived in January.</p>
<p>Why? Well, several employees said they were told the new round of cuts will not actually take place until June and that Yahoo HR is now preparing to follow the rules required by the <a href="http://www.doleta.gov/layoff/warn.cfm">Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.</a></p>
<p>Under the complex federal guidelines, Yahoo must provide a written WARN notice to affected employees &#8220;at least 60 calendar days in advance of covered plant closings and mass layoffs.&#8221; WARN notices are triggered for a variety of reasons, although a smaller number of layoffs across many units typically does not require it. </p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg" alt="no-jobs-signjpg" title="no-jobs-signjpg" width="214" height="217" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12286" /></a></p>
<p>A WARN notice is required, for example, when an employer shuts down a facility or operating unit within a single site of employment and lays off at least 50 full-time workers, as well as when an employer lays off 500 or more full-time workers at a single site of employment.</p>
<p>In its last two layoffs, Yahoo issued WARN notices and slashed about 2,500 jobs in total last year, leaving it with about 13,600 employees world-wide at the end of 2008.</p>
<p>But some of Yahoo managers are still leaving on their own.</p>
<p>Many top engineers, for example, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090327/microsoft-acquiring-yahoo-one-employee-at-a-time">have taken jobs of late at Microsoft</a> (MSFT) after the software giant installed a Yahoo tech star, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">Qi Lu</a>, as its top online exec. </p>
<p>And, BoomTown reported earlier, there have also been numerous departures of key staff recently, including: PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash</a>, Zimbra founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj</a> and soon, high-ranking techie <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/another-yahoo-to-go-venkat-panchapakesan-on-his-way-out">Venkat Panchapakesan</a>.</p>
<p>And more still, it seems.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s VP of Sales Operations Foehner, for example, is headed out after a long stint at the company and is going to Facebook, said several sources inside and outside the company.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://twitter.com/foehner">Foehner&#8217;s Twitter</a> page, he tweets about a new unnamed job, as well as an athletic endeavor (Foehner is a dedicated triathlete): &#8220;back in pleasanton. starting bike adventure on thurs. start new gig on monday. 9 weeks til CdA!&#8221;</p>
<p>There is also a lot more movement inside Yahoo, as the reorganization done by Bartz in February shakes out.</p>
<p>Typical of this is Mike Walrath, the high-profile former CEO of Right Media, an online ad exchange snapped up by Yahoo for $720 million in 2007, who is now an advertising-focused SVP at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Now Walrath is moving out from under the purview of Yahoo North America EVP Hilary Schneider and will report to Ari Balogh, EVP of Products and CTO, as all search products seem to be rolling up through his organization. (Both Balogh and Schneider are pictured here.)</p>
<p>While there are other key execs at Yahoo&#8211;see <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/management.cfm">this drastically downsized Yahoo management page</a>, which used to be a <em>lot</em> longer&#8211;Balogh and Schneider have roughly split the company into two parts, product and engineering for Balogh and the bulk of the content and advertising businesses under Schneider.  </p>
<p>Bartz is at the top, of course, and moving parts is not a complete surprise, said one exec, as she gets more control of the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;The last reorg was a blunt instrument, so now she is starting to surgically move people around or even out, after seeing what staff can and can&#8217;t do and what fat there still is,&#8221; said one exec close to the situation.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no small comfort to Yahoo&#8217;s reorg-and-layoff-weary staff, especially at its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>When Bartz <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/one-last-yahoo-reorg-missive-bartz-tells-employees-what-she-already-said-again/">announced her big reorganization in late February</a>, she declared a moratorium to the endless reorganizations that had plagued the company&#8217;s troops for far too many years.</p>
<p>Wrote Bartz in an email to Yahoo employees about her new management lineup:</p>
<p>&#8220;I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps the core is still solid, but a lot is still quite undefined at Yahoo, as it seeks to right its shaky fortunes.</p>

<p>Sources said the changes are part of a simplifying of the division, one of three at AOL (the others are communications and content).</p>

<p>Dear Platform-A colleagues,</p>
<p>At our last All Hands meeting we discussed the need to move quickly to position Platform-A to grow revenues and gain share in today’s tough market. We talked about how we are putting together a plan of action that we can implement quickly, and how we need to move aggressively to better align our sales force, and get more people on the street selling.</p>
<p>Today, we’re announcing the first steps we’re taking to implement this plan.</p>
<p>First, I’m pleased to announce that we’ve named Chris Maccaro VP New York, where he will lead an expanded regional sales team in our largest market. Chris has worked in a variety of roles in his six years at AOL, most recently as VP Property Sales. Prior to that, he was a Regional Sales Director in New York. Chris will be announcing his leadership team and sales structure over the next few weeks. The New York, Boston and Mid-Atlantic offices will report into Mark Ellis on an interim basis. Also, our Toronto office will now report into Rick Simmons and become part of the Midwest Region.</p>
<p>As a part of this realignment, Brent Spitzer will be leaving the company. Brent has made many tremendous contributions to our organization over the past nine years. Please join me in thanking him for everything he’s done for Platform-A and wishing him all the best on his next endeavor.</p>
<p>Next, we will be disbanding of the Property and Category sales teams and realigning many of the talented individuals from those teams into regional sales and other parts of the organization. Both teams were instrumental in providing vertical focus and sales pressure over the past year, but there is a more urgent need now to drive direct advertiser demand and relationships. Our Homepage and Multicultural teams will remain intact and will report to Ron Bernstein. </p>
<p>The Product Sales team will continue to report to Julie Greenhouse but will move under Don Kennedy, as will Ben Trenda who runs Agency Partnerships and Global Alliances. Don will also create a small team of sales specialists who will focus exclusively on driving network revenue through the regional sales teams. Don will be working to build his team and will announce details of his organization in the next few weeks.</p>
<p>We all recognize the need to drive world class customer solutions more effectively and efficiently. To that end, we are creating a new Marketing Solutions organization, which will combine the current Strategy, Marketing and Property Sales Development teams. This new organization will focus on the needs of sales and the customer, and will harness the assets of MediaGlow, the Advertising.com network and our other best-of-breed products. We’re beginning a search for a strong leader to run the Marketing Solutions organization. We are also beginning a search for a highly credentialed Research Director to support sales. In the interim, Doug Boccia, Aleck Schleider and Blake Pierson will report to Mark Ellis. Anne Hunter and her ADlytics team will now report into Peter Ban and the Business Intelligence organization.</p>
<p>We are not planning any near-term structural changes in our Account Management organization. This team is critical to our success in scaling revenue, and it has risen to the occasion throughout the integration of Platform-A and our migration to ADTECH.</p>
<p>I realize that these are widespread changes, but they are necessary for us to succeed. There will be a transition period of several weeks where we will provide more structural clarity and displaced individuals will be able to interview for open positions. </p>
<p>I can’t tell you how encouraged and excited I am about the progress we are making and what we’re going to accomplish at Platform-A. These changes are the first steps in moving forward to build a world-class sales organization. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s pretty much what BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/">has been reporting all week</a> about the reorg. </p>

<p>Unmentioned, but Audience Products head Ash Patel is still in. So is General Counsel Michael Callahan. </p>
<p>New chief marketing officer is Elisa Steele, who come from NetApps (NTAP). Bartz happens to be on the board of NetApps, by the way.</p>
<p>New International head TBD.</p>
<p>Bartz also sent an email to employees about the changes.</p>

<p>February 26, 2009</p>
<p>·         Our goal as a company is simple:  to consistently deliver awesome consumer and advertiser experiences everywhere in the world we do business. So we’re creating an organization to enable improvements in our product quality and operational efficiency, as well as clear decision making and accountability. </p>
<p>·         Tech and Product groups will be combined to create a single organization called Products. Products will be led by Ari Balogh as EVP of Products and CTO, reporting to Carol Bartz, with the goal of enabling extraordinary consumer experiences tied to compelling advertiser and publisher offerings. This organization is responsible for the vision, strategy, and quality of every product we create&#8211;regardless of region, device format or category.</p>
<p>·         There are now two regions&#8211;North America and International. The regions are responsible for delivering Yahoo!’s products, programming and services to consumers, partners and advertisers in local markets. North America will be led by Hilary Schneider, EVP, North American Region, reporting to Carol Bartz. International’s leader will be hired soon. </p>
<p>.         Mobile will continue to be a key priority for Yahoo!.  Going forward, David Ko will lead the mobile business, strategy and monetization teams for Yahoo! (Head of Global Mobile Business, reporting to Hilary Schneider). All of our product teams will be responsible for incorporating mobile innovations into their products.</p>
<p>·         A Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) role has been created to oversee our global marketing strategy and provide direction for our marketing function. Today, we named our new CMO, Elisa Steele.  Elisa starts on March 23.  She will bring together the various marketing teams that have been spread across the company. </p>
<p>·         A new Customer Advocacy group will help us to better hear the voice of the customer (consumers/advertisers) across the company and incorporate what we hear into all our work throughout Yahoo!. We will hire a new leader for this team. </p>
<p>·         The newly created Service Engineering &#038; Operations (SE&#038;O) team will be chartered with delivering common technology services at scale, including application management and infrastructure.  The team will be led by David Dibble, SVP of SE&#038;O. We’re bringing Service Engineering together as one group because these engineers bring expertise that is best applied horizontally.</p>
<p>·         Our corporate functions will consist of HR led by David Windley, Legal led by Michael Callahan, and our CFO is to be hired, with Blake Jorgensen remaining through the transition.  Joel Jones will serve as Carol Bartz’s chief of staff.</p>
<p>·         This structure is designed to last two to four years; however, we’ll continue to make adjustments as needed.  But we expect this core structure will stay in place.</p>

<p>&#8220;Openness and transparency is not just an end state,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a process.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>11:17 am:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be as clear as possible that we do not own user data,&#8221; said Zuckerberg. &#8220;We feel really bad about that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Us too! </p>
<p><strong>11:21 am:</strong></p>
<p>I get to ask the first question, which is about how this whole mess happened.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg said Facebook had made previous changes all the time to its Terms of Service to complex legal documents. This time, in trying to make them simpler, &#8220;we made a few mistakes,&#8221; which in turn set off a firestorm.</p>
<p>Ah, the mistakes-were-made defense!</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of the feedback was fair,&#8221; acknowledged Zuckerberg, who then talked about the new notification and feedback and comments options, so it will not happen ever again. Except next month. </p>
<p>Also, there will be a vote. Well, only on some issues that get people all hot and bothered, presumably. But who decides what gets voted on and who wins the vote?</p>
<p>Unclear. But vote early and often.</p>
<p>But, said Schrage: &#8220;We underestimated the sense of ownership&#8221; that Facebook users have for the service.</p>
<p><strong>11:25 am:</strong></p>
<p>A question about whether or not Facebook should have known better after its Beacon advertising debacle.</p>

<p>Another shouldn&#8217;t-you-have-known-better related question, referring back to the News Feed debacle of 2007. That was before the Beacon debacle of 2008. Which was before the ToS debacle of 2009. (Is anyone noticing a pattern here?)</p>

<p>A month and a half in the saddle and today I have the perfect excuse to get blogging.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been on a whirlwind tour for the last six weeks, talking with everybody from executive leaders to the guys who configured my laptop. I&#8217;ve been in student mode, slowly getting smarter about what makes this place tick. And most recently, I&#8217;ve been gathering information on what it&#8217;s going to take to get Yahoo! to a great place as an organization&#8211;and one that brings you killer products.</p>
<p>People here have impressed the hell out of me. They&#8217;re smart, dedicated, passionate, driven, and really nice. There&#8217;s so much great energy and frankly lots of optimism. But there&#8217;s also plenty that has bogged this company down. For starters, you&#8217;d be amazed at how complicated some things are here.</p>
<p>So today I&#8217;m rolling out a new management structure that I believe will make Yahoo! a lot faster on its feet. For us working at Yahoo!, it means everything gets simpler. We&#8217;ll be able to make speedier decisions, the notorious silos are gone, and we have a renewed focus on the customer. For you using Yahoo! every day, it will better enable us to deliver products that make you say, “Wow.”</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve noticed that a lot of us on the inside don&#8217;t spend enough time looking to the outside. That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m creating a new Customer Advocacy group. After getting a lot of angry calls at my office from frustrated customers, I realized we could do a better job of listening to and supporting you. Our Customer Care team does an incredible job with the amazing number of people who come to them, but they need better resources. So we&#8217;re investing in that. After all, you deserve the very best.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re also leaning on this team to make sure we&#8217;re all hearing the voice of our customers (consumers and advertisers). I&#8217;m singularly focused on providing you with awesome products. Period. The kind that get you so excited, you have to tell someone about them. Whether on your desktop, your mobile device, or even your TV.</p>
<p>And that takes a real understanding of what you want/need/love/hate, how you&#8217;re using our products, and what you find simple, intuitive, easy and fun. Who wants innovation for innovation&#8217;s sake if it doesn&#8217;t make your life easier, more efficient, more productive? So expect us to hear you better and take better care of you.</p>
<p>Finally, a note about our brand. It&#8217;s one of our biggest assets. Mention Yahoo! practically anywhere in the world, and people yodel. But in the past few years, we haven&#8217;t been as clear in showing the world what the Yahoo! brand stands for. We&#8217;re going to change that. Look for this company&#8217;s brand to kick ass again.</p>
<p>Big thanks to the many of you who&#8217;ve reached out with positive comments. It&#8217;s clear people want Yahoo! to succeed. I&#8217;ll try to pop by here again soon, though probably not too soon. I have a pretty long to-do list.</p>

<p>Several sources inside and outside Yahoo told BoomTown that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz could be ready to announce a major reorganization of its management structure as early as next week, most likely on Wednesday.</p>
<p>While that shift could be pushed out a week or two or rolled out in pieces, Yahoo (YHOO) execs are nervously awaiting the moves by Bartz to put a new regime in place in order to more easily power through a massive reset of the troubled company.</p>
<p>Interestingly, many top execs are very much in the dark about what Bartz will do since she manages very close to the vest, mostly moving around Yahoo with only her longtime executive assistant in tow.</p>
<p>Thankfully, she also loves to write detailed memos to the staff, and she signaled the &#8220;big week&#8221; ahead in one Boomtown just obtained <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">(see here)</a> that was sent out today.</p>
<p>Those are code words for reorg, according to many sources I spoke to, coming after Bartz has spent a lot of time visiting many parts of Yahoo and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090210/bartz-holds-first-exec-offsite-as-the-yahoos-turn-and-twist-in-the-wind/">conducting a whirlwind of meetings with execs</a>.</p>

<p>I will be posting my Heidi-Klum-you&#8217;re-in-and-out predictions of the fate of various execs later this weekend.</p>
<p>But broadly, most expect Bartz to severely roll back a variety of previous reorganizations done by former CEO Jerry Yang and former President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>That will mean many top execs will likely be quite out&#8211;already, Decker&#8217;s chief of staff, Jeff McCombs, has quietly departed the company, several sources said&#8211;while others will be elevated.</p>
<p>Most sources I spoke to who have interfaced with Bartz think she will likely go with a more traditional and more accountable structure like the one she employed while rehauling Autodesk (ADSK), the computer-aided design software company she once headed, rather than the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090209/will-tough-talking-bartz-reorg-yahoo-soon-and-finally-blue-pill-the-matrix/">matrix-tangled Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>A change in how Yahoo makes media, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">I wrote about today</a> and was approved by Bartz, is a classic globally-centered development organization. (By the way, a significant reorg of the media organization, headed by Jeff Dossett, is also set for next week, said sources.)</p>
<p>Thus, most expect Bartz to do a C-level-style set-up, with execs like a COO, CTO and a new, more powerful CMO (who will also head PR), all reporting to her. </p>

<p>Whatever happens, it&#8217;s clear that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Carol">&#8220;Hurricane Carol&#8221;</a>&#8211;a nickname she has been given by some employees in admiration&#8211;is getting ready to blow right through Yahoo.</p>

<p><em>YAHOO! ANNOUNCES REALIGNMENT TO SUPPORT CORE STRATEGIES</p>
<p>Centralizes Audience Product Development; Forms New U.S. Region;</p>
<p>Realigns Technology Organization</p>
<p>SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 26, 2008&#8211;Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today announced changes to its organization aimed at improving its products, technologies and execution. The moves support its strategy to be the starting point for the most users, the must-buy for the most advertisers and the platform of choice for developers.</p>
<p>Key elements Yahoo! announced are the centralization of consumer product development to enhance the company&#8217;s ability to release products worldwide; the creation of a U.S. region focused on bringing products to market for users, advertisers and publishers; formation of an insights strategy team; and enhancements to the technology infrastructure to optimize the use of data and improve coordination between product and engineering teams.</p>
<p>&#8220;These moves accelerate the ability of our deep and talented team to build great products, grow our audiences and improve monetization globally,&#8221; said Jerry Yang, CEO. &#8220;They are designed to put us in an even better position to leverage our leading global audience and capture the opportunity we see in the convergence of search and display advertising.&#8221;</em></p>

<p><em>Business and Product Changes</p>
<p>The company is creating three new teams that will report to President Sue Decker. An Audience Products Division will assume responsibility for companywide product strategy and product management. It will be led by Ash Patel who previously managed the company&#8217;s Platforms &#038; Infrastructure group. A U.S. region with accountability for all go-to-market activity in the U.S. will be led by Hilary Schneider, who previously headed the company&#8217;s Global Partner Solutions group. Finally, an Insights Strategy team will assume responsibility for centralizing and executing a common strategy for the use of data and analysis across Yahoo!. The company plans to name this group&#8217;s leader within the next few weeks.</p>
<p>&#8220;The changes we&#8217;re making today will help deliver superior global products for users and enable faster and better decision-making,&#8221; said President Sue Decker. &#8220;This is a logical next step in light of our success last year in moving to a more centralized approach to developing world-class marketing products. We have planned these changes deliberately over the past several months to clarify responsibilities and to capitalize on the scale advantages while allowing for fine tuning to meet local market needs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Technology and Infrastructure Changes</p>
<p>Yahoo! is making changes to its technology organization, led by Chief Technology Officer Ari Balogh, to better position the company to execute on its strategic priorities. Principal changes are developing a world-class cloud computing and storage infrastructure; rewiring Yahoo! onto common platforms; and creating a stronger partnership between product and engineering teams.</p>
<p>&#8220;Since my arrival at Yahoo! earlier this year, we&#8217;ve carefully evaluated the best possible configuration of our technology group to support our business strategies,&#8221; said Balogh. &#8220;I&#8217;m excited by the depth of our team which—combined with the talent we continue to recruit—will execute even better under this new structure.&#8221;</p>
<p>In order to expand its cloud computing capabilities, the Company will form a Cloud Computing &#038; Data Infrastructure Group, charged with developing a computing infrastructure that balances scalability with cost effectiveness. It will move all consumer-facing platform teams to the Audience Technology Group, led by Venkat Panchapakesan. In addition, it is putting new leadership in place behind Yahoo!&#8217;s search group, naming Prabhakar Raghavan to direct search strategy and Tuoc Luong as the interim leader of the search product team. Both Prabhakar and Tuoc will also continue in their roles as the leaders of Yahoo! Research and Search Engineering respectively. In addition, David Ku will lead the Advertising Technology Group within Search.</p>
<p>Yahoo!&#8217;s Marketing Products Division, Connected Life and Corporate Marketing groups will continue to operate as they do today.</em></p>

<p>Sources said a more substantial public announcement has been pushed by Yahoo&#8217;s board&#8211;apparently, an internal email to employees was considered too&#8211;to show Yahoo&#8217;s new team and that the company still has a strong bench, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">despite a lot of exec departures of late</a>.</p>
<p>As we already wrote, the structure will pivot on several key execs, reporting to President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division Ash Patel as head of a new Audience Products group (its name was changed from Global Products); Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider as the head of a new U.S unit; various folks running around the rest of the globe.</p>
<p>There will also be another strategy team group with a new head, who has not yet been chosen.</p>

<p>And Yahoo will name Scott Dietzen (pictured, right) to take over part of the job of SVP Brad Garlinghouse, who running was running all communications properties and products. Dietzen will get the communications portfolio, which includes email and messaging, all under Patel.</p>
<p>(Community properties like Flickr will actually move under Front Door Head Tapan Bhat, who also reports to Patel.)</p>
<p>Dietzen was the president and CTO of Zimbra (and before that CTO of BEA Systems), the highly innovative open-source email startup Yahoo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">bought last fall for $350 million</a>. </p>

<p>Garlinghouse (pictured, left), as we reported last night, will not be officially leaving until the end of the summer, though. He is currently traveling in Asia, sources said, and has not yet decided on a new gig. </p>
<p>He is, of course, the man who wrote<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/is-yahoos-peanut-butter-man-toast/"> the infamous &#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221; </a>which first revealed deep tension within Yahoo. </p>
<p>Yahoo is likely to also announce changes in the engineering organization under CTO Ari Balogh, who is also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080418/open-season-at-yahoo/">orchestrating some massive and much-needed changes</a> in the arena at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Last week, I outlined the sweeping internal changes at Yahoo (YHOO), which will again dramatically change the structure of management.</p>

<p>As we wrote, the new Global Products group will be headed by Patel (pictured here), who is currently EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking. </p>
<p>All these products are considered &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products, including divisions run by communications and communities SVP Brad Garlinghouse, former Search SVP Vish Makhijani and Front Door head Tapan Bhat.</p>
<p>While Makhijnai is leaving, Bhat is staying so far and Garlinghouse&#8211;despite previous reports of his imminent departure&#8211;will likely stay on through the summer.</p>
<p>Sources said the prospect of working for Patel is not a welcome one for some Yahoo execs in the old Network division.</p>
<p>Patel has been at Yahoo since 1996, and some do not think his operational style is dynamic enough and claim his division has had problems shipping products.</p>

<p>In the new organization, Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider (pictured here) will get purview over the entire U.S. region.</p>
<p>Schneider will continue to oversee all ad sales and add on the Yahoo Media Group under Scott Moore, who was Weiner&#8217;s other direct report.</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>The rest of the world will be split up between three other regions: Europe, headed by Toby Coppel; Asia, run by Rose Tsou; and emerging markets, headed by Keith Nilsson.</p>
<p>Patel, Schneider and the others all report to Yahoo President Sue Decker. </p>

<p>The reorg was largely run by Decker (pictured here) and top HR execs. Yang was involved but not very visible in the process to top managers.</p>
<p>And all of this reorg might be moot anyway.</p>
<p>Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn is still pursuing his proxy fight to remove Yahoo&#8217;s board and management, which could come to a head at Yahoo&#8217;s annual meeting on Aug. 1.</p>
<p>And investors are pressing Microsoft (MSFT) to make another proposal to run Yahoo&#8217;s search ad and search businesses, which could include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080625/could-microsoft-get-control-of-yahoo-without-buying-it-investors-think-so/">the software giant buying a significant stake in Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>While some think Yang will soon hand over the CEO reins to Decker, increasing numbers of insiders and outside investors are pushing for new management at the top, as Yahoo&#8217;s shares decline and more and more talent takes flight from the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;A fish stinks from the head,&#8221; joked one employee. &#8220;This reorg is change, but what we might need goes higher than this.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s Jerry here? He is like a ghost,&#8221; said a Yahoo (YHOO) exec to me last week.</p>
<p>The exec was referring to the plans for a major overhaul of the management structure of the troubled Internet company&#8211;the dreaded and inevitable <em>reorg</em> that <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/heres-the-detailed-details-of-the-new-yahoo-reorg/">BoomTown wrote about in detail last week</a> that is expected to be announced this week. </p>
<p>Many execs have told BoomTown that Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang has been strangely absent from the communications around the reorg, which has been driven largely by President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>Well, ghosts aren&#8217;t real, but fear and uncertainty clearly are at Yahoo these days.</p>
<p>Thus, as Yahoo gears up for its annual meeting on Aug. 1, where it faces a proxy battle with billionaire Carl Icahn (whose billowing sails have been much trimmed by the huge drop in Yahoo&#8217;s stock price recently), here&#8217;s a certainty: Yet another bumpy week for Yahoo, its employees and shareholders.</p>
<p>Last week, BoomTown outlined the changes that Yahoo is likely to announce this week, part of a massive management overhaul that has spurred the departures of top execs and focused much attention on how Yahoo is going to be organized by its leadership for its many challenges going forward.</p>
<p>That is, of course, if that leadership does go forward.</p>
<p>This is not to say that either Yang or Decker is under any particular pressure to go, despite all the turmoil with the Internet giant and also from external forces.</p>
<p>In fact, I think Decker will soon get the CEO job outright. </p>
<p>As I wrote in my post last week of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080617/boomtowns-short-list-of-yahoo-ceos-sorry-jerry-but-fortune-favors-the-prepared/">other possible CEO alternatives for Yahoo</a> (and I stand by my pick of Mark Cuban, my friends!):</p>
<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s the obvious question, of course, to ask whether the co-founder of Yahoo has what it takes to manage the company through what will doubtlessly be a very difficult year. &#8230; As Yahoo continues to be in limbo, pressure is sure to mount heavily on Yang, and it is not a stretch to imagine he will not remain in the top job at the troubled company for the long term.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>It is even easier to imagine after the last week, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">saw much upheaval in the exec ranks</a>, with several top managers headed out the door and others clearly considering scaling the perimeter fence. </p>

<p>There&#8217;s lots of reasons for that, including the form of the expected reorg that might put power&#8211;besides with Yang and Decker&#8211;into the hands of two key execs: Hilary Schneider and Ash Patel (both pictured here).</p>
<p>Patel, the longtime Yahoo exec who is currently EVP of its Platforms and Infrastructure division, is expected to lead a new Global Products group&#8211;made up of &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products. </p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking. </p>
<p>And Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider is apparently to be placed over the entire U.S. region. Schneider keeps all of ad sales, but gets the Yahoo Media Group (which was also in the Network division).</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>How closely Decker will hew to this setup, which was proposed internally over the last two weeks with little input from most managers, will be interesting to see.</p>
<p>Obviously, plans could change given the tepid reaction internally to it.</p>
<p>Most interesting to me is how involved Yang will be in the proceedings. Because, despite all the disappointment, the iconic Internet figure does still have a significant place in the hearts of his Yahoo troops. </p>
<p>But, even that has its limits and Yang is in more and more danger of truly losing those hearts and minds, especially if the company does not stop feeling like it is lurching from one drama to the next and very, very soon. </p>
<p>Said one former Yahoo who has been in touch with many still there and who still very much cares for the company (as most who have left truly do) about what the mood among current Yahoo employees is, in a common sentiment I hear often these days:</p>
<p>&#8220;They expressed frustration with the endless reorganizations and unclear future of the company. Also said that morale is really low and people feel like they aren&#8217;t seeing true leadership from the [senior] exec team.</p>
<p>&#8220;I definitely sense less sensitivity for Jerry in the conversations I have with people who are still with the company. Six months ago, whenever I mentioned that I feel sorry for Jerry (because I do) given everything going on, most people would nod or say, &#8216;me too.&#8217; Now, the reaction is usually a groan or rolling eyes.&#8221;</p>
