<p>The new MSN homepage debuts tonight and you would be completely correct in thinking the recipe Microsoft (MSFT) has cooked up to inform its design ethos&#8211;white, clean and hiply modern&#8211;has definite echoes of a certain longtime tech rival.</p>
<p>That would be Apple (AAPL), of course, with a big dollop of Twitter and Facebook tossed in, and finished off with a generous sprinkling of Microsoft&#8217;s new Bing search service.</p>
<p>For those who care: The MSN butterfly logo remains, although it appears to have lost a lot of weight too.</p>

<p>The launch is the first major upgrade of the MSN main page in&#8211;if you can believe it&#8211;a decade, part of an overhaul that the software giant has been doing throughout its money-losing online services division.</p>
<p>That has included the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-steve-ballmer/">launch of Bing in May</a>, which has been a success for Microsoft, adding a small amount of search market share and, more importantly, some much needed respect to its long-beleaguered consumer Web efforts.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s online execs are trying to keep up the innovation momentum with the new MSN redesign and&#8211;as you can see below from the various screenshots&#8211;it is a major shift for the portal site.</p>
<p>Together, MSN and Windows Live have about 100 million unique monthly visitors, putting Microsoft typically third behind Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The company hopes to do better with a fresher MSN, which is clearly aimed, first and foremost, at clearing up the clutter and link-heavy old MSN homepage.</p>
<p>MSN execs said the new main page has about half the &#8220;blue&#8221; links.</p>

<p>The top of the new page features a big image module, with inline video and drastically reduced topic areas&#8211;as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better">BoomTown has previously reported</a>&#8211;limited to news, sports, entertainment, money and lifestyle.</p>

<p>Under that is a more customizable news module, to which feature tabs can also be added, such as for the World Series or&#8211;<em>prolonged sigh</em>&#8211;Balloon Boy coverage.</p>
<p>On the bottom left is a much-goosed local module that resolves to beefed-up local sites, which is right next another section featuring Bing top searches.</p>
<p>Bing is present in every part of the site now, with Microsoft stressing it and using its structured data to improve the consumer experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important for Bing search too, since MSN provides 45 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Communications modules are to the right, midpage and on the bottom. </p>
<p>Unlike AOL and Yahoo, which have added the ability to put third-party email on their homepages, only Hotmail is now available on the new MSN, although this is likely to change soon.</p>
<p>But perhaps the design element that will garner the most attention is the prominent placement of both Twitter and Facebook tabs in the bottom communications module, right next to one for Windows Live.</p>
<p>This allows users to update their status and get instant access to the status of friends and followers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to cut the clutter, while also giving users one convenient place to find what they need quickly,&#8221; said Scott Moore, executive producer of MSN in the U.S., its most important market, in an interview earlier today with me.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are overloaded with information and they wanted us to fix that, even if the service is not ours.&#8221;</p>
<p>The focus on Facebook and Twitter was simply due to intense user interest in the popular social networking sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has popped and Twitter was really growing,&#8221; said Moore, who noted that there was the possibility of adding other third-party apps in the future.</p>
<p>A heavy emphasis on apps was a key <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">strategy of Yahoo&#8217;s homepage redesign</a>, officially launched in late July, which SVP Tapan Bhat touted at an meeting with analysts last week as having increased page views and engagement.</p>
<p>Advertising on the page is perhaps the most conservative part, with units that remain largely as before.</p>
<p>The new MSN homepage will begin rolling out now, eventually reaching about 10 percent of users by early next year. After that, it is expected to become widely available to U.S. customers and then go worldwide.</p>

<p>Is it just me or is it completely ironic that a pair of European entrepreneurs kept out of the United States due to tantrum lawsuits from the music industry are stamping their own legal feet like two ill-tempered toddlers of late?</p>
<p>That would be Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, who today filed yet another lawsuit in their seemingly never-ending quest to win in court what they couldn&#8217;t in business dealmaking. </p>
<p>Today, via a new lawsuit, they are following through on their recent attempt to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090914/joost-a-little-misunderstanding-between-friends-not-really-but-please-enjoy-the-video-from-better-days">smear former Joost CEO Michelangelo Volpi</a>.</p>
<p>Zennström and Friis co-founded Joost, you see, and last week were part of dumping him as a director and as its chairman, a job Volpi had retained when he left his top job at Joost to join Index Ventures in July.</p>
<p>Not satisfied with that, Joost also said then in an astonishing statement: &#8220;The company and its board of directors is conducting an investigation into Mr. Volpi’s actions during his tenure as CEO and as chairman.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, it is all part of the pair being on the very-sore-losing side of the $2 billion deal to buy Skype from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>Zennström and Friis got very rich selling the Internet telephony service to eBay in 2005.</p>
<p>This year, they turned around and tried to buy it back, hooking up with a group of private-equity investors.</p>
<p>Both Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) also considered bids, and dropped out for various reasons.</p>
<p>And so did Volpi, in one of his first deals at Index&#8211;and the London-based venture firm was one of the smaller players on the winning side of the deal to buy Skype, putting up $75 million.</p>
<p>To complicate things further, Zennström and Friis also own a company called Joltid, which has licensed key technology for Skype to eBay.</p>
<p>Joltid and eBay have already been fighting in a British court over that agreement, bickering back and forth about whether eBay violated the terms of that deal or not.</p>
<p>Earlier this week, via Joltid, Zennström and Friis also filed suit again against Skype and its owner, eBay, for copyright violations in the U.S.</p>
<p>For good measure, they also added the winning buyout group, including Silver Lake Partners, Index, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.</p>
<p>Did I forget to mention that lawsuit-happy Zennström and Friis also sued the investment banker who represented them in the original Skype sale?</p>
<p>So, it comes as no shock that both Joltid and Joost&#8211;aka Zennström and Friis&#8211;announced yesterday that they are suing Volpi personally, as well as Index again.</p>
<p>They allege tech skullduggery on Volpi&#8217;s part, in which he used confidential information he learned at Joost to thwart Joltid.</p>
<p>Evidence and proof&#8211;on first blush&#8211;seem to have little to do with this and ire at losing a deal and trying to gain leverage for a settlement seem to be the true game.</p>
<p>And what their next legal move might be is anybody&#8217;s guess.</p>
<p>But you get the idea here, don&#8217;t you? </p>

<p>BoomTown just got the following email from Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of 23andMe, the personal genetics start-up, about the departure of her co-founder, Linda Avey (pictured here). She will be starting a foundation related to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.</p>
<p>The pair founded the high-profile company&#8211;whose Series A investors include Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki&#8217;s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin&#8211;in 2006.</p>
<p>It has collected almost $23 million in funding.</p>
<p>Avey noted in an email to staff, which is posted in its entirety below: &#8220;I also recognize that the company has reached a critical point in its growth where new leadership can take it to the successful heights we all think it can achieve.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wojcicki&#8217;s email reads, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I wanted to let you know that Linda Avey will be leaving 23andMe to focus her energy on transforming Alzheimer&#8217;s research and treatment, leveraging the 23andMe platform. Linda and I have talked about doing research in Alzheimer&#8217;s since the inception of the company. Linda, whose father-in-law recently died from the disorder, will be leveraging 23andMe’s platform as she works to revolutionize the research, treatments and prevention for Alzheimer’s.</p>
<p>Linda will be greatly missed by me and my colleagues but we’re glad she will continue to be in a related field, and we are committed to continuing the work that she and I started three years ago.</p></blockquote>

<p>I&#8217;ve decided that I&#8217;d like to focus my efforts on an area that is personally significant and will continue to have a huge impact on our healthcare system&#8211;Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.  Effective today, I&#8217;m leaving 23andMe and have begun making plans for the creation of a foundation dedicated to the study of this disorder.  The foundation will leverage the research platform we&#8217;ve built at 23andMe&#8211;the goal is to drive the formation of the world&#8217;s largest community of individuals with a family history of Alzheimer&#8217;s, empower them with their genetic information and track their brain health using state-of-the-art tools.  We&#8217;ve always planned to include Alzheimer&#8217;s in our 23andWe research mission&#8230;I&#8217;m just approaching it from a new angle.</p>
<p>Some of you might be aware that my father-in-law suffered from Alzheimer&#8217;s and passed away last year. The ApoE4 association is barely understood but gives us a great starting point.</p>

Ms. Avey&#8217;s foundation will leverage the 23andMe research platform to search for causes and treatments for the disease, which afflicts more than 5.2 million people in the United States.</p>
<p>Ms. Avey and Anne Wojcicki founded 23andMe together in 2006. The company provides personalized genetic information through DNA analysis and allows individuals to interact with their private information through a variety of web-based tools.</p>

<p>In a risky but interesting move that has some at the company nervous and others excited, Yahoo is in the process of moving key development responsibility for its juggernaut Yahoo News unit to Taiwan.</p>
<p>Under the new system, product management, engineering and user interface design for the powerful Yahoo (YHOO) property will become the responsibility of staffers there.</p>
<p>Editorial employees for Yahoo News&#8211;which is the No. 1 news site on the Web with 48.4 unique monthly visitors, according to comScore data (SCOR)&#8211;will remain in the U.S., largely located at its Santa Monica, Calif., office.</p>
<p>Sources had alerted BoomTown to the change at Yahoo&#8217;s flagship content offering this week and many I spoke to about it were deeply worried about further separating key functions in the creation of Yahoo News. </p>
<p>&#8220;We are losing more and more of our ability to make quick changes and react to new technologies, which has worked pretty well so far, since we are #1,&#8221; said one staffer. &#8220;First, we all worked together across a room, then hundreds of miles away and now it is thousands.&#8221;</p>
<p>Previously, as was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">first reported here in February</a>, the distributed and regional method of developing content was shifted to a central global product development organization, with product management, engineering and UI design centered at Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ under CTO Ari Balogh.</p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing the product development of a Yahoo media offering drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth across the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from the programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>In addition, they argue, it makes Yahoo media offerings, which have been largely successful, less unique and more dull.</p>
<p>Well, tough tomatoes, because Yahoo confirmed the transition to me when I inquired about it. It was announced internally several weeks ago. </p>
<p>In an interview I did yesterday afternoon with Jeff Kinder, SVP of media products and solutions, who is spearheading the change, he said it was key that Yahoo News streamline how it makes its products in order to be more innovative and responsive on a global basis.</p>
<p>Before the shift to a global system, he pointed out that Yahoo had 26 different news products worldwide, using nine content management systems.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is part of building a global media platform,&#8221; said Kinder, who leads development of Yahoo&#8217;s anchor media properties, as well as its listings and regional products around the world.</p>
<p>Kinder said the staff in Taiwan was selected to take on Yahoo News because it had been creating top-level news products and was passionate about the arena.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, similar functions for other major Yahoo content categories&#8211;Sports, Finance and Entertainment&#8211;will remain in the United States.</p>
<p>In addition, he noted, with employees in Taiwan taking over these functions at Yahoo News, it would &#8220;free up some of the talent&#8221; in Silicon Valley to work on other critical content projects.</p>
<p>Kinder dismissed worries about any logjams in the ability of U.S.-based Yahoo News staffers to make changes to offerings, either for consumers or advertising partners, noting there were weekly calls between the teams and plenty of ways to communicate online.</p>
<p>But those worried about the change said the reason for the move was more to cut costs in the content arena, which&#8211;like many parts of Yahoo&#8211;has undergone layoffs and expense reductions. </p>
<p>Countered Kinder: &#8220;We are all driving to the same goal&#8230;.This is not about cost savings, but about accelerating change and leveraging a global team.&#8221;</p>

<p>That&#8217;s due to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090217/facebooks-mark-zuckerberg-cries-uncle-on-tos-snafu-the-entire-backtracking-memo/">controversy Facebook has been embroiled in this week about changes</a> it recently made to its Terms of Service that gave the company unusually sweeping rights over customers’ content and privacy.</p>
<p>While Zuckerberg had said in <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=54434097130">his first post about the issue</a> that Facebook was not in the content-stealing business, the strong language in the ToS sent the usual suspects into a major meltdown over the possibility that the young geek had gone into full-scale evil mogul mode.</p>
<p><em>As if!</em></p>
<p>In fact, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090216/you-have-zero-privacy-anyway-get-over-it-that-goes-double-on-social-networks/">Zuckerberg has been ensconced in his Silicon Valley lair</a> for years now, counting down until he knows precisely everything about everyone&#8217;s drunken college days!</p>
<p>Until D-Day then, here is my translation of his latest backtracking post:</p>

<p>More to the point, I would just like to assure you that we have taken our lawyers&#8211;who idiotically rewrote our ToS to give us ownership rights to the Bible, &#8220;American Idol&#8221; and everything Bill O&#8217;Reilly utters&#8211;and sent them over to our friends at MySpace, because their owner, News Corp. (NWS), already owns two of those three [and also this site!].</p>
<p><strong>What the Wizard wrote:</strong> <em>Many of us at Facebook spent most of today discussing how best to move forward. One approach would have been to quickly amend the new terms with new language to clarify our positions further. Another approach was simply to revert to our old terms while we begin working on our next version. As we thought through this, we reached out to respected organizations to get their input.</em></p>

<p>Yahoo will begin testing out versions of its new main homepage to a minuscule number of users starting tomorrow, employing a design that more significantly allows users to customize the starting page in a way that essentially amounts to a kind of My Yahoo-<em>lite</em> for everyone.</p>
<p>The redesign is a huge and complex endeavor. According to comScore&#8217;s July stats, Yahoo (YHOO) has about 82 million daily U.S. visitors to its homepages.</p>
<p>Most of those visitors use the Yahoo main homepage, which is fully programmed by the company. </p>
<p>Making such a shift will also be a big perceptual deal for Yahoo, which needs to prove it has remained current and open, especially compared to faster-growing rivals like Facebook.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been trying to reinvigorate itself of late, after a disastrous takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT) and a weakening of its business and its stock price.</p>
<p>Because of all this, the Yahoo brand has also doubtlessly been tarnished.</p>
<p>Thus, making a success of its new design is critical, and Yahoo&#8217;s CEO Jerry Yang has been touting the idea that Yahoo must be the &#8220;starting point&#8221; to the Web for users.</p>
<p>To respond to users who want to access information and services more quickly, the new streamlined homepage will be much shorter, be made up of more &#8220;snippets&#8221; and have links to outside email providers (initially, Google and AOL).</p>
<p>Most importantly, the new homepage will prominently feature a left-hand vertical bar, which has applications from both Yahoo properties and third-party services like eBay.</p>
<p>These apps can be added and subtracted easily. Eventually, there will be thousands of apps, from Yahoo and, after vetting, from outside developers.</p>

<p>The changes will initially impact less than one percent of worldwide users in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and India. But they will be rolled out to a wider and wider circle over the next six months.</p>

<p>&#8220;People want broadcast and narrowcast at the same time,&#8221; said Tapan Bhat (pictured here), Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of Front Doors, Communities and Network Services, in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;They want choices, but they also don&#8217;t want to do the work involved [in programming their own homepage].&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, Yahoo apparently is going to give users both in its first major redesign since 2006, which it has been working on for two years.</p>
<p>The major components of the page will still remain close to the old one, but jazzed up and shifted around.</p>
<p>For example. the apps will be moved into the position where Yahoo services links used to be, and vice versa.</p>
<p>As before, there will be a main information module at the center of the homepage, &#8220;pulse&#8221; and news area on the bottom-right and -left, and search and navigation at the very top.</p>
<p>Bhat said the changes were made after a lot of research of user behavior and also after paying attention to key trends such as the widgetization of applications and the trend toward openness.</p>
<p>The new look is not aimed at the hardcore user, who might want to endlessly tweak the Yahoo homepage, although those options will remain for those who prefer them.</p>
<p>But, Bhat said, more people wanted quick access to things like email without having to launch apps. Instead, users will be able to see it all on the main page.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not a dashboard approach of My Yahoo or iGoogle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People are time-starved &#8230; so it is important to the user to get to their relevant daily information as quickly as possible without having to click around.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bhat said the rollout tomorrow will not be final and that Yahoo will keep making changes, depending on reaction.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want 300 million people opposed to change,&#8221; said Bhat, <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2008/09/17/testing-testing-a-new-yahoo-com/">who wrote a blog post on the changes here</a>. &#8220;So, we are going to be listening hard.&#8221;</p>
