<p>A gauntlet of wildly cheering sales people dressed in brightly colored T-shirts, a sleek, white store, a simple but deceptively elegant design.</p>
<p>You will be excused for thinking this video below is from an Apple (AAPL) store. But, it is actually from the opening of a Microsoft (MSFT) Store in Scottsdale, Ariz., today.</p>
<p>It was the first retail outlet for the software giant to open, which will sell all kinds of hardware and software, with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090807/from-the-department-of-i-can-hardly-wait-a-sneak-peek-of-the-new-microsoft-store/">another debuting in Mission Viejo, Calif.</a>, next week.</p>
<p>It reminds me my favorite television show opening ditty: </p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s last foray into the retail space&#8211;a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090213/department-of-deja-vu-last-microsoft-retail-store-foray-was-a-bust">store called microsoftSF</a> in San Francisco&#8211;was a failure and closed after two years in 2001, but this looks promising at least.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the video&#8211;done by someone who has clearly studied BoomTown&#8217;s shaky style carefully&#8211;which is on the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/microsoftstore">Microsoft Store&#8217;s channel</a> on Google (GOOG) video site YouTube.</p>
<p>Below it is a similar-looking video from the opening of an Apple store in Boston, Mass. last year (plus the genius opening of &#8220;The Patty Duke Show&#8221;):</p>

<p>For the past few months, the Huffington Post has been on a bit of a tear&#8211;both in terms of traffic gains and in its hiring of some big talent for key positions.</p>
<p>Now, those execs are focusing on using that consumer momentum to achieve what has eluded the Huffington Post thus far: Making some serious bank from the privately held news and media site.</p>
<p>How to help marketers to better understand the site and, therefore, spur this significant monetization will be his main focus at the Huffington Post, said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090916/former-yahoo-and-aol-ad-exec-coleman-poised-to-join-the-huffington-post-as-president/">Greg Coleman</a> to BoomTown in an interview over the weekend. </p>
<p>Coleman&#8211;a former Yahoo (YHOO) advertising exec, as well as one for Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL&#8211;was named president and chief revenue officer a month ago by Huffington Post&#8217;s new CEO, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090615/boomtown-interviews-arianna-ken-and-eric-about-huffington-post-exec-changes-bam/">Eric Hippeau</a>.</p>
<p>Hippeau, who was himself just appointed in June, is another well-known online media exec and has been a big investor and board member of the Huffington Post. (You can read a thorough <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-huffpo-ceo-eric-hippeau-we-are-now-in-the-big-leagues/">interview by Staci Kramer with Hippeau</a> on paidContent.)</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for advertisers to know how big we have gotten, while also highlighting this amazing audience of influencers we have gathered,&#8221; said Coleman, in his first media chitchat since taking on the job. &#8220;I think it is the beginning of a tipping point.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, of course, Coleman <em>would</em> say that, as the guy looking to drum up interest among marketers in spending their money on the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>But stats seem to indicate that consumers are increasingly liking what the Huffington Post is creating, because it is starting to surpass some well-known media icons on the Web in traffic.</p>
<p>While more of this increase is going to be due to a socialization of the news&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090816/huffington-post-and-facebook-go-social-with-connect-on-steroids">Huffington Post has an aggressive deployment of Facebook Connect called HuffPost Social News</a>&#8211;the growth is more about building a brand people trust and seek out.</p>
<p>According to recent reports from both comScore (SCOR) and Nielsen Online, for example, the site just became larger than several online brands of big media companies, such as the Washington Post (WPO), in terms of unique monthly visitors. </p>
<p>In its September report, Nielsen clocked the Huffington Post at 9.47 million uniques, up 26 percent, while the Post site was at 9.2 million&#8211;a drop of 30 percent.</p>
<p>According to the Nielsen, the Huffington Post is within spitting distance of USA Today&#8217;s Web site (9.9 million), a Gannett (GCI) property.</p>
<p>And, it is bigger than Hearst Newspapers Digital (7.9 million) and the BBC (7.2 million).</p>
<p>For September, comScore has the Huffington Post (at 6.83 million) besting the Post (6.77 million)&#8211;as well as WSJ.com (6.7 million), a unit of Dow Jones, which is owned by News Corp. (NWS).</p>
<p>(The Wall Street Journal site, to be fair, makes a chunk of its revenue from subscription fees, rather than relying solely on advertising from traffic like the Huffington Post. And full disclosure: Dow Jones owns this site.)</p>
<p>In any case, big traffic is key for most news sites, and internal numbers from Google (GOOG) Analytics that Huffington Post execs cite are higher, as is typical for most sites, pegging traffic at about 27 million monthly uniques with more than two million reader comments per month. </p>
<p>Huffington Post co-founder and blogging icon Arianna Huffington attributes the recent boost in traffic to the site&#8217;s proclivity to &#8220;start conversations&#8221; that interest readers, such as her recent suggestion that Vice President Joe Biden should resign.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are aiming to go beyond just facts, to create a narrative,&#8221; said Huffington, who thinks the speed of news helps attract visitors to the site. &#8220;We think bringing journalism to a new level is exactly what people are looking for.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps. But, even if traffic increases continue to bear her theories out, she and others have said that the Huffington Post still has not been regularly profitable despite doubling annual revenue&#8211;mostly in advertising&#8211;to what some estimate to be about $8 million in 2009.</p>
<p>While the site is aiming to invest rather than focus too hard on showing profits, Coleman said he would like to make revenue seven times larger in the next years, building on the performance of the site to vaunt past old media giants online.</p>
<p>&#8220;This kind of thing is a milestone for the marketing community,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Our goal is to be the top Internet newspaper, and this points out that we are on our way.&#8221;</p>
<p>To do that, he will have to spend some of the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081201/huffington-post-nabs-25-million-in-funding-heres-an-exclusive-boomtown-interview-with-oak-investments-fred-harman">$37 million in funding</a> that the Huffington Post has raised from venture investors.</p>
<p>While the edit side is using the money to expand the number of news categories, Coleman said his focus will be on building a higher caliber team of sales and marketing execs with deeper relationships to big clients. </p>
<p>&#8220;Unlike selling an auto page on Yahoo (YHOO), our site has a more complex sales process that takes some time for people to understand,&#8221; said Coleman. &#8220;But once they get it, it should be an easier sale.&#8221;</p>

<p>The beleaguered social networking site has been in the midst of an effort to reinvigorate its image, spur innovation in its product and&#8211;most of all&#8211;pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival Facebook has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own&#8221;&#8211;namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>On the agenda, aptly enough, for the 150 ad sales employees, who will gather at Terranea in Palos Verdes, is Ben Sherwood, author of &#8220;The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science That Could Save Your Life,&#8221; and founder of a <a href="http://www.thesurvivorsclub.org">Web site of the same name</a> that describes itself as &#8220;the place for surviving and thriving.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also coming to the meeting will be several bands that have successfully leveraged MySpace as a platform, to talk about their experiences and to play for the crowd.</p>
<p>And, perhaps most importantly, the group might also get to meet its new boss by then, as several sources close to the situation said that MySpace has settled on an exec to fill the key job of running its ad business. </p>
<p>While it is unclear if the deal is completely done, sources said MySpace management will announce the pick this week.</p>
<p>Sources added that MySpace has been particularly interested in one exec from Viacom (VIA) and another from Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>While the sources would not name the Viacom exec, several pointed to Keith Lorizio, Microsoft VP of U.S. sales, as someone MySpace has been targeting.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of a wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under co-founder and former CEO Chris DeWolfe by new CEO Owen Van Natta.</p>

<p>Van Natta, along with COO Michael Jones and Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn, have been squirreled away since late April, working at cleaning up the company by replacing management, restructuring its various units and cutting costs, including <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next">massive layoffs</a>.</p>
<p>They have also been trying to come up with a plan to differentiate MySpace from Facebook, a good strategy since it is now well-nigh impossible for the Beverly Hills-based MySpace to catch up with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook&#8217;s galloping growth.</p>
<p>While the whole new offering will not be rolled out prominently until at least the first quarter of next year, said several sources, some changes will begin sooner, including a gradual redesign of the site.</p>
<p>Under the new plan, said several sources, the main idea will be to shift the focus to engagement over sheer audience numbers. While MySpace is still huge, with about 70 million monthly U.S. visitors, increasing how much time they spend on the site is the goal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not like numbers are not important, but the better metric for MySpace will be how involved users are,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;MySpace needs to win on minutes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, rather than the wider and more scattershot approach of past years, the new direction being stressed is more scalable and focused.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not about getting everyone and their mothers on MySpace,&#8221; said a source, &#8220;but about being a better site to those here.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include  stressing &#8220;ownership&#8221; of online categories, which for MySpace are music and entertainment, with the hope that advertisers will be attracted to more engaged users.</p>
<p>Unlike Facebook, which is often described as a utility platform for communications between friends, sources said MySpace will be aimed more at being a platform for communities of interest.</p>
<p>That includes using tools from other companies, such as MySpace&#8217;s recent two-way synch with Twitter, the hot microblogging service, to link those communities. </p>
<p>Presumably, the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/sale-of-ilike-to-myspace-135-million-in-cash-6-million-for-talent-retention-delayed-over-tax-issues-reallyplus-the-list-of-other-suitors">August purchase of iLike</a>, the social music start-up, is also part of that plan.</p>
<p>&#8220;Instead of the ability to just connect friend to friend in a single social graph, this will be about connecting a person to their communities of passion and interest and to others like them anywhere,&#8221; said one source. </p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>

<p>&#8220;MySpace should represent pop culture online to customers and advertisers,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The core strength has always been music and that is where the site will really excel, because it binds customers to the service.&#8221;</p>
<p>The even heavier music focus on the main juggernaut site, noted several sources, does create an odd situation with MySpace Music, the separate joint venture the site has with music labels to create a massive music community. </p>
<p>While sources do not think News Corp. will attempt to suck MySpace Music back into the main site, due to the complex partnership issues, the idea is to make them even more deeply integrated and to sell them to advertisers as one powerful marketing message.</p>
<p>In any case, several sources noted that one of the most successful parts of the new plan has been to convince News Corp. leaders that MySpace does not have to beat Facebook to be successful.</p>
<p>Sooner than later, of course, MySpace has to do just that.</p>
<p>Will it work? Who knows, but said one source close to the situation quite correctly:</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no silver bullet for MySpace&#8211;it just has to climb back step by step.&#8221;</p>

<p>Say it ain&#8217;t so.</p>
<p>Having fully embraced the Internet&#8211;sometimes to much disdain from old media colleagues back in the day&#8211;since the early 1990s as the way of the future in publishing, and even going to far as to abandon a career in print forever some years ago, BoomTown is bereft at the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091005/here-are-the-conde-cuts-modern-bride-elegant-bride-gourmet-cookie-closed/">news yesterday that Gourmet magazine was being shish-kababbed</a>.</p>
<p>Gourmet has been, since I started reading it as a young girl, one of the more perfect magazines&#8211;full of glamorous travel locales, stunning photos of food and sumptuous prose, all beautifully edited.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s all agree first to blame owner Condé Nast, the famed magazine unit of privately held Advance Publications, for deciding to shutter the elegant and iconic Gourmet&#8211;which has been around since 1941&#8211;after the November issue.</p>
<p>While circulation remained steady at Gourmet at just under one million monthly paying subscribers, Condé Nast Chief Executive Officer Chuck Townsend pointed to a fall-off in advertising spending by luxury brands that resulted in a money-losing mess.</p>
<p>But, in a follow-up piece in The Wall Street Journal, titled <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125478578537966053.html">&#8220;Gourmet Magazine&#8217;s Demise Gives Readers Empty Feeling,&#8221;</a> plunging newsstand sales were also noted, apparently due in part to the impact of the Web.</p>
<p>&#8220;Gourmet has had to compete with food-related Web sites, which are often free and contain up-to-the-minute content,&#8221; said the Journal article.</p>
<p>In other words, the same thing that is occurring in <em>all arenas</em>&#8211;from food to tech to fashion to news&#8211;was left unsaid.</p>
<p>As in: The scourge of the Internet, laying waste to all those it comes in contact with.</p>
<p>But I dearly hope that this episode with Gourmet does not become another one of those death-by-digital cautionary tales, a case study that no one can sustain this kind of highbrow, expensive-to-make print media anymore, even the free-spending types at Condé Nast.</p>
<p>I am not sure that&#8217;s exactly true, though, since the analog experience Gourmet provided was not the same as what&#8217;s on the Web, which is what probably kept its circulation steady over the years. </p>
<p>It was clearly an issue of the econalypse&#8211;obviously helped along by the fact that people&#8217;s reading habits are shifting to online, thought that&#8217;s not the root issue.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why Townsend added that Gourmet might live on in books, on television and, most likely of all, on the Internet.</p>
<p>That Gourmet already has a dullish Web site was not mentioned since it is free and not particularly different from the magazine&#8211;a decent repurposing, but a repurposing nonetheless.</p>
<p>Now that there is no magazine to fill that Web void, it will be interesting to see if more could be done online with the iconic foodie brand.</p>
<p>Or not.</p>
<p>(That September cover picture above is a quince, by the way, which most would never really know without&#8211;um, er&#8211;the help of Gourmet.)</p>

<p>In the ongoing game of Internet exec musical chairs, Greg Coleman (pictured here), who has been a top exec at both Yahoo and AOL, is poised to become president of the Huffington Post, as well as chief revenue officer, several sources said.</p>
<p>The deal for Coleman to come on board at the privately held online news site&#8211;which has grown significantly over the last year and just added well-known online media exec Eric Hippeau as CEO&#8211;came together only recently.</p>
<p>And it is not clear what the role of current Huffington Post Chief Revenue Officer James Smith will be going forward.</p>
<p>The Coleman hiring is most likely the work of Hippeau, who has known him from Coleman&#8217;s days as head of ad sales at Yahoo (YHOO). Hippeau has been on the board of the Internet giant for many years.</p>
<p>Hippeau was also a key player in the $5 million investment in the Huffington Post by SoftBank Capital in 2006.</p>
<p>He has also been a director on its small board, which also includes co-founders Arianna Huffington and Kenny Lerer, as well as Oak Investment Partners&#8217; Fred Harman.</p>
<p>Oak recently added <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081201/huffington-post-nabs-25-million-in-funding-heres-an-exclusive-boomtown-interview-with-oak-investments-fred-harman">$25 million to the funding kitty at the Huffington Post</a>, which is headquartered in New York.</p>
<p>The money will be used to expand the site into the local arena, investigative news, and verticals such as tech, a section set to debut Sept. 21.</p>
<p>It is all being done to build on what has been a strong traffic year for the Huffington Post, which claims it has over 21 million unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Nielsen Online has pegged that at the lower figure of 8.9 million, but reported that the Huffington Post was one of the fastest-growing, year-over-year news sites.</p>
<p>Despite that, the site still has not been regularly profitable, despite doubling annual revenue&#8211;mostly in advertising&#8211;to what some estimate to be about $8 million in 2009. </p>
<p>Presumably, goosing that revenue is what Coleman is being pegged to help do&#8211;and he certainly has a lot of online advertising experience, having made stops at a lot of Internet companies in the past few years.</p>
<p>He was head of advertising sales at Yahoo for seven years, after another long stint at Reader&#8217;s Digest. Yahoo&#8217;s ad business grew strongly under him.</p>
<p>But Coleman ran into Yahoo&#8217;s management buzzsaw after trouble hit the company in 2007. He was one of the first in a long line of execs to leave the troubled company, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070829/hey-kids-lets-put-on-a-yahoo-reorg/">departing in one of its many controversial reorganizations</a>.</p>
<p>He was soon running a Los Angeles-based start-up called <a href="http://www.netseer.com">NetSeer</a>, which focuses on ad targeting. </p>
<p>He then <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/aol-ad-head-clarizio-out-being-replaced-by-former-yahoo-sales-head-coleman/">headed to AOL in February</a> to run its Platform-A division.</p>
<p>But when new management was suddenly put in place by Time Warner (TWX) in the spring, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come">Coleman left after only a few months</a> on the job.</p>
<p>After taking the summer off, several sources said, he has recently been looking at a variety of jobs.</p>
<p>That included MySpace, where former Yahoo colleague Wenda Harris Millard&#8211;now with Media Link&#8211;was <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo">hired recently as an outside consultant</a> to help the News Corp. (NWS) social networking site rejigger its ad business.</p>
<p>The Huffington Post spokesman declined to comment when BoomTown inquired about Coleman&#8217;s hiring.</p>

<p>Which is precisely what <strong>All Things Digital</strong> had written in a previous post: That Media Link <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">was the hired gun on a strategic basis</a>, with Millard as the point person on fixing the ad sales structure, strategy and more at MySpace.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo/">In an internal memo today</a>, MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta said the same: &#8220;As part of this process on an interim basis the firm will help manage our day-to-day sales organization under the leadership of Wenda Harris Millard.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, the New York and Los Angeles media consultancy definitely wanted to make clear, both internally and externally, that their hiring had nothing to do with the departure today of MySpace Sales and Marketing President Jeff Berman.</p>
<p>And, indeed, according to both Media Link founder and Chairman Michael Kassan, whom I also spoke with today, Media Link had been talking to MySpace&#8211;including Berman, who decided to finally leave only today&#8211;since January.</p>
<p><em>Got it!</em> Media Link also did not hip-check Berman to the curb!</p>
<p>Still, it is a huge and deeply involved job for Media Link, and especially Millard, who will be working with ad sales until a replacement is found for Berman, and then after.</p>
<p>Millard stressed that her new role does not mean spending all her time cussing out ad sales folks who did not make their numbers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Media Link will be working on big-picture strategy related to ad sales, product development and structure,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But, of course, I will be very involved and this is a huge assignment.&#8221;</p>
<p>She certainly has the experience to take on the ad troubles of MySpace.</p>
<p>Millard&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed">was the top ad exec at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) in its glory days and who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">recently left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO)&#8211;has been a longtime online exec, working at Ziff Davis Media and DoubleClick in the very early days of the Web. She was also chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau last year until this past April.</p>

<p>But she also noted that she did not want people to be confused, pointing out that many others at Media Link will also be working on the fix-MySpace assignment too, even as she will also be tending to Media Link&#8217;s stable of clients. </p>
<p>&#8220;This is an engagement to help its management drive forward a lot of initiatives,&#8221; said Millard. &#8220;It is the management of MySpace who are the ones in charge.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a point that Media Link&#8217;s Kassan also made in a conversation I had with him today. </p>
<p>&#8220;I am very excited, since it is an important strategic assignment and part of the promise of Wenda&#8217;s unique set of skills,&#8221; he said, acknowledging that this was an unusually large job, very complex and unique for Media Link. &#8220;That said, this kind of work is our sweet spot.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: <em>In an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-welcomes-medialink-and-wenda-millard-the-complete-internal-memo/">internal memo</a>, MySpace is now telling employees that current ad sales head Jeff Berman is leaving the company.</em></p>
<p>In a move that will surely have Madison Avenue talking, well-known online advertising sales executive Wenda Harris Millard (pictured here)&#8211;who is now president of New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy Media Link&#8211;is poised to take over all advertising sales at MySpace, sources said.</p>
<p>But, in an unusual twist, she will remain in her job at <a href="http://medialinkllc.com/index.html">Media Link</a>, which has also been hired by MySpace to advise on restructuring the social networking company&#8217;s salesforce.</p>
<p>Sources said the arrangement is expected to be announced sometime today.</p>
<p>While details are still being hashed out, Millard&#8211;who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070625/wenda-was-robbed">was the top ad exec at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) in its glory days and who <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">recently left her job as co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia</a> (MSO)&#8211;will apparently report to MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta directly.</p>
<p>In turn, all regional advertising vice presidents at MySpace will report to her. Millard is likely to work out of New York, where she lives and where the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace also has offices.</p>

<p>This is a big coup for Media Link, which was founded by Michael Kassan, given that it will essentially be running a major part of the business of MySpace as MySpace seeks to reinvigorate itself, spur innovation and reset its product strategy.</p>
<p>Media Link <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">hired Millard in April</a>, which turned out to be a good move as she appeared to be the obvious draw for MySpace, as well as News Corp. (NWS) execs.</p>
<p>She is well known to them, as well as to many in both the Internet and advertising industries. Millard has been a longtime online exec, working at Ziff Davis Media and DoubleClick in the very early days of the Web. She was also chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau last year until this past April.</p>
<p>MySpace also reportedly talked to several big online advertising sales execs like Millard about the job, according to several sources outside the company.</p>

<p>This development now leaves the fate of President of Sales and Marketing Jeff Berman (pictured here) unclear.</p>
<p>But several sources told me Berman&#8211;whom I wrote earlier this summer was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090617/myspace-after-the-layoffs-heres-whats-what-and-whats-next/">&#8220;rumored to be on the bubble,&#8221;</a> but remaining for the time being&#8211;has been actively looking for a new job in the past few weeks and even told at least one person he spoke to that he was going to be &#8220;gone from MySpace by Labor Day.&#8221;</p>
<p>Probably sooner, now that MySpace is about to hire Millard and her firm to take over a big part of his job.</p>
<p>Yesterday, MySpace made another splashy move by buying the social music site, iLike, the first acquisition by its new exec team, as part of a move to push the &#8220;socialization of content.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a statement in the press release about the iLike acquisition, Van Natta might be seen as tipping his hand a little bit: &#8220;We are deeply committed to bringing world class talent into all areas of the company&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seasoned and experienced management was a point he also emphasized in a conference call with media yesterday about the iLike deal.</p>
<p>Millard is certainly that.</p>
<p>And, in fact, there has been a clearing out of almost all of MySpace&#8217;s former top execs and replacement with new blood&#8211;such as former Apple (AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) and Facebook alum Katie Geminder as SVP of user experience and design and Mike Macadaan, who is VP of product.</p>
<p>It is a process that is doubtlessly going to continue as Millard comes in and cleans house&#8211;and it will be interesting to see just what talent comes in next.</p>

<p>One of Yahoo&#8217;s highest-ranking premium advertising sales execs&#8211;David Dickman, VP of West Coast sales&#8211;is leaving the company, people familiar with the situation said.</p>
<p>Sources said Dickman, who will leave Yahoo at the end of the month after three years at the company, is reportedly going to Time Warner (TWX) unit Warner Bros. to work in digital sales.</p>
<p>Well liked at Yahoo (YHOO), Dickman was impacted in a sales reorganization done in the spring.</p>
<p>At the time, Atlanta-based regional sales VP Mitch Spolan was named to lead Yahoo&#8217;s North American field sales, consolidating its display ad sales groups, which had previously been split between the East and West Coasts. </p>
<p>Before that, Dickman ran the Western sales and another exec the Eastern sales, serving big display advertisers. The latter exec took over agency sales, while Dickman remained running sales on the West Coast, reporting to Spolan.</p>

<p>Dickman&#8217;s departure comes after another top Yahoo display ad exec, Todd Taplin (pictured here), left last week. He was regional VP of sales in New England and Canada, responsible for big Yahoo display advertising accounts like Fidelity Investments in Boston.</p>
<p>Taplin&#8211;who was also well regarded at Yahoo&#8211;took a <a href="http://www.collective.com/prn037">job at Collective Media</a> in New York, as its new Chief Revenue Officer.</p>
<p>Flux at the Yahoo ad sales group in the U.S.&#8211;which accounts for most of the Internet giant&#8217;s revenues&#8211;will be closely watched by Wall Street right now since it is also charged with selling premium search ads for both Yahoo and Microsoft (MSFT) under the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/topics/microhoo/">recent deal they struck</a>. Yahoo is also aiming to turbocharge its premium graphical ad sales business.</p>

So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here's a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who'll be making them.]]></description>

<p><em>Now what?</em></p>
<p>The party-all-night social-networking site that has been MySpace so far got a massive morning-after shock yesterday when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090616/myspace-a-place-for-layoffs/">30 percent of its workforce&#8211;or 420 employees&#8211;was laid off</a>.</p>
<p>And today, MySpace, which is still 1,000-strong, and its leaders have to face the cold, harsh light of day in the aftermath of the restructuring and get busy quickly figuring out a way to reinvigorate a brand that has suffered after a stunning rocket of a start many years ago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially true since a report also just came out by market research outfit comScore (SCOR) showing that Facebook has surpassed MySpace in the key U.S. market as the top social-networking site.</p>
<p>So, based on many sources I have spoken to over the last week, here&#8217;s a rundown of the next steps MySpace will likely be taking and who&#8217;ll be making them.</p>
<p><strong>MORE LAYOFFS?</strong></p>
<p>“Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company,” said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">new CEO Owen Van Natta</a> in a statement about the layoffs. </p>
<p>What he did not say was that cost-cutting via layoffs is almost always the first move in a turnaround.</p>
<p>These cuts have actually been long in coming, but it&#8217;s promising that they finally happened so quickly after Van Natta&#8211;along with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">COO Michael Jones</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/myspace-musical-chairs-jason-hirschhorn-also-in-at-myspace-as-chief-product-officer/">Chief Product Officer Jason Hirschhorn</a>&#8211;were brought in by News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller to replace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe. </p>

<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/layoff.jpeg" alt="layoff" title="layoff" width="224" height="224" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-14661" /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;The layoffs were a total reset,&#8221; said one source, who noted that unless MySpace&#8217;s advertising business falls off a cliff, which it is unlikely to do in the short term, more cuts in the U.S. will not be needed for now. That might not be true internationally, where MySpace has not performed as strongly.</p>
<p>At this point, MySpace is now about the same size as chief rival Facebook&#8217;s staff, which has been growing much more quickly (you can see my <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090615/kara-tours-the-new-facebook-hq-and-gets-ripped-the-uncut-video/">video tour of its new Silicon Valley HQ here</a>).</p>
<p>Except for not making the move to new offices in Los Angeles, the Beverly Hills, Calif.-based MySpace is also not going to be closing offices elsewhere, as has been reported, most especially its San Francisco one.</p>
<p>In fact, Van Natta is traveling to visit all of them, his memo said, over the next several days.</p>
<p><strong>LEADERSHIP</strong></p>
<p>Despite the large number of layoffs and the departure of DeWolfe, most expect there to be very little change in the top ranks of MySpace leadership for the time being.</p>
<p>While Jeff Berman, MySpace&#8217;s president of sales and marketing, has been rumored to be on the bubble, multiple sources said he would be staying in his job.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll continue to be aided by Angela Courtin, SVP of marketing, who is well-regarded. </p>

<p>The same is true of the other major question mark, co-founder Tom Anderson (pictured here), who has held the president title at the company and was in charge of its products.</p>
<p>Anderson does not have a new title yet and will no longer be in a key operational role, but many sources said his historical knowledge and his tight relationship with the MySpace community make it important that he remain at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tom is clearly in touch with what has made MySpace special,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;And it is important that he remain to keep the culture alive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Also staying for now is Tom Andrus, who has been SVP of product management under Anderson and is now reporting to Hirschhorn. While initially upset by being supplanted so quickly by new execs, most sources told me that he is a solid and well-liked exec.</p>
<p>The same is said of Jason Oberfest, SVP of business development, who is also staying. So too, CTO Aber Whitcomb, whom many thought would be leaving.</p>
<p>The only major exec departure I could confirm was Fox Interactive Media CFO Ed McKenna, who was in charge of MySpace too. Sources said will be leaving the company as his function gets consolidated into higher corporate units at News Corp.</p>
<p><strong>PRODUCT REHAUL</strong></p>
<p>Lastly, most noted that MySpace cannot cut its way back to health, which is why sources said its execs are now beginning to engage in a major overhaul of the product itself.</p>
<p>While leadership had considered bringing in a separate new skunkworks-type team to do that, it has been decided that the current staff&#8211;helped by some outside consultants&#8211;will be doing a top-to-bottom redo of MySpace.</p>
<p>MySpace could use it. As you can see from the charts below from a poll that we did for the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference recently&#8211;and where Walt Mossberg and I interviewed Van Natta and Miller onstage (see the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090527/jon-miller-and-owen-van-natta/">highlights video below</a>)&#8211;it has a lot to fix, including reengaging users, improving technology and differentiating itself from Facebook.</p>
<p>And, in fact, carving itself out as a different product than Facebook is one major aim because the offerings&#8211;while both are social networks&#8211;are quite different in approach. Facebook has evolved into more of a utility, while MySpace has made better inroads as an entertainment hub.</p>

<p>Whatever changes are made, most sources note that MySpace needs to try to remain true to its original frisky and fun start-up core, while innovating a next-generation product and continuing to goose its advertising business.</p>
<p>That also includes starting up renegotiations with Google (GOOG) about its search-advertising partnership, talks that are just getting started now (more on that soon).</p>
<p>Most of all, said one person, pointing to the long and painfully public struggle at Yahoo (YHOO), leadership has to stop the focus on MySpace being broken as soon as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;MySpace needed to be shaken up, but it is still a very powerful brand and has huge traffic,&#8221; said the source. &#8220;Its management has to project a sense inside and outside that it is not only fixable, but also can lead again.&#8221;</p>
<p>As with Yahoo, Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL and many others before it, that&#8217;s no easy task for MySpace, starting today. </p>

<p>Microsoft is searching for a major executive to run its world-wide online sales, said several sources close to the situation, even as talks with Yahoo about a deal to partner in its search and display advertising businesses continue.</p>
<p>&#8220;They need to find a way to make money in display,&#8221; said one source close to the situation. &#8220;Or, I guess, find a way to not lose quite so much.&#8221;</p>
<p>The software giant has been trying to build its online business for many years now, spending a lot of money and not getting very much traction.</p>
<p>In its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/microsoft-gets-hit-by-the-econalyspe-earnings-and-revenues-slide/">recent quarterly results</a>, in fact, Microsoft&#8217;s online services got hit badly, with a 14 percent decline in revenue from a year ago to $721 million. Losses doubled to $575 million.</p>
<p>Sources said Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;which has hired headhunting firm Spencer Stuart to conduct the search&#8211;is looking for more execs to turbocharge the situation, with one criterion being that the person hired is &#8220;another ambassador to Madison Avenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last fall, it did that by hiring Time Inc. ad exec Robin Domeniconi to take over as the new VP, U.S., Microsoft Advertising.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why the new sales candidate the company is looking for might only be for someone to lead Microsoft&#8217;s international ad sales, since the exec in charge of that business left in December as part of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081215/microsoft-sales-vet-leaves-after-consolidation-post-qi-lu-hire/">a mass of changes</a> in the wake of the hiring of digital head Qi Lu.</p>
<p>Those changes included the departure of that exec, Global VP of Sales Bill Shaughnessy, as well as its top online ad sales exec, Brian McAndrews, and the rejiggering of its online sales unit.</p>
<p>In that switch, Microsoft said in a press release: &#8220;The field sales organizations in the Online Services Group will move to Microsoft&#8217;s centralized Sales, Marketing and Services Group led by chief operating officer Kevin Turner. This group, called Consumer &#038; Online, will be led by Corporate Vice President Darren Huston and will include the Global Advertising Sales and Services organization, led by vice president Bill Shaughnessy.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move to centralize, according to sources, has been controversial within the company, since it means all sales are being lumped into one megagroup. </p>
<p>That could all change dramatically again if there is any success in the talks Microsoft has been having with Yahoo (YHOO) about outsourcing its online display sales to the Internet giant. The pair have been discussing partnering over search and advertising.</p>
<p>While such a deal might not happen&#8211;Yahoo has been especially reticent to separate its search and display businesses&#8211;the two sides have been discussing several scenarios in a bid to compete with online giant Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Among the latest ideas is one in which Yahoo would take over both search and display advertising sales and Microsoft would run the tech behind the scenes. </p>
<p>Such a deal would be a major shift for both companies in their business focus and would also tether them together.</p>

<p>More musical chairs at Yahoo, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090415/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-one-yahoo-management-and-staff-set-on-shuffle-again/">BoomTown predicted recently</a>, as top execs at the company move in and out of jobs, and new ones from the outside move in.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most important change to occur is the replacement this week of SVP Scott Dietzen&#8211;who has been in charge of all communications and communities products at Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;by former Adobe Systems (ADBE) exec Bryan Lamkin, several sources said.</p>
<p>Lamkin will become SVP of Applications Products.</p>

<p>According to his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/bryan/lamkin">profile on LinkedIn</a>, Lamkin (pictured here) was most recently SVP of Creative Solutions, Adobe’s largest business unit, where the software exec &#8220;led product strategy, marketing and product development for Adobe’s flagship software applications, including Photoshop, the Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Flash and Illustrator.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lamkin, who was at Adobe for 14 years, has more recently been an executive-in-residence at two venture firms, New Enterprise Associates and Sutter Hill Ventures.</p>
<p>He will take over for Dietzen, who came to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">Yahoo in 2007 after its $350 million Zimbra open-source email acquisition</a></p>
<p>Dietzen&#8211;whom sources said is more entrepreneurial than managerial and did not want to lead such a big organization at the Internet giant&#8211;will become VP of strategy in the move. Many said they expect he will eventually leave Yahoo to try his hand at another start-up.</p>
<p>His colleague, Zimbra founder and CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj, left Yahoo earlier this year</a> to join <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090323/zimbra-founder-and-ex-yahoo-exec-dharmaraj-to-redpoint-ventures">Redpoint Ventures as a VC</a>.</p>
<p>In his job since, Dietzen has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081007/yahoos-scott-dietzen-speaks-about-its-new-online-calendar-which-is-about-a-decade-late">busy fixing Yahoo&#8217;s mail and calendar offerings</a>. (See my video interview with him below from last fall.)</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all.</p>
<p>Also afoot is a restructuring of Yahoo&#8217;s North American sales unit, with the unexpected promotion of Mitch Spolan, who was a regional sales exec and will now be in charge of all North American field sales.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-yahoo-centralizes-sales/">paidContent Web site reported the sales changes</a> first, which have been rumored around Yahoo recently.</p>
<p>Spolan jumped over two more senior execs, sources said, who run sales operations for the East and West coasts. One of those execs, Beth Lawrence, will now run Yahoo&#8217;s relations with agencies. Both report to U.S. sales SVP Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>Over the last 18 months, Yahoo has seen a bleeding of its advertising staff to a wide range of Silicon Valley Web companies, including, most recently, Yahoo’s VP of Sales Operations Dan Foehner to social-networking site Facebook.</p>
<p>Lastly, one of Yahoo&#8217;s most senior communications execs, Brad Williams, was let go as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/yahoo-first-quarter-results-are-as-meh-as-expected-will-cut-five-percent-of-staff-plus-the-full-press-release/">part of its recent round of layoffs</a>. He had been running PR&#8211;admirably and with good cheer, I might add, despite all the bad news&#8211;since its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">head, Jill Nash, departed earlier this year</a>.</p>
<p>Williams&#8217;s departure was <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124061817277555167.html">first reported by The Wall Street Journal</a> tonight. He came to Yahoo in early 2008 from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>New marketing head Elisa Steele, who was hired by CEO Carol Bartz, had recently hired a headhunting firm to find a new PR chief, sources said, and Williams was not considered as a candidate for the job. </p>
<p><em><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Yahoo confirmed my report above.</em></p>
<p> A spokesman sent me the following info about Lamkin&#8217;s appointment:</p>

<p>Well, despite the news being as bad at Microsoft as it was at Yahoo (YHOO) earlier this week, the conference call after the software giant <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/microsoft-gets-hit-by-the-econalyspe-earnings-and-revenues-slide/">released its third-quarter earnings</a> was 100 percent less naughty and 200 percent more glum.</p>
<p>In other words, while there were <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/liveblogging-the-yahoo-earnings-conference-call-it-depends-on-your-definition-of-what-wow-is">no F-bombs dropped</a>, there were lots of E-bombs&#8211;as in econalypse. </p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s earnings and revenue took a big hit in its third quarter, with profits down 32 percent from a year ago on a six percent sales decline.</p>
<p>It was the company&#8217;s first-ever year-over-year quarterly sales drop.</p>
<p>There were also more than $700 million in charges from layoffs and investment declines, both a result of the weak economy. The culprit for most of the bad news was the decline in consumer and business spending on computers.</p>
<p>And Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell did not even bother to act as if there was any hope, painting a semi-apocalyptic picture of the business landscape that he predicted was not going to get better anytime soon.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s BoomTown&#8217;s liveblogging of the call:</p>
<p><strong>2:34 p.m. PDT:</strong> The call starts after some very stern marshal music was played. This turns out to be the perfect mood-setter.</p>
<p>First up, the investor relations guy who talks about all the rules, like those folks who come on after, say, a Viagra commercial and quickly list the scary side effects.</p>
<p>But scary was what Liddell was serving up from the get-go, as he pretty much spent the entire conference call talking about just how bad the economy has been, is and will be.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/getimageaspxgif.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/getimageaspxgif.jpeg" alt="getimageaspxgif" title="getimageaspxgif" width="225" height="300" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12796" /></a></p>
<p>What&#8217;s most disconcerting perhaps is the fact that he was delivering the bad news in a cute-as-a-kiwi New Zealand accent. </p>
<p>Nonetheless, Liddell said the company had had to &#8220;adapt to a new reality&#8221; and that Microsoft was &#8220;more cautious than most about the state of the world economy&#8221; and&#8211;let&#8217;s not forget&#8211;the &#8220;economic pressures are both broad and deep.&#8221;</p>
<p>Liddell also noted that the recovery will not happen quickly, but be &#8220;slow and gradual.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps this is not the right time to mention that both <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090416/googles-revenue-slumps-but-cost-cutting-pays-off">Google</a> (GOOG) and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/apple-beats-the-street-guidance-a-bit-light/">Apple</a> (AAPL) essentially <em>killed</em> in their recent earnings reports.</p>
<p><strong>2:38 p.m.:</strong> Microsoft&#8217;s investor relations head Bill Koefoed&#8211;without any jaunty inflection whatsoever&#8211;delivered the numbers in that droning way that all financial types who deliver numbers on calls like this do.</p>
<p>My assistant, Ed, actually fell into a temporary coma from across the room.</p>
<p>Basic message of numbers: Bad.</p>
<p><strong>2:54 p.m.:</strong> Back to Liddell for some forward-looking stuff.</p>
<p>Also not good, with consumer sentiment and spending weak, he said, there would be &#8220;significant pressure until market conditions improve.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;In summary, it was a tough quarter,&#8221; reiterated Liddell, restating what he already stated and stated again. And then restated.</p>
<p><strong>2:59 p.m.:</strong> Now to questions! Maybe things will look up here.</p>

<p>But&#8230;<em>nope!</em> </p>
<p>Thus, more worries about Microsoft&#8217;s growth, a weakness in sales and even some clucking over renewal rates of its operating system software licenses.</p>
<p>Then someone noted that it seemed as if Microsoft at least had its &#8220;arms around&#8221; the problems.</p>
<p>Would Liddell show any glimmer of hope?</p>
<p>&#8220;I guess we are all learning&#8230; how do I feel about the shape of the quarter [to come]?&#8221; he pondered.</p>
<p>Wait for it, wait for it, <em>wait for it</em>. Said Liddell, the sad-sack CFO: &#8220;I do not see anything that gives me any encouragement.&#8221;</p>
<p>Big, big sigh.</p>
<p><strong>3:16 p.m.:</strong> Someone asked about one remark Liddell made about some &#8220;countercyclical&#8221; products, which might be bright spots in the Microsoft empire.</p>
<p>Indeed, new versions of the Windows operating system, Office, Exchange and its search offering are all set to come out in the next year.</p>

<p>Will they be gamechangers? Liddell was not saying, of course.</p>
<p>Finally, at the end, after a question about stock repurchases, there was some light at the end of the tunnel.</p>
<p>No matter what, Microsoft is still a cash-spewing engine.</p>
<p>&#8220;One of the great positives,&#8221; said Liddell was the company&#8217;s free cash flow of $20 billion, at an annual rate.</p>
<p>In other words, there is nothing like money stuffed under the mattress in times like these.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s earnings and revenue took a hit in its third quarter, as expected, with profits down 32 percent from a year ago on a six percent sales decline.</p>
<p>Before one-time charges, the software giant earned $2.98 billion, or 33 cents a share after one-time charges, on revenues of $13.65 billion.</p>
<p>The weak results were relatively in line with analysts&#8217; estimates of 39 cents a share on $14.1 billion in revenue.</p>
<p>It was the company&#8217;s first-ever year-over-year quarterly sales drop.</p>
<p>But Microsoft stock was up in after-hours trading, after also rising today before the market close by 14 cents, up .75 percent, to $18.92.</p>
<p>Costs from layoffs of $290 million and a $420 million impairment charge on investments also hit the bottom line at Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>The company announced those first-time mass layoffs in the previous quarter. No further layoffs were announced today, despite rumors that they might be.</p>
<p>The culprit for most of the bad news was the decline in consumer and business spending on computers, since half of Microsoft&#8217;s operating income comes from sales of its Windows operating system.</p>
<p>But its online services also got hit badly, with a 14 percent decline in revenue from a year ago to $721 million. Losses doubled to $575 million. <em>Oof!</em></p>
<p>Thus, Microsoft execs better hightail it down to Yahoo (YHOO) some more to strike that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090420/update-on-yahoo-microsoft-talks-hot-and-heavy">long-simmering search and advertising partnership deal</a>.</p>
<p>BoomTown will be liveblogging the earnings conference call soon, but until then, here is the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/FY09/earn_rel_q3_09.mspx">Microsoft press release</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>REDMOND, Wash.&#8211;Apr. 23, 2009&#8211;Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $13.65 billion for the third quarter ended March 31, 2009, a 6% decline from the same period of the prior year. Operating income, net income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $4.44 billion, $2.98 billion and $0.33 per share, which represented an increase of 3% and declines of 32% and 30%, respectively, when compared with the prior year period.</p>
<p>The financial results for the third quarter ended March 31, 2009, included $290 million of severance charges related to the previously announced plan to reduce up to 5,000 positions and $420 million of impairments to investments. Combined, these two charges reduced earnings per share by $0.06.</p>
<p>Revenue in Client, Microsoft Business Division, and Server &#038; Tools was negatively impacted by weakness in the global PC and Server markets. Revenue from enterprise customers remained stable during the quarter.</p>
<p>“With our continued R&#038;D investment and our broad suite of products and services, we remain in a great position to compete and gain share in the marketplace,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. During the quarter, Microsoft released the beta version of the Windows 7 operating system, which remains on track for a fiscal year 2010 launch. Development milestones were achieved on other products including Microsoft Office 2010, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Mobile.</p>
<p>“While market conditions remained weak during the quarter, I was pleased with the organization’s ability to offset revenue pressures with the swift implementation of cost-savings initiatives,” said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “We expect the weakness to continue through at least the next quarter.”<br />
Business Outlook</p>
<p>Microsoft offers updated operating expense guidance of $26.7 billion to $26.9 billion, including severance charges, for the full year ending June 30, 2009.</p>
<p>Management will discuss third quarter results and the company’s business outlook on a conference call and webcast at 2:30 p.m. PDT (5:30 p.m. EDT) today.</p></blockquote>

<p>The Time Warner (TWX) online unit will announce today that Mark Ellis has been promoted to EVP of sales at the advertising division.</p>
<p>He will lead Platform-A’s digital ad sales, sources said, including premium efforts at AOL’s MediaGlow content unit and for its third-party ad network. </p>
<p>It is all part of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090326/more-reorging-for-aols-ad-unit-platform-a-the-lastest-memo">extensive management reorganization</a> being done by Platform-A President Greg Coleman, former sales head at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>New CEO and Chairman Tim Armstrong started yesterday and told staff in a memo that even more change was coming, as part of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090407/tim-armstrong-starts-at-aol-his-entire-100-day-countdown-to-magic-memo/">100-day effort to evaluate how to revive the online company</a>.</p>
<p>Ellis has been at AOL for a while, most recently as SVP of vertical and product sales. Previously, he worked at sports marketing company IMG, at Quokka Sports, a sports Web site and at Time Inc. as publisher of Time Inc. New Media.</p>

<p>He has most recently been an executive-in-residence at Redpoint Ventures, an investor in Efficient Frontier.</p>

<p>Karnstedt’s experience includes several industry firsts.  Prior to Yahoo!, David led the Direct Sales team at Overture Services, the company that pioneered the paid search industry and was acquired by Yahoo! in 2003. He also served as Vice President and General Manager of Alta Vista, where he was responsible for the consumer business and helped shape product development and marketing strategies that leveraged the auctions-based search approach.  Prior to Alta Vista, David served as Western Advertising Director at Wired Digital where he helped to develop some of the first advertising models on the Web. He is also active in the industry, having served on both the Advertising Council and Interactive Advertising Association’s Boards of Directors.</p>

<p>Karnstedt is replacing James Beriker, who held executive positions at the company since April 2007 and was its President, CEO and a member of the Board of Directors from February 2008 until March 2009.  The company’s business expanded significantly while James was CEO.  We are appreciative of his efforts and contributions.</p></blockquote>
